Wengu arrived at the God of Pestilence Temple, demanding to know Duanmu Cui's whereabouts. Hong Luan, initially trying to prevent him from pursuing her, eventually revealed that Duanmu Cui had gone to Chong City. Despite Hong Luan's pleas for him not to follow, Wengu was determined and left immediately to find her. Upon reaching Chong City, Wengu was overjoyed to discover Duanmu Cui alive.

However, his happiness was short-lived as Duanmu Cui confronted him, accusing him of losing his humanity, becoming a scourge to the world, and harming the innocent. She revealed that she had remembered everything from a thousand years ago and urged him to return to Penglai to receive punishment, stating it wasn't too late.

Wengu, filled with bitterness, questioned why she chose Zhan Yan now, just as she had chosen Gu Chang before, feeling that his immense sacrifices for her had been in vain. He refused to turn back, declaring he had no other path. Seeing his unwavering delusion, Duanmu Cui decided she had no choice but to eliminate him herself. As heavenly lightning descended, Hong Luan suddenly appeared and shielded Wengu, taking the full force of the strike.

With her dying breath, Hong Luan confessed her admiration for Duanmu Cui, wishing they could have been sisters, and expressed how much she cherished their time together. She begged Duanmu Cui to forgive Wengu, asserting that all his actions, though misguided, stemmed from his deep love for her. Duanmu Cui was devastated, knowing she had always considered Hong Luan a sister.

As Hong Luan destroyed her own inner elixir and passed away, flashbacks revealed Wengu's past act of using his blood to save the then-unformed peach blossom spirit and naming her Hong Luan, solidifying Hong Luan's lifelong devotion to him. She had spent her life blooming for him, calling him her wind, and wishing to wait for him in the next life.

Meanwhile, the High Immortal of Penglai, having learned that the three heavenly thunderbolts on Duanmu Cui had automatically activated and Wengu still escaped, decided to deploy the five savage thunderbolts. Yang Jian was entrusted with this crucial mission to kill the "sinful dragon," with the fate of all three clans hanging in the balance. Back in Qifeng City, the plague worsened daily, claiming more lives.

Duanmu Cui, despite her efforts, felt a heavy burden of guilt, believing her initial leniency towards Wengu had led to the current devastation. She summoned Immortal Hua Tuo from Penglai, who explained that the disaster was caused by an "aura of death" and stressed that unless the source was completely eradicated, any medicine would only offer a temporary reprieve. Zhan Yan, witnessing Duanmu Cui's despair, comforted her, assuring her that he would face everything by her side.

Later, Duanmu Cui noticed Zhan Yan still cherished the doll she had given him. Fearing for his safety, she covertly administered a sleeping draught to him, apologizing silently as she resolved to confront Wengu alone and prevent further tragedy. Wengu, anticipating the arrival of Penglai's forces, taunted them to bring their "five savage thunderbolts." Yang Jian confronted Wengu, offering him a swift end if he surrendered.

However, Duanmu Cui arrived and intervened, declaring that she would personally handle Wengu as a matter of "cleaning her own house." Yang Jian, though hesitant, granted her half an hour, warning that if she failed, Wengu's soul would be utterly annihilated by the thunderbolts. Zhan Yan eventually awoke, realizing Duanmu Cui's absence and deducing her intention to confront Wengu alone. He immediately set out to find and assist her.

Jiang Wenqing, seeing Zhan Yan's determination, cautioned him to be extremely careful. Jiang Wenqing himself, having recovered his memories as Jiang Yi, was deeply remorseful as he observed the widespread suffering in Qifeng City. He lamented his past decision to abandon his divinity and allow Penglai to become disorganized, believing it had led to the current catastrophe. He vowed to reverse the chaos and atone for his sins, even if it meant altering the fabric of time and space.

His wife, Madam Jiang, despite her own illness, offered unwavering support, encouraging him to pursue his convictions. Entrusting the care of Qifeng City to Shangguan Ce, Jiang Wenqing departed for Chong City, determined to change everything. Duanmu Cui and Wengu clashed. Wengu questioned why he couldn't be her lover and accused her of not acknowledging his sacrifices. Duanmu Cui reminded him of their past commitment to protect humanity, condemning his present actions of harming innocents for his selfish desires.

Wengu, consumed by his obsession, declared his willingness to abandon the entire world just to possess her. He then revealed his new resolve: since compassion had failed to win her, he would resort to seizing and fighting to make her see him. Duanmu Cui, her powers not fully restored after soul reconstruction, was struggling against him. Just then, Zhan Yan arrived, fearlessly declaring his intention to live and die with Duanmu Cui, which only further enraged Wengu.

Zhan Yan passionately accused Wengu of being unworthy, reminding him of Duanmu Cui's past sacrifices—venturing into the Ninth Abyss for an antidote, blocking the God Slaying Sword, and defying Penglai—while Wengu continued his selfish destruction. Enraged, Wengu lashed out, severely injuring both Duanmu Cui and Zhan Yan. Wengu then presented Duanmu Cui with a horrific choice: the lives of the people of Qifeng City or Zhan Yan's life.

He offered her an antidote for the plague, implying that choosing it would seal Zhan Yan's fate. Despite his injuries, Zhan Yan bravely told Duanmu Cui that she never had to apologize to him, affirming his willingness to die for her and the people. With a heavy heart, Duanmu Cui chose the lives of the Qifeng City residents and took the antidote.

She then handed her "ugly doll" to Zhan Yan, asking him to keep it as a symbol of her, as she might no longer be able to protect it herself. She told him that she no longer loved him and asked him to forget her. Unfazed, Zhan Yan replied that her love wasn't necessary, as his love for her was sufficient. Duanmu Cui, filled with sorrow, urged him not to be so kind, calling it unworthy, and repeated her plea for him to forget her.
