Once it was late at night and quiet, Di Renjie and Lin Fan went together to meet Black Flame. During this time, Di Renjie shared the story of Chu Lei with Lin Fan, recounting a completely different version. In this version, from a young age, Chu Lei befriended a group of criminals, deeply experiencing the treachery of human nature, and in their frenzied killings, he gradually tempered his will and inner self, eventually descending into extreme darkness.

In Di Renjie's narration, in order to survive, Chu Lei forced himself to confront death. After round after round of slaughter, all that remained in his heart was mockery, cold indifference, and monstrous rage. Because the daily beatings and humiliation he endured all came from Black Flame, whom he once yearned for, and for the sake of Black Flame, he chose to break ties with his father, Di Zhixun.

Sure enough, as soon as Di Renjie finished speaking, Lin Fan's expression changed drastically. Just as Di Renjie said, he projected his own story onto Chu Lei. The man who was ruthless and disregarded human life was actually Di Ying, Di Renjie's elder brother who had not returned home for many years. Di Ying took Lin Fan's identity to collect Chu Lei's body, making everyone think he was Lin Fan.

Yet, to clear his suspicion, he stabbed himself, staging a scene in front of Cao An where Black Flame taught Lin Fan a lesson. But Di Renjie never understood why Di Ying had hidden in Lanfang and refused to show himself, only willing to come out and meet today. Di Ying revealed his long-held plans, including the principles he adhered to.

As sons of Di Zhixun, the brothers had starkly different personalities, one righteous and one evil, standing on opposite sides. Di Ying said that without Di Renjie, he might have lived in Lanfang under a different name, because he liked Lanfang where "the strong prevail and the weak know their place. " In contrast, Di Renjie wished to see Lanfang where the strong abide by the law, the weak live in peace and contentment, and the law maintains order.

Unfortunately, every word Di Renjie spoke sounded like a joke to Di Ying. Di Ying advocated violence and power, disdained human nature and law, and firmly believed that the law of the jungle was the truth of the world.

Seeing his elder brother so indifferent to right and wrong, Di Renjie felt a chill in his heart, sighing that it was the right decision for their father to drive him out of the house back then, and that he looked truly pathetic now. These words completely infuriated Di Ying. The two began a fierce confrontation and struggle, neither able to gain the upper hand. Finally, Di Renjie used all his strength and pierced Di Ying's chest with his sword.

Before his death, Di Ying scoffed that the Di family was both his origin and his destination. After this, Di Renjie lay awake all night due to his elder brother's death, memories of the past constantly surfacing in his mind. He had lost his last remaining family member in the world and also lost the wooden sword that had grown up with him since childhood.

As the Double Ninth Festival approached, Ma Rong invited Cao An to ascend a height together to enjoy the scenery. After Hong Liang checked the almanac, he found that September was an auspicious month for weddings, so he asked Cao An to choose a date for the wedding. Cao An hesitated slightly and suggested that Di Renjie should make the decision. Di Renjie casually chose the twentieth, which happened to coincide with an extremely Yin and dark total solar eclipse.

Originally, the two planned to get married, but the matter concerning Di Ying created a rift. Hong Liang sensed that Di Renjie had a reservation and persuaded him not to run away. Before Hong Liang could finish speaking, Di Renjie turned and left. When passing by Cao An's room, the Bingzhou folk tune coming from inside reminded Di Renjie of Di Ying, leaving him with mixed feelings.

That day, Cao An came to find Di Renjie and said there was a Crescent Spring to the south that could relieve worries, and she wanted to travel there together during the Double Ninth Festival to pray and bless their future life. Di Renjie gladly agreed. When Hong Liang learned of this, he cautioned them not to go to temples or Taoist monasteries and to be extra careful on the road.

After watching Di Renjie and Cao An's carriage disappear into the distance, Hong Liang and others returned to the residence and found that Di Renjie had forgotten to bring his Yulong sword. Hong Liang guessed he had done it on purpose. After the carriage had traveled a distance, Di Renjie chose to stop and rest by the woods. He gathered firewood, made a fire, and grilled a pancake for Cao An to eat. The two remained silent throughout, and the atmosphere was particularly heavy.
