Following his growing suspicions about Man Yao, Wu You questioned Wu Yu about past monitoring efforts. Wu Yu admitted to keeping an eye on Man Yao, especially outside the Moon Embrace Teahouse and the House of Fragrance, due to Wu You's earlier concerns. Despite the surveillance, Wu Yu had found nothing amiss, though he noted Man Yao possessed martial arts skills and was from Western Qi.
Meanwhile, at her father's behest, Miss Ya Li, daughter of Sir Sun, the Central Secretary, visited the Rare Item Chamber within the Moon Embrace Teahouse. She was tasked with selecting unique treasures to decorate the manor in preparation for a visit from Prince Li. Captivated by a newly crafted pair of icy jadeite cups, she purchased them. As she prepared to leave, Wu You arrived, seeking Man Yao.
Upon learning from a servant that Man Yao was with General Fu Chou, a vexed Wu You impulsively invited Miss Ya Li to join them for tea. In the tearoom, Wu You greeted Fu Chou with thinly veiled sarcasm. Fu Chou politely offered to depart, but Wu You insisted he stay, introducing Miss Ya Li, whose interest was visibly piqued upon seeing the General.
The atmosphere grew tense as Wu You subtly warned Fu Chou, though the General humbly deflected, claiming ignorance of refined activities like tea appreciation. Fu Chou shared his insight that tea, like life, holds sweetness after its initial bitterness—a flavor only understood through experience. Wu You countered, implying Fu Chou had not truly understood life's flavors. Ya Li commented that the tea had a "sour bite" that suited her mood.
The tension culminated when Wu You warned Fu Chou to be careful with his actions if he had taken a fancy to things that Wu You liked. Fu Chou calmly responded that matters of the heart were subject to fate. Shortly after, Ya Li feigned clumsiness, spilling tea and claiming to feel unwell to excuse herself. Wu You promptly suggested Fu Chou escort her home.
Once alone with Man Yao, Wu You directly warned her to distance herself from the "complicated" Fu Chou. Man Yao retorted that Wu You himself was far more unfathomable. Outside the teahouse, Ya Li thanked Fu Chou, revealing that two years prior, he had saved her life during a battle in her hometown. Fu Chou, having forgotten the incident, humbly dismissed his actions as a mere helping hand, slightly embarrassed that she still remembered.
Back at the Princess Manor, Wu Yu and Princess Zhao Yun arrived to visit Princess Rong Le. To maintain the ruse, Ling Yue impersonated the princess, wearing a mask and feigning illness to speak little, while Xiao managed the situation. Dissatisfied with the manor's tea, Zhao Yun insisted they all go to the Moon Embrace Teahouse. Despite Xiao's attempts to refuse by citing the princess's flu, Ling Yue, fearing exposure, eventually agreed.
At the teahouse, they found Wu You and Man Yao engaged in a game of chess. Wu Yu, curious, attempted to remove Ling Yue's mask but was stopped by Xiao. Ling Yue, in her role as the princess, sternly stated that according to Western Qi custom, only a groom could remove her mask. A chastened Wu Yu apologized, and Wu You apologized on his brother's behalf.
Ling Yue, still in character, then feigned anger at Wu You's familiar demeanor with Man Yao, accused them of trying to embarrass her, and left with Xiao. Princess Zhao Yun, eager to foster a connection between Wu You and Rong Le, looked on with concern. Later, observing his brother's dejected mood after Man Yao's departure, Wu Yu mused on the bewildering nature of love.
He was now convinced that Princess Rong Le and Man Yao could not be the same person, contrasting the "spoiled and wilful" princess with the "pleasant-looking" and "sophisticated" Man Yao. He concluded that Wu You's attempt to test Man Yao had backfired, alienating both women. Rong Le received a letter, delivered by kite, from her brother, Emperor Rong Qi, announcing his imminent visit to Northern Lin within ten days.
Overjoyed, she confided in Ling Yue, who cautioned her to be extra vigilant around Wu You to avoid exposing her true identity. The Emperor of Northern Lin was pleased to receive a letter of credence from Western Qi confirming Emperor Rong Qi's personal visit to sign a treaty. This alliance would secure Northern Lin's position for the upcoming war against Wei. However, he remained troubled by the unresolved marriage alliance.
He instructed his brother, Wu You's uncle, to press Wu You to accept the marriage for the sake of the greater good. Should Wu You remain unyielding, the emperor suggested they consider Wu Yu. Wu You's uncle conveyed this to him, but Wu You adamantly refused, declaring that neither he nor Wu Yu would allow their marriages to be used as bargaining chips.
He criticized the use of personal feelings for political gain and refused to be unfaithful like his father. His uncle also revealed a contingency plan to send Wu You and Sir Sun to the Southern region if the war with Wei faltered. Meanwhile, after learning of Fu Chou's meeting with Wu You, the Crown Prince attempted to curry favor by sending him a valuable sword and a letter.
However, Fu Chou showed no interest, his attention solely fixed on Emperor Rong Qi's impending arrival. In her residence, a joyful Rong Le was engrossed in wood-carving, anticipating her brother's arrival. Princess Zhao Yun visited, expressing surprise at her happiness. Rong Le shared her deep bond with Rong Qi, her only sibling. As Zhao Yun examined Rong Le's carving, she noted its striking resemblance to Wu You rather than Rong Qi.
Emperor Rong Qi arrived in Northern Lin and, after a formal welcome banquet, visited Rong Le at her manor that evening. Rong Le rushed to embrace him, and they expressed how much they had missed each other. He noted she had grown thinner but was glad she looked well. Rong Le then whispered that she was "just one step away" from locating "The Book of Mountains and Rivers."
Rong Qi, however, emphasized that her safety was paramount, promising that one day, he would ensure she was free to live as she pleased and marry whomever she chose. In turn, Rong Le vowed to uphold her promises to him.
