Shooting Stars Recap
Episode 1 Recap
In 1936, China was under the Kuomintang's White Terror, plagued by internal and external troubles, and the situation was rapidly changing. Under the luxuriant sycamore trees in Nanjing, a car slowly drove up. Sitting in the car was Hua Zhen, in the prime of his youth, handsome and charming. He was currently studying in the second term of the Navigation Department at Jiangyin Electrical Engineering School. Today he had come home specifically to attend his father's fiftieth birthday.
In another month, he would graduate and board a ship to begin his internship. This time, his father had sent him a special telegram asking him to make sure he came home. Hua Zhen's father was Hua Zhuoqin, the Vice Minister and Lieutenant General of the Ministry of Military Administration, and his elder brother Hua Liang was the secretary of the Second Office of the Attendant's Office.
Many guests had come to the house, and Hua Zhen understood that many of them were here because of his father's reputation in the military. When he saw his father, he was as stern as ever. When his father heard that Hua Zhen hadn't greeted the guests, he asked his elder brother to take him to do so. Hua Zhen had no interest in officialdom and did not plan to go into business or politics.
He was preparing to continue his advanced studies at the Electrical Engineering School or work more in the navy. To his surprise, his father did not object when he heard his decision. The living room was packed with guests, and the music and dancing were jarring. Hua Zhen disliked such a noisy environment, so he hid in the study nearby to eat quietly. His brother Gao Shunping asked him about his future plans.
Hua Zhen couldn't help but talk about the current situation in China that he had recently learned about. He said the war of resistance against Japan would be a long-term affair, and he no longer held hope for the Kuomintang. His brother Hua Liang was already impatient and immediately warned him not to discuss political matters at home.
As soon as Deng Mingyuan, a comrade from the underground Communist Party of China, got off the train from Shanghai to Nanjing, he was tracked by Kuomintang agents. In a panic, he thought of Hua Zhuoqin, who held important positions within the party, and perhaps he could seek refuge with him. Deng Mingyuan also had an important piece of intelligence that needed to be handed over to a contact person as soon as possible.
Hurriedly entering Hua Zhuoqin's mansion, Deng Mingyuan met Hua Zhen. Seeing that the enemies would soon catch up, Deng Mingyuan handed the book containing important information to Hua Zhen and told him the address where he needed to go. Soon after, he was taken away by the Han traitor Wei Daiqing. Deng Mingyuan was imprisoned at the Shanghai-Wusong Garrison Headquarters. Hua Zhen then took a train to Shanghai as instructed by Deng Mingyuan.
He also had to deliver this book to a person surnamed Meng. Before the appointed time arrived, Hua Zhen had tea near the meeting place. He casually noticed someone climbing on the exterior of the building opposite. People eating by the street stalls seemed unperturbed, saying that the residents living opposite often climbed in and out through the windows on the building's exterior. As soon as Hua Zhen walked into the building, he noticed something unusual.
The little girl, who was probably about six or seven years old and had entered the building with him just moments ago, was in a panic, and the string of sugar candies in her hand dropped to the ground. Hua Zhen took a step forward and saw someone pointing a gun at the little girl. The situation was critical. Hua Zhen alertly pulled the little girl to the side and then quickly hid in a nearby room.
Hua Zhen understood that something unexpected had happened. Soon, police arrived in the hallway. Hua Zhen quickly took the little girl and left the building. According to what the little girl told him, the Mr. Meng that Hua Zhen was looking for was her father. Just moments ago, while she had run out to buy sugar candies, her parents and several guests had been shot dead, and the killer was also wearing a police uniform.
Hua Zhen took the little girl to eat. The more he thought about it, the more he felt something was wrong. After repeatedly examining the book, he finally discovered the secret. He used a small knife to cut open the flyleaf of the book, and inside were several forged documents, including one for the little girl.
It turned out that what his teacher Deng Mingyuan had urgently asked Hua Zhen to deliver were several sets of identity documents for people in disguise who needed to be relocated. Unfortunately, Hua Zhen was a step too late; otherwise, the tragedy that just occurred would not have happened. When the girl saw other children around with their parents, her face was full of tears, and she asked Hua Zhen if he could take her with him too.
Hua Zhen hesitated. He knew that taking this little girl with him would be very dangerous, so he asked the girl if she knew anyone else here to whom he could take her, like a relative.
Episode 2 Recap
When Hua Zhen was rescuing the little girl from danger just now, he encountered a young police officer. This young police officer was Chen Hao, the captain of the police station of the Shanghai Municipal Sixteenth Branch Bureau. Besides the little girl, he was the first person to see the scene of Mr. Meng's murder. At that time, he noticed the little girl was missing, pulled the cordon, and tried hard to find her, but unfortunately didn't find her.
After finishing his work in the morning, he immediately changed into civilian clothes to find Deng Mingyuan. He saw Wei Daiqing at Deng Mingyuan's residence, heard a gunshot, and then saw many people throwing the books Deng Mingyuan often read onto the ground. Chen Hao knew his teacher had been killed. That night, Chen Hao recalled the moments of his acquaintance with his teacher. He was very sad.
His teacher had always worked diligently for the cause of the Communist Party of China, exhausting himself for the liberation of all Chinese people. He didn't expect him to sacrifice so quickly. Chen Hao was deeply moved. He would continue to stick to his post.
Although he was a young police officer during the day, he was also an undercover agent in private, ready to complete the tasks assigned by his superiors at any time and waiting for a new liaison to arrive. That night, Hua Zhen also tossed and turned, unable to sleep. He booked a room in a hotel, settled the little girl, and then called home, asking his elder brother to investigate the situation regarding his teacher.
Before going to bed, he went to the little girl's room and found photos of her parents on her bed. She was also a child of misfortune. Hua Zhen quietly covered the little girl with his own blanket. The next morning, the little girl went to the hotel front desk herself to make a call. Hua Zhen thought she must be finding a place to stay for herself.
To his surprise, the little girl looked up the phone book, contacted all her classmates, and went to their homes one by one to borrow money, borrowing a total of more than twenty yuan. The night before, the little girl had specifically asked Hua Zhen how much his usual monthly salary was.
It turned out she wanted to borrow money to hire Hua Zhen, hoping he could stay in Shanghai for a few more days to help her find the murderer of her parents. The girl's name was Meng Duo Ci. Hua Zhen sympathized with the little girl's plight. Originally, he wanted to take her to Nanjing.
When he called home, his elder brother told him that Deng Mingyuan, who had come to their house the day before yesterday, was actually a member of the Communist Party of China, and asked Hua Zhen not to get involved in anything concerning Deng Mingyuan anymore. Taking anyone associated with him home would bring disaster upon their family.
Hua Zhen hesitated for a while, knowing deeply that it was a period of White Terror and anything related to the Communist Party of China would be very complicated. Hua Zhen paid enough fees to the hotel so that she could live there safely, have a place to sleep, and eat directly at the hotel every day. Just as Hua Zhen was preparing to leave by car, he repeatedly stroked the book his teacher had left him.
Deng Mingyuan was a very respectable teacher. He had not expected his teacher to be a member of the Communist Party of China. Hua Zhen felt that there must be a reason for his teacher's choice. China was now facing internal and external troubles, and the Kuomintang had not united against foreign enemies, but instead adopted the policy of "suppressing internal unrest before resisting external aggression" and launched a large-scale crackdown on communists, which indeed puzzled him greatly.
Subconsciously, Hua Zhen had already made a decision. He immediately returned to the hotel and took Meng Duo Ci with him. Fortunately, Meng Duo Ci returned in time. The spy who killed Meng Duo Ci's family that day finally found this hotel with photos. Meng Duo Ci was having dinner downstairs just as the spy was going upstairs to look for the room number. She saw that familiar shadow and recognized the murderer.
Being smart, she hid in other rooms in the hotel and finally escaped a crisis. Hua Zhen found Meng Duo Ci and took her to find a new place to hide. This time he found a guesthouse. Hua Zhen, who had learned reconnaissance knowledge, carefully observed the surroundings and confirmed it was safe before bringing Meng Duo Ci to stay there. For safety, he also changed names for Meng Duo Ci and himself.
Now his name was Xiang Yuansheng, while Meng Duo Ci's name was changed to Qiu Shi. Externally, he instructed Meng Duo Ci to call him older brother.
Episode 3 Recap
Hua Zhen had classmates in Shanghai. His classmates told him that the police department was just recruiting new police officers. Hua Zhen took this opportunity to take the exam. With his excellent ability, Hua Zhen scored 100 points in the first two subjects. The examiner was very optimistic about him and said that if he performed normally in the third subject with this level of ability, he would be able to enter the General Bureau.
Hua Zhen's heart skipped a beat. He was going to be a police officer at the Fourth Branch Bureau now, and if he entered the General Bureau, he would not achieve his goal. For the third exam, Hua Zhen decisively did not enter the exam room. In the evening, he called his elder brother, hoping his brother could use his connections to help one of his "classmates" enter the Fourth Branch Bureau.
With his brother's capability, it would be easy to help Hua Zhen's "classmate" enter the General Bureau, or even a better place, but Hua Zhen insisted on entering the Fourth Branch Bureau, and he finally got his wish! Also admitted to the Fourth Bureau at the same time as Hua Zhen was Luo Minmin. She had taken the exam for three consecutive years and finally succeeded in the third year.
A total of 98 positions were open, and Luo Minmin ranked 98th. Her sister teased her for not scoring a single point more than necessary. Her father worried that once his daughter joined the police department, it would be dangerous if there was a war in the future, but Luo Minmin wasn't concerned about this. Joining the police department was her dream. Having finally passed, she felt incredibly lucky.
On the first day reporting as a new recruit, Hua Zhen met Zuo Ronghua, the police station director of the Fourth Bureau. He also met Sun Hongfa and Tian Dongbao. Sun Hongfa's father owned a restaurant, and on the first day of reporting, he introduced his background to his colleagues, having a simple mind. Tian Dongbao's family were farmers who raised chickens. Luo Minmin, on the other hand, was naive and innocent, like a blank sheet of paper.
When she heard that Zuo Ronghua arranged for her not to go out on calls and only do light tasks like serving tea and water, she was unhappy and actively requested to go out on calls like everyone else. Zuo Ronghua knew that Hua Zhen had gotten in through connections. On the very first day, he told Chen Hao that this was the person who used connections and squeezed out the spot for their fellow Officer Bai's brother.
Therefore, Hua Zhen's arrival greatly disgusted Old Bai. Because of him, his brother did not get into the police department, so he always caused trouble for Hua Zhen. The first time Hua Zhen saw Chen Hao, his heart sank. On the day Meng Duo Ci's parents were murdered, the only police officer he saw was Chen Hao. He didn't know if he was the murderer Meng Duo Ci mentioned. The moment they looked at each other, their expressions changed drastically.
Neither knew the other's background. Chen Hao was even more surprised when he heard Hua Zhen's name. He had given the identification document for "Xiang Yuansheng" to his teacher. At that time, his teacher wanted to find some identities to help several comrades relocate, and Xiang Yuansheng was one of them. His teacher also said the document would only be used for a month and would be destroyed upon expiration. Chen Hao held a big secret in his heart.
After getting off work, he immediately returned to the hotel where Meng Duo Ci's parents were murdered to investigate Hua Zhen's background, but the hotel did not have any record of a person named "Xiang Yuansheng". Chen Hao recalled the scene when he handed those documents to his teacher. What was Hua Zhen's background? It was clear that Hua Zhen had been present at the murder scene that day. Was he a friend or foe?
Chen Hao had to find out as soon as possible in the future. Hua Zhen accessed the police dispatch records for the past few days and found that Chen Hao was the officer dispatched for several consecutive cases. Determined to investigate the truth of that day's murder case, Hua Zhen used his position to quickly return to the archive room and began searching for the case files.
While sifting through the files in the archive room, Hua Zhen indeed made a new discovery. That day, he also saw someone escape by climbing over a balcony. It turned out to be related to a case of harassing women. Therefore, the reason this person climbed over the wall and escaped that day was very likely because he saw some truth. On her first day working at the police department, Luo Minmin encountered a case.
The person involved saw she was a female police officer and didn't take her seriously at all. Luo Minmin was put in a very embarrassing situation. Fortunately, Hua Zhen was there. He twisted the "flower thief's" arm, and the person immediately raised his hands in surrender, swearing never to act presumptuously again. Luo Minmin felt her ability to handle matters was truly insufficient.
Wanting to please her teammate Hua Zhen, she specifically sat with Hua Zhen during dinner and even eagerly added food to his plate. But Hua Zhen was impatient with her chattiness and told her to find a different teammate as soon as possible.
Episode 4 Recap
Wei Daiqing was single-mindedly focused on achieving merits and getting promoted. He arrested Deng Mingyuan at Hua Zhen's house, and fearing there might be remaining members of the underground party, he investigated the situation of Hua Zhen's family members. The only suspicious point was Hua Zhen, who went to Shanghai three days after Deng Mingyuan was arrested and had not yet returned. This greatly piqued Wei Daiqing's interest.
He questioned Deng Mingyuan again about Hua Zhen, but Dengé“远 had previously investigated Wei Daiqing as well, knew Wei Daiqing's original name, and found a weakness in Wei Daiqing. Wei Daiqing did not investigate further. Luo Minmin returned home after her first day of work and saw everything in disarray. A group of thugs had come to cause trouble at her home again.
After Luo Minmin helped her brother clean up the house, she comforted him, saying that in a few days, she would have the police officers from her Fourth Branch Bureau come to their house to take pictures. This way, those thugs would not dare to come and cause trouble again. After Hua Zhen returned home and finished eating, he told Meng Duo Ci about some of the information he had investigated during the day.
Meng Duo Ci was very grateful that Hua Zhen could help her investigate the case and was also very satisfied with the slightly oversized clothes Hua Zhen had bought for her. Luo Minmin came to work and found there was no ladies' changing room. Her teammates changing clothes without reservation made Luo Minmin tremble with fear.
She originally wanted to apply to the leader for a ladies' changing room, but upon hearing that it would affect a month's salary, she immediately withdrew her application. The police department held a regular meeting. The Fourth Branch Bureau was still the least favored character. Zuo Ronghua didn't strive for advancement and had no connections above, so even though he had become an "old-timer" in the police department, there was no hope of promotion.
He would serve tea and water for everyone every time, but he didn't even have a stool to sit on. This time, the police department asked the Fourth Branch Bureau about the Wen Hua Hotel incident. Zuo Ronghua was not very clear about it. Chen Hao reported the several clues he had investigated, but the big leader intercepted them.
By the end of the meeting, the big leader decided to transfer the case of the Meng Duo Ci family massacre to the city bureau. Originally, for Zuo Ronghua, the fewer difficult cases, the better. Hearing that the case was to be transferred to the city bureau, he immediately organized the case files, erased the case code, and told the police officers to concentrate their efforts on solving the next case.
Hua Zhen's Fourth Branch Bureau got a clue that someone saw a kidnapper near a hotel. Because of this, the team members were both excited and nervous; this was their first mission. Chen Hao assigned tasks to several team members, telling them to apprehend the suspect in plain clothes.
Originally, new police officers were not required to go out on duty, but this kidnapper was the person Hua Zhen desperately wanted to catch; he was the one who escaped by climbing over the hotel's exterior wall that day. Hua Zhen volunteered to go out on duty. This caused great dissatisfaction from Bai Shoujun, who called Hua Zhen overestimating his capabilities.
However, Hua Zhen immediately made a solemn pledge on the spot: if he couldn't catch that kidnapper this time, he would never go out on duty to perform missions again. Chen Hao was surprised by Hua Zhen's initiative to volunteer for duty. It seemed Hua Zhen was eager to investigate something. Luo Minmin was very nervous during her first time going out on duty due to lack of experience.
To find the best observation angle, Hua Zhen went to a coffee shop nearby. The prices there were high, but Luo Minmin still took out all the money in her pocket and bought a cup of coffee for Hua Zhen. Seeing Luo Minmin's nervous expression, Hua Zhen told her to relax a little and then treated her to a piece of chocolate cake. It was the first time Hua Zhen had seen a cake.
Before he even picked up his chopsticks, he heard a commotion outside. Before he could figure out what was happening, he rushed out. This time, other team members had apprehended the wrong person. Seeing that the suspect was about to escape, Hua Zhen quickly chased after him. To apprehend the kidnapper, Hua Zhen rushed into the French Concession. Chinese police were not allowed to enter the French Concession, but Hua Zhen disregarded these rules.
After arresting the kidnapper, the French Concession police quickly came to demand an explanation. The person who came to reprimand Chen Hao was Shi Junyu, an Inspector from the Public Concession Police Department's Inspectorate. She demanded that Chen Hao release the kidnapper and arrest Hua Zhen to face charges. But Chen Hao immediately blocked her, claiming that the gate to the French Concession had not yet been repaired, and this transitional area did not yet belong to the French Concession.
After Chen Hao's reasoned argument, the other party finally made concessions. Chen Hao returned with Hua Zhen, a few team members, and the apprehended kidnapper. On the way back, he reprimanded Hua Zhen for acting rashly and asked him what his true purpose was for painstakingly coming to the Fourth Branch Bureau.
