Ye Zhao is tasked by her sister-in-law to embroider a phoenix on her wedding gown, a task she finds impossible due to her poor needlework. Hu Qing, secretly in love with Ye Zhao, sees her distress and tries to surprise her with a beautiful wedding dress he prepared. Ye Zhao, mistaking him for an attacker, almost strikes him before recognizing him. Ye Zhao is delighted by the gown and tries it on, asking Hu Qing if she looks good.
Hu Qing, deeply enamored, affirms her beauty. Ye Zhao invites Hu Qing to drink. They share a joyful time. Afterwards, Hu Qing returns to his dwelling, deeply saddened by his beloved's impending marriage, drowning his sorrows in wine and poetry. On the wedding day, Chang'an is bustling. The dowry for Ye Zhao is immense, comprising contributions from the Ye family, the Emperor, the Empress Dowager, and various nobles.
At the Prince's Mansion, Zhao Yujin is solely focused on escaping his unwanted marriage. Overhearing people mockingly comment on his beauty complementing Ye Zhao's talent, he is infuriated. Using the excuse of needing to relieve himself, Zhao Yujin attempts his escape. He has pre-arranged assistance: Liu Long prepares tranquilizers for guards, Zhang Gui provides a ladder, and Guo Yuanjing uses a cuckoo call as a signal.
With the help of his concubines forming a human ladder, Zhao Yujin manages to climb over the wall, believing his escape successful. In her sedan chair, Ye Zhao senses something amiss. She dispatches Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua to investigate. The sisters find Zhao Yujin attempting to flee and, without hesitation, apprehend him, dragging him back to the mansion for the wedding ceremony. Ye Zhao's procession arrives. She disembarks, seemingly unfazed by the onlookers, and walks directly to the altar.
Zhao Yujin is unwillingly brought before her. Just as the ceremony is about to begin, the Emperor and Empress arrive. Zhao Yujin immediately protests the marriage to the Emperor, only to be sternly reprimanded and threatened with execution if he refuses. Zhao Yujin reluctantly agrees to proceed. Ye Zhao's grandfather, the Town Protector, causes a stir by playfully referring to Ye Zhao as his "grandson" and Zhao Yujin as his "granddaughter-in-law," even humorously touching Zhao Yujin's belly.
Despite Zhao Yujin's renewed protests and the Emperor's warnings, the ceremony proceeds under imperial witness, formalizing the union. Later that night, Zhao Yujin is unhappily forced into the bridal chamber by Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua. Upon entering, he finds the room filled with an array of weapons, which displeases him greatly. Zhao Yujin confronts Ye Zhao, who is sitting by the bed, declaring that he only considers her a "decoration" and intends to spend the night elsewhere.
Ye Zhao is visibly saddened as he leaves. Zhao Yujin attempts to find solace with his concubines, but they all refuse him, fearing Ye Zhao's wrath. With nowhere else to go, Zhao Yujin seeks refuge in his study. He even tries to send a servant for a pillow and blanket, but the servant flees in terror. While Zhao Yujin sits brooding in the study, Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua deliver bedding, taking the opportunity to mock him. Suddenly, Ye Zhao enters the study, signaling for Qiu Shui and Qiu Hua to leave.
