Love Like White Jade Recap
Episode 1 Recap
The Lang Ya Pavilion, a distinguished organization for high-end maids, takes on the crucial responsibility of cultivating young masters into pillars of society. The maids trained within its walls are renowned for their exceptional intellect, martial arts prowess, and extensive knowledge. In Chong'an City, a household's social standing is often gauged by the number of Lang Ya maids it employs.
Pavilion Matron Qiu Hai Tang oversaw a rigorous competition where several maids navigated obstacle courses, including passing through plum blossom stakes amidst a hail of arrows and crossing a precarious single-plank bridge. In the final stage, maids Shui Wuxia and Qi Delong arrived simultaneously before three Senior Sisters. Their task was to select one of three chests containing a pearl, a test that had already begun the moment they arrived.
Qi Delong, relying on logic, concluded that if only one Senior Sister was telling the truth, the pearl should be in the blue chest. However, upon opening it, she found nothing. Shui Wuxia, observing more closely, realized that the Senior Sister who always spoke the truth had mentioned the test began upon their arrival, implying the statement "the pearl is among these three chests" was a lie.
She then noticed that the truth-telling Senior Sister had picked up her teacup but had not taken a sip. Deduced that the pearl was hidden inside the teacup, Shui Wuxia lifted the lid, revealing the pearl and securing her victory. Following the competition's ranking, Pavilion Matron Qiu Hai Tang announced the assignments: Shui Wuxia would mentor Jiang Tianling, the Jiang family's younger son, while Qi Delong would be assigned to Jiang Baiyu, the elder son.
Chong'an City was a thriving hub, and the Jiang family was highly esteemed in the medical field. Qi Delong, displeased with her loss and assignment, voiced her concerns to the Matron, describing Jiang Baiyu as a notorious ruffian who despised learning, a stark contrast to the diligent Jiang Tianling. The Matron, however, insisted that despite his frivolous facade, Jiang Baiyu was cunning and talented, believing he could become as capable as his younger counterpart with the right guidance.
She stressed the maids' duty to transform the young masters into worthy individuals. Qi Delong opted to travel to Chong'an alone by carriage, challenging Shui Wuxia that her assignment didn't guarantee success. As Qi Delong departed, she inadvertently dropped her name tag, which Shui Wuxia picked up. Meanwhile, Jiang Hu and his subordinate Fang Yun Cheng arrived at Lantern Boudoir, searching for Jiang Baiyu.
Zhe Zhi, the proprietress, skillfully intercepted them, claiming Jiang Baiyu was timid and wouldn't dare stay in such a crowded place due to a recent contagion. Inside, a storyteller was captivating the audience with tales of the heroic young swordsman Shen Qingli. Zhe Zhi explained that the famous Jude Auction House had rented her establishment for the day to rehearse for an upcoming auction of a valuable item.
Jiang Hu, though initially curious about the treasure, ultimately decided against waiting, reasoning that the arrival of a Lang Ya maid would soon set his nephew straight. After Jiang Hu left, Zhe Zhi entered a private room where Jiang Baiyu was being entertained by women. Jiang Baiyu complained that his days of leisure were numbered, as he anticipated the arrival of his Lang Ya maid, whom he referred to as a "vicious beast in human skin" named Qi Delong.
He expressed his intention to attend the auction later, noting the abundance of treasures available. Shui Wuxia, after arriving in Chong'an City and buying some pear soup, overheard locals discussing the Jiang family's lavish reception for the new Lang Ya maids. Soon after, she spotted a promotional flyer for the "Golden Phoenix Pin" auction at Lantern Boudoir and immediately recognized it as belonging to her deceased brother, an item he cherished and carried everywhere.
Determined to retrieve it, Shui Wuxia disguised herself as a man and entered the auction. She sat down in a seemingly vacant seat, only to be confronted by Jiang Baiyu, who claimed the seat was reserved for Young Master Zhao of Shan Ye Pharmacy. Shui Wuxia fabricated a story, pretending to be Zhao's friend.
