Bai Lingling was on a date with a junior student, trying to gauge their budding romance while watching a horror film. When the junior said no, Ouyang Yifan claimed he couldn't reach him, so he came to the cinema.
Feeling annoyed, Bai Lingling decided to leave, telling her date the movie was too scary and she needed ice cream to calm down. Meanwhile, Yang Lanhang, having studied a relationship guide, deduced that Bai Lingling's apparent dislike for Materials Science was merely superficial; in reality, she yearned to work in a laboratory. He immediately went online to chat with Bai Lingling.
Bai Lingling, who was studying, hastily retrieved a DVD of "Before Sunrise" that Guan Xiaoyu owned and claimed she was watching a movie. Guan Xiaoyu, on a separate outing with a junior student named Zhao Lei, was confronted by Ouyang Yifan in the parking lot. Ouyang Yifan dramatically announced that Zhao Lei's ex-girlfriend, Linda, had recently ingested over a hundred sleeping pills and that he was the one who saved her. Bai Lingling, however, pointed out a flaw in his design, suggesting that it should also allow for extending the probation period, as some people are "slow-burners." Despite Guan Xiaoyu’s urging to quit the "unreliable" situation, Bai Lingling resolved to stay for a month to earn money and maintain face with her net friend. Later, Yang Lanhang, as the net friend, messaged Bai Lingling, asking if she could stay up for about an hour while he finished an experiment, so they could watch the movie together at 2:30 AM. Bai Lingling, meanwhile, observed that Yang Lanhang seemed to have few friends and was rather pathetic for having to consult her on relationship matters. He revealed that the university had inquired about her and that he wouldn't have hired her if Yang Lanhang hadn't personally intervened, as the college didn't have a specific position for a laboratory cleaner. Professor Jiang also implied that Yang Lanhang was privately paying Bai Lingling's salary. Yang Lanhang requested that Professor Jiang keep this a secret, explaining that he saw genuine talent in Bai Lingling in Materials Science and wanted to mentor her.
Separately, Ouyang Yifan received a dossier on Guan Xiaoyu's latest date, only to discover that it was yet another "douchebag" named Zhao Lei, who was reportedly involved in numerous "romantic affairs" and was a "gigolo." The investigator even suggested that Guan Xiaoyu might possess a "douchebag-attracting constitution," prompting Ouyang Yifan to lament about his perceived duty to "save" her from these undesirable men.
