Blossoms in Adversity Episode 31 Recap
> Blossoms in Adversity Recap
Yingchun saw Granny Zhang selling hairpins near Sun Xiang’s residence and used buying a hairpin as an excuse to find out that Sun Xiang had eight concubines. Gu Yanxi and Hua Zhi were flying kites by the river. Gu Yanxi said he was too dull, but Hua Zhi laughed and said being dull was good. With his handsome looks, if he were also interesting, many girls would flock to him, and she wouldn’t be able to compete.
It's better to stay the way he is so that only she likes him. Shen Huan saw Shao Yao on the street and immediately threw away the rouge he had just bought. He grabbed Shao Yao and ran off, telling her that only with her could he truly be himself. He had thought a lot these past days and realized he must have feelings for her. Shao Yao, still innocent, didn’t understand what it meant to have feelings.
Shen Huan anxiously tried to explain, but seeing how young she still was, he eventually said softly, “Maybe this is as far as we can go,” and then turned and walked away. Yingchun investigated Sun Xiang’s shop and found it in complete disarray, with an unknown amount of financial losses. Even so, he shamelessly wanted Yingchun to marry him as his ninth concubine and raise his former wife’s children. Such brazen audacity earned him one word from Yingchun—“Leave.
” Gu Yanxi saw the Empress Dowager in the palace. She sighed that being born into the royal family meant following the will of Heaven and the emperor, and said she didn’t blame Gu Yanxi for what happened with Prince Xian. Upon learning that Gu Yanxi had found someone to warm his heart, the Empress Dowager removed the jade bracelet from her wrist and gave it to him. It had been her dowry from her mother.
Yingchun told Hua Qin everything about Sun Xiang. Hua Qin thanked her for sharing. After school, Hua Qin deliberately threw a stone on the ground to trip Sun Xiang’s son Xin’er, then used the opportunity to comfort him and escort him home. Seeing this, Sun Xiang immediately prepared a dowry and went to the Hua family to propose marriage.
Hua Qin was determined to marry Sun Xiang, and no matter how Hua Zhi tried to persuade her otherwise, she wouldn’t change her mind. So, everyone could only respect her choice. Gu Yanxi gave Hua Zhi the bracelet from the Empress Dowager, saying it was a gift from an elder in his family and a token of his feelings. Hua Qin became Sun Xiang’s lawfully wedded wife. The deed contracts of the concubines were all in her hands.
As the lady of the house, she naturally had authority and quickly asserted herself over the concubines—even Sun Xiang was sweating under pressure. Someone from the palace summoned a representative from the Hua family to bring pastries and have a talk, and Hua Zhi went. When the Empress Dowager saw the bracelet on Hua Zhi’s wrist, she immediately understood and was delighted that Gu Yanxi and Hua Zhi were brave enough to be together despite their statuses.
She spoke of her past with Lin Wan. They had agreed only to talk about girlhood tales and nothing else, so it never occurred to her to meet Lin Wan’s children or grandchildren. When the Empress Dowager and Lin Wan first met, the Empress Dowager was troubled about marriage, and Lin Wan was out hunting. She rode past Zihuang Residence and then stayed to spend the summer with her.
It was at Zihuang Residence that the Empress Dowager first rode a horse. Later, she married the late emperor and gifted the residence to Lin Wan. Although the Empress Dowager was happy that Gu Yanxi had won Hua Zhi’s heart, she warned Hua Zhi that life in the palace was like an endless sea. What she saw at the Prince Ling’s manor was already narrow; the palace would be even more so.
Hua Zhi replied that she trusted Gu Yanxi and also herself. Gu Yanxi returned the wine that Hua Zhi’s fourth uncle had buried years ago. Since the mourning period for Prince Ling was still ongoing, Gu Yanxi couldn’t do anything yet, but Hua Zhi understood and said she was willing to wait. Shao Yao sat alone on the steps, recalling moments with Shen Huan. Hua Zhi came to find her, and Shao Yao asked if everyone had to get married.
After some prompting, Shao Yao said Shen Huan was getting married, and he looked so sad that it made her feel sad too. Hua Zhi comforted her, saying she could give Shen Huan a gift. So, on the road where Shen Huan was heading to propose marriage to the Jiang family, Shao Yao stopped him and returned the elephant chess game.
The missing pawn that had been lost before—she had carved a new one for him so he could continue playing with others in the future. As she turned to leave, Shao Yao cried in sorrow.