However, Jiang Baiyu, with keen observation, saw through her disguise, pointing out her dark circles, shaky Adam's apple, and the damp fragrant powder on her sleeves, suggesting she had spent more than a day in a brothel and was a mere pretender. Shui Wuxia retorted, accusing him of being the real pretender. Jiang Baiyu then had the surrounding crowd confirm his identity as "Chong'an's most foolish prodigal son" before boldly tearing off her fake mustache, exposing her true gender.
The Golden Phoenix Pin, described as an exquisitely crafted medical instrument made of flawless white jade, was then presented. A fierce bidding war ensued, with prices soaring from 1,000 to 6,000 taels. Ultimately, Jiang Baiyu won the coveted item. Shui Wuxia pursued Jiang Baiyu, pleading to simply get a glimpse of the Golden Phoenix Pin, arguing that she had contributed to raising its price. Jiang Baiyu, however, defiantly refused and locked her out of the room.
Undeterred, Shui Wuxia kicked down the door and continued to struggle with him for the pin. Their altercation was abruptly interrupted by a group of masked black-clad men who stormed in, demanding the treasure. Shui Wuxia bravely fought the assailants alone until Shen Qingli, the legendary swordsman, dramatically intervened. Together, they fended off the attackers. As the black-clad men retreated, Shui Wuxia chased after one who dropped an item, but she failed to catch him.
Shen Qingli caught up to her, returned the dropped item, which was Qi Delong's name tag, and noticing her torn sleeve, thoughtfully draped his cloak over her shoulders before departing. Later, in a secluded setting, Shen Qingli removed his mask, revealing himself to be Jiang Baiyu.
He recalled that seven years prior, he had gotten into trouble while investigating a case, and someone had advised him to adopt a facade of foolishness and use the alias Shen Qingli to continue his investigation in secret. After this, Jiang Baiyu returned to the Jiang Mansion, resuming his persona as the carefree Young Master Jiang. The following day marked the death anniversary of Jiang Baiyu's late father, Jiang Jue.
Jiang Tianling and his father, Jiang Hu, visited their mother's pear tree. Jiang Hu expressed his sorrow, lamenting his inability to save his wife despite his medical expertise. Jiang Tianling comforted him, assuring his father that their mother lived on in their memories and urging him not to blame himself. Jiang Hu also discussed Madam Jiang's desire for both Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling to compete for a prestigious position in the Ministry of Inspection and Reserve.
Jiang Tianling, embodying the spirit of a gentleman, believed in fair competition with Jiang Baiyu and mutual support among kinsmen. Separately, Shui Wuxia sought out Ba Xi at a gambling hall to discuss the Golden Phoenix Pin. She explained its significance as the only keepsake from her brother, who had died suddenly. Ba Xi deduced that the original seller was likely a thief or burglar and that the black-clad robbers were involved in an internal or rival conflict.
Shui Wuxia mentioned the seller's distinct dark bruise under his ear, which Ba Xi identified as a potential sign of Five Eras Powder use. They planned to investigate the black market and an opium den the following night, with a box of pearl powder sent to the Jiang Mansion as a signal. Later, Madam Jiang, Jiang Hu, and Jiang Tianling confronted Jiang Baiyu in his room, which was in a state of disarray, reflecting his irresponsible lifestyle.
Madam Jiang was furious, making him kneel and scolding him for dishonoring his father's memory on such an important day. Jiang Tianling tried to intercede, highlighting some minor improvements in Jiang Baiyu's behavior, such as fewer skipped classes and hangovers. However, Madam Jiang dismissed these as insufficient, emphasizing that the incoming Lang Ya maid would surely transform him and restore his father's good name.
Jiang Baiyu, still under the mistaken impression that Shui Wuxia was Qi Delong, tried to persuade his grandmother to switch maids, arguing that Jiang Tianling was already competent and therefore needed a less capable maid, while he, being less diligent, required the gentle and amiable Shui Wuxia's guidance. Madam Jiang firmly refused, stating that the Lang Ya Pavilion's assignments were final.
The day for the Lang Ya maids' official arrival at Jiang Mansion finally came, drawing a crowd of onlookers who admired their beauty and elegant demeanor. At the welcoming banquet, Jiang Baiyu arrived late, fabricating an excuse about an upset stomach from snacks. He then reiterated his plea to his grandmother to switch maids, praising Shui Wuxia's qualities and wishing her to be his mentor. Madam Jiang, again, sternly rejected his request.
