Blossoms in Adversity Episode 37 Recap
> Blossoms in Adversity Recap
Emperor Qing summoned the Immortal Envoy. The Immortal Envoy pledged to serve His Majesty with unwavering loyalty. Gu Chengtao was very pleased and appointed the Immortal Envoy as the Envoy of Heavenly Pivot, keeping him in the Imperial Astronomical Institute within the Forbidden Palace for worship. Gu Yanxi was surprised, but the Immortal Envoy said it was simply a good deal made with the emperor. Gu Yanxi went to pay respects to Gu Chengtao.
Gu Chengtao told him that the country had suffered from a long drought, with no harvest for the people and great unrest. To prevent rebellion, he chose to cooperate with the Immortal Envoy, who would pray for rain daily. If rain came, it would be with the support of the court; if not, they would kill the Immortal Envoy to appease the public. Hua Zhi returned home, only to find Hua Rong’s body waiting for them.
Upon hearing that the emperor had personally appointed a Heavenly Pivot Envoy who could summon wind and rain, Hua Zhi went with the others to witness the rain ritual. After the ceremony, dark clouds gathered, and the people all knelt and kowtowed—only Hua Zhi remained standing. The Immortal Envoy blamed the failure to bring rain on Hua Zhi and had her bound and brought to the palace. Gu Chengtao questioned Hua Zhi for disrupting the rain ritual.
Hua Zhi remained silent. Gu Chengtao smiled and asked if her silence was out of fear. Unable to bear it, Hua Zhi retorted that Gu Chengtao was too cowardly to believe in such superstitions. Gu Chengtao responded that he knew all her actions over the years—accumulating wealth through business, hiding a treasure room at home, and exploiting the ransom copper law tied to Qing Law.
Seeing that Hua Zhi didn’t deny it, Gu Chengtao said he would issue another decree: the male members of the Hua family would never be pardoned. Gu Yanxi waited outside the palace until Hua Zhi was released and escorted her home. Hua Zhi returned home in a daze, said nothing, and rushed to the treasure room, where she frantically knocked over all the money boxes and bags.
She broke down crying, saying she regretted ever meeting Gu Yanxi, then fainted on the ground. At that moment, an imperial decree arrived, granting permission for Hua Zhi to use her entire fortune to dredge the canals near the capital. Gu Yanxi told the madams that the Hua family’s men would never return. The women fell into despair. After waking up, Hua Zhi sat in a daze holding the decree.
Gu Yanxi brought her medicine, and Hua Zhi leaned on his shoulder, saying that even if she didn’t donate, what would it change? Gu Yanxi, worried she would be punished, told her he was now willing to be her shield and that they could leave the capital together. Hua Zhi was overjoyed that Gu Yanxi had finally turned away from the blade. Now she knew what choice to make.
Hua Zhi told everyone that since their loved ones couldn’t come back, they would go north to reunite with them, and Gu Yanxi would go with them. The Fourth Madam saw through Hua Zhi’s plan—she intended to sacrifice herself for everyone’s sake. Hua Zhi took the seal to assume control of the family and instructed the Third Madam to distribute the money among them and prepare to depart for the north.
But the Third Madam immediately snatched the seal away and threw it aside, saying the money was earned by all and Hua Zhi couldn’t decide alone. After a vote, everyone agreed to donate the money to protect Hua Zhi. Late at night, Hua Zhi was still doing the accounts. The canal was blocked, and even her entire fortune couldn’t cover the cost of dredging it. Gu Yanxi held her hand and said he had always been by her side.
The Hua family decided to sell off their property to fund the repairs, and when the city’s shopkeepers heard the news, they all expressed their willingness to help financially, even the Shen family contributed. Gu Yanxi gave all the money from the Prince Ling’s residence to Hua Zhi and also passed along the Empress Dowager’s goodwill. Hua Zhi was deeply moved. Now that they both had nothing left, Gu Yanxi took out the jade bracelet and put it back on Hua Zhi’s wrist.
