That day, the academy matron asked everyone to write an essay on “the virtues of women. ” Shangguan Jing wrote a piece titled Biographies of Exemplary Women and Disfavored Favorites, arguing that a woman’s virtue lies in uprightness, moral righteousness, and standing up for justice. Li Wei wrote Long Live Women, stating that men and women should be treated equally. The matron flew into a rage upon reading it and threatened to keep them in detention.

In fact, the matron knew everyone wanted Li Wei to take first place, so she hid the fact that Song Wu also participated in the exam, and then announced that Song Wu had won first place. The matron reported this to her superiors, which ended up implicating the various princes. Seeing Yin Zheng being scolded by his mother, Li Wei felt deeply guilty and quickly apologized, promising to win first place next time.

With the bandits leading the way, the two soon arrived in Jinchuan. The Jinchuan palace was splendid and imposing. Yin Zheng and Yin An entered the palace and met Lord Jinchuan. Yin An tried to use their distant familial connection to get closer, but Lord Jinchuan didn’t buy it at all and urged them to quickly pay back the silver debt. Yin Zheng promised Lord Jinchuan that Xinchuan would repay the debt, but just needed a bit more time.

To show Xinchuan’s sincerity, Yin Zheng offered to pay extra interest. However, the wealthy and arrogant Lord Jinchuan had no regard for the interest and publicly embarrassed the two princes. Yin Zheng’s mind raced. He recalled the bandits they had encountered the previous night and boldly guessed that Jinchuan’s urgency in demanding repayment was due to rampant banditry. Sure enough, this was exactly what was troubling Lord Jinchuan.

Sensing a possible compromise, Yin Zheng promised that Xinchuan would assist Jinchuan in eliminating the bandits. Lord Jinchuan was quite satisfied and immediately agreed to postpone the repayment of the silver debt. Before they knew it, the day of Yin Zheng’s return arrived. Despite the cold weather, Li Wei insisted on waiting outside the courtyard for Yin Zheng’s return. The bright moon hung high, seemingly also waiting for Yin Zheng to come home. Soon, Yin Zheng returned gracefully.

Seeing everyone looking glum, he thought Li Wei had done poorly on the exam. But then Li Wei’s expression changed, and she happily told him the good news that she had taken first place. Due to his major contributions in the Jinchuan affair, Lord Xinchuan decided to let Yin Zheng establish his residence ahead of schedule. Seeing that Li Wei still didn’t understand his intentions, Su Shen on the side was nearly driven mad with frustration. That day, Li Wei finally couldn’t help but ask Yin Zheng why he insisted on her getting first place. Yin Zheng took the chance to confess his feelings to her.