Episode 5 Recap
Hua Zhen did not tell Chen Hao the truth about disguising himself to infiltrate the police station, but Chen Hao's efforts to save him in the French Concession earned Hua Zhen's trust. Next came the interrogation, and Chen Hao actively applied to participate. During the interrogation, the kidnapper downplayed his actions, only confessing to kidnapping women. When Hua Zhen questioned him about whether he had been to the Wen Hua Hotel that day, the kidnapper's expression changed drastically.
At first, he denied it, but as Hua Zhen pressed further, the kidnapper, seeing that he couldn't hide it, began to confess. Chen Hao was very surprised; he had also been following the Wen Hua case but didn't know there was another eyewitness. Chen Hao called Hua Zhen out and asked him what else he was hiding.
After confirming that he had indeed seen this kidnapper climbing the balcony that day, Chen Hao became highly cautious and had the kidnapper draw a picture of the murderer's appearance. Just as Chen Hao was about to start drawing, the voices of other police officers came from outside. Because of a warning from the French Concession authorities, the city police department was going to take the kidnapper away.
This matter had a terrible impact, and the French Concession authorities were currently powerful, and no one could afford to offend them. Hua Zhen, having just obtained a clue, was about to have it snatched away. He immediately asked where they were taking the kidnapper. The other party, hearing Hua Zhen's tone, initially wanted to teach him a lesson.
Upon hearing that Hua Zhen had gotten in through connections, he impatiently replied that they were taking the kidnapper to the French Concession authorities. The kidnapper was taken away by the police from the Sixteenth Bureau. That night, they drove the kidnapper to the wilderness and shot him dead.
The next day, Chen Hao first went to the French Concession, hoping to persuade Shi Junyu to release the kidnapper so they could continue investigating the case, but Shi Junyu was not interested in Chen Hao's arrival. Seeing his unfriendly attitude, she didn't respond with a pleasant expression. Just as Chen Hao left Shi Junyu's office, Hua Zhen went in.
He calmly negotiated with Shi Junyu, and upon hearing that the French Concession authorities were also investigating the Wen Hua Hotel case, Hua Zhen offered that he had clues and hoped the French Concession authorities could release the person and let him continue investigating the case. Hua Zhen's negotiation approach was based on cooperation and mutual benefit. Shi Junyu stood up to pour tea, while carefully observing Hua Zhen.
After Hua Zhen left, Shi Junyu asked her colleagues whose idea it was to transfer the kidnapper from the Fourth Bureau. Upon hearing that it wasn't the French Concession authorities involved, but an internal police department order, Shi Junyu understood that there must be a problem. Chen Hao, who had already reached the stairwell, still wanted to go back and persuade Shi Junyu because he was unwilling to be rejected.
He happened to see Hua Zhen walking into the office, so he hid quietly and listened to the conversation between Hua Zhen and Shi Junyu. On the way home, Hua Zhen first noticed Chen Hao following him, reminding Chen Hao not to interfere with his personal space during off-duty hours, and then unceremoniously left.
Yesterday, he received a notice that the current police team was in the process of being disbanded, so Hua Zhen and Chen Hao were not currently in a superior-subordinate relationship. Chen Hao felt that this person was becoming more and more mysterious. Hua Zhen brought bread to Meng Duo Ci. Just two minutes after arriving home, there was a knock on the door. Hua Zhen opened the door and found it was Shi Junyu.
Meng Duo Ci ran out upon hearing Shi Junyu's voice, calling Shi Junyu "Teacher Meng". Shi Junyu hoped to talk to Meng Duo Ci, and Hua Zhen, seeing that the two seemed to have a close relationship, agreed. Meng Duo Ci told Shi Junyu the whole process of Hua Zhen helping her, and also mentioned Hua Zhen changing his false identity.
Episode 6 Recap
Shi Junyu wanted to take Meng Duo Ci away and also asked who gave him the book. Hua Zhen was temporarily unclear whether Shi Junyu was friend or foe. The other party first said she was Mr. Meng's friend and Meng Duo Ci's German teacher, and now she was interested in who gave him this book. Hua Zhen was very wary of this and did not mention Deng Mingyuan's name.
He also proposed that Meng Duo Ci hired him for a month to find the murderer, and he could not leave Shanghai before the month was up. As for whether to let Meng Duo Ci go with her, he would let the child choose for herself. Meng Duo Ci also wanted to find the murderer of her parents, so she temporarily stayed.
When Shi Junyu left, she instructed her assistant to rent a house nearby and protect Meng Duo Ci well. Meng Duo Ci hadn't had her hair braided for a long time, and Hua Zhen didn't know how to braid hair, so he took her to find Luo Minmin. Luo Minmin had just washed her hair at home and was dressed casually. Hearing someone knocking, she carelessly opened the door.
Seeing it was Hua Zhen, she instinctively closed the door in fright. After composing herself, Luo Minmin opened the door again, and hearing Hua Zhen's purpose, she agreed to braid Meng Duo Ci's hair. At Luo Minmin's home, Hua Zhen met her sister and her brother Luo Tianxiang. Because Luo Minmin used the shampoo her sister made, the two started messing with each other. Hua Zhen had never seen a family like this, messy but quite harmonious.
After teaching Meng Duo Ci how to braid her hair, Hua Zhen was about to get up and leave. Meng Duo Ci smelled the aroma of food and, hearing Luo Minmin's invitation, she happily agreed to stay for dinner. The meal was very lively. Because of a small issue, Luo Minmin and her sister started arguing loudly again. Hua Zhen saw such a family atmosphere for the first time, but he finished dinner happily.
After returning home from dinner, Meng Duo Ci was very happy, saying she liked this sister very much and asked Hua Zhen if he liked her too. It had been a long time since Hua Zhen had seen Meng Duo Ci's smiling face, so he told her to rest quickly. Wei Daiqing found the underground party traitor and showed him a photo of Hua Zhen, but the underground party traitor did not recognize Hua Zhen.
He confessed that Deng Mingyuan's mission to Shanghai was just to protect someone surnamed Meng. Besides Deng Mingyuan, the organization also left one person to protect the Meng family's youngest daughter. Hearing that there was still someone who escaped, Wei Daiqing immediately launched an investigation. Not long after, he learned that another German teacher was in contact with Meng Duo Ci, currently working at the French Concession Authority. This person's name was Shi Junyu!
Shi Junyu, like Deng Mingyuan, was also a member of the underground party. She used to be a radio operator. Since the organization in Shanghai was destroyed, she was forced to appear in public and act. While using her position to transmit messages to the outside world, she also repaired the damaged radio transmitter, waiting for the organization to assign her a mission.
One day, Shi Junyu received a call at the French Concession Authority, learning the location of the underground party traitor. She immediately used her position to go and arrest him. She put the traitor in the trunk of her vehicle and was preparing to transfer him when Wei Daiqing arrived. Shi Junyu refused to discuss work matters with Wei Daiqing and was about to drive away when a sound suddenly came from the trunk. Wei Daiqing became highly vigilant and pressed her about the sound from the trunk.
Episode 7 Recap
Shi Junyu heard movement in the car's trunk. She calmly walked towards the flower shop ahead, wanting to draw Wei Daiqing away. Since it was their first meeting, Wei Daiqing couldn't be aggressive or reckless. He took out Hua Zhen's photo and asked Shi Junyu if she had seen this person. Shi Junyu already knew about the teacher-student relationship between Hua Zhen and Deng Mingyuan, so she calmly stated that she did not recognize this person.
Just as she was buying flowers, a large truck drove near Shi Junyu's vehicle. Before long, the truck drove away. Wei Daiqing had been closely monitoring the truck's movements. Seeing the truck drive away, he immediately ran to Shi Junyu's vehicle and opened the trunk. There was nothing inside. Wei Daiqing masked his surprised expression and claimed he admired ladies who sprayed perfume in the trunk. Shi Junyu drove away directly.
That evening, Wei Daiqing returned home and also hung Shi Junyu's photo on the suspect wall. Luo Minmin's older brother Luo Tianxiang received a notification from above at his workplace during the day. They distributed a photo to everyone, asking them to look for a little girl when they had time, and that a heavy reward would be given if she was found. Luo Tianxiang was secretly surprised when he saw the photo.
Not long ago, he had seen this girl, and she was brought back by his sister's colleague. Luo Tianxiang remembered the girl's appearance. Without understanding the secret behind it, he did not tell his boss what he knew. Meng Duo Ci saw in the newspaper that someone would hold a memorial service for her parents near the Wenhua Hotel. She very much wanted to attend.
Although she knew it was very dangerous, Hua Zhen was also thinking of returning to the Wenhua Hotel again to see what the suspect was looking for at that time, so he quietly took Meng Duo Ci back. Hua Zhen carefully observed the room's furnishings, trying to find some useful clues. In a wooden box, Hua Zhen found a stack of HSBC bank drafts.
Meng Duo Ci said her parents had rented a safety deposit box at HSBC but she did not know where the key was. When Hua Zhen was leaving with Meng Duo Ci, he discovered a suspect. The person had been closely observing everyone at the memorial service. Hua Zhen immediately fled with Meng Duo Ci. After hiding the child in a safe place, Hua Zhen drew the suspect away. During their struggle, Hua Zhen's former classmate saw them.
Luckily, he drove over in time and scared off the suspect. This classmate of Hua Zhen held an important position within the KMT, and was a colleague of Wei Daiqing. Wei Daiqing had even inquired about the relationship between Hua Zhen and his naval academy teacher from this person. However, this classmate had a close relationship with Hua Zhen and quickly dismissed Wei Daiqing.
But hearing Wei Daiqing say that Hua Zhen had not yet returned to Nanjing, it seemed Hua Zhen had lied to him, and he still had some doubts in his mind. The punishment for the Fourth Team was canceled, and everyone was very happy. Chen Hao immediately called the Sixteenth Precinct, hoping to bring the kidnapper back, but the people at the Sixteenth Precinct said the suspect had disappeared. With the lead broken, Chen Hao did not sit idle.
He quietly went to the Sixteenth Precinct during the day, hid until night, and ran to the archives, hoping to find new clues from the case files again. When he saw "Case Closed" written on it, he was very surprised. How could the case be closed so quickly? Hua Zhen was injured in the struggle with the suspect. The opponent had very good skills and every knife thrust was lethal.
Hua Zhen guessed that the opponent had been looking for Meng Duo Ci, perhaps she had something he wanted. When he had time, Hua Zhen went to HSBC. He heard the person in charge say that only immediate family members could view that safety deposit box.
Episode 8 Recap
Chen Hao was rummaging through files in the archives. As a result, he was locked in the room by a patrolling police officer at night. Chen Hao persisted through the night, finally sneaking out quietly in the early morning while the cleaners were tidying up. During his escape, he ran right into Section Chief Feng Guangyun of the Sixteenth Precinct. Feng Guangyun had always delayed his work and taken credit for their achievements.
Such a major case as the Wenhua Hotel one hadn't even been thoroughly investigated, yet it was hastily closed. There must be something fishy going on. This Section Chief Feng Guangyun looked down on him greatly. His subordinate even kicked Chen Hao directly, but he didn't rebuke him. Hua Zhen realized the seriousness of this case. The people in the Fourth Team came to the police station just to make a living.
If he investigated this case privately, it would likely endanger every colleague here. Thinking of this, Hua Zhen couldn't implicate his Fourth Team colleagues, so he wrote his resignation letter and handed it to Chen Hao first thing the next morning. In the morning, Chen Hao saw the missing person notice in the newspaper. He thought he had found a clue, so he quickly told Hua Zhen the news.
Hearing that Hua Zhen was going to resign, he was very confused. Hua Zhen explained his original intention. Chen Hao still wanted to persuade him to stay and investigate the case, using words to try and keep him. Hua Zhen didn't want to waste time here, so he said that he didn't see everyone here as his partner. Outside the door, Luo Minmin also heard Hua Zhen's words and thus misunderstood deeply.
Hua Zhen left the police station and ran into Luo Minmin's father Luo Zhongning and younger sister Luo Qinqin. They invited Hua Zhen and Meng Duo Ci to have dinner together. Hua Zhen's classmate Hua Liang, after saving Hua Zhen last time, saw that he was using a false identity and working in a small police station.
He quickly found out his work location and came looking for him, just in time to see someone inviting Hua Zhen home to eat fish. Hua Liang jokingly asked Hua Zhen what his purpose was for staying here. Hua Zhen told him he would explain everything in half a month. Meng Duo Ci was tutoring at Luo Minmin's home. She accidentally wrote down her real name. Thinking that the people here didn't know her, she immediately erased the original name.
Meng Duo Ci and Hua Zhen stayed for dinner. Luo Minmin's father Luo Zhongning even spoke highly of Hua Zhen, hoping he could look after his daughter. Hearing that Hua Zhen had already submitted his resignation at the police station, the old man was very surprised. After Hua Zhen and Meng Duo Ci left, Luo Minmin found something strange on the test paper. She saw that the name originally written was "Meng Duo Ci".
She looked through old newspapers and finally understood that the little girl who came to her house for dinner today was the only daughter of the parents who were murdered and went missing at the Wenhua Hotel not long ago.
Connecting this to Hua Zhen's performance at the police station these past few days and the strange things he said, Luo Minmin confirmed her suspicion – Hua Zhen was indeed investigating the truth behind the murder case of the Meng couple. Luo Tianxiang was being chased for debt by a group of thugs. The other party forced him to pay back the debt within these two days.
Luo Tianxiang had found a coachman to take Hua Zhen and Meng Duo Ci home during the day, so he naturally knew their address. Furthermore, with the debt collectors coming to his door, if he could reveal their address, he would get a reward of one hundred yuan. Luo Tianxiang was truly tempted. Wei Daiqing was determined to climb the social ladder. Hearing that the Chief of Staff was dining in their area, he immediately went to escort him.
It was pouring rain, but he still refused to use an umbrella. Secretary-General Guo noticed Wei Daiqing without an umbrella and praised him as a "pillar" in the National Revolutionary Army team. An attendant on the side, along with Hua Liang, heard Wei Daiqing's fawning words and wore expressions of disdain. Given his deep friendship with Hua Zhen, Hua Liang inquired with his superior about the purpose of Secretary-General Guo's visit this time.
His superior told him it was merely a struggle between tigers and wolves. This Secretary-General Guo had always been a notorious shady figure in the KMT-controlled areas, and this time, he was even more focused on achieving results. Indeed, Secretary-General Guo specifically instructed Wei Daiqing. He knew that Wei Daiqing had gone to Hua Zhuoqian and arrested a communist. He had already coveted the power in Hua Zhuoqian's hands, and this time, he wanted to seize the opportunity to put the Hua family to death.
Episode 9 Recap
Luo Tianxiang, cornered, told his boss the hiding place of Hua Zhen and Meng Duo Ci. He knew he had done the wrong thing and kept blaming himself after giving the information. At this moment, Hua Zhen was still waiting for the target at Jinmen Hotel. Chen Hao also came and sat next to Hua Zhen's seat.
Hua Zhen knew this matter was very dangerous and reminded him he shouldn't have come, but Chen Hao nonchalantly invited him to cooperate again. Time was urgent, so Hua Zhen told him his plan. When Chen Hao heard they were looking for the suspect using a key, he immediately stepped forward and went straight to get the key. He wanted to take the danger upon himself. Hua Zhen closely monitored the person tracking Chen Hao.
Unexpectedly, Section Chief Feng Guangyun from the Sixteenth Precinct was also at the scene. They immediately caught the person who went to get the key and discovered it was Chen Hao, and the key was also from the Fourth Police Station. They were immediately infuriated and said Chen Hao was delaying their work. The suspect Hua Zhen was following was lost at a Japanese restaurant. The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind.
As a result, Wei Daiqing saw him at the crime scene. Hua Zhen's profile was already very similar to the person he had recently investigated, and this made it even more interesting to him. He immediately ordered his subordinates to retrieve the information on the new member of the Fourth Team. Meng Duo Ci's hiding place was exposed, and the situation was critical. At this moment, Luo Tianxiang's father still went to deliver a cake to Meng Duo Ci.
After delivering the cake to the location, he left. Meng Duo Ci opened the cake box and found there wasn't enough milk, so she took the money and prepared to go out and buy milk. Just at this moment, she discovered the murderer disguised as a police officer. Meng Duo Ci hurriedly ran home, hid under the sofa, then took the telephone under the bed and called Hua Zhen's police station. The telephone rang for a long time.
At that time, Hua Zhen was looking for Chen Hao to report the situation of him following the suspect. The Fourth Captain heard about Chen Hao's aunt/sister-in-law's action and was very angry. The telephone rang, and the comrades at the police station were afraid something was wrong and didn't dare to answer the phone. Still, Luo Minmin couldn't resist answering the phone.
When she heard it was Meng Duo Ci's voice, she immediately reported the news to Chen Hao and Hua Zhen. Everyone from the entire Fourth Precinct ran out to respond to the call. Meng Duo Ci was caught by the murderer and directly abducted. The comrade arranged by the underground party to secretly protect Meng Duo Ci discovered something was wrong and immediately rushed out to protect the child, but the murderer had a gun.
