Gongzi, finding Wan Mei dispirited, shared his own life story with her. He recounted how, in his youth, he was an unstoppable Grand Tutor, and being blinded was deemed the only way to ensure his safety. At the time, he felt that dying would be preferable to living blind, much like Wan Mei's current despair.

His mother brought him to this place, and he instructed Wan Mei to close her eyes, explaining that firefly worms could act as a "third eye," allowing one to see and feel through heat. He then showed her the "Hover between Life and Death" manual, a sophisticated mental process created by the Bloody Lotus Cult's founder and passed down by his mother. He explained that anyone practicing it would undergo a life-and-death trial within seven days.

A heart without hope would lead to a painless death, but a heart clinging to hope would overcome the trial and be reborn with greatly increased power, though it would harm the heart. Gongzi stated he would seal the Single Dragon Door and return in seven days to see if she was alive and had found a reason to live. Wan Mei, unfazed by the risk, accepted the challenge, stating she was not afraid of death.

Meanwhile, Chang An, still recovering from his severe punishment, received the formula for a Beauty-recovering Ointment from Liu Guang. Believing Gongzi would most wish for Wan Mei's recovery, Chang An brought the formula to him, though he had trouble locating Wan Mei. Gongzi entrusted the task of acquiring the elusive ingredients to Yue Ying, expecting her to complete it within seven days.

Yue Ying, concerned for Gongzi’s well-being, questioned his decision to heal Wan Mei’s face and let her practice the Bloody Lotus Cult's most advanced technique, especially since it meant not taking her heart. She reminded him that his own life would be in danger within half a month if Wan Mei's heart, which contained Nine Lives, was not extracted.

Gongzi, however, insisted he was fine and that Wan Mei was the most suitable candidate to optimize the efficacy of Nine Lives. He reminded Yue Ying that they owed Wan Mei and must repay her, dismissing Yue Ying’s emotional accusations of him crossing the line, though Yue Ying admitted her jealousy. Seven days later, Gongzi returned to the Single Dragon Door, where Wan Mei successfully emerged. She affirmed that not dying meant she still harbored hope for living.

Gongzi expressed his relief, and Wan Mei confidently declared she would live well and never surrender her destiny to anyone. When asked about her progress, Wan Mei admitted she wasn't sure of the extent of her mastery but felt the firefly worms were no longer uncontrollable. Later, Wan Xiang, seeking to humiliate Wan Mei, found her and taunted her about her ruined face and failed mission.

She then "casually" asked Wan Mei to retrieve her kite from the roof of Wan Mei's dwelling. Once Wan Mei was on the roof, Wan Xiang maliciously ordered her shadow, February, to remove the ladder, knowing Wan Mei had lost her martial arts. Trapped, Wan Mei, out of desperation, attempted to use the "Hover between Life and Death" technique. To her astonishment, she successfully leaped from the rooftop, landing safely and demonstrating that she had regained her martial arts.

Wan Xiang, witnessing this, became even more uneasy and instructed February to continue monitoring Wan Mei. That night, alone in her room, Wan Mei lit candles, her thoughts drifting back to Chang An, recalling his past promises and gentle words, feeling an immense sense of solitude. The following day, Yue Ying delivered the Beauty-recovering Ointment to Wan Mei, but unbeknownst to them, Wan Xiang had tampered with it.

The altered ointment caused Wan Mei such discomfort that she was forced to seek assistance at Ting Zhu House late at night, appearing disheveled. Cha Luo, upon learning of Wan Xiang’s prank, was greatly amused and, feeling vindicated, assigned Wan Xiang the mission to assassinate Supreme Killer Cha Wu, promising her the coveted position if she succeeded.

Cha Luo then summoned Wan Mei, condescendingly remarking on her disfigured face and lack of martial arts, questioning her fitness as a junior killer. Wan Mei offered to step down, but Cha Luo, surprisingly, praised her attentiveness and calm demeanor. To silence her critics, Cha Luo assigned Wan Mei an "easy" task: to supervise the upcoming Supreme Killer battle. Cha Luo then revealed the shocking truth that Cha Wu and Wan Xiang were mother and daughter.

She explained that Cha Wu had once married a wealthy man, Mo Qian Jun, during a mission, and had given birth to Wan Xiang before being recalled by the former Lady, Lan He, forcing her to abandon her family and property. This revelation left Wan Mei deeply conflicted. Cha Luo later informed Liu Guang of her plan, which greatly distressed Liu Guang, who understood Cha Wu's fate was sealed.

Feeling compassion for Cha Wu, Liu Guang sought out Xing Feng and requested to handle the site-clearing after the battle. Xing Feng, citing his duty and the need for Cha Luo’s approval, declined her request, further stating that Liu Guang was being pessimistic as the battle hadn't even begun. Xing Feng reported Liu Guang's request to Cha Luo. Cha Luo, surprised by Liu Guang's concern for Cha Wu, mused that Liu Guang's reaction had given her a new idea.

To further complicate matters for Wan Mei, Cha Luo decided that Chang An would conduct the site-clearing, partly as a favor to Liu Guang and partly to observe Wan Mei's reaction. Wan Mei, concerned for Wan Xiang, visited her and subtly hinted that her current assassination plan was too crude and that she should reconsider, especially since Cha Wu was also an expert in incense.

Wan Xiang, however, dismissed Wan Mei's advice, confident in her own abilities, leaving Wan Mei helpless. Later, Chang An arrived at Wan Mei’s residence, stating he was ordered by Liu Guang to assist in supervising the battle and prevent any shadow interference. Wan Mei, still cold towards him, wanted him to leave, but Chang An insisted he was bound by orders.

He then cautiously warned Wan Mei to be wary, suggesting that Cha Luo and Cha Wu, having entered Gui Hua City at the same time, might harbor a deep-seated resentment, and that entering Gui Hua City was easy, but leaving was not, with many ending up as pawns in others' schemes. Wan Mei, exasperated, questioned what kind of plan she, as a mere supervisor, could possibly make, and again urged him to leave.
