As Feng Shizhen was about to board her train, Rong Jiashang rushed to stop her, pulling her aboard just as the locomotive began to move. Inside a private compartment, Rong Jiashang wasted no time in kissing her, a gesture she passionately returned. He then held up a button, revealing it was the one she had lost when saving him at the munitions warehouse. He confessed his profound feelings for her, deeply moving Feng Shizhen.

She admitted she thought their story had ended, but his persistence had brought them back together. She initially tried to dismiss his heartfelt declaration, claiming she saved him out of conscience, not love, and teased him about risking misinterpreting her intentions. However, Rong Jiashang clarified that he would be deeply unhappy and would miss her terribly if they weren't together, causing him immense pain. Feng Shizhen then sincerely thanked him for coming for her.

Upon arriving in Nanjing, they checked into a hotel. Rong Jiashang, eager to learn more about her, took Feng Shizhen to a teahouse to enjoy Pingtan while they ate. He expressed a desire to understand her preferences, such as her favorite foods, books, and hobbies, noting that he knew so little about her. To remedy this, they played a Q&A game, sharing their tastes in music and colors.

When asked about her first love, Feng Shizhen teasingly claimed to have had a romance with her English teacher during her girls' middle school days, which visibly bothered Rong Jiashang as he fell silent. Later, she confessed she was only kidding and had merely admired the teacher's talent, finding his jealous reaction amusing.

Rong Jiashang then shared stories from his youth at the military academy, describing his rebellious and proud nature, his fights with older students, and the close friends he made, calling himself the "man of the hour." He told her how glad he was to have returned to Shanghai and met her. He then recounted their first encounter at the Metropolis Club, admitting he was more nervous than she was during their dance, fearing his clumsy steps.

He revealed his deepest fear was losing her. Feng Shizhen, in turn, confessed that despite the many lies she had told, her initial attraction to him at the ballroom was genuine; she had instantly liked the elegant young man. Rong Jiashang then playfully demanded that she love only him, think only of him, consider him the most handsome man, and kiss him at least ten times a day.

As a heavy rain suddenly began, Rong Jiashang quickly took off his coat to shield Feng Shizhen, and they ran back to the hotel. Unwilling to be separated, they spent the night together. After a goodnight kiss, he insisted on collecting the remaining kisses he felt she owed him before they finally settled down for the night. The next morning, Feng Shizhen woke feeling blissful beside Rong Jiashang.

She was concerned about missing her train to Peking, worrying that her brother, Feng Shixun, would be anxious. Rong Jiashang, however, assured her he had a way to get her there on time. He inquired about his father and her family, to which she replied everything was arranged but expressed concern for Fanglin and Fanghua. She thanked him for saving Fanghua, but he lamented not being able to prevent her suffering.

Feng Shizhen reassured him it was not his fault, but the culmination of the ongoing feud between the Rong and Meng families. Rong Jiashang declared that although he might be her mistake, she was the best choice he had ever made, calling her his light that pulled him from nightmares and reminded him of his dreams. He revealed how incredibly happy she made him. A plane was ready for them, which Rong Jiashang had arranged.

Feng Shizhen was surprised and thrilled when she learned he would be piloting it, having secretly learned to fly in Chongqing for a year before returning to Shanghai. Feeling fearless with him by her side, she took her seat as he took off. As they flew above the clouds, Rong Jiashang pointed out the magnificent sea of clouds, a beautiful sight he had always wanted to share with her.

Feng Shizhen wondered if gods were watching over them, and Rong Jiashang affirmed they would surely bless them. Upon their arrival in Peking, a heavy snowfall had begun. Rong Jiashang suggested renting an apartment for Feng Shizhen, but she declined, stating she had already made arrangements with the school and needed to visit her respected teacher, Mr. Pei. Rong Jiashang asked to accompany her, but Feng Shizhen told him to wait a couple of days until she was settled.

She then proceeded to Mr. Pei's home with gifts from Shanghai. Mr. Pei and his wife warmly welcomed her, having eagerly awaited her arrival since receiving her telegram. Mr. Pei informed her that her senior colleague had resigned to get married, creating an opening for Feng Shizhen to work at the school, which she gladly accepted. Unexpectedly, Rong Jiashang appeared at Mr. Pei’s house. Feng Shizhen, feigning unfamiliarity, greeted him formally.

Mrs. Pei introduced him as her student Yang Xiucheng’s cousin, who was visiting Peking on business and had come to call on them. Mrs. Pei then turned to Feng Shizhen, urging her to consider marriage soon and find a good husband, a sentiment Rong Jiashang echoed, hinting that Feng Shizhen might already have a sweetheart. After dinner, Feng Shizhen bid farewell to Mr. Pei, and Rong Jiashang joined her as she left.

Spotting a small boy selling flowers in the snow, Rong Jiashang compassionately bought his entire bouquet, instructing him to use the extra money for new shoes, and then presented the roses to Feng Shizhen. As they walked, Rong Jiashang expressed his regret that he couldn't offer her a definite commitment yet, feeling he was too young and not strong enough to shoulder all responsibilities.

Feng Shizhen, however, assured him she didn't need any promises, as she already had what she truly desired – him. She reiterated her belief in his intelligence, integrity, and compassion, confidently stating that he would achieve great things beyond his family business. She also confessed that when she first saw him at the Metropolis Club, he was like "a ray of light illuminating the snowy mountains," and now she was bathed in that light, having no other desires.

She humorously added that if he weren't so good-looking, she might not have risked saving him from the Meng family. Rong Jiashang, teasing, wondered if her affection would wane with time, to which Feng Shizhen playfully responded that women's hearts could be unpredictable. He then lovingly declared his affection for her, and she reciprocated, affirming her love for him.

She thoughtfully remarked that since nothing in the world is constant, all they could do was live each day to the fullest and leave the rest to fate. Over the following days, Rong Jiashang and Feng Shizhen spent time exploring Peking together, their bond growing stronger. During a visit to the Forbidden City, Feng Shizhen reflected on the transient nature of empires and dynasties, likening them to ships destined to sink. Rong Jiashang countered that not all ships sink, and even if they do, people will always return to shore to build new vessels and continue their journey.