After a desperate struggle, the underground party comrade used his life to buy time for Meng Duo Ci to escape. Meng Duo Ci escaped directly from the window. Hua Zhen ran to the apartment. There was no sign of Meng Duo Ci in the room, and there was a man covered in blood lying in a pool of blood. Hua Zhen had seen this man before; he was the one who came with Shi Junyu to see him.
The underground party comrade told Hua Zhen that the murderer had a gun and to quickly find the child. Chen Hao had his team members send the critically injured person to the hospital. Then he took Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin with him to look for Meng Duo Ci. The underground party comrade was sent to the hospital. He found a chance to call the organization and report the child's situation.
It was late at night, and the underground party liaison began making urgent calls. Shi Junyu's home phone also rang.
Episode 10 Recap
Shi Junyu was very surprised to hear the telephone ring. The ringtone was a code. Shi Junyu quietly opened the door. The underground party member, who usually posed as a tailor, reported the news to her. Hearing that the child was in danger, Shi Junyu was very worried. Hua Zhen and Chen Hao, along with police officers, searched everywhere for Duo Ci, calling out Meng Duo Ci's name. They finally found her in a garbage can.
Meng Duo Ci heard Hua Zhen's voice and burst into tears, feeling wronged. Fortunately, the child was okay. Hua Zhen looked at Duo Ci, her face full of tears, and felt a flood of emotions. What a troubled child, fortunately, she escaped! Luo Minmin was still guarding every intersection under the streetlights. Earlier, when she saw Hua Zhen, she hurriedly told him to rest assured that she would guard the intersection and do her best to find the child.
Now, hearing the police station's whistle, she knew the child had been found. Luo Minmin was very excited and was preparing to rejoin the team. On the way, she suddenly encountered a suspicious person. Although this person was wearing a police uniform, he seemed to have injuries on his body and acted suspiciously. Luo Minmin loudly called out to the suspect, asking him which police station he was from, why he was injured, and if he needed help.
Seeing that the other person just kept walking forward without replying, Luo Minmin became alert and immediately blocked his path. Luo Minmin was a rookie who had just joined the police force. The other person was very agile and quickly beat her until she was covered in injuries. Although Luo Minmin was covered in blood, as long as she had a shred of consciousness left, she held onto the killer's leg tightly, not letting him go.
The killer stomped on Luo Minmin's head again and again. Even when he saw Luo Minmin was unconscious, she still held onto his pants leg. The killer dragged her into a garbage truck. Meng Duo Ci was brought back to the police station. Shi Junyu quickly arrived. Meng Duo Ci told Shi Junyu that it was Luo Minmin who told her to escape if she had a chance. When Luo Minmin was mentioned, everyone realized they hadn't seen her.
The assembly whistle was blown several times, but Luo Minmin still didn't return. Everyone then went out to search for her. Hua Zhen found a hat under a streetlamp; it was Luo Minmin's. Following the bloodstains on the ground, he saw a truck. Hua Zhen desperately chased the truck and indeed found Luo Minmin, covered in blood, among the garbage in the truck. Her head was full of blood and swollen to twice its normal size.
Detecting a weak vital sign, Hua Zhen immediately performed CPR, trying to save Luo Minmin. A comrade from the police force immediately started the truck. After finally getting the truck started, Chen Hao quickly carried Luo Minmin to the hospital. After sending Luo Minmin to the emergency room, Chen Hao pulled Hua Zhen aside and asked him what was going on, why that girl was being hunted and attacked so brutally.
Hua Zhen told him that the girl was Meng Duo Ci, the surviving daughter of the Meng family. Regarding Chen Hao's repeated questions about how he got his fake identity, Luo Minmin kept quiet, only saying that she was entrusted by someone and could not reveal the matter.
Chen Hao was also an underground party member, but he couldn't figure out the relationship between Deng Mingyuan and Hua Zhen, so he didn't reveal his true identity, nor did he know the relationship between Deng Mingyuan and Meng Duo Ci. Late at night, Vice Bureau Chief Tan Shiyuan of Shanghai City urgently called Section Chief Feng Guangyun of the Sixteenth Precinct by telephone.
Section Chief Feng Guangyun walked into the office and also saw a Japanese man, Naoki Satomi, inside. This person was the head of Hongji Charitable Society, who secretly helped the Army Ministry with large amounts of funds on weekdays, attempting to establish a Japanese command post in Chinese territory. He directly reminded Section Chief Feng Guangyun that his person had been seen by a female officer from the Fourth Precinct and hoped she could be eliminated.
After Naoki Satomi left, Vice Bureau Chief Tan Shiyuan reminded Section Chief Feng Guangyun that killing a police officer was troublesome. He should not completely follow the Japanese man's orders, but also should not provoke them, lest their livelihoods be ruined if the Japanese and puppet armies were victorious in the future. By the next morning, Luo Minmin was wheeled out of the operating room. The doctor could not determine when she would wake up.
Luo Minmin's father, Luo Zhongning, Luo Tianxiang, and her older sister, Luo Qinqin, all rushed over. Seeing their sister motionless on the hospital bed, they were heartbroken.
Episode 11 Recap
Luo Minmin's father was very angry when he saw his daughter injured like this. He took a broom and hit the police officers of the Fourth Precinct one by one. Every male comrade present was unharmed, only his daughter was seriously injured.
Luo Tianxiang asked Hua Zhen with tears in his eyes, saying that during dinner at home, he had repeatedly told Hua Zhen hoping he could protect Luo Minmin, so why did she end up like this in just one day? The police officers of the Fourth Precinct were very sad and accepted the beating and scolding. Not long after, Section Chief Feng Guangyun of the Sixteenth Precinct arrived.
He was aggressively demanding to interrogate Luo Minmin, but since Luo Minmin was still in a coma at the time, Section Chief Feng Guangyun angrily berated the Fourth Precinct Chief and even physically assaulted him. Chen Hao naturally couldn't stand by; he rushed over to grab Section Chief Feng Guangyun, preventing him from hitting the Chief again. Hua Zhen also openly stepped forward to stop Section Chief Feng Guangyun from approaching the unconscious Luo Minmin.
Section Chief Feng Guangyun questioned Hua Zhen, asking how he dared to speak to him in such a tone. Hua Zhen looked him in the eye and reminded him that he had already submitted his resignation and was not obligated to answer his questions. Finally, the Chief had the police officers pull the angry Chen Hao outside the ward. Section Chief Feng Guangyun asked what happened last night.
The police officers of the Fourth Precinct maintained a consistent story, stating that they received an emergency call and encountered an accident while responding, without mentioning saving Meng Duo Ci. Luo Minmin's father saw Section Chief Feng Guangyun being so heartless and cruel, and immediately found a stretcher to carry Luo Minmin home. After Section Chief Feng Guangyun left, Chen Hao was suspended from duty. He returned to the station to pack his police uniform and belongings.
The Chief earnestly advised him not to concern himself with the Meng couple's murder case anymore and to live an easy life from now on. But Chen Hao refused. He felt that his subordinate police officer had been severely injured, and the murderer must be caught to give Luo Minmin justice. While Luo Minmin was in a coma, she tightly held a button in her hand.
The Fourth Precinct was temporarily disbanded, and a teammate handed this valuable button to Hua Zhen. Looking at the bloodstained button, Hua Zhen was pensive. His mission was not yet complete, and he could not just resign like this. Hua Zhen proposed to Chen Hao that he would withdraw his resignation and remain at the Fourth Precinct until the murderer was apprehended. Hua Zhen called Duo Ci and asked who brought the cake to their home.
Hearing that Luo Tianxiang's father also went to the apartment that day, and the killer arrived shortly after, Hua Zhen became suspicious. He wondered how Luo Minmin's father found their residence, so he went to Luo Minmin's father's house to look for clues. Luo Minmin's father disliked seeing him and refused to let him in three times in a row. Hua Zhen did not back down and insisted on entering the house to talk.
When Luo Tianxiang heard Hua Zhen asking how Luo Minmin's father knew their home address, he was so scared that he dropped and broke the cup in his hand. Luo Minmin's father was very angry and did not tell him the truth. Hua Zhen left the Luo family's door and stayed nearby, keeping watch. Coincidentally, Chen Hao was also near the Luo family's house. He bought many eggs and quietly delivered them to the Luo family.
Luo Tianxiang was going out to get medicine for Luo Minmin. On the way, he encountered the hoodlums who always bothered him. It was Chen Hao and Hua Zhen who helped him get rid of them. Luo Tianxiang finally revealed the truth about his leak. The photos were given to them by the Mahjong parlor owner. Luo Tianxiang explained that if he hadn't been desperate, he really wouldn't have betrayed his friend. Hua Zhen understood the whole story.
Before leaving, he instructed him to let the matter end there and not to let Luo Minmin know. Hua Zhen had good intentions. If Hua Zhen knew it was her own brother who had put him in a difficult position, he probably would never forgive him. Chen Hao and Hua Zhen went to the Mahjong parlor and asked where the photos came from.
The Mahjong parlor owner replied, after receiving a bribe, that they were given by the owner of the Dongguang Pawnshop. Chen Hao and Hua Zhen immediately went to the Dongguang Pawnshop to look for clues. The clerk working there, upon hearing them inquire about the photos, lied and was about to go out to report. He was stopped by Hua Zhen and Chen Hao.
Episode 12 Recap
The panic-stricken looks of the pawnshop clerks exposed their secret. Just as Hua Zhen and Chen Hao were about to question them about who gave them the photos, the pawnshop owner took advantage of the moment and immediately called his superior. Shortly after, a sergeant arrived at the pawnshop with a group of subordinates.
They were arrogant and overbearing, thinking Hua Zhen was just from a small police unit, and even pulled out their guns, warning Hua Zhen to know when to quit. When Hua Zhen heard that the other party was from the Songhu Garrison Headquarters and that his classmate An Yin was also there, he called the headquarters directly. The call was fortunately answered by An Yin. Hearing that his classmate was in trouble, An Yin immediately sent people to help.
Chen Hao was once again surprised to see that Hua Zhen had connections at the Songhu Garrison Headquarters. An Yin was at the intersection, so Hua Zhen went to greet him. Chen Hao, out of curiosity, also went over and overheard the conversation between Hua Zhen and An Yin. An Yin and Hua Zhen attended the same school and had a good relationship.
Hearing that Hua Zhen had been searching for news about the murder of the Meng couple, he kindly warned him not to get involved with the Communist Party and asked him if the investigation had anything to do with Deng Mingyuan. Hua Zhen clearly told him that the investigation of this case had nothing to do with his teacher.
An Yin was from the KMT-controlled area, and he expressed his concern that if Hua Zhen ever really became involved with the Communist Party, they should no longer contact each other in the future. After An Yin left, Chen Hao treated Hua Zhen to a meal. Having worked together for a while, Chen Hao asked him about his relationship with Deng Mingyuan. Upon hearing that Hua Zhen was Deng Mingyuan's student, Chen Hao was very excited.
This was a student taught by the senior he admired. Chen Hao respected Deng Mingyuan's high moral standing and reputation, and he never expected to meet one of his students someday. Indeed, he possessed an extraordinary demeanor, truly worthy of being his teacher's student. Chen Hao was born into a poor peasant family and had been secretly involved in underground party liaison work.
He was not highly educated but had a fervent revolutionary passion and was an ambitious and promising young man. He had always hoped to join the Communist Party. Section Chief Feng found the address of the apartment Hua Zhen had previously rented. He saw that Meng Duo Ci's name was not listed in the tenant register kept by the apartment owner, and the apartment staff claimed to know nothing.
His subordinate then reported that Hua Zhen and Chen Hao had gone to see the pawnshop owner again during the day. He was very angry, feeling that he had been constantly "cleaning up after" Chen Hao and Hua Zhen, and that they consistently ignored his advice and continued to investigate the case stubbornly. He couldn't afford to offend either side.
Section Chief Feng was frustrated and had nowhere to vent his anger when the phone in Hua Zhen's apartment room suddenly rang. Section Chief Feng alertly answered the phone. The call was from Hua Zhen's brother. When Section Chief Feng heard the other party introduce himself as the Second Secretary of the Aide-de-camp Office, he was so angry that he threw the phone away. He thought the other party was a fraud, not realizing he had missed an important clue.
A comrade from the underground party who had secretly protected Meng Duo Ci while living in the apartment building had sacrificed himself during torture. When Wei Daiqing searched his belongings, he found a belt. This belt was very expensive, and it was said to be used to bind wounds. Wei Daiqing ordered his subordinates to go to Nanjing to investigate who had purchased this kind of belt. Chen Hao took Hua Zhen to stay at his home.
Walking through a bustling alley, the neighbors were all very familiar with Chen Hao. After a while, local patrol police came to Chen Hao's house to register Hua Zhen's identity card. Hua Zhen showed them the identity card belonging to "Xiang Yuansheng". Chen Hao knew it was fake and immediately made up an excuse to send the patrol police away. Hua Zhen asked Chen Hao when he had discovered that he was using a fake identity.
Chen Hao frankly admitted that he had known for a long time and stated that Xiang Yuansheng himself had been declared missing three years ago. This person had no direct relatives, and only the landlord knew about this matter.
When Hua Zhen asked about Chen Hao's relationship with Deng Mingyuan, Chen Hao also chose to conceal it to protect him: he did not know Deng Mingyuan, but had only met someone by chance who told him that he would be a very good police officer in the future, and he had chosen that mission. Section Chief Feng secretly summoned Zhou Chang, the captain of the field action team, and gave him a photo of Hua Zhen, instructing him to quietly kill this person.
Episode 13 Recap
Chen Hao and Hua Zhen came to the Lanhe Restaurant. This was the restaurant that made the call to the pawnshop, and it was this restaurant that mailed the photo to the pawnshop. Hua Zhen had also been here before while tracking the murderer. At the Lanhe Restaurant, Hua Zhen asked about the staff working there. A waiter said that the person who made the saury dish that day was a Japanese student named Yoshida Hideo.
Hearing that this person had just taken a month off, Chen Hao and Hua Zhen quietly snuck into the staff locker room. In Yoshida Hideo's locker, they found a Japanese school uniform and also discovered the button Luo Minmin had clutched in her hand when she was injured. Hua Zhen had seen this person before, and now he was even more certain that this Yoshida Hideo was the murderer of the Meng couple.
He and Chen Hao were on the road planning to search for schools with this kind of uniform when they were suddenly ambushed from behind. Fortunately, Chen Hao reacted quickly and shielded Hua Zhen beneath himself. Afterward, Chen Hao speculated that it was Feng Guangyun's people. Although this incident was dangerous, Chen Hao was not afraid of Feng Guangyun and continued to investigate the case. Luo Minmin's body had mostly recovered.
She was helping out at the family's photo studio, but she constantly longed to return to the police force, lying in bed without making a sound each day. Her sister saw this and talked to their father, hoping he would support Luo Minmin continuing her work. Luo's father didn't say anything, so Luo Minmin's sister ran to find Hua Zhen, hoping he could come to their house that evening.
Chen Hao was a bit puzzled when he heard this, wondering if he wasn't the police team captain. Shi Junyu found the underground party's liaison through the signals in the newspaper. It was Qiao Jianshi. Qiao Jianshi gave Shi Junyu a photo showing a "venomous fang" left in China by the Japanese and puppet forces.
He also brought news that the organization had originally planned to send him to Nanjing to rescue Deng Mingyuan, but Deng Mingyuan was worried that more comrades would sacrifice themselves because of his rescue, so he refused the organization's plan to send people to rescue him. Seeing Deng Mingyuan's handwritten letter, Shi Junyu was moved to tears.
For the people of the entire country to live a good life, they were ready to make sacrifices at any time – this was the meaning of becoming a party member. Qiao Jianshi also asked Shi Junyu to reactivate the radio station and be responsible for contacting the central headquarters and Shanghai from then on. Deng Mingyuan had already given the key to the bank safety deposit box that the Meng couple had used to the organization.
Now the organization was giving the key to Shi Junyu. This box contained all the savings deposited by the Meng couple, which they were preparing to use to support the front line with weapons and medical supplies for the wounded. Yoshida Hideo found the mahjong parlor and asked who had found Meng Duo Ci's hiding place that day.
He learned it was Luo Minmin's brother and that their family ran a photo studio nearby, so he planned to find the person that night. Yoshida Hideo's accomplice was the murderer who severely injured Luo Minmin that night. For secrecy, they switched and sent another comrade instead. Hua Zhen knew Luo Minmin was in a bad mood, so he quietly took her out for a change of scenery. They evaded Luo's father's watch.
Hua Zhen took Luo Minmin boating by the river. The evening breeze by the river was fresh and pleasant. Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin chatted about basic knowledge of boats and shared some interesting experiences they had personally encountered. Hua Zhen's face showed a smile he hadn't displayed in a long time. Danger was approaching. At home, Luo's father was scolding Luo Tianxiang and his sister for confessing without being asked, thus covering for Luo Minmin's departure.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Luo's father opened the door and saw a Japanese person speaking broken Chinese. The person claimed to be from a newspaper and wanted to interview Luo Minmin about her heroic deeds, and also asked how they found Meng Duo Ci. Luo's father had never even heard of Meng Duo Ci's name and directly kicked the Japanese person out.
