The Justice Episode 6 Recap
> The Justice Recap
Cheng Yizhi visited Huang Ruhong, who instructed him to treat Wu Lizi well. Huang Ruhong then assigned Cheng Yizhi a crucial task: to secure his appointment as a Chinese director in the French Concession Municipal Council, a goal Leizi had failed to achieve. Cheng Yizhi pledged to do his utmost to complete the mission. Meanwhile, Wu Lizi accompanied Liao Lan shopping. Wu Lizi felt that Liao Lan was wary of her.
Upon returning home, Wu Lizi indirectly questioned Cheng Yizhi about Huang Ruhong's stance on their marriage. She disclosed that Liao Lan had given her a "fertility wine" before their wedding, which led to her getting drunk and missing their wedding night, causing her discomfort for several days afterward. Cheng Yizhi was not upset, instead, he comforted her, stating that they could wait until they knew each other better.
Wu Lizi later asked Charlie about the relationship between Cheng Yizhi and Huang Ruhong. Charlie confirmed that Cheng Yizhi had not known Huang Ruhong previously; he gained Huang Ruhong's appreciation and was promoted to bank manager only after exposing an embezzlement scheme involving the manager and assistant manager of the Jing'an Branch of Longying Private Bank. Despite this, Wu Lizi still suspected Huang Ruhong of involvement in her father's death.
However, Charlie had investigated and found no connection between Huang Ruhong and her father or the banking industry, concluding that her suspicions were ill-founded. Charlie then presented Wu Lizi with a wedding gift. Cheng Yizhi learned that Jin Yishan, a Chinese director with voting rights, wished to build a sanatorium. Disguised as "Mr. Zhao" from the Tongzhou Charitable Foundation, Cheng Yizhi visited Jin Yishan's Foundling Hospital.
Ms. Ding, the managing director, gave him a tour, proudly displaying photos of Jin Yishan with the children. Cheng Yizhi, observing that Jin Yishan wore a different expensive watch in each photograph, deduced that Jin Yishan had a passion for collecting fine watches. Separately, Liao Lan deliberately took Wu Lizi to the Atlantic Club, a casino. Wu Lizi became visibly uncomfortable, stating her dislike for such places and her fear of being recognized due to past gambling debts.
She insisted on going to a department store instead, prompting Liao Lan to notice her apprehension. Cheng Yizhi then acquired a rare Angelus split-seconds pocket watch, which he knew Jin Yishan desired. He presented it to Jin Yishan, who immediately recognized Cheng Yizhi's intention to secure Huang Ruhong's appointment as a Chinese director. Jin Yishan bluntly refused, declaring his strong personal dislike for Huang Ruhong and making it clear he would never facilitate Huang Ruhong's entry into the municipal council.
Later, Wu Lizi surprised Cheng Yizhi by picking him up from the bank. He took her to the Lujue Dance Hall, which had once been owned by Jin Yishan. Cheng Yizhi claimed he wanted to dance, and Wu Lizi, realizing he couldn't, taught him the steps. She noticed his interest in the hall's condition and deduced he was conducting a "secret investigation."
She recalled that Jin Yishan had built the dance hall for his wife, who loved dancing but had ceased to appear in public after suffering leg problems following the birth of their second son. Meanwhile, Cheng Yizhi’s subordinate, Heart-shaped Face, reported that Jin Yishan led a simple life, free of vices, and frequently visited the Foundling Hospital every Friday. Cheng Yizhi, connecting this to the information about Jin Yishan's wife, requested further investigation into her health.
Cheng Yizhi returned to the Foundling Hospital, again posing as "Mr. Zhao" from the Tongzhou Charitable Foundation, claiming a meeting with Jin Yishan had been arranged. After a brief conversation with Ms. Ding, he subtly followed her to the backyard, where he observed Jin Yishan instructing Aunt Liu, a maid, to care for his wife. Cheng Yizhi then followed Aunt Liu to a small, secluded room and deduced that the deranged woman confined within was Jin Yishan's mentally ill wife.
At home, Liao Lan visited Wu Lizi and praised her for keeping such a tidy house. Wu Lizi, feeling melancholic, reminisced about her carefree past and the joy of receiving dim sum from her father. She confessed that after her father's "misfortune," people's attitudes shifted, and she was forced to work as a bar hostess out of desperation.
She tearfully apologized to Liao Lan for lying about not having been to clubs before, explaining her reluctance to enter the Atlantic Club was due to fear of being recognized and reliving painful memories. Liao Lan, touched by Wu Lizi’s honesty, apologized for her previous guarded behavior and promised to treat her as family. Later, Cheng Yizhi made another visit, posing as "Xiao Fan," a distant relative sent by Jin Yishan to help Aunt Liu with errands.
While there, he feigned stomach discomfort and asked to use a toilet near the secluded room. He then heard a woman screaming from inside. Aunt Liu quickly pushed him out and locked the door. Equipped with this new knowledge, Cheng Yizhi confronted Jin Yishan. He revealed his knowledge of Jin Yishan's past conflict with Huang Ruhong over land for the Lujue Dance Hall, which Jin Yishan believed caused him significant financial losses and fueled his animosity towards Huang Ruhong.
Cheng Yizhi then exposed Jin Yishan’s deeper secret: his wife's mental illness following childbirth and her confinement to a small room, cared for solely by Aunt Liu, with her own children never having met her. Cheng Yizhi pointed out the hypocrisy of Jin Yishan’s public philanthropy while isolating his wife, warning that this secret could damage his reputation and charitable endeavors. Jin Yishan, angered, accused Cheng Yizhi of being no different from Leizi, using intimidation tactics.
Cheng Yizhi denied coercion, asserting he understood Jin Yishan's "helpless misery" and deep love for his wife, which compelled him to lead a "fragmented and contradictory life" due to her "insanity." He advised Jin Yishan to publicly disclose his wife's tragedy before breaking ground on the sanatorium, turning a personal sorrow into a source of public understanding and allowing him to live without the burden of a hidden secret.
Despite appreciating Cheng Yizhi's understanding, Jin Yishan still refused to recommend Huang Ruhong for the directorship. At that moment, Jin Yishan received a frantic phone call from Aunt Liu, who reported that Leizi and his men had taken Jin Yishan’s wife hostage, forcing her to make the call. Leizi, speaking through Aunt Liu, demanded Jin Yishan stop obstructing Huang Ruhong’s appointment.
Enraged, Jin Yishan vowed he would resign his directorship rather than yield to the coercion, expressing profound disappointment in Cheng Yizhi, whom he now saw as a mere tool of Huang Ruhong, just like Leizi. Leizi, proud of his "success," returned to Huang Ruhong to boast, mocking Cheng Yizhi in the process. Huang Ruhong instructed Leizi to collect his reward from Liao Lan, while Cheng Yizhi silently disapproved of Leizi's ruthless methods.
