Prince Rui personally came to interrogate Governor Gao—he had promised Lu Chang to give him a chance to live. It was clear that the one behind Governor Gao was none other than Prince Rui. Governor Gao admitted that every word Lu Chang said was true and that they had evidence prepared in advance. Governor Gao hoped Prince Rui would protect his family's lives, and in return, he would testify against Prince Yu, as he held evidence of Prince Yu's corruption.

But he also warned them that Prince Yu's power was far beyond imagination. Back then, others had known about this too, but they all chose silence due to Prince Yu’s influence. Lu Chang stood firmly before Prince Rui, pledging to assist him in implementing new policies. Prince Rui was very pleased. Lu Chang frowned in distress.

According to Governor Gao, Minister Lu could have helped, but he chose to stand by and watch, indirectly leading to the destruction of the Jian family. Lu Chang was worried about how Jian Mingshu would face him, as Minister Lu was his biological father. That night, everyone went to the night market together. Yin Shujun, Jian Mingshu, and the Princess of Wen’an went as a group, while Prince Rui was already waiting for Yin Shujun.

As Yin Shujun went to find Prince Rui, Jian Mingshu took the initiative to talk to Song Qingzhao. Seeing this, Lu Chang couldn’t help but grow anxious. Jian Mingshu and Song Qingzhao bought a Kongming lantern and made a wish together. Jian Mingshu wanted to speak, and though Song Qingzhao initially tried to avoid it, Jian Mingshu spoke directly. She had once mistaken Song Qingzhao for the man in green from her dreams.

For a time, she thought it meant love, but she eventually understood—it wasn’t romantic affection. Song Qingzhao didn’t want to believe it and hoped she would give him more time. Prince Rui and Yin Shujun walked quite a distance together. Thinking she was tired, he carried her on his back. As they gazed at the lively scenery, they made a vow to join hands and protect the people of Da'an.

Su Tangli unexpectedly ran into Lu Chang—he didn’t expect her to still be in Jianglin. Lu Chang told Su Tangli that although Prince Yu appeared to be helping her take revenge by removing Wei Dushi, he was actually silencing people who knew too much. As for Su Tangli, Lu Chang no longer had the strength to persuade her.

Jian Mingshu asked Lu Chang whether Su Tangli was the young lady from Jianglin he had always thought of, and Lu Chang quickly denied it. Jian Mingshu then asked about the relationship between their two families—if it weren’t for Mr. Su’s evidence, would Lu Chang have still taken her in? Lu Chang assured her he would have, because her parents had shown him great kindness. They would return to the capital the next day.

Thinking back to the assassination attempt on the last trip, everything now felt like a dream. Back in the capital, Song Qingzhao was scolded by his father for leaving so abruptly. However, Song Qingzhao seemed emotionally distant, like a completely different person. He was like a lost soul—he knew Jian Mingshu’s heart did not belong to him, and there was nothing he could do.

When Lu Chang and Jian Mingshu returned home, Aunt Zeng was delighted to hear Jian Mingshu still willing to call her "Mother. " No matter what, they were still a family. Though the road ahead would be full of hardship, no matter how far she went, Aunt Zeng would always watch over her from behind. During the escort of Governor Gao back to the capital, the journey was unusually quiet.

Ying Xun found it odd, and unexpectedly, Governor Gao suddenly died in prison that very day. Prince Yu had sent someone to eliminate him. Su Tangli had returned to the capital several days ago but had not come to see Lu Chang. Governor Gao was unknowingly killed in the Dali Temple, and Lu Chang immediately turned his attention to Governor Lu, who would not sit still and wait for death.

Prince Yu was ruthless, so Governor Lu decided to form an alliance with Prince Rui to help him bring down Prince Yu. Su Tangli brought a knife and went to see Prince Yu—it was all an act. Prince Yu was acting too, completely denying that he was the real mastermind. Minister Lu came to the Dali Temple to visit Lu Chang. He was pleased that the Lu family now had a worthy successor, but Lu Chang questioned why he had ignored Jian Jinhai’s letter pleading for help.