Just as the Japanese person pulled out a pistol, ready to force his way in and attack, a voice calling at the door was heard from behind him, and the Japanese person immediately hid. The visitors were new police officers from Team Four. They had brought some nutritional supplements to visit Luo Minmin, but they unexpectedly saved Luo Minmin's family's lives with this visit. Luo's father wasn't polite at all with these friends who came to visit.
He waited until Hua Zhen brought Luo Minmin back. Luo's father said in surprise that there had just been a Japanese person who claimed to be Luo Tianxiang's friend. Luo Tianxiang immediately replied that he had no Japanese friends. Then, Hua Zhen was greatly startled when he heard Luo's father say that the Japanese person had also asked him about Meng Duo Ci.
Episode 14 Recap
Hua Zhen heard that a Japanese person had come to inquire about Meng Duo Ci, and had also mentioned Luo Tianxiang and Luo Minmin's names. He immediately ran out, and the team's colleagues also reflexively went out to look for the person. Hua Zhen told his teammates that only the murderer knew Luo Minmin's name, and now coming to her home was malicious.
That whole night, the police officers from Team Four secretly guarded Luo Minmin's home, and they would act immediately if anything happened. Chen Hao had already found the origin of the school badge on that Japanese person; it was a school opened by Japanese people in Hongkou. After considering for the past few days, Luo Minmin seriously told her father that she wanted to continue being a police officer.
Before, she wanted to protect her brother through being a police officer and drive away those who bullied their family. Now she felt that being a police officer seemed to be her unfinished mission. Although her father was helpless, seeing his daughter so determined to do something for the first time in her life, he had no choice but to agree. Hua Zhen returned to the police station in the morning.
The station chief angrily asked them where they had been. Also, the mahjong parlor owner was mysteriously hanged last night, and the errand boy inside was shot dead. This was a big case. The station chief saw that Chen Hao had also returned and was just asking him what was going on when he was carried away by his subordinates. Chen Hao and Hua Zhen quickly cross-referenced the clues they had.
Just at this moment, Luo Minmin's father came, leading his daughter. This time, Luo Minmin's father personally sent his daughter back to the police team. The team members were very excited. Chen Hao went to report to the station chief about what happened last night. The station chief covered his face with a newspaper and accused Chen Hao of always getting involved in this muddy water, not living a good life, and so on.
Suddenly, Chen Hao saw an advertisement published in the newspaper. It had signals sent by the underground party, asking him to meet at the appointed place on that day. Only Chen Hao and Deng Mingyuan knew this signal. Now, seeing the message summoning him for a meeting, Chen Hao was very excited. He quickly snatched the newspaper and rushed out, making the station chief inexplicably confused. The person who came to meet Chen Hao on the street was Shi Junyu.
After verifying the signal, Shi Junyu brought Chen Hao the organization's arrangements and also gave him a photo. On it were Tan Shiyuan, the deputy chief of the Shanghai Police Station, and the Japanese Naoki Satomi. Shi Junyu told Chen Hao that this Naoki Satomi was once a leader in the Japanese military. He had done many bad things in China. Now he had come to Shanghai again, obviously with a special purpose.
Shi Junyu asked Chen Hao to find an opportunity to eliminate him. This was exactly what Chen Hao wanted. They had already traced this Japanese person while investigating the case of the Meng couple's murder. Shi Junyu told Chen Hao that the organization had already transferred Deng Mingyuan's previous codename to him. From now on, his codename would be Zero Three Seven. Deng Mingyuan, in order not to put party comrades in danger, refused the rescue plan.
Chen Hao couldn't help but feel sad. Once upon a time, he and Deng Mingyuan envisioned the future, hoping he could also have a codename like his. Now he finally had it, but it came with the news of his teacher's sacrifice. Hua Zhen was discussing the next day's arrest plan with Chen Hao at the police station. They planned to stake out near the school. If everything went smoothly, they would immediately catch Naoki Satomi.
After witnessing the sentencing in person, Hua Zhen would leave this place. Chen Hao was a bit reluctant. Through the acquaintance of these past few days, he knew that Hua Zhen was a good prospect for criminal investigation. It was a pity that he was not in their team. Chen Hao led the police officers from Team Four to stake out at that Japanese school. Finally, they spotted the suspect. But the other person ran too fast.
He quickly disappeared into a large cathedral. There were many rooms inside, making it very difficult to find him. Luo Minmin suggested leaving her alone to lure the Japanese person out.
Episode 15 Recap
The light in the room was very dim. Luo Minmin offered herself as bait, walking in front, feeling apprehensive. Hua Zhen followed close behind her. Finally, they saw the brutal Japanese person. Their eyes met, and the Japanese person leaped up to harm Luo Minmin, but was immediately kicked down by Hua Zhen. Luo Minmin originally had a good chance to counterattack, but she hadn't undergone formal combat training and almost put herself in danger.
Seeing that there were many people, the Japanese person continued to flee. Chen Hao and Hua Zhen rushed over. The Japanese person had a gun in hand. Worried that the other colleagues from Team Four were in danger, Chen Hao locked the door of the room he was about to enter. After working with Hua Zhen to subdue the Japanese person, Chen Hao took out handcuffs.
After putting the Japanese person in handcuffs, Chen Hao also handcuffed Hua Zhen to the side, saying he was going to hand the Japanese person over to the Sixteenth Police Station. Hua Zhen was very angry when he heard this. He knew that Feng Guangyun from the Sixteenth Bureau colluded with the Japanese people and that it was impossible to get justice for the Meng couple. Of course, Chen Hao would not hand the murderer over to Feng Guangyun.
He had anticipated this with Shi Junyu before, but to protect Hua Zhen, Chen Hao still lied. Chen Hao escorted the Japanese person to the French Concession. Soon, Shi Junyu arrived with the police from the French Concession. Shi Junyu produced an arrest warrant, reporting that the Japanese person had killed someone in the French Concession, and presented the dagger as physical evidence.
Chen Hao deliberately pretended to be unaware and was reluctant to hand over the murderer he had finally caught to the French Concession. After taking the Japanese person away, Shi Junyu told Chen Hao that the Japanese people's influence in China was currently very strong. Even if the murderer was caught, he could not be sentenced to death. The final outcome would be nothing more than being sent back to his country and paying a fine to settle the matter.
Chen Hao felt very disheartened. This was the most ideal outcome – on Chinese territory, they couldn't convict a Japanese person, and they could only watch them get away with it. It was just extradition, just temporarily preventing them from acting wildly on Chinese soil. Chen Hao also asked Shi Junyu about Hua Zhen's identity. Shi Junyu had investigated before and found that Hua Zhen had a strong family background.
He was currently studying at the Naval Academy and would become an important figure within the Kuomintang after graduation. He was completely different from them and could not possibly become one of them. Chen Hao felt very regretful. He had already considered Hua Zhen his closest friend. Thinking that they might face each other as enemies in the future, he could not accept it.
In the evening, Chen Hao returned home and saw Hua Zhen waiting for him at the door. Hua Zhen wanted an explanation. Chen Hao claimed that he was taken away by the French Concession police halfway there. Hua Zhen questioned Chen Hao why he didn't trust the Kuomintang so much, saying that even if someone from the Sixteenth Sub-bureau was corrupt, it didn't mean the entire Nationalist Government was corrupt accomplices. He even struck Chen Hao.
Chen Hao was also full of grievances; he hated the Japanese people more than anyone and hoped to bring them to justice. The next day, Hua Zhen went to see Shi Junyu in the French Concession again. Shi Junyu reconfirmed that extraditing the murderer was the best possible outcome. Meanwhile, Wei Daiqing was not idle either. He had been tracking whose belt was tied to the Communist Party member's body.
He tracked it all the way to Nanjing and heard the tailor shop owner confirm that it was specially custom-made for him by Hua Zhen's mother. Wei Daiqing was overjoyed and immediately requested an arrest from Secretary-General Guo of the Kuomintang that night. However, Secretary-General Guo was very cautious and refused to issue an arrest warrant based solely on this belt. He asked Wei Daiqing to find more clues.
Wei Daiqing devised a plan to meet Hua Zhen, deliberately claiming that Deng Mingyuan was about to be executed and that Hua Zhen could go see his teacher one last time. Originally, Wei Daiqing was hoping to find evidence that Hua Zhen was a Communist Party member. Who knew that during the eavesdropping, he heard Hua Zhen still asking Deng Mingyuan if he had really joined the GD? Wei Daiqing's calculation was wrong; the opportunity he had worked so hard to create turned out to be completely useless.
Episode 16 Recap
Hua Zhen met Deng Mingyuan for the last time and also resolved his doubts. His teacher was still as upright as when they first met. In class, Deng Mingyuan said he was ready to fight at any time for the prosperity of the motherland. Now Hua Zhen knew that his teacher had never left the battlefield, upholding his beliefs alone, and willing to sacrifice everything for the country. How great this was.
Hua Zhen's older brother returned home and told their father about the news released within the KMT today. Chairman Chiang was prepared for the sixth encirclement and suppression campaign against the Communist Party. For them, with the Japanese and puppet forces currently running rampant, not fighting the Japanese but being busy with domestic anti-communist campaigns was indeed somewhat a waste of time. Hua Zhen and Duoci Meng looked at a poem left by Deng Mingyuan for Hua Zhen.
On the surface, the meaning of this line was for the welfare of the nation, but Hua Zhen knew his teacher would not emphasize this line of poetry to him without reason. Just then, a letter was slipped under the door. The letter told him to go to No. 6 Xinping Road, which might provide answers. Following the address, Hua Zhen found a letter left by Deng Mingyuan for him.
Deng Mingyuan had secretly asked the underground party to relay it to him, explaining the secret behind asking Hua Zhen to deliver boat tickets to the Meng couple. The Meng couple had always been gathering businessmen and patriots from the patriotic committee. They secretly supported the front lines with the funds they raised, silently contributing to national unity.
Now, the last sum of money raised by the Meng couple had begun to circulate and would become a powerful bullet to drive out the Japanese and puppet forces. In the letter, Deng Mingyuan told Hua Zhen that one day, Hua Zhen would understand his choice. The place Hua Zhen arrived at was an orphanage. Many children there were descendants of revolutionary soldiers who had sacrificed themselves.
Heroes shed their blood and sacrificed their lives on the front lines, yet the Party had not forgotten them. They protected their children and would nurture these sparks of revolution into pillars of society. Deng Mingyuan was taken back to Nanjing and executed by firing squad. The underground party comrade hidden among them was very sad and couldn't help but shed tears while unlocking Deng Mingyuan's handcuffs. Deng Mingyuan gently held his hands to comfort him.
After Hua Zhen left Chen Hao's home, Chen Hao would think of the days spent with Deng Mingyuan and Hua Zhen every time he returned home. Upon hearing the news of the teacher's execution, he could no longer hold back his tears.
The Japanese person Chen Hao had caught earlier was originally sentenced to extradition back to his country, but he was still not giving up and continued to escape from the ship, wanting to chase after the funds raised by the Meng couple and also continue to look for Duoci Meng. However, this Japanese person was discovered by Hua Zhen, who was hiding in the dark, just after getting off the ship. Such an atrocious crime by the Japanese pirate!
Hua Zhen personally shot and killed this bandit. Chen Hao returned home and found his cherished firearm missing. He guessed it must be Hua Zhen. Soon after, he finally found Hua Zhen on the deck, immediately grabbed his hand, and helped him escape. Late at night, Hua Zhen took out the last letter left by Teacher Deng Mingyuan for him. The teacher's firm belief and revolutionary will had deeply influenced him.
Lighting the letter, Hua Zhen now had the answer in his heart. Chen Hao advised him to go home early and erase everything that had happened here. Feng Guangyun and Secretary-General Guo were summoned by Naoki Satomi. The body of the shot Japanese person was found, and the Japanese were very indignant, forcing Feng Guangyun to immediately find the suspect. In front of the Japanese, Feng Guangyun bowed and scraped, looking completely like a traitorous lackey.
After returning from the Japanese, Secretary-General Guo told Feng Guangyun not to take the Japanese people's words too seriously. They were currently just accumulating capital and were just like reeds swaying in the wind. As long as they didn't offend the Japanese, it was fine; anything that would affect their career interests was out of the question. The Police Department of the French Concession also wrote a letter of commendation to Secretary-General Guo, praising them for catching the murderer. For this, Secretary-General Guo ordered Chen Hao's reinstatement to his official position.
Episode 17 Recap
Wei Daiqing caught an underground party comrade and intended to extract useful clues from him, but despite severe torture and interrogation, he got nothing. Wei Daiqing then took his men to search Zhang润金's residence and just happened to find a letter. This letter was sent from Guangzhou, stating that the house Zhang润金 rented was unoccupied and asking if the lease could be terminated. Wei Daiqing quickly took his men, disguised, to Guangzhou.
After tricking the landlord, he obtained Zhang Runjin's luggage. From the suitcase, he found several identity documents, one of which was for "Xiang Yuansheng". These identity documents were forged to help the Meng couple. Wei Daiqing had met Xiang Yuansheng himself and was very excited to see the unfamiliar photo on the document. He was worried about finding evidence that Hua Zhen was a Communist, but by chance, he could now connect the dots.
Wei Daiqing didn't care if Hua Zhen was truly a Communist, but catching a Communist would lead to promotion, so he would stop at nothing to label Hua Zhen as a "GD". Hua Zhen had taken Duoci to the orphanage run by the National Salvation Association. When they returned home for dinner, she asked Shi Junyu if she knew about that orphanage. Shi Junyu, of course, knew and told Duoci that she was one of the teachers there.
Duoci's parents had made great efforts for those children and were very respectable people. Duoci also wanted to join the organization Shi Junyu belonged to. Shi Junyu smiled gently and told Duoci some of her own past. At the age of seventeen, she eagerly chose this path, and even in the midst of ice and snow, she felt bathed in warm sunshine.
She still firmly believed in her choice now and believed that Duoci would also experience that moment when she grew up. Duoci went to say goodbye to Hua Zhen and asked him to deliver the medicine she had prepared for Luo Minmin. Duoci asked Hua Zhen if he knew what kind of person she would become in the future. Hua Zhen encouraged her to forget everything that had happened here.
She was only seven years old now and could live the life she liked and become anyone she wanted to be in the future. Holding Duoci's small shoulders, Hua Zhen thought about everything that had happened from their first meeting until now. This naive little girl, after the upheaval of losing her parents a few months ago, had become much stronger. After Luo Minmin's injuries healed, she returned to the police station.
Her colleagues had specially created a female police officers' lounge for her. It was decorated very warmly, with fresh flowers and a clean, tidy bed. Luo Minmin was very touched. The chief deliberately claimed it was made by clearing out the team's small storage room. Hua Zhen was preparing to leave the Fourth Squad. Before leaving, he gave his washed police uniform to Chen Hao.
Having known each other for a while, Chen Hao asked Hua Zhen to say goodbye to everyone in person. Chen Hao's disciplinary action had now been revoked, and the newly recruited police officers had passed their probation assessment. Everyone was especially happy and greeted Hua Zhen cheerfully, inviting him to share in their celebration. Hua Zhen told everyone his true identity and that school was about to start soon, so he had to go back to continue his university studies.
Hua Zhen apologized to everyone for using Xiang Yuansheng's name. Then he gave the medicine Duoci had prepared to Luo Minmin. Luo Minmin was very reluctant to see him go but, knowing the distance between them, said nothing. It was Chen Hao who suggested that everyone take a photo together. So, the group happily went to Luo Minmin's family's photo studio to take pictures.
Even though they were patronizing Luo Minmin's family's photo studio, Father Luo still didn't show a good face. He didn't allow individual photos and reminded everyone to smile for the camera. Finally, they took a group photo, and in the picture, everyone was smiling very happily. That evening, Luo Minmin was on duty at the police station. She looked at the group photo of Hua Zhen and herself, a very beautiful memory.
In Luo Minmin's eyes, Hua Zhen was unattainable, like a dazzling star in the sky. It was a meeting nonetheless. She also thought about when she was recovering from her injury, Hua Zhen had carried her out for a walk. What a wonderful memory! Luo Minmin's older brother and younger sister came to visit her. Her younger sister, Luo Qinqin, reminded her sister to hurry and see Hua Zhen again.
She knew her sister's feelings, but Luo Minmin vehemently denied liking Hua Zhen. However, upon hearing her sister say that Hua Zhen would go to the battlefield to fight in the future and that this might be the last time they would ever meet, she couldn't help but blame her sister for cursing someone like that. It rained in the evening. Hua Zhen couldn't help but call Luo Minmin, but the weather was bad and the signal was affected.
In the end, Hua Zhen still went to the Fourth Station. Seeing Hua Zhen with his fluttering long eyelashes and big eyes, Hua Zhen made an excuse that he had come back to look for something. Luo Minmin's eyes widened when she heard that he had come through the rain just to get a police manual. Since it was still raining outside, Hua Zhen decided to stay and chat with them for a while and leave when the rain stopped.