Finally, Shui Wuxia and Qi Delong were formally introduced. As Shui Wuxia announced her name, Jiang Baiyu, with a look of astonishment, realized that she was the very woman he had encountered at the auction. Shui Wuxia, in turn, recognized him as well.
Episode 2 Recap
Shui Wuxia and Qi Delong arrived at the Jiang Mansion and greeted Old Madam Jiang, who complimented their beauty. Recognizing Qi Delong, Old Madam Jiang then asked Shui Wuxia if she was indeed Shui Wuxia, realizing that she and Jiang Baiyu had already met. Shui Wuxia explained that she had intervened when Jiang Baiyu encountered some trouble recently, a fact Jiang Baiyu confirmed. Old Madam Jiang then understood why Jiang Baiyu had previously wanted Shui Wuxia to be his maid.
However, Jiang Baiyu quickly denied it, claiming Shui Wuxia was too wilful and rash for him. Old Madam Jiang was perplexed, noting that he had just been praising her and reminding him that Shui Wuxia was considered the top maid at Lang Ya Pavilion. Jiang Baiyu dismissed this as a mere rumor, doubting her true competence. Master Jiang suggested a pitch-pot competition, a popular game in Chong'an, which Old Madam Jiang approved.
Shui Wuxia flawlessly threw an arrow into the pot, earning praise from Old Madam Jiang. Jiang Baiyu, however, insisted that a Lang Ya Pavilion maid, being an advisor, should not be judged on such skills. He challenged Shui Wuxia to teach him how to make a shot, promising to take her surname if he succeeded. Shui Wuxia accepted.
As Jiang Baiyu prepared to deliberately miss, Shui Wuxia surprised everyone by guiding his hand and steadying his posture, ensuring the arrow landed perfectly. Old Madam Jiang, impressed by Shui Wuxia's martial prowess and ability to silence Jiang Baiyu with her words, declared that Shui Wuxia would be Jiang Baiyu’s advisor. Jiang Baiyu attempted to protest, pointing out that he had met Shui Wuxia in the Lantern Boudoir, hinting at her unsuitability.
Shui Wuxia countered that she was there to bid on a treasure, unlike his indulgence in "physical pleasures," and warned that he might suffer "physical damage" if she became his advisor. He expressed his preference for Qi Delong, citing bad luck whenever Shui Wuxia was near. However, Qi Delong humbly stated that Jiang Baiyu's rebellious nature was beyond her capabilities and that the clever Shui Wuxia was a better match.
Convinced, Old Madam Jiang finalized her decision, believing only Shui Wuxia could tame him. Shui Wuxia immediately took charge, discarding many of Jiang Baiyu’s "useless items." She informed him that only Old Madam Jiang and Master Jiang could give her orders, and he had no right to defy her. His monthly allowance, she added, would now require her approval. Jiang Baiyu attempted to apologize for his past behavior at the Lantern Boudoir, hoping to appease her.
Unmoved, Shui Wuxia laid out her plan: she would move into a wing room in his courtyard the next day, attend classes with him, and provide exclusive training after hours, strictly forbidding him from leaving her sight for more than fifteen minutes. Jiang Baiyu, asserting his status as the Jiang Family’s Young Master, deemed her actions "too far." He tried to escape through the back door, only to find it locked as per Shui Wuxia's instructions.
His subsequent attempt to jump from a window left him tangled in her rose vines, unable to descend. Shui Wuxia instructed him to remain there overnight to reflect, citing the abundance of bugs. Meanwhile, Qi Delong presented Junior Young Master Jiang Tianling with a detailed monthly schedule for his studies and martial arts training.
Jiang Tianling was impressed, finding the plan meticulous and echoing his own rigorous daily routine, which included early morning martial arts, midday law review, and evening strolls by the lake for relaxation and poetic contemplation. He commended Qi Delong for her dedication, acknowledging the challenges faced by women in such pursuits, and expressed confidence in her success.
