Having discovered Qu Xiaotan's plan to sacrifice herself, Mo Liancheng rushes to the Empress Dowager's palace and stops her from drinking poison. He is furious that she would consider giving up her life, and they reaffirm their deep love, vowing to live and die together. Meanwhile, the Emperor confronts his son, Crown Prince Mo Yihuai, who arrives at the grand hall with a sinister, demonic appearance.
Mo Yihuai reveals his forces have surrounded the palace and that even the imperial guards are now under his control, leaving the Emperor powerless. Empowered by the soul hunters' dark energy, Mo Yihuai attacks Mo Liancheng and Qu Xiaotan in the palace gardens. Liu Qianshui intervenes to protect them, but he is overpowered by Mo Yihuai's newfound strength. Liu Qianshui manages to help Mo Liancheng escape, but Mo Yihuai captures Qu Xiaotan.
Back at the Eighth Prince's mansion, Liu Qianshui uses his energy to heal Mo Liancheng's injuries. Their strategist, Yu Hao, reports that the Crown Prince's army is advancing on the mansion. Mo Liancheng devises a counter-plan to lure the rebels into an ambush, using a loyal metropolitan garrison to attack them from the front and rear. In a dark dungeon, Mo Yihuai tortures Qu Xiaotan, demanding the Soul Bead.
Under extreme duress, her consciousness and Qu Tan'er's physically separate, appearing as two distinct people. Qu Tan'er desperately tries to reason with the man she once loved, recounting their shared memories. For a fleeting moment, Mo Yihuai seems to recognize her, but the dark magic quickly consumes him again. When he launches a fatal attack at Qu Xiaotan, Qu Tan'er shields her with her own body, sacrificing her life and dissipating into nothingness. Mo Liancheng arrives moments too late.
Grief-stricken, he is injured by Mo Yihuai, who now holds Qu Xiaotan hostage and demands the Soul Bead in exchange for her life. While Mo Liancheng agrees to the exchange to buy time, Liu Qianshui seeks out the soul hunters, believing he can free Mo Yihuai by destroying the magemark that controls him. At the tense meeting, Mo Yihuai forces Qu Xiaotan to play the Departed Soul Flute. The melody opens the box, and a purple light emerges as the Soul Bead shatters, its fragments embedding themselves in Qu Xiaotan's forehead.