Luo Minmin asked Hua Zhen if he chose to join the Navy because he was conscripted. Hua Zhen couldn't help but laugh. He told Luo Minmin and Luo Qinqin that his father was the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Military Administration and his older brother was also in politics. Luo Minmin had never heard of the Ministry of Military Administration before and didn't understand what kind of place it was.
It wasn't until Hua Zhen explained that it was where people worked for Chiang Kai-shek that they suddenly understood. They had always felt that Hua Zhen was different from them, and now they realized how different he was. As for why he chose to join the Navy, Hua Zhen explained that he felt China's Navy was not strong and he hoped to contribute something to the country through his own efforts.
Episode 18 Recap
Luo Minmin heard Hua Zhen's narration. There were already aircraft carriers abroad that could carry a large tonnage, while China's navigation technology still followed the equipment of the Qing Dynasty. When Hua Zhen said these things, he was very worried about the future of the country. Luo Minmin, her sister, and her brother listened attentively. They had never heard such knowledge before; it was like a fairy tale. They had never seen giant fleets in their hometown.
Luo Minmin felt that she was too ignorant and like a frog in a well. Luo Qinqin and her brother went home first. On the way, Luo Qinqin sighed that Hua Zhen was ambitious and talented, and they were simply people from two different worlds. Hua Zhen was dazzling like a big tree, while her sister was like a small, inconspicuous flower under the tree.
Luo Qinqin knew that Hua Zhen's future would be very promising, seemingly beyond the reach of a family like theirs. However, her brother felt it was quite fitting for Luo Minmin, as a small flower, to nestle under the big tree. At dawn, Hua Zhen got up to say goodbye to Luo Minmin. Luo Minmin wanted to see Hua Zhen off to Nanjing by train the next day.
Hua Zhen politely refused and sincerely said that the purpose of his visit tonight had been achieved. He had seen the person he wanted to see and said what he wanted to say. He would leave with his university classmates. Luo Minmin was very surprised to hear Hua Zhen's words and asked him, confused, about the purpose of his visit tonight.
Hua Zhen smiled and looked at Luo Minmin, saying it was just to see the person he wanted to see. Luo Minmin saw Hua Zhen off to the police station entrance. They encountered Wei Daiqing's investigation team head-on. Wei Daiqing arrested Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin on the grounds of being Communist suspects. Hua Zhen realized the seriousness of the matter and immediately reminded Wei Daiqing that Luo Minmin was his girlfriend and could not be taken away without reason.
However, Wei Daiqing seized on Hua Zhen's weakness and insisted on putting handcuffs on Luo Minmin. Hua Zhen's brother, Hua Liang, quickly heard the news. After discussing with his father, he immediately went to Shanghai and demanded that Hua Zhen be taken to Nanjing for trial. But Wei Daiqing insisted that he had found conclusive evidence and that Hua Zhen could only be publicly tried in Shanghai. Hua Liang also went to ask the chief of the police headquarters.
Although the chief had a good relationship with the Hua family, anything involving GD was currently very difficult to handle. Hua Liang remained puzzled. His younger brother had always followed the family's arrangements since childhood, so why had he changed after coming to Shanghai this time? Afterwards, Hua Liang went to see the police station where his brother had stayed, trying to find the reason.
However, after looking around, he felt that the people inside had no background and limited abilities. The only one who volunteered to help if the Fourth Station was needed, just as he was about to leave, was someone who greatly moved Hua Zhen.
Episode 19 Recap
Late at night, Wei Daiqing reported the progress of his recent investigation to his superior. Wei Daiqing's superior had always wanted to bring down the Hua family and directly told Wei Daiqing that as long as he could confirm Hua Zhen as a Communist, he could give him the position of Assistant Prosecutor. Wei Daiqing had coveted power for a long time. He came from a peasant background and had no background, so promotion was relatively difficult.
In order to get this position, he took a risk by finding the deserter imprisoned in the jail. So he said that as long as he could get Hua Zhen to sign the confession, he would be immediately released. The deserter walked into Hua Zhen's cell carrying a dagger, unaware that he was no match for Hua Zhen at all. Hua Zhen used his tie to strangle the person threatening him unconscious.
In order not to let anyone catch his handle, Wei Daiqing directly shot the unconscious deserter and then buried him alive. His subordinate who saw the shocking scene felt extremely scared afterwards, thinking that his direct superior was so cruel and ruthless, committing every kind of evil, and maybe this would be his fate in the future. - Shi Junyu finally repaired the radio.
She couldn't wait to ask the organization whether Hua Zhen was truly one of their comrades and soon received a reply that Hua Zhen was not one of them. Shi Junyu immediately passed the news she received to Chen Hao, telling him not to act rashly and to definitely stay away from Hua Zhen during this time, otherwise it was very likely to cause trouble for Hua Zhen. Chen Hao remembered that belt.
In order to help Runjin stop bleeding, Hua Zhen did not hesitate to take off his belt and tie it on him. Unexpectedly, this had become his stumbling block. - In court, Wei Daiqing was aggressive, strongly arguing that Hua Zhen was closely related to Runjin and that the photo on the Communist's fake identification was also his own photo.
In fact, in order to fabricate unfounded charges, Wei Daiqing directly sent people to silence the landlord of the Shanghai rental house. The situation was very unfavorable for Hua Zhen. Hua Liang tried hard to plead with trusted higher-ups and finally secured three days to verify the evidence. - During the process of searching for evidence, Wei Daiqing kept sending people to secretly monitor, attempting to interfere with Hua Liang finding evidence. Hua Liang had an idea, adapting his strategy.
Late at night, he secretly went to find Chen Hao and arranged some matters. Then he had his assistant arrange for the tailor who custom-made the belt for Hua Zhen to meet at a cafe, intentionally letting Wei Daiqing see it. Sure enough, the next day at the appointed time, before Hua Liang had even started talking to the newly arrived tailor, Wei Daiqing sent people to chase after them to prevent the tailor and Hua Liang from talking.
Wei Daiqing thought his actions were impeccable and he would soon be promoted to a high position. He even specifically went to a luxury store to buy himself a pair of expensive shoes. He was arrogant and even made the sales associate kneel on one knee to put the new shoes on him. Walking out of the shoe store, he directly gave his subordinate the old shoes he had changed out of.
Three years ago, his subordinate took out all his savings to buy him a new pair of leather shoes. Now he was going to "gift" his old shoes to his subordinate. Receiving Wei Daiqing's old shoebox, the policeman's hand trembled slightly. - Late at night, Wei Daiqing came to the prison again, forcing Hua Zhen to sign the confession earlier.
At this moment, Wei Daiqing was no longer bothered to continue pretending and spoke arrogantly, saying that it was only because of Hua Zhen's status that there were still people helping to search for evidence. If it were someone else, they would have long become a pit in the wilderness. Wei Daiqing's words and actions made Hua Zhen feel chilled. From birth until he came to Nanjing, he had always lived a life of privilege and had never seen the bureaucratic style within the Kuomintang.
Episode 20 Recap
Hua Zhen was brought to the military court again for investigation. Wei Daiqing first started by asking about the belt. Hua Liang claimed that he did not find the receipt for the belt at home. Wei Daiqing was not surprised; he had already obtained the belt's receipt, strongly arguing that Hua Zhen was not only a Communist accomplice but also used a fake identity to participate in the crime. Hua Liang saw that Wei Daiqing was prepared and aggressive.
Not only that, Wei Daiqing even found the tailor shop owner who made this belt. Hua Liang checked his watch repeatedly, trying hard to delay the trial time. Outside the courtroom, Chen Hao was anxiously waiting at the airport. As soon as he saw the witness Hua Liang found, he quickly drove her to the court. On the way, the car broke down, so Chen Hao went to find a repairman, sweating anxiously, afraid of delaying the time.
Suddenly, he saw a rickshaw nearby and immediately used it to pull the witness towards the court. Chen Hao desperately pulled the rickshaw at all costs; time was life. Finally, with the collective effort of the members of the Fourth Department, the key witness Hua Liang found was brought to the military court. The arrival was the landlady Wei Daiqing had chased to Shanghai to meet. It was from there that several documents were found to frame and falsely accuse.
Just the day before, Wei Daiqing had sent his subordinate to Shanghai to assassinate the landlady. He did not expect Hua Liang to find her so quickly. Hua Liang saw his surprised expression and retorted contemptuously that Wei Daiqing might only have thought of trains and ships, but he himself had used a military plane to pick up the landlady, departing only this morning. The landlady told the judge the whole process she knew.
She collected these four identification documents, and the photo of one of them, named "Xiang Yuansheng," had been swapped. Wei Daiqing's expression was very dramatic. He still stubbornly insisted that the landlady was lying, pointing the finger directly at Hua Liang, now not even respecting the First Secretary of the Attendant's Office. Hua Liang had already given him face, but Wei Daiqing shamelessly continued, questioning Hua Liang on how he obtained the evidence of the swapped photo.
Wei Daiqing probably hadn't thought that someone would actually testify for Hua Liang, namely his subordinate Gao Pingshun, to whom he had just given his old shoes a few days ago. Finally, Hua Zhen was released innocent. Hua Liang took Hua Zhen out of the courtroom. On the way, they met Wei Daiqing. Hua Zhen called out his name and directly punched him. Wei Daiqing knew he was in the wrong and naturally did not dare to make a sound.
It was the first time Hua Liang saw his younger brother punch someone, and this kind of punch clearly showed it wasn't the first time. Hua Zhen walked out of the courtroom and saw the silent Chen Hao in the corner. The other team members had been taken to the Golden Gate Hotel for dinner. Chen Hao had been waiting outside the courtroom. Hua Zhen walked over to say goodbye to Chen Hao.
The two men's eyes met; they didn't need to say much to understand each other. Chen Hao shook Hua Zhen's hand and chuckled, telling him not to use other people's names anymore, to go back to school properly, and forget everything that happened in Shanghai. Hua Zhen got into the car and looked back to see Chen Hao still standing there watching him leave. What a great friendship, a bond as strong as iron.
Hua Zhen felt a warmth in his heart. Hua Liang made an excuse that he had originally planned to treat the people from the Fourth Department to a meal, but they were suddenly assigned a mission. Hua Zhen wanted to go to the Fourth Department to say goodbye to his comrades. This time, escaping danger, the teammates from the Fourth Department were truly loyal.
Hua Liang refused his request and directly asked his secretary to send Hua Zhen to the station. Before the train departed, Hua Zhen hurriedly found a phone and called Luo Minmin. He told Luo Minmin his school address and also hoped they could keep in touch frequently by phone in the future. Luo Minmin hesitated. Hua Zhen eagerly confirmed with her again if she would communicate and if she remembered his school address.
Luo Minmin understood the meaning behind Hua Zhen's words and did not respond. The scene of Hua Zhen talking on the phone with Luo Minmin was overheard by Hua Liang, who was going to the Golden Gate Hotel. He guessed that his younger brother might have truly fallen for this girl. Just as Luo Minmin felt a slight sense of relief, Hua Liang spoke to her privately.
He implied that the distance between their two families was too great, and their future life paths would be completely different. He also revealed that Hua Zhen was going to get engaged to a girl in half a month. Although their family had great power, many things were done out of necessity. Even Hua Zhen didn't know about the engagement. Hua Liang saw signs of rebellion in his younger brother, and he was determined to do everything possible to help his brother draw a clear line with everything in Shanghai.
Episode 21 Recap
Hua Zhen finally returned safely to Nanjing. Sitting in an exquisite small car, he returned quickly and smoothly all the way to his long-separated home. The house steward opened the door for them early, and the servants were busy repairing the nursery and cooking delicious dishes, a scene of peace and harmony. However, this time, Hua Zhen's mood upon returning was completely different from before. The dining table was dull.
Hua Zhen's mother fed back to him the news she had just learned—originally Hua Zhen had passed the elite class examination, but recently he was eliminated during the political review stage. The elite class was a training class personally designated by Chairman Jiang, which placed special emphasis on political review, and any individual suspected of being connected with the underground party would not be accepted. His parents did not criticize Hua Zhen excessively.
Hua Liang persuaded his younger brother not to be impatient, to wait for this tense moment to pass, and then arrange for him to be the "second officer" in the fleet. This time, Hua Zhen did not agree. He retorted, asking Hua Liang what would happen to the "second officer" who was replaced. This question left Hua Liang speechless. Hua Zhen did not want to snatch away other people's opportunities. His father was very dissatisfied with his son's resistance.
He frankly stated that he heard from his elders, "Never snatch away someone else's opportunity, because it changes more than just one person's destiny. " However, in his view, opportunities are for those who can seize them, and only bad luck causes people to fall into difficulty. As soon as his father finished speaking, the atmosphere dropped to freezing point again. Hua Zhen was least willing to discuss his ideals and views with his father.
Finally, Hua Zhen changed into his school uniform, preparing to return to school. Hua Liang drove him and incidentally mentioned Hua Zhen's arranged marriage prospect, a girl from Ginling College for Women who was excellent in character and appearance, especially her father, Deputy Dean Jia. During the period when Hua Zhen was framed by Wei Daiqing, Father Luo had contacted Deputy Dean Jia, and both families approved of this marriage.
Hua Zhen refused to go on the arranged meeting, making the excuse that he had face blindness and was not good at communication. Chen Hao received a signal and met with Shi Junyu again. This time Shi Junyu received a new mission from the organization to investigate whether Feng Guangyun was closely connected with the Japanese. Originally someone personally took a photo and also went to the Sixteen Pu Wharf several times.
This reporter Peng was a member of the National Salvation Association, and the location of his disappearance was at the Sixteen Pu Wharf. Now the organization specially arranged Chen Hao to be at the Sixteen District Branch so that he could conveniently approach Feng Guangyun and thereby investigate the missing reporter Peng. Not long after, during Hua Zhen's shift, he happened to encounter the report filed by the wife of reporter Peng, also known as Peng Ganwen's wife.
Peng Ganwen's wife said that her husband had been missing for half a month. Chen Hao heard Hua Zhen's transcript and asked him to hand this case over to him to be responsible for. Chen Hao and Shi Junyu always met in the garden. In order not to attract attention, Shi Junyu gave Chen Hao some tuition fees so that he could attend a French training class on weekends.
Because Shi Junyu worked part-time as a French teacher at a church, if Chen Hao were a French student, they would have an opportunity to meet openly. Hua Zhen returned to school and started writing letters to Luo Minmin. He wrote one letter after another, but these letters were like stones sinking into the sea, there was no news at all. Hua Zhen also kept calling the Fourth Department but couldn't get through.
He seemed to have become deaf and mute, completely losing contact with Luo Minmin. In fact, the letters Hua Zhen wrote to Luo Minmin were all withheld by the person responsible for mail at the school. It was instructed by Hua Liang. Just as Hua Zhen was falling into unrequited love and being distracted every day, the school assigned him a new task: to go to Shanghai to receive torpedo boats.
Hua Zhen was just worried about not having a chance to go to Shanghai, so he readily accepted the task. As soon as Hua Zhen arrived at the wharf, he met Tian Dongbao, a police officer from the former Fourth Department. Tian Dongbao told him that shortly after Hua Zhen left the Fourth Department, the leadership of the Public Security Branch conducted a reform, and the entire Fourth Department was disbanded.
Now everyone has returned home, and he is also doing manual labor at the wharf. Tian Dongbao also invited Hua Zhen to his home tonight, and at that time, he would call together other comrades from the Fourth Department for a meal.
Episode 22 Recap
Hua Zhen was about to undergo training at the Shanghai wharf for a week. During his free time from training, he bought some fruit to visit Tian Dongbao. Everyone was very happy to see Hua Zhen; they were all former comrades. Bai Shoujun and several others brought Tian Dongbao supplies like rice, eggs, and essential winter coal briquettes. It was clear that the group often helped each other out and still maintained a close relationship.
The meal was ready, and everyone sat around the table chatting, talking about their lives after the Fourth Department was disbanded. Tian Dongbao was moving goods and doing manual labor at the wharf, Bai Shoujun was a salesman at a department store, and the former chief was now serving meals in the canteen at the Sixteenth District Branch. Hua Zhen smiled, nodded, and listened carefully. Only Chen Hao wasn't mentioned.
He specifically asked about Chen Hao's situation, and the former chief murmured that Chen Hao was currently working in the detective section of the Sixteenth District Branch. Everyone remembered how excessive the Sixteenth District Branch had been back then, and Chen Hao had also clashed with Feng Guangyun multiple times, so they hadn't expected him to end up working alongside Feng Guangyun. Hua Zhen had some questions in his mind.
As he was listening to everyone talk, he suddenly heard a familiar voice at the door—it was Luo Minmin, the girl he had been thinking about day and night in Shanghai! Luo Minmin had just returned from a female police training class. Although the Fourth Department was disbanded, she still wanted to continue studying for the police recruitment exam, so she had been diligently studying. At Tian Dongbao's home, their eyes met.
Luo Minmin was almost in tears, surprised that Hua Zhen was here too. The expressions on their faces caught the attention of the other teammates. The former chief immediately called everyone to start eating. After dinner, Hua Zhen drove Luo Minmin home. Along the way, Hua Zhen finally asked Luo Minmin about her recent life. Luo Minmin immediately said she was very busy.