Qi Delong lamented the societal limitations placed on women, but Jiang Tianling countered with examples of powerful women like Hua Mulan and Empress Wu Zetian, and praised the capabilities of Lang Ya Maids. Later, Jiang Tianling dismissed Qi Delong to rest, as he still had tasks for his late-night schedule. Overhearing him, Qi Delong was delighted, feeling she had found a kindred spirit. Concurrently, it was revealed that the "Golden Phoenix Pin" had become a significant issue.
Master Ma ordered that news be spread throughout the black market that they were seeking to purchase the pin. He also issued a grim command: if Shen Qingli, whom he viewed as meddlesome, interfered with their plans again, he was to be killed without mercy. The candidates for the Inspector exam, including Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling, attended a class taught by the head instructor, Hou Chang'an, also known as "Chang'an Monkey" due to his cunning.
Hou Chang'an explained that the exam was in 30 days and would comprise four sections, beginning with literature and martial arts fundamentals. When asked to define an Inspector, Jiang Baiyu offered a humorous, albeit partly correct, description of a powerful, high-ranking official. Hou Chang'an elaborated, stating that an Inspector operates independently of local government but holds sway over various matters within their jurisdiction, emphasizing that "with more power comes greater responsibility."
For the literature test, students were tasked with writing a poem, to which Jiang Baiyu submitted a nonsensical rhyme. The class then moved to martial arts, specifically archery. Shui Wuxia coached Jiang Baiyu on proper form, instructing him to raise his bow higher, shift his weight back, and, most importantly, to "follow his heart" when releasing the arrow. With her expert guidance, Shui Wuxia remarkably struck the tail of Jiang Tianling's arrow, splitting it in two.
Jiang Tianling was astonished by Shui Wuxia's skill, admitting he couldn't have made such a precise shot himself, while Jiang Baiyu boasted about his maid's prowess. Shui Wuxia continued Jiang Baiyu’s training, using his prized Luowan Bamboo to test his reflexes by having ink flow down it, which he had to prevent from staining his cherished perfume sachet, a gift from the Lantern Boudoir's "Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter" girls.
Though furious, Jiang Baiyu was forced to comply to save his sachet. Shui Wuxia clarified that these exercises were designed to enhance his archery speed and precision. She then made him sort soybeans to cultivate patience and willpower. Exasperated, Jiang Baiyu instead blended all the beans into soymilk, declared he lacked patience, and stormed off. In retaliation, Shui Wuxia tossed his monthly allowance into a snake cage, instructing him to retrieve it himself, and refused his pleas for help.
Jiang Baiyu eventually retrieved the money, but got his revenge by placing a snake in Shui Wuxia's bed with a note. Shui Wuxia, sensing something was amiss, cautiously checked her bed and was startled by the snake. In response, she hung Jiang Baiyu upside down in his room, commanding him to memorize all the legal texts pasted on his walls by morning, warning him of severe repercussions if he failed. Seeking fresh air, Shui Wuxia encountered Jiang Tianling.
He confirmed her presence was due to his brother. Shui Wuxia confessed that she had never encountered such a defiant person as Jiang Baiyu, puzzled by his self-destructive behavior despite his privileged background. Jiang Tianling explained that his brother was once a gentle, intelligent, and superior individual, but had changed after their uncle's accident. He considered Shui Wuxia's presence a blessing for Baiyu.
Jiang Tianling apologized for being her rival due to his grandmother’s orders, then playfully suggested he might win the exam and then she would be the one apologizing. He then asked for further clarification on her "follow your heart" archery advice. Shui Wuxia taught him stretching exercises, explaining that his years of martial arts practice without proper relaxation led to pain and prevented him from achieving the "unity of man and arrow."
She advised him to incorporate these stretches into his post-training routine. Afterward, Jiang Tianling asked Shui Wuxia to deliver a letter to Qi Delong. Returning to Jiang Baiyu's room, Shui Wuxia discovered that Fang Yuncheng had been substituted for Jiang Baiyu. She interrogated Fang Yuncheng, who eventually confessed that Jiang Baiyu had gone to the black market. Shui Wuxia rushed there, finding Jiang Baiyu hiding. He pulled her close and embraced her, urging silence as black-clad men passed by.
