Shen Ci’s diary recorded that a year ago, late at night, Miao Zhuang had returned to the dormitory in a panic after going to the bathroom. He told Shen Ci he had accidentally seen Dean Chen heading to the back mountain, carrying a lantern. On the mountain, several boats stood with ghostly figures on each, their lanterns glowing in unison, each bearing a ripple pattern. Miao Zhuang was terrified and died suddenly that same night.

Shen Ci found it suspicious but dared not speak out. He secretly invited a coroner to examine the body, only for Dean Chen to claim Miao Zhuang had the plague and had him burned. Shen Ci had a few words with Dean Chen and was then targeted by Chen Fu and others, who took pleasure in tormenting him.

Pan Yue speculated that the back mountain was likely a base for the Shuibowen organization, and Miao Zhuang was silenced after seeing their secret. Pan Yue and Yang Caiwei remembered hearing water sounds during their previous visit to the back mountain and immediately returned, finding a cave entrance. Pan Yue and Yang Caiwei descended into the cave, which indeed had water and signs of stored goods. It appeared their progress had already been noticed.

Yang Caiwei found a piece of cloth, possibly from a cargo bag, and they decided to take it back for study. Unexpectedly, Dean Chen had already discovered their whereabouts. He planned to kill them. As they fled through the mountains, they suddenly heard cries for help from a box. Pan Yue went to investigate and discovered it was Shen Yan’s Illusion Bug—he was bitten!

Yang Caiwei was frantic, and at that moment, a group of black-clad assassins appeared to kill them. Pan Yue, enduring the pain, struggled to fight back. As his vision failed, Yang Caiwei had to shout directions for him to fight, but in the chaos, she accidentally fell off a cliff. Pan Yue, panicked, jumped after her. Blind and hearing no response, he could only shout her name over and over.

When Yang Caiwei woke up, she realized he had always known her identity and had only ever cared for her. Touched, she hugged him tightly. Bai Xiaosheng found information about the jade toad for Zhuo Lanjiang. The two of them hid in a corner to observe and became awkward due to their close proximity. They followed the buyer all the way to the back mountain of Yin Yulou.

Worried for Bai Xiaosheng’s safety, Zhuo Lanjiang went alone, only to unexpectedly open his father’s tomb and enter a secret chamber. Zhuo Lanjiang followed and saw someone incredibly familiar. Yang Caiwei tried every method to treat Pan Yue’s eyes, but suddenly none of them worked, and his eyes even began to bleed. Distressed, she went to question Shen Yan in prison. Shen Yan said if there was no improvement in three days, he might lose his sight forever.

Trapped in darkness, Pan Yue was consumed again by childhood trauma. Desperately, he cried out for A Ze. Hearing this, Yang Caiwei rushed in and, seeing his embarrassment, brought up the time he stole a kiss from her in an abandoned temple, teasing that she should kiss him back. But Pan Yue took the initiative. While helping him clean up, Yang Caiwei saw the scar on his abdomen—left by the official who stabbed him after her supposed death.

Learning the truth, Yang Caiwei was even more guilt-ridden. Pan Yue had done so much for her, yet she had doubted him. Pan Yue knew his eyes might never recover, but even if he became a burden, he didn’t want to leave Yang Caiwei. Zhuo Lanjiang was imprisoned by his father. Upon seeing him again, Zhuo Lanjiang realized he had always been manipulated like a puppet.

Years ago, Zhuo's father and his sworn brother went to the capital, where the brother became a high-ranking official—only to be betrayed by Zhuo’s father using the Jinshui Gang. He had seen them as brothers, but was treated like a dog. To lull his enemies, he had Sun Zhen summon Zhuo Lanjiang back. It turned out he was also behind the deaths of Yang Caiwei’s father and her own.

Devastated, Zhuo Lanjiang repeatedly asked who the mastermind was, but his father still demanded loyalty, saying some paths, once taken, cannot be undone. Zhuo Lanjiang, disillusioned, told him to leave. Since childhood, he had believed his father was a hero of Yin Yulou, not a groveling guard dog wagging its tail. Yang Caiwei administered acupuncture to treat Pan Yue—it was a one-shot chance, but Pan Yue trusted her unconditionally. Fortunately, she succeeded, and Pan Yue regained his sight.

Zhuo Lanjiang had not been seen for several days. When Bai Xiaosheng asked Ah Fu, he was told Zhuo Lanjiang had some business to handle. Yang Caiwei suddenly realized that the goods stored in the back mountain were likely smuggled salt. Pan Yue organized a raid on Xinzheng Academy, but Dean Chen had already fled.