Since the Fourth Department was disbanded, she had been managing her family's photo studio business while also attending classes in the evenings. Actually, Luo Minmin really wanted to ask Hua Zhen why he hadn't written to her. She didn't know that Hua Zhen had written her many letters, which had simply been intercepted by the school's teachers. Luo Minmin never voiced her doubts.
She still remembered Hua Liang's instructions to her: the distance between them was great, and they couldn't be together simply based on one person's wishful thinking. To ensure Hua Zhen had a better future, Luo Minmin deliberately said lightly that she had changed and hoped Hua Zhen wouldn't stay where he was. Hua Zhen was very sad. Although thousands of words were suppressed in his heart, not knowing if Luo Minmin cared about him, he chose to remain silent.
After dropping Hua Zhen off at his doorstep, Luo Minmin suddenly saw a back figure. This figure looked familiar; it turned out to be Reporter Peng's wife. She clutched her abdomen tightly, saying she had severe stomach pain. Furthermore, since her husband's disappearance, she had been subjected to some inexplicable stalking and pursuit. Just recently, after leaving the hospital, she was hit by a large truck. Fortunately, she escaped onto a tram.
However, after getting off, the license-plate-less large truck drove directly towards her again, clearly intending to kill her. Nevertheless, Reporter Peng's wife managed to escape all the way here. Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin understood the general situation. Seeing that Reporter Peng's wife was in very poor physical condition and the truck was rushing towards them again, in a moment of urgency, Hua Zhen immediately took Luo Minmin and Reporter Peng's wife into the car.
They struggled to evade the pursuit along the way, entering the Navy Headquarters infirmary where they settled Reporter Peng's wife. It was already late at night. Hua Zhen was worried that the truck might still be there if Luo Minmin left at this time, so he found an excuse to keep Luo Minmin at the hospital as well, claiming it would be convenient to look after Reporter Peng's wife.
The truck chasing Reporter Peng's wife belonged to killers hired by Feng Guangyun, specifically for carrying out assassinations and other illicit activities in secret. They reported everything that happened throughout the night to Feng Guangyun. Feng Guangyun was puzzled as to who had such great influence as to settle Reporter Peng's wife at the Jiangnan Shipyard. This place was a military facility with extremely strict security measures, and generally, one could not enter casually.
That night, Chen Hao was also secretly tracking the assassination truck, but he lost sight of it near a gas station. He also learned that Hua Zhen had protected Reporter Peng's wife at the Jiangnan Shipyard. He asked Shi Junyu what to do next. Shi Junyu instructed him that Feng Guangyun could not possibly trust him completely at this point, and he must maintain his distance from Reporter Peng's wife, the farther the better.
Chen Hao kept his superior's arrangement in mind, but the next day when Feng Guangyun was going to the Navy Headquarters with his men, he called upon Chen Hao. Chen Hao and the other police officers arrived at the heavily guarded Navy Headquarters. Feng Guangyun used the excuse of looking for someone but was directly denied entry. It just so happened that Hua Zhen and other sailors were going out for training and crossed paths with Feng Guangyun.
Feng Guangyun knew that Hua Zhen and Chen Hao had a good relationship, so he specifically asked Chen Hao to help facilitate entry. Hua Zhen did not agree to Chen Hao's request and refused him directly and walked away without hesitation. Chen Hao felt relieved. When he met with Shi Junyu that day, she gave him a pistol. Now the organization intended to rescue Reporter Peng and his family, and encountering Hua Zhen had made things complicated.
Shi Junyu instructed Chen Hao not to shoot unless it was an emergency. Chen Hao understood the intention; he didn't want to implicate Hua Zhen and the police officers from the Fourth Department and tried to find a compromise solution. Luo Minmin received a mission to secretly investigate who Tan Shiyuan was meeting with in secret, as this person was highly relevant to Reporter Peng's disappearance case.
While patrolling near Yipinxiang Restaurant, Chen Hao suddenly discovered that the person meeting Tan Shiyuan was none other than Hua Liang! He had met Hua Liang before and had worked with him to rescue Hua Zhen, so he couldn't be mistaken.
Episode 23 Recap
Chen Hao clearly remembered that when Shi Junyu gave him that photo, the intended target had a scar on the back of his hand. To further verify, Chen Hao deliberately hid in the restroom and finally waited for Hua Liang to also enter the restroom. He quickly pretended to wash his face. After a while, Hua Liang also came out to wash his hands.
Chen Hao clearly saw that there was indeed a scar on the back of Hua Liang's hand, exactly the same as in the photo. The situation was urgent. Chen Hao immediately contacted Shi Junyu and after reporting what he had just confirmed, Chen Hao proposed that he must immediately take Reporter Peng's wife out.
Because Hua Liang would soon know that Reporter Peng's wife was being protected by his brother at the Jiangnan Shipyard, and to clear his brother of suspicion, he would definitely bring Reporter Peng's wife out immediately. Therefore, it was essential to take Reporter Peng's wife away before Hua Liang could arrive. Chen Hao carried the pistol Shi Junyu had given him and also brought a pre-prepared identification document. He entered the hospital as quickly as possible.
While looking for Reporter Peng's wife's room, he saw Hua Zhen. Hua Zhen found it strange to see Chen Hao mixed in there and asked him what he intended to do. Chen Hao refused to answer, merely stating that if he still trusted him, please let him take Reporter Peng's wife away. Hua Zhen didn't know Chen Hao's true identity and didn't agree.
Returning to the ward, Hua Zhen asked Reporter Peng's wife what exactly her husband Peng Ganwen had done recently. Reporter Peng's wife said that before Reporter Peng disappeared, her husband had taken many photos. Only one photo contained people: the Japanese man Naoki Satomi and a back view. The back of this man had a scar on his arm, which looked very much like the letter "Y". Reporter Peng's wife even remembered which hand had the scar on the back.
Hua Zhen was secretly shocked. This person was clearly his brother Hua Liang. No wonder Chen Hao had remained silent just now; in fact, he knew everything. Chen Hao stole a white coat to disguise himself as a doctor and asked the nurse to push Reporter Peng's wife to another ward for examination. After exchanging signals with Reporter Peng's wife, she agreed to escape immediately.
As the two were preparing to leave through the back door, Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin caught up. Their eyes met. Luo Minmin asked him if he had understood Reporter Peng's background before joining the Sixteenth District Branch. Chen Hao didn't respond. Seeing that Hua Liang was about to catch up, Hua Zhen ultimately quietly gave the green light, allowing Chen Hao to take Reporter Peng's wife and escape.
Hua Liang heard from Naoki Satomi that Hua Zhen had rescued Reporter Peng's wife. He was already surprised, but when he rushed to retrieve her, he found she had just disappeared, which was simply too much of a coincidence. Hua Liang pressed Hua Zhen, asking how he knew Reporter Peng's wife and brought her to the hospital.
Hua Zhen downplayed the situation, simply stating that he went to the old site of the Fourth Department to look for a friend, encountered the ailing Reporter Peng's wife, and brought her for treatment out of sympathy. Hua Liang believed him. That night, Hua Liang went to see Naoki Satomi. The photos Reporter Peng had taken that day were precisely evidence of the Kuomintang smuggling military supplies to the Japanese side.
The boxes inside those ships had tea on the surface, but in reality, they were all filled with military equipment. High-level officials within the Kuomintang worried that once the news got out, the public knowing that Qixiang Domestic Goods Joint Operation Company was smuggling military supplies to the Japanese military would certainly cause an uproar. Shanghai Police and Hongji Shantang would both be unable to escape blame for this matter.
Naoki Satomi immediately guaranteed that the supplies would be safely delivered to Japan and the news would be suppressed. Originally, Hua Liang intended to end it there, but unexpectedly, the Japanese were fixated on Hua Zhen's matter, asking Hua Liang if he had asked Hua Zhen why he brought that woman to the hospital. Hua Liang saw the strong suspicion in the Japanese's eyes.
He solemnly reminded Naoki Satomi that he was currently busy working towards the completion of the transaction, yet they were ungrateful, which was truly excessive. Naoki Satomi knew that Hua Liang held a high position and was not someone to provoke. He immediately said it was merely a family matter. Hua Liang worried they might act against his brother without authorization and reminded them again that everything concerning Hua Zhen must, and can only, be handled by him.
Episode 24 Recap
Hua Liang made it very clear that he is currently the representative of Qixiang Domestic Goods Joint Operation Company, and the Japanese Naoki Satomi also did not want to offend him. But Tan Shiyuan was different. As the local police chief, he feared that Mrs. Peng might take action after escaping. If the business with Japan caused any trouble in Shanghai, he would be held responsible. So Naoki Satomi had Feng Guangyun secretly monitor Hua Zhen until he left Shanghai.
Chen Hao went to see Shi Junyu, looking lost and dejected. During the day, he had pointed his pistol at Hua Zhen, but unexpectedly, Hua Zhen had ultimately helped him take Mrs. Peng and escape. Chen Hao was worried that Hua Zhen would resent him for this. Shi Junyu suggested they have a meal together.
During the meal, she told Chen Hao that she had applied to the organization, hoping Chen Hao could secretly observe Hua Zhen, and when the time was right, they could consider letting Hua Zhen join them. Chen Hao was very happy that he could continue to stay in touch with Hua Zhen and enjoyed the entire meal. After the meal, Chen Hao saw Hua Zhen waiting for a long time at his doorstep. Hua Zhen asked if Mrs.
Peng had been settled. After confirming that she had been taken to a safe place, Hua Zhen remarked that he knew Reporter Peng had taken a very important photo. The back figure in that photo was his brother Hua Liang. He just didn't know why his brother was so interested in Reporter Peng's case; there must be a secret behind it.
Moreover, last time for this matter, his brother specifically went to the school again to ask if the Fourth Department knew about Reporter Peng's disappearance, fearing that he might have any connection to this case. Chen Hao suggested that they could continue to cooperate, each getting what they needed, and Hua Zhen could also find the answers he wanted. Hua Zhen smiled and nodded, and the cooperation was established.
That night, Shi Junyu contacted the underground party via radio, informing her superior that Shi Junyu's assessment had begun. Hua Zhen returned to the shipyard and heard the guard say that a girl had been waiting at the entrance all morning yesterday, and had also asked people if Hua Zhen had returned to his residence safely. Based on the guard's description, Hua Zhen guessed it was Luo Minmin.
Tian Dongbao was injured at the dock, so Bai Shoujun went to find Hua Zhen and asked him to go together. Coincidentally, Hua Zhen met Luo Minmin again this time. Returning from Tian Dongbao's home, at the entrance of Luo Minmin's house, she finally couldn't help but ask Hua Zhen why he hadn't written her letters; she had waited for a long time.
Hua Zhen was very surprised, as he had written more than ten letters to Luo Minmin in just three months and was puzzled that he hadn't received a reply. It turned out Luo Minmin cared for him. Luo Minmin's father saw Hua Zhen near their house again and was so angry he picked up a broom and threw it at him.
Since his last failed attempt to frame Hua Zhen, Wei Daiqing had been stripped of his official position and spent his days drowning his sorrows in alcohol, like a stray dog, his life in a mess. Even so, he still hadn't given up and spent all day near a public telephone booth, closely watching the people coming and going. One day, someone came to his residence looking for him and asked if he still wanted to work in intelligence.
The other party even knew that Wei Daiqing had not given up investigating Hua Zhen yet. Wei Daiqing was very surprised to hear this. Someone was actually paying him to do investigation work and also asked if he wanted to go to the Fuxing Society Secret Service, an organization directly led by Chiang Kai-shek and more prestigious than where he worked before. Wei Daiqing immediately perked up upon hearing this.
He had been resentful about not being able to bring down Hua Zhen last time and was trying every possible means to get his official position back. This time, hearing that Hua Zhen had returned to Shanghai, he was eager to give it another try and prepare to make a comeback. The other party gave him a large sum of money when leaving and told him to go to work at Anqi Beer Company the next day. During this period, any leads he investigated concerning Hua Zhen had to be kept secret from everyone else, reporting only to him.
Episode 25 Recap
Wei Daiqing arrived at the address the stranger had given him yesterday. It was a brewery, but upon entering, he saw many busy office staff. Meeting a familiar face, the person introduced him, explaining that this was actually a French Concession intelligence station, and all the personnel inside were from the intelligence bureau and were under Wei Daiqing's command. Besides a large number of people he could deploy, he was also assigned a car.
Wei Daiqing felt very proud; he felt that his opportunity to showcase his abilities had arrived! Shi Junyu spent the day inquiring about the origin of that large truck and taught French to students at the church in the evening. Chen Hao also often went to the church, using the opportunity of learning French to meet with Shi Junyu. This evening, former members of the Fourth Team were going to visit Dongbao.
Fearing that his mission might implicate his former comrades, Chen Hao claimed he was busy, but still handed over his only bit of pocket money to Luo Minmin so she could buy nutritional supplements for Dongbao. Using the clue provided by Shi Junyu, Chen Hao went to a seafood company at night to investigate. There were three large trucks nearby, and only this seafood company hadn't been investigated.
Chen Hao and Luo Minmin indeed found the large truck that had attacked them at the seafood company. It was very quiet inside at night and didn't seem like a place of business. Chen Hao concluded that this was Feng Guangyun's hideout for harboring assassins. Hua Zhen and Chen Hao got drenched at the seafood company. After returning home and changing clothes, they still went out to eat Yangchun noodles together.
Hua Zhen had already used all the money in his pocket to help Dongbao during the day, and Chen Hao also happened to not have any money. Just then, Luo Minmin arrived and treated the two of them to noodles. Luo Minmin guessed that the two of them had teamed up again to investigate the Reporter Peng case, so she pleaded with Chen Hao to let her join them in the investigation to fulfill a wish of hers.
After Luo Minmin's continuous pleading, Chen Hao nodded and agreed. Chen Hao returned to the police station during the day to investigate the vehicle files and happened to run into Feng Guangyun. Although Chen Hao had become a police officer at the 16th precinct, Feng Guangyun still didn't trust him and sternly warned him not to enter the archives without permission from now on. Chen Hao told Shi Junyu about Luo Minmin joining their investigation.
Shi Junyu remembered that Luo Minmin had saved Meng Duo Ci last time, and she agreed. With Luo Minmin's addition, it could bring some convenience to Chen Hao and Hua Zhen. After several days of reconnaissance, Chen Hao was almost able to locate Reporter Peng's place of detention.
He and Hua Zhen devised a plan for Luo Minmin to disguise herself as a female reporter and follow Hua Zhen back, in order to attract the attention of the people tracking them. Indeed, everything went as they expected; Feng Guangyun's men really thought Hua Zhen was taking Mrs. Peng back, so they quietly followed them all the way and then called Feng Guangyun, telling him to hurry and catch them.
Hua Zhen helped Luo Minmin escape from the apartment balcony. To buy time for Chen Hao, he stayed put, faked the scene, and then escaped through the window as well. Since some people were lured away by Hua Zhen, the number of guards left for the imprisonment was slightly reduced. Chen Hao then quietly snuck into the target location, found the room where Reporter Peng was held. Reporter Peng was seriously injured.
Originally, Chen Hao thought they would escape together, but Reporter Peng was in a coma, so he had no choice but to carry him and run out with all his might. Feng Guangyun brought many people to catch Mrs. Peng. After great effort breaking down the door, they found that there was no one inside. Only then did Feng Guangyun realize he had been tricked. At this time, Chen Hao rescued Reporter Peng and escaped to safety.
Episode 26 Recap
Feng Guangyun heard that Reporter Peng had been rescued. After a period of fruitless effort, not only did he accomplish nothing, but he also lost the important hostage he had originally captured. Filled with frustration and nowhere to vent, he turned his head and saw Hua Zhen leisurely drinking coffee in a nearby cafe. Feng Guangyun became enraged and rushed into the cafe, intending to confront Hua Zhen directly.
Suddenly, he remembered his superior's instruction not to provoke Hua Zhen, so he turned away reluctantly and left. Chen Hao settled Peng Ganwen in a safe place, but Peng Ganwen remained unconscious. He needed to recuperate well during these days, and only after he woke up would they know the recent situation. Hua Zhen took Luo Minmin home and was seen by Luo Minmin's father.
Luo Minmin's father politely declined Hua Zhen, hoping he would not take Luo Minmin home again. After Hua Zhen left, Luo Minmin's father earnestly advised his daughter not to stay in contact with Hua Zhen, because their two families were very far apart in status, and Hua Zhen often disappeared, making the relationship too tiring. Luo Minmin understood all this, but every time she saw Hua Zhen, she felt as if she were walking towards the sun.
Feng Guangyun reported his mistake to Tan Shiyuan and received a harsh slap. Reporter Peng had refused to hand over the photo negatives, and now that the photos might be leaked, Tan Shiyuan would also be held responsible. Hearing that this incident was related to Hua Zhen, Tan Shiyuan was very displeased and directly reminded Feng Guangyun that if necessary, he could resolve this problem. Since Hua Liang couldn't control his younger brother, he could act first and report later.
With the support of his superior, Feng Guangyun began investigating Chen Hao. Originally, Chen Hao had been very cautious these past few days, staying at home behind closed doors. However, he was coaxed out by his teammates from the Fourth Team and ended up at their former workplace. It turned out they were having a meal together. Chen Hao was very conflicted, but everyone insisted that Chen Hao stay and eat the reunion meal with them.