Her hair became entangled in his clothes, and she had to untangle it herself due to his fumbling. He then claimed he had seen a rat, his greatest fear, and insisted they return home. Elsewhere in the black market, Zhezhi inquired about the Golden Phoenix Pin. A vendor showed her a letter from the seller, detailing the pin's price of 8,000 taels and a proposed trade at his shop the following evening. Zhezhi found the price exorbitant.
She later reported to her superior that the seller had taken the bait, and another buyer had appeared that night, who didn't match Shen Qingli's description but might be an accomplice. They planned a comprehensive deployment in the black market the next evening to apprehend everyone involved. As punishment for his escapade, Shui Wuxia found Jiang Baiyu and forced him to spend the night in a cow shed, warning him of potential snakes and rats.
Episode 3 Recap
Jiang Baiyu's master, who had received news about the Golden Phoenix Pin, rushed to the black market but was ambushed and knocked unconscious by a group of black-clad men. Meanwhile, Shui Wuxia assigned Jiang Baiyu to the stables for the night, providing him with an illustrated book on equestrian skills. Despite Jiang Baiyu's protests about the uncomfortable conditions, including potential snakes and rats, Shui Wuxia remained firm, instructing him to use the time to bond with the horses.
Meanwhile, Jiang Tian Ling, the Junior Young Master, met with Qi Delong. He shared how Shui Wuxia's muscle relaxation techniques had made him feel incredibly refreshed, despite his heart racing. He then handed Qi Delong a letter from Shui Wuxia. The letter revealed that Qi Dong Qiang owed 260 silver taels, to be settled at Jiang Mansion's entrance. Angered, Qi Delong crumpled the letter and discarded it.
Jiang Baiyu's attendant, Fang Yun Cheng, who had fallen in love with Qi Delong at first sight, noticed and picked it up. Qi Delong, embarrassed, swiftly retrieved the paper and burned it. Fang Yun Cheng, observing her distress, empathized, explaining that he, too, grew up without parents in the Jiang Mansion, and despite the kindness of Old Madam Jiang and Young Master Jiang, he still yearned for parental affection, even if it meant facing their flaws.
In response, Qi Delong remarked to him that at least he (Fang Yun Cheng) harbored pleasant fantasies about his parents, unlike her own harsh memories. Shui Wuxia later observed Jiang Baiyu diligently grooming the horses and studying the book. Pleased with his newfound dedication, she took him to the archery grounds for a competition against Jiang Tian Ling, the Junior Young Master.
Qi Delong expressed doubts about Jiang Baiyu's chances, citing his lack of practice, to which Jiang Baiyu confidently declared that determination could overcome any obstacle. Shui Wuxia provided him with unconventional coaching, urging him to visualize the small bullseye as a pea and to imagine a snake in his arrow holder to sharpen his focus. During the competition, Jiang Tian Ling achieved an initial score of 40 points, while Jiang Baiyu had 32 points.
In the final round, Jiang Tian Ling's vision unexpectedly blurred, causing him to miss the target entirely. Jiang Baiyu, on the other hand, hit a seven-ring shot. With a final score of Jiang Tian Ling's 40 points to Jiang Baiyu's 39, Hou Chang'an and others were astonished by Jiang Baiyu's significant improvement, a result that thoroughly satisfied Shui Wuxia.
Later, Fang Yun Cheng approached Jiang Baiyu, seeking an advance on his salary to purchase pearl powder for a "sleep powder" he intended to make for Qi Delong. Fang Yun Cheng explained that "Sanqi flower", a key ingredient and the essence of the sleep powder cream, dissolved in water and could induce deep sleep within five minutes, promoting better skin rest.
Seeing an opportunity, Jiang Baiyu struck a deal with Fang Yun Cheng to acquire the Sanqi flower for his own plan. That evening, he prepared Shui Wuxia's bath, adding the Sanqi flower to both the water and an incense burner, masking its presence with scattered rose petals. He also thoughtfully provided luxurious Western saponin for her hair and a silky bath towel from Jiang Nan. Shui Wuxia, upon entering, ordered him out.
Soon after, as she soaked, the Sanqi flower took effect, and she fell into a deep sleep. Jiang Baiyu, waiting outside, confirmed her unconsciousness when she didn't respond to his calls, then quickly directed two passing maids to check on her before making his escape. Shui Wuxia awoke to find a box of pearl powder by her bedside, recognizing it as a pre-arranged signal. A maid confirmed it had been delivered half an hour earlier while Shui Wuxia was asleep.
