Ren Lao and Ren Yuan appeared before House Master Bai Choufei late at night, reporting that a scout from the North confirmed Mr. Thirteen and the Marquis had failed to locate a crucial dispatch order. They concluded it must have fallen into Wang Xiaoshi’s hands. Bai Choufei, more concerned with palace politics, asked if Chancellor Cai knew. The two gave conflicting answers, revealing Ren Yuan had already reported the matter directly to the reclusive Chancellor.

Bai Choufei praised the decision with a chilling smile. After they left, Ren Lao expressed fear of reprisal, but Ren Yuan pragmatically reminded him of their status as "dogs" who serve the powerful—first Official Fu, then the Chancellor, and now Bai Choufei—and that survival depends on submission. Later, Bai Choufei encountered Wen Rou, who had returned to the Capital. He invited her to Chou Shi House, their old residence, to reminisce.

Wen Rou showed him drawings she had made of their friends and past adventures. A flashback showed Bai Choufei drawing a portrait of himself, Wang Xiaoshi, and Wen Rou, meant as a good luck charm. In the present, Wen Rou confronted him over his betrayal, particularly his murder of Su Mengzhen, which left Wang Xiaoshi without his two sworn brothers. Bai Choufei furiously retorted that he and Mengzhen were never true brothers, their bond only existing through Wang Xiaoshi.

He railed against Mengzhen’s privileged birth versus his own suffering, arguing that the pinnacle of the martial world could only hold one, making their conflict inevitable. Wen Rou was horrified, reminding him that Mengzhen never wanted to kill him and that many from the House of Sunset Drizzle died trying to save him from prison.

Bai Choufei blamed Mengzhen for their deaths, insisting no one helped him during his ordeal and that he reached his current position through his own strength, needing no one’s pity. Seeing their friendship was broken beyond repair, Wen Rou returned the portrait Bai Choufei had drawn, stating it was no longer appropriate for her or Wang Xiaoshi to keep it.

Believing his own image was absent, Bai Choufei took the drawing to tear it but paused, noticing his likeness had been added in a style he recognized as Wang Xiaoshi's. A flicker of complex emotion crossed his face before he asked Wen Rou for one last "favor" and ordered his subordinates to take her captive. Meanwhile, following a plan devised by Divine Marquis Zhuge Zhengwo, Wang Xiaoshi's allies staged an ambush to secure an audience with the Emperor.

As His Majesty visited Dafo Temple, the masked allies created a disturbance, separating him from his guards and forcing him into a secluded alley. There, he was met by Zhuge Zhengwo and the un-reinstated Official Liu Anshi. His Majesty angrily berated the two elders for their reckless scheme, but Zhuge Zhengwo explained it was the only way to meet him.

Wang Xiaoshi then arrived and presented the Emperor with the critical dispatch order he had retrieved from the North, which implicated Chancellor Cai. At the same time, Yang Wuxie and other allies anxiously awaited news. Ren Lao appeared, identifying himself as Bai Choufei's man and revealing that Wen Rou had been abducted and was being held at the House of Sunset Drizzle. Bai Choufei demanded the evidence against Chancellor Cai in exchange for her life.

Realizing Bai Choufei’s madness, Yang Wuxie immediately sent a messenger to inform Wang Xiaoshi and rallied everyone to rescue Wen Rou. Before they left, Ren Lao begged someone to stab him, explaining that Bai Choufei had threatened to have his brother, Ren Yuan, dismembered if he returned unharmed. The group, focused on Wen Rou's rescue, ignored his pleas. Left with no choice, Ren Lao tragically stabbed himself.

At the House of Sunset Drizzle, Ren Yuan pleaded with Bai Choufei to spare his brother, offering to take any punishment himself. Bai Choufei feigned forgiveness and offered Ren Yuan a drink, only to kick him to the ground and step on him. He coldly told Wen Rou this was the power he now wielded, recalling how Ren Yuan had once forced him to eat raw meat.

In a final act of defiance, Ren Yuan lunged at Bai Choufei with a dagger but was effortlessly struck down and killed. Filled with grim resolve, Wang Xiaoshi tore a strip from a piece of red cloth reminiscent of Su Mengzhen's attire and tied it to his arm. He then took up his sword and met Yang Wuxie and the members of Elephant Trunk Tower, the new sect Wang Xiaoshi founded.

They launched a full-scale assault on the House of Sunset Drizzle, turning former brothers into enemies under a blood-red sky. Confronting Bai Choufei, Wang Xiaoshi demanded Wen Rou's release and justice for Mengzhen's death. Bai Choufei scoffed, refusing to be held accountable for the dead and threatening both Wang Xiaoshi and Wen Rou. Wang Xiaoshi swore that if any harm came to Wen Rou, he would seek retribution even in the Imperial Palace.

Inside the House, Wang Xiaoshi and Bai Choufei fought a fierce duel, culminating in both being severely injured and collapsing. With her captors distracted, the bound Wen Rou kicked over a brazier of hot coals, burning through her ropes. As she fled, she passed the "Tree of Sorrow" and recalled something Mengzhen once told her: a secret passage, known only to the House Masters, was hidden beneath it, activated by a distant stone lantern.

She triggered the mechanism, opening the passage. To her astonishment, Lei Chun emerged carrying a sedan chair, inside which sat a gravely ill Su Mengzhen. Wen Rou recognized the scent of "One Branch of Poisonous Embroidery," a potent remedy from her family that could prolong life at the cost of turning the user into a mindless puppet. Heartbroken, she questioned how the proud Mengzhen could choose such an existence.

Weakly, he confirmed he knew the consequences and made the choice willingly, telling her not to blame Lei Chun. He explained that without the ability to wield his blade, this was his only option, and his survival was "all for tonight's sake." Mengzhen urged her to leave, but Wen Rou refused, declaring her resolve to stay and fight alongside them, as everyone present was important to her.
