As Yu Du sought clues about the spy, he witnessed Hong Luan being injured by Chi Nü while Cheng Qi stood nearby. Realizing Cheng Qi's treachery, Yu Du intended to report him to Duanmu Cui, but Cheng Qi brutally murdered Yu Du to prevent the exposure of his collusion with the Demon Clan. Soon after, Wen Gu and Zhan Yan arrived at the scene, discovering Yu Du's lifeless body and the unconscious Hong Luan.

Cheng Qi quickly appeared with his men, deceitfully accusing Zhan Yan and Wen Gu of being the murderers and spies, and had them taken into custody. Meanwhile, Jiang Wenqing, having observed the unfolding events for days, confirmed that the historical trajectory remained unchanged, and he merely needed to await the moment of apotheosis. The sisters of the Duanmu Brigade were heartbroken by Yu Du's death, vowing to find his killer and avenge him.

Duanmu Cui, mistakenly believing Zhan Yan and Wen Gu were the murderers, stormed into the jail. Zhan Yan was stunned to encounter Duanmu Cui again under such circumstances. Overwhelmed by grief, Duanmu Cui charged into his cell, thrusting her sword towards him without a word. Zhan Yan realized that this version of Duanmu Cui had no recollection of him.

He recalled Yang Jian's warning that the Abyss was a realm beyond the present world; while Duanmu Cui might survive there, his own presence would be erased unless she remembered and accepted him, otherwise he faced certain death. Yet, Zhan Yan remained resolute, convinced he could awaken Duanmu Cui and lead her out of the Abyss.

Duanmu Cui, though still in pain, began to question Zhan Yan's guilt, observing his exceptional combat skills and courage, which seemed inconsistent with a killer. She decided to interrogate him properly. Suddenly, Gu Chang burst into the jail. Having heard of Zhan Yan's prowess, he demanded a duel to test Zhan Yan's strength. Injured, Zhan Yan was quickly overpowered by Gu Chang. Duanmu Cui, feeling a strange familiarity with Zhan Yan, intervened to stop Gu Chang.

She remembered Yu Du's previous account of Zhan Yan rescuing him from the Demon Clan, making her suspect a deeper conspiracy. Duanmu Cui noticed Zhan Yan's sword, Ju Que, seemed to resonate with her, deepening her suspicion.

When she later inquired about it with Gu Chang, he remarked on its ancient and powerful nature, noting that Jiang Yi's father believed it to be Ju Que, one of the four ancient divine weapons, and its wielder a "chosen by God" whose destiny was unpredictable. He suggested that if Zhan Yan could be used, he would strengthen their army; if not, he should be eliminated. Duanmu Cui vehemently rejected the idea of elimination.

Duanmu Cui then met with Jiang Yi to seek revenge for Yu Du. Gao Bo Jian, present at the meeting, accused Duanmu Cui of protecting a criminal. Duanmu Cui countered by suggesting Cheng Qi was involved in the spy conspiracy. Jiang Yi, stopping their argument, stressed the urgency of the war and the primary goal of seizing the city. He promised to personally investigate the spy matter, acknowledging its gravity.

Duanmu Cui requested to lead the attack on Anyi City, which Jiang Yi approved, setting the assault for ten days later. Meanwhile, in his tent, Gao Bo Jian confronted Cheng Qi, accusing him of treachery. Cheng Qi admitted to sabotaging Yu Du's horse with 'stiffening medicine' but vehemently denied killing Yu Du or being a spy, claiming his actions were for Gao Bo Jian's benefit.

Convinced by Cheng Qi's denials, Gao Bo Jian dismissed the suspicion that Cheng Qi was the spy. Later, A Mi attempted to tend to Zhan Yan's wounds, but Duanmu Cui stopped her, reminding her to guard him, not serve him. Zhan Yan then asked A Mi to leave, stating he needed to discuss confidential military matters with Duanmu Cui alone. Once they were alone, Zhan Yan reiterated that he came to Anyi specifically to take her away.

Duanmu Cui questioned his presence near Yu Du's body. Zhan Yan explained that he arrived as Yu Du was taking his last breath, and Yu Du tried to reveal the identity of the military spy before he died. Zhan Yan deduced that Yu Du was murdered precisely because he discovered the spy, whom Zhan Yan suspected to be Cheng Qi. He proposed examining Yu Du's body for clues.

Meanwhile, Cheng Qi transmitted information about Duanmu Cui's planned attack on Anyi City in ten days to the crown prince of the Demon Clan, who then selected his strongest warriors as vanguard troops. Zhan Yan's examination of Yu Du's body revealed the killer was left-handed and used a curved sword. He further reasoned that the murderer would try to silence the witnesses held in jail.

Acting on this, Zhan Yan and Duanmu Cui rushed to the jail, where they thwarted an attempt by Demon Clan assassins to kill Hong Luan and Wen Gu. Wen Gu confirmed to Duanmu Cui that Zhan Yan was innocent and that Hong Luan had indeed seen the true killer. Zhan Yan and Wen Gu revisited the crime scene, finding distinctive grass seeds that Zhan Yan had also noticed on Yu Du's body.

Duanmu Cui devised a plan, publicly announcing that Hong Luan was recovering and would soon wake up. As expected, Cheng Qi, hearing this, came to kill Hong Luan that night and was apprehended by Duanmu Cui. In Cheng Qi's tent, Zhan Yan found incriminating letters exchanged between Cheng Qi and the crown prince of the Demon Clan. Jiang Yi arrived and learned the full truth.

Before Duanmu Cui exacted revenge by killing Cheng Qi with Yu Du's sword, Cheng Qi managed to use a Demon Clan artifact to transmit information about the military camp to the Demon Clan prince. Duanmu Cui thanked Zhan Yan for his help in uncovering Yu Du's killer. To console her, Zhan Yan described the vibrant streets of his hometown, Qifeng, and then produced candies from his Qiankun bag, sharing them with her.

Watching Zhan Yan's interaction with Duanmu Cui, Jiang Wenqing grew concerned that Zhan Yan, the "only variable in the Abyss," might jeopardize his plans, and resolved to keep a close eye on him.
