Ye Zhao forces Zhao Yujin to lift her bridal veil by pulling his hand, declaring their marriage complete. Zhao Yujin is initially resistant and curses Ye Zhao but is stunned by her appearance once the veil is lifted. The next morning, Zhao Yujin attempts to leave his study but is blocked by Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua, who insist he can only leave after consummating the marriage with Ye Zhao.
Outside the mansion, Liu Long and Zhang Gui facilitate Zhao Yujin's escape. Zhang Gui distracts Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua by imitating a cuckoo bird, allowing Zhao Yujin to climb a ladder over the wall and escape the estate. Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua discover and reprimand Zhang Gui, but Zhao Yujin is long gone. Meanwhile, Ye Zhao practices bowing outside the Grand Dowager's chambers. The Princess Consort approaches and, seeing Ye Zhao's intent, accompanies her inside.
The Grand Dowager, displeased with Ye Zhao, refuses her tea and gifts her a pair of white jade bracelets, urging her to become a gentle and virtuous wife. Ye Zhao immediately puts them on and tries a few martial arts movements to test if they hinder her. This infuriates the Grand Dowager, who feels misunderstood and retreats.
The Princess Consort comforts Ye Zhao, discreetly informing her about Zhao Yujin's household: Yang Shi is a concubine, while Meiniang and Xuan'er are "tongfang yahuan" (concubine-like maids). Ye Zhao is grateful for the information. Elsewhere, Yang Shi, Meiniang, and Xuan'er are terrified of meeting Ye Zhao, fearing she is a "living Yama" who will harm them. They decide to dress plainly and without makeup for their visit. Upon entering Ye Zhao's room, they are visibly trembling.
Ye Zhao, finding them merely odd, shows no malice. Instead, she gifts them valuable jewelry and, seeing Yang Shi's intelligence, appoints her to manage the household affairs, stating her own preoccupation with military matters. The concubines are relieved and surprised by Ye Zhao's kind demeanor, finding her not as terrifying as they had imagined, and even beginning to like her. Ye Zhao continues her daily martial arts practice in the courtyard, using a long spear.
Qiu Shui, Qiu Hua, Meiniang, and Xuan'er watch her, with Meiniang and Xuan'er particularly impressed by her prowess, expressing a desire to learn from her. Ye Zhao encourages them, saying anyone willing can try. Their laughter is interrupted when the Grand Dowager arrives, ordering Ye Zhao to find Zhao Yujin and bring him back.
Ye Zhao is reluctant, but the Grand Dowager threatens to take her own life and demands Ye Zhao kneel and beg Zhao Yujin if he refuses to return. Though inwardly defiant, Ye Zhao agrees out of respect for her elder. Zhao Yujin has been away from the mansion for seven days, engaging in leisure activities. He watches a wrestling match with friends, winning a small bet. When his friends mysteriously abandon him, he seeks refuge at Old Gao's lamb restaurant.
While chatting with Old Gao, Little Sparrow, Old Gao's son, rushes in and hides, pursued by ruffians demanding money from a lost bet. Zhao Yujin learns the bet was on whether he and Ye Zhao had consummated their marriage. Infuriated, he confronts the ruffians. As a fight is about to break out, Hu Qing, who has been quietly observing, intervenes, easily subduing the ruffians. Grateful for Hu Qing's assistance, Zhao Yujin invites him for a drink.
He is thrilled to discover Hu Qing is a renowned military strategist from the Song army, expressing long-held admiration. He then asks Hu Qing about his marital status. Hu Qing sadly replies that the woman he loves married someone else. Unaware that Hu Qing is referring to Ye Zhao, Zhao Yujin vehemently curses Ye Zhao, calling her "fickle" and criticizing her parents' judgment. He then enthusiastically offers to help Hu Qing win back his beloved, leaving Hu Qing with a mixed expression of amusement and exasperation.
