Thinking that Yuan Hao was once a prince of Da Wei, he decided to arrange men to ambush the army escorting the grain and fodder, intending to capture Yuan Hao alive.

Yuan Hao led the remaining army and grain and fodder into an abandoned ancient city. With the enemy close behind and the situation critical, they could only take shelter first. Yuan Hao sent someone to inform Yuan Ling and await rescue. General Chai, the main commander of the Liang army, also guarded outside the ancient city. Xiao Xu planned to trap Yuan Hao for a few days first.
Yuan Ling arranged for Duo Xia to lead the army in a breakout, while he and Eleventh would distract Mu Kaisha and Xiao Xu's main army. However, Duo Xia insisted on fighting alongside Yuan Ling.
