Serendipity Episode 23 Recap
> Serendipity Recap
Jian Mingshu, Yin Shujun, and the Princess of Wen’an County organized an outing and invited Lu Chang and Song Qingzhao to join, but Prince Rui was nowhere to be seen. Jian Mingshu’s family was about to move into a new residence, the Top Scholar’s Mansion granted by the emperor. Yin Shujun concealed her disappointment. Normally substituting tea for wine, she unusually drank alcohol today, feeling quietly melancholic—Prince Rui clearly wasn’t coming.
Song Qingzhao suggested going to the training grounds, which Jian Mingshu was very interested in. The Princess of Wen’an County stopped Lu Chang so the two of them could have fun together. Yin Shujun, using fatigue as an excuse, didn’t go. After the others left, she drank alone in silence. The Princess of Wen’an County told Lu Chang that Yin Shujun wanted to matchmake the two of them.
Lu Chang admitted that he hadn’t moved on from the past, but the Princess of Wen’an County wasn’t interested in marriage either. After what happened with Xie Xu, she realized that marriage isn’t the meaning of life—women’s brilliance isn’t confined to the inner quarters. As they walked, they saw Song Qingzhao teaching Jian Mingshu archery. The two looked like they were having a great time.
The Princess sighed that they made a perfect couple, while Lu Chang felt very upset inside. Lu Chang sought out Song Qingzhao for a private talk. The Princess of Wen’an County felt Lu Chang was jealous, and the air between the two men grew tense. Lu Chang asked Song Qingzhao about his feelings for Jian Mingshu.
As her older brother, he would respect her choices, but if she ever got hurt by him, he would make sure Song Qingzhao regretted it. Yin Shujun wanted to take a walk alone, but accidentally twisted her ankle. Not long after, she heard Prince Rui looking for her with his attendants. Seeing him, she was filled with joy, and Prince Rui expressed concern for her injury. Yin Shujun tried to matchmake the Princess of Wen’an County and Lu Chang.
Jian Mingshu also thought it was a good idea, but Lu Chang lost his temper and told her not to meddle in his affairs. This made Jian Mingshu think that Lu Chang was deeply in love with Su Tangli. Yin Shujun proactively spoke with Prince Rui. Lately, he had been avoiding her. If he wanted a separation, he should just say so. But Prince Rui said he had never considered divorce.
He knew Yin Shujun was cautious about love, so he wasn’t in a rush. Yin Shujun was secretly delighted and pretended to faint onto his shoulder. Prince Rui carried her back to the residence. Aunt Zeng, Lu Chang, and Jian Mingshu moved into the Top Scholar’s Mansion. Minister Lu came to offer congratulations, but both Jian Mingshu and Lu Chang were distant toward him.
Minister Lu wanted to pave the way for Lu Chang’s return to court and hoped he would return to his roots, but Lu Chang had no such intentions. Lu Chang officially took up a post at the Court of Judicial Review, with Ying Xun as his assistant. The first thing he did was bring up the retrial of Mr. Su’s case. Despite opposition, the emperor allowed the case to be reopened.
Song Qingzhao entered the Hanlin Academy, but lately he had only been writing and copying documents, which was not what he wanted to do. While delivering something to the Ministry of Rites, he accidentally came across the thin book of past examinees—and discovered something unexpected. Late at night, Song Qingzhao entered Lu Chang’s room to ask whether Jian Mingshu was really his sister.
She was actually the young lady of the Jian family who married into the Lu family after the exams. Lu Chang no longer concealed the truth and confessed what had happened. The Jian family case was deeply intertwined with Mr. Su’s case. Only when the real culprit was brought to justice could they tell Jian Mingshu everything. Song Qingzhao questioned Lu Chang’s feelings for Jian Mingshu—did he truly feel nothing for her as a woman?
Since he chose to be her brother, he should not cross the line! Jian Mingshu happened to be delivering food to Lu Chang and overheard Song Qingzhao’s words. Learning that she and Lu Chang weren’t really siblings struck her like lightning. She wandered the streets in a daze. She wasn’t Lu Chang’s sister, not a daughter of the Lu family—how could this be? The next morning at breakfast, Jian Mingshu arrived late.
In recent days, they had been like family, and the bond between them was beyond doubt. But who were they really? Jian Mingshu used the excuse of visiting Hualang Pavilion. Aunt Zeng and Lu Chang quickly gave her some buns and reminded her to eat no matter how busy she was. Jian Mingshu asked Song Qingzhao whether he would ever hide anything from her. Song Qingzhao was startled, worried that she already knew something.
Jian Mingshu also wanted to question Lu Chang but feared how to face him after hearing the truth. She made up her mind—she would uncover who she truly was. Su Tangli used knowledge about Prince Yu’s mother, Concubine Chen, to manipulate the situation. At his birth, auspicious omens had appeared, but he later became a symbol of misfortune. Prince Yu had never received his mother’s affection and, as a result, grew up yearning for maternal love.