Even the precinct chief said it was their last meal together, and after this meal, they wouldn't bother him again. So Chen Hao stayed. Everyone performed their best skills, and while eating and watching the performances, they huddled together, enjoying the warmth and happiness. In the evening, Chen Hao went to the church to study French as usual. When his eyes met Shi Junyu's, the two couldn't help but smile. Shi Junyu's smile was particularly captivating.
Only at this moment was she relaxed; on a daily basis, she lived a life of constant danger. Chen Hao cherished the brief moments of peace. After class, Chen Hao stayed behind to wipe the blackboard and casually asked Shi Junyu when she had learned French.
Shi Junyu said her parents had taken her to live in France for five years, and later she wanted to return to China, so she took a train from Moscow to the Northeast and then came here. This was the first casual conversation between Chen Hao and Shi Junyu outside of conveying tasks from their superiors. He felt that talking with Shi Junyu was very pleasant. Suddenly, the power went out, and the atmosphere around them became ambiguous.
To avoid suspicion, Chen Hao said goodbye and left the classroom. Chen Hao walked to the school gate and turned around to see the teaching building completely dark. Worried that it wasn't safe, he waited at the school gate. Shi Junyu lit a candle, pulled back the curtains, and saw Chen Hao quietly standing guard outside the door. She felt very safe. Two equally sincere patriotic hearts, sharing the same aspirations and ideals, were closely linked.
Reporter Peng finally woke up. Chen Hao, Hua Zhen, and Luo Minmin went to see him together. Reporter Peng said that not long ago, he had investigated and found that Naoki Satomi had served in the Fourth Team of the Kwantung Army and was still carrying out disruptive activities after returning to China. Reporter Peng had taken some photos at the dock.
He personally saw Naoki Satomi and high-ranking officials within the police bureau concealing military supplies and shipping them to Japan. These military supplies were necessities for manufacturing guns, cannons, and bullets. Hua Zhen was very clear about the KMT's initial intention for smuggling these items, but since his brother was involved, he still held onto a glimmer of hope.
Episode 27 Recap
Chen Hao knew Hua Zhen was in a difficult situation, so he thoughtfully advised Hua Zhen not to investigate this matter further, and that he would be responsible for the rest. Luo Minmin had already learned to drive, so she offered to drive herself back to school. At the school gate, learning that Hua Zhen would return to Nanjing the next day, Luo Minmin hugged him from behind, giving him strength.
Even though Hua Liang was involved in this matter, he shouldn't blame himself too much, as it was, after all, his family. That night, Hua Zhen didn't sleep a wink. He thought through the whole matter and came to find Chen Hao early the next morning. He told him he would return and address the 'torpedo' issue. Once he returned to his home in Nanjing, he would continue searching for evidence.
In Hua Liang's room, as long as a transaction existed, proof could be found. Hua Zhen learned that among the military supplies was tungsten ore, a very precious chemical material. China had abundant tungsten ore resources, while Japan was very short of it. Sending these important military resources to Japan would greatly weaken China's fighting capacity. Moreover, if the Kuomintang hadn't provided protection, these resources could not have been openly shipped to Japan. Hua Zhen was extremely indignant.
He was determined to find evidence. As a Chinese person, how could one supply military resources to invaders? It was truly ironic. Seeing that the time was right, Chen Hao couldn't help but confess that the high-ranking officials within the Kuomintang knew about the whole matter but were unwilling to admit it. Chen Hao also mentioned Deng Mingyuan. Previously, because he was unsure of Hua Zhen's stance, he hadn't been frank.
Now, he revealed everything about his relationship with Deng Mingyuan. Actually, he had known about the smuggling when Deng Mingyuan was still alive. At that time, he commented that the Kuomintang government's smuggling behavior was no different from suicide. Deng Mingyuan wanted to build a new world, help the poor common people rise up, and live a happy life from then on. Therefore, Chen Hao also chose the path Deng Mingyuan wanted to take.
Hua Zhen probably guessed Chen Hao's identity. He told Chen Hao the time of his departure and then left. Looking at Hua Zhen's determined back, Chen Hao was very relieved and hoped that Hua Zhen, who was young, promising, and full of patriotic fervor, could become one of them. Wei Daiqing began to intensify his investigation efforts. He investigated many clues related to the National Salvation Association and systematically checked apartments where Communists might be present.
Shi Junyu received the news and immediately used the radio to inform her comrades to be careful. The National Salvation Association was currently in a very dangerous situation, and everyone must be extra cautious. While investigating the National Salvation Association, Wei Daiqing also targeted another underground Communist comrade. Shi Junyu would always pass messages through her. Wei Daiqing then sent people to secretly monitor members of the National Salvation Association.
Once they encountered Hua Zhen, they were to immediately make arrests. Hua Liang had gone to Wusongkou for business. When Hua Zhen returned to his home in Nanjing, he didn't see him. It was a very good opportunity. Hua Zhen immediately went to his brother's room to search for clues. Finally, in the bedside table in his brother's bedroom, he found an important diary. It recorded the amounts and times of transactions with Japan.
Every month, there would be accounting entries of over a hundred thousand, a huge sum. Transactions would occur on the first of every month, and shipping on the sixth. Hua Zhen reported these important clues to Chen Hao by phone. On his way back, Hua Zhen's emotions were fluctuating. He had reported the evidence of his brother's smuggling behavior to the Communist Party. Now he had put his entire family's lives at the forefront of the storm.
But with the mansion about to collapse, how could he, a single pillar, support the entire family and nation? Chen Hao promptly reported the information he received to Shi Junyu. The next day, Hua Zhen was going to Wusongkou, and he was also prepared to go. The situation was becoming increasingly dangerous, and Chen Hao was ready to sacrifice himself at any time.
As long as Hua Zhen wanted to stand with them, he would protect his safety with his life. Late at night, heavy rain poured down. Tian Dongbao had been moving goods at the dock during the day and knew that a large amount of goods was still outside. To perform well and try to get the boss's recognition earlier, Tian Dongbao took his wife to the dock in the heavy rain to cover the goods with waterproof cloth. It was at this moment that he discovered the secret inside the crates.
Episode 28 Recap
When Tian Dongbao took the police exam, he had seen tungsten ore and knew that these pig bristles and tungsten ore were contraband and absolutely could not be smuggled. Thinking of this, he went overnight to the Sixteenth Police Station to report it. Feng Guangyun specifically had him register his address and commended him as an excellent good citizen, asking him to keep it strictly confidential.
After Tian Dongbao left, Feng Guangyun immediately took the smuggled goods Tian Dongbao had brought to the Security Department by car. Tan Shiyuan told him to immediately find a way to get rid of Tian Dongbao. At this time, Feng Guangyun had already investigated Luo Minmin's home address. He had investigated at the hospital and found that Luo Minmin had once taken care of Mrs. Peng. In order to find Mrs.
Peng's whereabouts, Tan Shiyuan did not prevent Feng Guangyun from going to arrest Luo Minmin. Luo Minmin specifically brought fish soup to Tian Dongbao's wife. When she arrived at Tian Dongbao's home, she learned that Tian Dongbao had been missing for several days. Colleagues who had worked with Tian Dongbao said they had gone home several days ago. Luo Minmin took Tian Dongbao's wife to the dock to look for him. She encountered the large black truck head-on.
She had seen this truck several times; each time, she was either being chased or hit by it. Sure enough, the people in the back of the truck recognized her. Luo Minmin saw that someone wanted to chase and kill them, so she quickly pulled Tian Dongbao's wife and ran. Tian Dongbao's wife was also pregnant. Luo Minmin desperately helped her get over the wall, while she herself was caught and abducted by the people chasing them from behind.
Feng Guangyun forced Luo Minmin to reveal Mrs. Peng's whereabouts. Seeing that she stubbornly refused to speak, he locked Luo Minmin in the cold storage compartment in the back of the truck. The temperature was continuously dropping, and she would freeze to death after a while. Feng Guangyun had already locked the door securely. Luo Minmin quickly looked for things inside that could keep her warm and found pig bristles to light for warmth.
Hua Zhen quietly came to Naoki Satomi's cargo dock and saw that they had disguised the military supplies in the warehouse, covering them with a layer of tea leaves. He also personally saw his older brother, Hua Liang, shaking hands with Naoki Satomi. Hua Liang and Tan Shiyuan promised that as long as the price offered by the Japanese side was reasonable, they would have ample opportunities for future cooperation.
This time, Hua Zhen clearly saw that it was his older brother, Hua Liang. He staggered and turned around when he was suddenly knocked unconscious with a large stick. When he woke up, Hua Zhen heard that it was several people working there who had knocked him unconscious. These people asked him what he was doing sneaking around here.
Hua Zhen told them not to call the police and to call Hua Liang over, saying he was Hua Liang's younger brother and there would definitely be a generous reward. When Hua Liang heard that his younger brother had been captured, he rushed over quickly. It was indeed true; his brother had discovered their transaction. Such a meeting was very awkward.
Hua Zhen, however, shed tears and said that he had always considered his older brother his role model, but now it seemed to have overturned his worldview. Hua Zhen tearfully said with pain that Hua Liang was smuggling raw materials for manufacturing bullets to Japan, and then the Japanese were attacking Chinese soldiers, and he himself was a soldier. Hua Liang explained to him that he did all of this for the sake of this family.
Hua Zhen could not forgive him. For the first time in their lives, the two brothers started to fight, but Hua Liang's heavy fist never landed. After calming down for a moment, he earnestly advised Hua Zhen not to act impulsively anymore. As an older brother, he could take a bullet for his younger brother, but he also hoped his younger brother would not be naive anymore. Hua Liang knew that his younger brother had seen through their transaction.
To make him leave quickly, Hua Liang reminded Hua Zhen that Luo Minmin had been captured. If he got in his car and went back to school now, he would find a way to get Luo Minmin out. But if Hua Zhen continued to be stubborn, he would be wasting Luo Minmin's rescue time. On the other side of the warehouse, Luo Minmin was so cold that she was curled up in a ball.
She trembled as she tried to light a match, but her hands were already unresponsive. Hua Zhen was forced into Hua Liang's car. In his heart, he was very anxious about Luo Minmin's situation.
Episode 29 Recap
The matchsticks for warmth were about to run out. Luo Minmin tried her best to stay calm and began to survey her surroundings. She found a handle at the top that seemed to open outwards. So she lit the last matchstick and tried to climb up to twist the handle. She thought she could escape, but suddenly fell heavily.
On the way back, Hua Zhen claimed he needed to go to the restroom, then took advantage of his subordinate's inattentiveness to quietly snatch the car and quickly return. Feng Guangyun interrogated Luo Minmin again, asking her where she had taken Mrs. Peng that day. Luo Minmin insisted she didn't know and also refused Feng Guangyun's advice to call Hua Zhen and tell him to go back.
No matter how Feng Guangyun threatened or enticed her, Luo Minmin just firmly stated that Hua Zhen had already returned to Nanjing and could not possibly turn back to Shanghai to save her now. Luo Minmin cut off all her escape routes, and Feng Guangyun threw her into the cold storage again. Hua Zhen quickly drove back to Erbai's place. At this time, several colleagues from the Fourth Team were there.
They told Hua Zhen that something had happened and Dongbao hadn't returned for several days. Hua Zhen then coordinated with Erbai and the others, working from inside and outside, to get to the aquatic product company. The aquatic product company was heavily guarded, and usually no rooms had lights on at night, but now it was brightly lit, showing that someone must have been captured. Hua Zhen searched room by room.
At this time, Luo Minmin, with her tenacious will, climbed up to the skylight again and finally escaped to another cold storage compartment. She discovered Tian Dongbao lying motionless on the ground. Luo Minmin knew that Tian Dongbao had learned about the smuggling incident, so she shouted Tian Dongbao's name, but there was no response for a long time. Dongbao had already lost his breath. Luo Minmin desperately pounded on the door, wanting to try and save Dongbao's life.
Just then, Hua Zhen heard Luo Minmin's cry for help. Hua Zhen opened the door. Luo Minmin cried and rushed into his arms. Hua Zhen carefully checked on Dongbao, but it was already too late to save him. By this time, Feng Guangyun had already led his men to the aquatic product company. Hua Zhen had a gun and his combat ability was online, but Luo Minmin had become exhausted and fainted. Fortunately, Chen Hao was also there.
He heard that the Sixteenth Bureau had dispatched officers overnight, and it seemed he heard Xiang Yuansheng's name, so he knew something was wrong. He quietly followed them to the aquatic product company, took a great risk, forcibly took a police car, and called out to Hua Zhen to help lift Luo Minmin into the car together. Seeing that they were about to escape, Feng Guangyun aimed his sights at Hua Zhen.
Chen Hao struggled to drive the car, trying to break through the encirclement. A bullet hit Chen Hao. He didn't make a sound and kept driving the car until they reached a temporarily safe place. Hua Zhen transferred Luo Minmin and Chen Hao to his own car, saw that Chen Hao had blood on him, and immediately stepped on the gas pedal to find a pharmacy.
Feng Guangyun ordered all local hospitals and pharmacies to be notified that any discovery of gunshot victims or frostbite patients must be reported. Hua Zhen went to a pharmacy to buy gauze, disinfectant alcohol, and medicine for frostbite. However, because antibiotics were extremely scarce, Hua Zhen pawned a watch from his wrist to the pharmacy owner.
The pharmacy owner promised to look for it on the black market and told him to come back the next day at noon to pick it up. When Luo Minmin woke up, she saw Chen Hao unconscious in the back seat of the car. Hua Zhen was by the car, making a fire to help them warm up.
After some time, Chen Hao woke up and was very sad to learn that Dongbao had been frozen to death by Feng Guangyun. Everyone was reminiscing about the moments they shared with Dongbao. Not long ago, Dongbao had happily announced that he was going to be a father, and in the blink of an eye, they were separated by life and death. This was the first police officer from the Fourth Team to sacrifice his life. That night, the three of them were exceptionally sad.
Episode 30 Recap
Feng Guangyun shot. He was very scared afterwards. Hua Zhen was the son of the Vice Minister of Military and Political Affairs. If he had been shot, Hua Liang and his father would not have let him off lightly. Now Feng Guangyun extremely resented Chen Hao. He hadn't trusted him from the start, and it was Chen Hao who ruined things in the end.
If it hadn't been for Chen Hao's help that night, Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin would have already fallen into Feng Guangyun's hands. Feng Guangyun immediately decided to frame Chen Hao as the murderer of Tian Dongbao and post his portrait all over the streets. The bullet inside Chen Hao's body had not yet been removed. After a night passed, he started having a high fever, and the wound already showed signs of inflammation.
The streets had been completely sealed off. Hua Zhen wanted to drive to the Jiangnan Shipyard again, but just as he reached the entrance, the patrolling sentry looked at his identification and immediately became suspicious. Hua Zhen drove out quickly. The car passed by Luo Minmin's house and found that the police from the Sixteenth Bureau were investigating at her house.
They also instructed Luo Minmin's father and Luo Qinqin to immediately report to the police station once they found Luo Minmin. Luo Minmin was in tears. Her home was also being harassed by the Public Security Bureau, and the streets were no longer safe. Hua Zhen continued driving Chen Hao and Luo Minmin towards the suburbs.
Feng Guangyun investigated and found that Hua Zhen had gone to a pharmacy the night before last to buy sulfonamide powder, concluding that Chen Hao was injured. He began to act without fear. As long as Chen Hao was put on the list of criminals, he would likely not be able to clear himself. Now all pharmacies had been notified, and as soon as Chen Hao appeared, he could immediately issue the arrest plan.
Shi Junyu received an arrest warrant from the police station at the International Settlement Administration. Seeing Chen Hao's photo, Shi Junyu became very anxious. Immediately after work, she changed into plain clothes and went to a tailor shop to meet with her underground colleagues to inform the organization about Chen Hao. At this time, the spy Wei Daiqing had planted in the tailor shop also noticed Shi Junyu. Not long after, Wei Daiqing came to this tailor shop.
Shi Junyu delivered the message to her underground colleagues. The organization asked her to immediately return to the International Settlement Administration. Now Chen Hao and Hua Zhen definitely needed her help; this was the last place they could find assistance. Wei Daiqing deliberately pretended to meet her by chance at the tailor shop and even offered to drive Shi Junyu back to the International Settlement Administration.
Shi Junyu naturally knew Wei Daiqing was not a good person, but to avoid arousing suspicion, she calmly got into his car nonetheless. Wei Daiqing asked this and that along the way. He also asked Shi Junyu why she had walked for half an hour to come to this remote tailor shop and if she was very familiar with the tailor shop owner. Shi Junyu conversed calmly and naturally, answering questions flawlessly. It was late at night.
Hua Zhen searched everywhere but could not find sulfonamide powder. Chen Hao was still having a fever, and he was very anxious. While Luo Minmin went to look for water, Chen Hao asked Hua Zhen to help him out of the car for some fresh air. This journey ahead was full of danger, and Chen Hao didn't know if he could escape safely, so he revealed his true identity.
