Thoracic surgeon Lin Zhifeng, along with nurses Yang Yuan, Liu Yu, and Mi Ka, all signed up for Shao Yuhan’s medical team. Shao Yuhan reminded everyone that the area they were going to—Xinguan Village in Linan County—was only partially accessible by vehicle, and the rest of the journey had to be completed on foot. Xing Kelei was also among those heading to Xinguan Village.
Halfway through the trip, everyone got out of the car with their supplies and began hiking toward the village. Upon arrival, they efficiently evacuated and treated the injured villagers. The next day, while continuing their search and rescue efforts, the team discovered a patient with gas gangrene. After a brief examination, Shao Yuhan instructed the team to immediately prepare for surgery. Given the infectious nature of gas gangrene, everyone took strict protective measures.
Back at base camp, Shu Wenbo learned via walkie-talkie that Linjia Village had experienced an aftershock. He quickly led a small team to provide support. Ruan Qingxia, who overheard this, followed Shu Wenbo to help. In Linjia Village, rescuers discovered a little girl buried under rubble. Ruan Qingxia joined in the rescue effort, but nearby reporters tried to conduct interviews despite the emergency. Angered, Ruan Qingxia scolded them away. Fortunately, the girl was successfully rescued.
With Shu Wenbo’s approval, Ruan Qingxia decided to film a public service video urging residents to be cautious of aftershocks and to avoid staying indoors. Meanwhile, Shu Wenbo was trying to convince Granny Zhang to go to the temporary relief point, but she insisted on waiting for her husband. Ruan Qingxia stepped in and offered to film a video for the rescue team, so they could all help search for her husband.
Just as they persuaded Granny Zhang, another aftershock struck. Shu Wenbo quickly led her out of the house and returned to pull Ruan Qingxia out too. Thankfully, no one was injured. Ruan Qingxia kept her promise and filmed a video to help find Granny Zhang’s husband, Liu Aiguo. Granny Zhang described his appearance and mentioned that he had Alzheimer’s, hoping people could help find him.
That night, Ruan Qingxia watched the video for Granny Zhang with her headphones on, not realizing Shu Wenbo had arrived. He called out several times, but thinking she was ignoring him out of anger, he quickly apologized for his previous mistake and misunderstanding. He admitted that he had underestimated her and acknowledged that she was an outstanding journalist. However, Ruan Qingxia didn’t hear any of this.
The next day, Ruan Qingxia wanted to explain what happened the previous night, but Shu Wenbo received word that someone had found Granny Zhang’s husband. The two of them quickly brought Granny Zhang to Mingyue Village to reunite with him. Watching the couple reunite moved Ruan Qingxia deeply. After helping settle the elderly couple, she found Shu Wenbo and asked what he had said the previous night. Shu Wenbo repeated everything, and Ruan Qingxia forgave him.
Suddenly, heavy rain began pouring over the disaster zone, causing a high-level barrier lake to form. The water level continued to rise and, if the dam broke, over a dozen villages and a road leading to the epicenter would be submerged. Water conservancy experts suggested controlled blasting to divert the water into Qipan River via Niutou Mountain—minimizing loss. Since Xinguan Village was in the flood release zone, rescue teams needed to evacuate to areas above 2,500 meters in Nanyang Town.
Upon receiving the news, Xing Kelei immediately notified Shao Yuhan, who was still performing surgery. If they evacuated immediately, the patient would certainly die. Shao Yuhan requested 90 minutes to finish the operation. Xing Kelei contacted the command center, asking to delay the flood release, but the water level was rising faster than expected. Thankfully, Shao Yuhan’s team completed the surgery and evacuated in time. Miners at Pingxiang Mine had been trapped for days.
Xing Kelei planned to inspect the situation, and Mi Ka requested to join him. Shao Yuhan approved and reminded Xing Kelei to take good care of Mi Ka. While they headed to the mine, Shao Yuhan returned to base camp, where Xing Keyao approached him to talk. But with another patient needing surgery, he left in a hurry.
