Qing Di had long realized that the person Fan Xian wanted to investigate was Li Chengze. Though he could not intervene directly, Chen Pingping and Fan Jian not only refrained from easing the conflict between the two youths, but also added fuel to the fire. Chen Pingping believed that Li Chengze had been influenced by sinister officials and that someone needed to stand up and eliminate these traitors.

He thought Fan Xian was the most suitable person to handle this matter. In a fit of anger, Qing Di stormed off, leaving Fan Jian and Chen Pingping behind. Fan Jian did not expect Li Chengqian to have his subordinates support Lai Mingcheng in court. Chen Pingping suspected that those people had been arranged by Lin Ruofu, who intentionally had Li Chengqian’s followers step forward to provoke conflict between Li Chengze and Li Chengqian. Fan Jian was greatly shocked.

Although Fan Xian had not publicly named Li Chengze as the target of his investigation, all the court officials had guessed it. Li Chengze could not swallow this humiliation and came to confront Fan Xian. He ordered Xie Bi'an to create a murder case at Baoyue House and to kill Fan Sizhe, making Fan Xian feel the pain of losing a loved one. Xie Bi'an took the order and began preparations. A torrential downpour began to fall. Yuan Meng had just left Baoyue House in the rain when three thugs stormed in and dragged Old Jin's daughter out, beating her to death at the door.

Lai Mingcheng was leading the Censorate officials in working overtime to investigate corruption when he suddenly received news that a courtesan from Baoyue House had been beaten to death in the street. The manager, Yuan Meng, had fled, leaving behind a letter stating that the actual owner of Baoyue House was Fan Sizhe. Lai Mingcheng immediately submitted a report to impeach Fan Xian and Fan Sizhe. Fan Xian rushed to Baoyue House upon hearing the news.

When he saw the tragic death of Miss Jin and read the letter left by Yuan Meng, he was filled with fury and guessed that Li Chengze was the mastermind behind it. Fan Xian ordered Deng Ziyue to pursue Yuan Meng. Prince Jing’s heir, Li Hongcheng, had a secret affair with Yuan Meng. Fearing that he would be implicated after hearing about the Baoyue House incident, he came to beg Fan Xian not to reveal their relationship.

He also swore that he would be devoted only to Fan Ruoruo. Fan Xian did not believe him at all and drove him away. When Qing Di heard about the tragic Baoyue House incident, he sought Li Chengqian’s opinion. Li Chengqian suspected that someone was framing Fan Xian. Qing Di casually mentioned that the officials who supported Lai Mingcheng in court that day were under his command.

Li Chengqian was so frightened he knelt and begged for forgiveness, claiming to have known nothing about it. Qing Di gave him a three-legged stool as a warning to be cautious in the future and told him to seek guidance from the Empress. Li Chengqian went to the Empress for help. She questioned Qing Di’s words in detail and scolded Li Chengqian for supporting Fan Xian. As the Crown Prince, he should have remained detached and uninvolved.

The Empress guessed that Lin Ruofu had ordered Li Chengqian's followers to support Lai Mingcheng in court and believed Qing Di had also realized this but simply chose not to say it outright. Since the Baoyue House murder, Fan Xian and Fan Jian used illness as an excuse to avoid court and refused to receive guests.

Lai Mingcheng suspected that they were trying to distance themselves from the crime and were deliberately avoiding people, but he could only sigh in frustration, unable to confront them directly. Li Chengze also noticed that Fan Jian and Fan Xian were feigning illness and had Xie Bi'an send a trusted imperial physician to examine them. Bored at home every day, Fan Xian made various desserts by hand.

Wang Qinian ate heartily and praised his cooking skills, while Deng Ziyue wrapped up some pastries to take home and enjoy later. Fan Xian noticed that Deng Ziyue was still suspicious and trying to confirm whether he was truly trustworthy. Fan Xian reassured him and reminded him that Chen Pingping also supported them. Still, Deng Ziyue remained cautious and tense. Imperial Physician Li arrived at the Fan residence. Fan Ruoruo rushed to inform Fan Xian.

Fan Xian was confident Fan Jian would not slip up. Seeing that the time was right, he had Deng Ziyue spread some rumors. Liu Ruyu deliberately greeted Imperial Physician Li loudly to signal Fan Jian, who quickly swallowed the poison Fan Xian had given him in advance and lay down pretending to be ill. The physician carefully examined Fan Jian and found signs of poisoning, advising Liu Ruyu to investigate the household thoroughly and find the poisoner.

He then went to examine Fan Xian, with Liu Ruyu leading the way and warning Fan Xian aloud. Fan Xian had already made thorough preparations. Pale-faced, he met Imperial Physician Li in a wheelchair and fainted from exhaustion. The physician diagnosed that Fan Xian had suffered severe internal injuries, causing a disruption in his vital energy. Fan Xian alternated between clarity and confusion, acting convincingly and successfully deceiving the physician.

The physician reported truthfully to Li Chengze about Fan Jian’s poisoning and Fan Xian’s serious injuries, but Li Chengze did not believe it. Deng Ziyue gathered many commoners to spread rumors about the affair between Baoyue House manager Yuan Meng and Li Hongcheng. The news quickly spread throughout the capital.