Through his experiences during this period, Hua Zhen saw the corruption within the Kuomintang and no longer had hope for them. Recalling the earnest teachings Deng Mingyuan had given him, he voluntarily joined the organization Chen Hao belonged to. Chen Hao was very relieved to hear this. He knew Hua Zhen was very capable, had noble revolutionary beliefs, and would definitely be able to achieve something.
Although his body was very weak, that night, Chen Hao and Hua Zhen were filled with strength. Chen Hao's body was very weak. Hua Zhen had to go to the place Chen Hao told him about, the National Salvation Association, to look for the sulfonamide powder he wanted. Unfortunately, apart from some cold medicine for treating typhoid, there was nothing he needed at all.
In a desperate situation, Hua Zhen thought of Shi Junyu, with whom he had met a few times, and tried calling her. Since learning that Chen Hao was injured, Shi Junyu had been staying by the phone at the International Settlement Administration, not leaving it for a step. Finally receiving Hua Zhen's call, a weight was lifted from her heart, and she told him how to get help.
Shi Junyu walked out of the rented place of the National Salvation Association, which also attracted the attention of the spy. They quietly followed her. Shi Junyu went to the tailor shop again to ask her comrades to meet Hua Zhen. The tailor shop was no longer safe, so the underground comrades tried hard to shake off the tails and rushed to the agreed location for the rescue.
Episode 31 Recap
Hua Zhen brought Chen Hao to the place Shi Junyu mentioned. The underground comrades also rushed over to help Chen Hao remove the bullet from his body. This was just a study room. Without delay, the four people discussed escaping through the back door. Just then, there was a knock at the door. Hua Zhen realized something was wrong, so he asked Luo Minmin and the others to hide temporarily while he went out to distract them.
It was Wei Daiqing who had arrived. Hearing the tip from his subordinate, he immediately followed the car to this location. Wei Daiqing was clearly prepared. Seeing Hua Zhen alone in a large study, he suspiciously began knocking on the walls, trying to find their hiding place. Hua Zhen was very nervous. Just as Wei Daiqing was about to find Luo Minmin and their hiding place, he immediately suggested that he would go with Wei Daiqing to the Secret Service.
Wei Daiqing sensed Hua Zhen's nervousness. The two were in a standoff when Hua Zhen saw Feng Guangyun's men also chasing them not far away. Without missing a beat, he immediately fired a shot into the air. At this moment, the killer hired by Feng Guangyun immediately became highly alert, while Wei Daiqing's side thought the Communists had come to rescue Hua Zhen and quickly fired at them. Hua Zhen took advantage of the chaos to sneak out.
Wei Daiqing pursued closely, and the two faced off with guns. Wei Daiqing forced Hua Zhen to surrender. At this critical moment, Shi Junyu drove over and rescued Hua Zhen. Shi Junyu took Hua Zhen to a safe civilian house. Luo Minmin and Chen Hao were already there. While helping Chen Hao clean his wound, the underground comrade told Shi Junyu that there were actually remaining bullet fragments in Chen Hao's body.
Medical conditions were simple now, making it impossible to remove all the fragmented bullets, which would affect Chen Hao for the rest of his life. Revolution required sacrifice; they had long been mentally prepared for this, but upon hearing this news, Shi Junyu was still very sad. Chen Hao reported to the organization that Hua Zhen was willing to join them. The identity of the tailor shop owner had been exposed and she could no longer go back there.
Shi Junyu gave her a new identity and asked her to evacuate from Shanghai as soon as possible. The tailor shop owner, upon seeing the name on the identification card, was filled with emotion. She had always lived under a false name, ready to complete the tasks assigned by the organization at any time. Now, she had finally completed her mission in Shanghai.
Receiving the new document, the underground comrade knew she had to continue moving forward, and new tasks and challenges awaited her. Wei Daiqing had already found the tailor shop. They had gone to the bookstore at 4 PM, and the tailor shop owner had disappeared around 3 PM, a time that perfectly matched. Wei Daiqing ordered an immediate search of all docks and stations.
As soon as they saw the tailor shop owner, the arrest plan was to be implemented immediately. After several days of rushing about, Luo Minmin was exhausted. She had just been talking to Hua Zhen and fell asleep in the blink of an eye. To make it easier to take care of Chen Hao, Hua Zhen made a makeshift bed on the floor beside him. Chen Hao woke up and spoke a few words with him.
After a while, Luo Minmin also came in and told Chen Hao about the entire rescue process that happened during the day, including the tacit understanding and decisiveness between the tailor shop owner and Shi Junyu. The two remained calm and orderly in moments of crisis and made decisions very decisively. Before this, Luo Minmin had never seen girls like them, so heroic and spirited. She admired them very much and hoped to become like them one day.
Chen Hao smiled and nodded upon hearing her aspiration. As long as she had an idea and put it into action, it would come true one day. That night, the tailor shop owner, Mrs. Ji, was arrested at the dock. Shi Junyu used the radio to report the news to her superior, recalling the process of meeting and interacting with Mrs. Ji. Shi Junyu wept silently. Usually, she was decisive and never weak, but upon hearing the news that her comrade had been arrested, she couldn't help but shed tears.
Episode 32 Recap
Late at night, Wei Daiqing showed up at Shi Junyu's house uninvited. He rummaged through everything in the room. Shi Junyu warned him repeatedly that if there was anything, he could go to the French Concession Bureau for an open investigation tomorrow, but Wei Daiqing remained arrogant and aggressive, picking up the pajamas on the sofa and asking Shi Junyu if she had any connection with the tailor shop owner.
Shi Junyu tried to call her guard, but Wei Daiqing forcibly hung up the phone. Wei Daiqing insisted that it was Shi Junyu who had saved Hua Zhen and Chen Hao that day, and that she had fired at the rear of the vehicle at the time. Now Wei Daiqing insisted on seeing the car Shi Junyu drove. If he wasn't shown the car, Wei Daiqing wouldn't give up.
Shi Junyu calmly walked downstairs and took him to see the car. The rear of the car was undamaged, with no signs of collision. Wei Daiqing was very surprised and could no longer question Shi Junyu aggressively. Without evidence, he had to give up for now. Shi Junyu walked up the stairs, and through the curtains, she quietly watched Wei Daiqing's movements.
Wei Daiqing still didn't give up, and was stroking the rear bumper of the car nearby, trying to prove if the car had been recently repainted to cover up traces. When Chen Hao felt better, he would look at the stars above the roof with Hua Zhen and Luo Minmin. The sky was vast and tranquil, and with the stars, everything was full of life and yearning.
Hua Zhen's state of mind was very different from when he first started university. The time before dawn is the darkest. They had confidence and could strongly endure through it. There were three days left until the smuggled cargo ship departed. At a new book launch for a writer, Reporter Peng suddenly appeared and announced to the reporters his investigation from the past few days, including the smuggling of military supplies.
The National Salvation Association asked him to directly point the finger at Feng Guangyun. Soon reporters swarmed towards the Sixteen Police Station, all wanting to interview Feng Guangyun, asking about the whole story. The streets were filled with protest marches, and the public loudly denounced Feng Guangyun's despicable actions. Feng Guangyun was startled. The crime of smuggling military supplies was no small matter. He was clearly just running errands, how could he be involved in such a large smuggling business.
The more Feng Guangyun thought about it, the more scared he became, and he quickly went to his superior, Tan Shiyuan, to ask how to handle the aftermath. Tan Shiyuan was an old fox. He tried hard to appease Feng Guangyun's emotions and told him to go back and avoid the limelight for now, using a temporary suspension to fool others.
Although he knew he was a scapegoat, Feng Guangyun had no other choice but to go home and wait for news. There was only one day left until the smuggled cargo ship departed. On this day, Chen Hao changed the dressing on his wound. He told Hua Zhen that after careful consideration, the organization had agreed for Hua Zhen to join them. Hearing this news, Hua Zhen was very excited.
He could finally become the kind of person his teacher was. Deng Mingyuan had once said that only by standing on the right side could one do things beneficial to the country and the people. Thinking that the tasks in the coming days were very dangerous, Chen Hao and Hua Zhen advised Luo Minmin to go home first. Luo Minmin wanted to act with them.
Chen Hao comforted her, saying that to become like Shi Junyu, she must first obey orders. Luo Zhongning and Luo Qinqin had been worrying at home. The eldest daughter hadn't returned home for several days. Now that she had become an arrest target, people were even more uneasy. Suddenly seeing Luo Minmin return, they surrounded her in surprise. Luo Zhongning finally managed to eat a mouthful of rice and felt relieved at last.
Luo Minmin told her father about her experiences of the past few days. Her father had always been worried about her safety. Now Luo Minmin felt that her life was very fulfilling, especially seeing people like Chen Hao and Hua Zhen who had ideals and ambitions. She became even more resolute about the path she wanted to take, yearning to have a firm revolutionary belief like Chen Hao, no longer lost, no longer weakly hiding behind her father.
Luo Zhongning knew his child had grown up, and many things were destined to be unstoppable. Luo Zhongning could only relive the feeling of protecting them, just like when he carried them on his back when they were young. That night, the family happily took a family photo. Feng Guangyun was dismissed from his post.
Fearing that his superior would abandon him after using him, he quietly took out his gun and went to the aquatic products company, wanting to get back his pass. With the pass, he could escape anywhere.
Episode 33 Recap
Feng Guangyun got the pass and was just about to flee when Hua Zhen and Chen Hao, like orioles behind a mantis, already had guns to his head, forcing Feng Guangyun into the car for negotiations. Feng Guangyun was aware of the current situation and knew his position was precarious.
Chen Hao reminded him that Tan Shiyuan suspending him was just a facade and that he was very likely to be blamed for all the crimes of treason and collusion with the enemy. Not only that, but in a few days, he would be silenced completely. Feng Guangyun naturally knew Tan Shiyuan's character. Only by cooperating with Hua Zhen and the others could he get a chance to survive.
Hua Zhen promised him that as long as he cooperated in exposing Naoki Satomi's crimes, he would be tried in Nanjing. Since Nanjing was the Hua family's territory, it would be simple for Feng Guangyun to survive. Feng Guangyun agreed to cooperate. Just as he got out of the car and walked five meters away, countless gunshots rang out behind him, and Feng Guangyun fell to the ground dead. At this moment, several cars gathered, their firepower very strong.
Hua Zhen handed the smuggling evidence to Chen Hao and covered him so he could leave quickly. Hua Zhen stood in front alone, and finally, when his bullets ran out, he was forced to surrender. Chen Hao, even with his gunshot wound not yet healed, engaged in another fight. Countless thugs shot at Chen Hao. Chen Hao narrowly escaped death, desperately protecting the pass. He fell from the building with the thugs.
After some time, Chen Hao woke up and still struggled to crawl to the agreed location. Shi Junyu was already waiting there. Seeing his many injuries, she was heartbroken and urged him to hold on, emphasizing that completing the mission was important. Chen Hao gave the pass in his hand to Hua Zhen and told him to leave quickly. Hua Zhen was originally captured by the Fuxing Society.
When he saw his brother come out with his watch, he understood that the Fuxing Society was founded by Hua Liang. Indeed, Hua Liang stated that he established this organization to eliminate the Communists around Hua Zhen and also to protect his younger brother by chance. Now, Hua Liang wanted to immediately take Hua Zhen back to Nanjing because the cargo on the dock had gotten the pass and would be leaving the port soon.
Hua Zhen remembered the time for the printing house. There were still thirty minutes left. He struggled to grab the steering wheel, and the car swerved wildly on the small road, finally crashing into a tree and being forced to stop. After regaining consciousness, Hua Zhen found the pass list in Hua Liang's pocket. Time was urgent, so he quickly went back to find Chen Hao. Hua Liang had found his younger brother and eliminated most of the Communists.
To avoid further complications, he quickly disbanded the Fuxing Society. When Wei Daiqing went to work again, he saw many people moving things in the office building and was greatly surprised to hear that the company was liberated. He probably would never believe that the Fuxing Society was founded by Hua Liang, having been a pawn for so long.
Wei Daiqing thought the evidence he found was insufficient, so he searched everywhere for repair shops, trying to find the car Shi Junyu was in when it was shot, and then find where Hua Zhen and the others were hiding. Hua Zhen ran to the farmhouse courtyard and into the house but did not see Chen Hao. Suddenly, Wei Daiqing pointed a gun at him.
At this moment, Wei Daiqing thought he had all the evidence to prove that Hua Zhen was a member of the Communist Party. Hua Zhen looked at his watch, feeling he had no time to waste with him. He reminded Wei Daiqing that the reason he always lost was because he couldn't distinguish between good and evil, only wanting to climb up, losing his basic human faith. The two shot at each other.
Wei Daiqing was shot dead, while Hua Zhen was fortunately only shot in the abdomen. He staggered, holding the key evidence, and ran to the printing house.
Episode 34 (Ending) Recap
Luo Minmin received a letter at home telling her to hurry back to the small courtyard. After Luo Minmin rushed there, she helped the unconscious Chen Hao into a car and took him to the underground Party comrade according to the address on the letter. The underground Party comrade promised to definitely save Chen Hao. After Hua Zhen woke up, he found himself lying in Luo Minmin's home. Luo Qinqin and Luo Zhongning had been taking care of him.
They told Hua Zhen that a middle-aged woman brought him there at noon, and the bullets in his body had been removed. He could recover with a little rest and recuperation. When Luo Minmin returned home, she saw Hua Zhen lying weakly on the bed and thought of Chen Hao being sent away just now. Feeling a mix of emotions, she held Hua Zhen's hand, her eyes welling up.
Thanks to the combined efforts of Hua Zhen and Chen Hao, the newspaper quickly exposed the smuggling case. The Shinsei Maru was impounded, and the people of the country denounced the despicable behavior of Qixiang Domestic Products Joint Company. Tan Shiyuan and the Japanese Naoki Satomi's collusion in smuggling was naturally an unforgivable crime. Many patriots took to the streets one after another, starting protests and hoping the government would severely punish them.
Hua Liang was held accountable by Qixiang Domestic Products. He did not flinch, and although he was willing to act as a scapegoat, he solemnly proposed that the Hua family would always have a place at the negotiation table. Before long, Hua Zhen arrived at the meeting location and met the liaison - Shi Junyu. Shi Junyu nodded in greeting.
Now the two were comrades on the same path and would cooperate frequently in the future to complete the tasks assigned by the organization. Shi Junyu also introduced a new comrade to him. Hua Zhen looked over upon hearing the sound and saw it was Luo Minmin!
Chen Hao had submitted an application to the organization, and now the organization also agreed for Luo Minmin to become a member of the CCP underground Party's Shanghai group, continuing the unfinished cause in Shanghai just like Hua Zhen. The people from the Fourth Research Institute gathered together again. This time, Luo Zhongning also joined them and started working in the kitchen with the head of the institute. It was a long-awaited reunion, and they cherished each other.
Hua Zhen was about to leave Shanghai for a new mission. Luo Minmin asked him when he would depart. Luo Zhongning called everyone to eat together. Bai Shoujun said that he also wanted to join the National Salvation Association and do meaningful things like Hua Zhen. Luo Minmin's brother also decided to go with Bai Shoujun. After being tempered during this period, everyone had become much stronger. Tian Dongbao's wife was also there.
Everyone suggested that she open a tailor shop near Luo Minmin's home after giving birth so they could look after her in the future. In short, they would definitely take care of her and her child. Tian Dongbao must be watching from heaven and feel at peace. Shi Junyu was worried about Chen Hao and finally received news from her contact. Chen Hao was recovering. Although there were after-effects from the gunshot wound, he remained very optimistic.
Chen Hao wrote Shi Junyu a letter in French. Shi Junyu kept it with her and read it many times. As she described, although Chen Hao was not in Shanghai, they felt very close to each other. The same mission and belief gave her more courage and strength. Luo Minmin went to see Hua Zhen off. Now neither Shanghai nor Nanjing was a safe place.
Although Luo Minmin was very reluctant to part, she still advised him not to come back again. She also said that she would take over the mission of Mrs. Ji from the tailor shop and try to make the photo studio a new information transfer station. At this moment, Luo Minmin was no longer that weak and naive young girl. Hua Zhen knew the mission he carried.
The road ahead was long and full of danger, and he couldn't bear to hold Luo Minmin back. But when Luo Minmin heard him recite a short revolutionary poem, she responded tearfully that she would always wait for him in Shanghai. The two embraced, and at this moment of parting, it felt like they were heading to the ends of the earth. Before long, Hua Zhen continued to carry out missions in Guangzhou.
Before this summer arrived, he had been somewhat bewildered, doing what his family thought was right in a step-by-step manner. However, after experiencing some things, he became increasingly determined, seeing things clearly, and making the right choices at critical junctures in his life. His life now had direction. A month later, Luo Qinqin also took the hospital exam. Luo Minmin truly turned the photo studio into an information transfer station.
Shi Junyu often patronized the place, while reminding Luo Minmin to pay attention to relaxing. Luo Minmin grew very quickly. Meanwhile, Hua Zhen, over in Guangzhou, also met the recovering Chen Hao. He believed that the motherland would surely achieve a new lease on life because of the persistence of these determined individuals.