Acting on the signal, Shui Wuxia, assisted by Liu (Xiaoliu), a contact sent by Ba Xi, donned a disguise and headed to the black market. There, she visited an opium den, where Master Li informed her that a sick individual had acquired a Golden Phoenix Pin and sold it to fund medical treatment, possibly for a prevalent epidemic.
Concurrently, the pin's seller arrived at the black market to complete his transaction but was ambushed by black-clad men, who forced him to surrender the Golden Phoenix Pin to spare his life. Shen Qingli appeared, intercepting the black-clad men as they tried to flee with the pin. Despite his exceptional martial arts skills, he was wounded by their hidden weapons. Shui Wuxia arrived and, recognizing Shen Qingli, joined forces with him once again to repel the attackers.
She immediately attended to his injury, offering a potent Lang Ya Miracle Herb from Lang Ya Pavilion. She warned him that his wound was severe, and attempting to leave without proper care would be fatal, detailing the severe consequences he would face within a short distance. Shen Qingli accepted her assistance, though he initially tried to leave. Shui Wuxia then asked him if the Golden Phoenix Pin was his.
Meanwhile, Master Ma, furious that Shen Qingli had repeatedly thwarted his plans, suspected him of targeting Xiao Kai Zhen. His subordinates assured him they had already dispatched men to investigate Shen Qingli's background and believed Shen Qingli was seriously wounded and unlikely to cause further trouble. Examining the recovered Golden Phoenix Pin, Master Ma noted recent repairs and ordered his men to find the skilled craftsman in Chong'an responsible for the work.
After receiving initial medical attention from Shui Wuxia, Shen Qingli departed to meet his own master at the Lantern Boudoir. He recounted the ambush, his injuries from hidden weapons, and how Shui Wuxia's timely intervention with the Lang Ya Miracle Herb had stabilized his condition. He explained that he had allowed the pin's seller to go free after learning the man had stolen it, but the original owner remained unknown.
Shen Qingli asked his master to investigate all herbal medicine shops in Chong'an for any leads. His master provided him with pain relief powder and 6,000 silver taels to distribute among refugees. Back at Jiang Mansion, Shui Wuxia returned to confront Jiang Baiyu. She found him bathing in the dark, late at night, and noticed a distinct scent of blood.
Jiang Baiyu initially tried to deflect, claiming it was merely his "hobby" and denying any blood, but Shui Wuxia pressed him. He eventually confessed that he had taken an excessive amount of the Pride and Dignity pill from Lantern Boudoir, resulting in a nosebleed from "over-supplementation." Shui Wuxia confiscated the potent medicine and ordered him to finish his bath immediately, then to recite the political discourse she had assigned him, word for word.
Later, Jiang Baiyu, contemplating Shui Wuxia's "adorable" side when she wasn't scolding him, called for Fang Yun Cheng. He found Fang Yun Cheng painstakingly preparing a "facial mask" with pearl powder for Qi Delong. Recognizing Fang Yun Cheng's affection, Jiang Baiyu promised him any items Shui Wuxia didn't want in exchange for a favor. He then instructed Fang Yun Cheng to secretly copy the entire political discourse onto his clothes, so he could cheat during Shui Wuxia's upcoming test.
Fang Yun Cheng protested the sheer volume of text, but Jiang Baiyu insisted. During the test, Shui Wuxia quickly realized Jiang Baiyu was attempting to cheat. Cornered, Jiang Baiyu boldly challenged the political discourse itself, arguing that its emphasis on frugality was misguided and failed to consider the well-being of the common people.
Using the example of edible bird's nest, he eloquently explained the intricate economic web: how the demand for bird's nest provided livelihoods for coastal gatherers, supported merchants, caravan operators, inns, and local vendors. He concluded with a profound statement: "The country's foundation lies in its people's livelihood. The basis of their livelihoods lies in the economy. The economy lies in the transportation and production of goods." Shui Wuxia was visibly surprised by his unexpected insight.
She then prepared a meal for him, incorporating preventative herbs like leptochloa and cedar seeds in the dishes, and ginger and asarum in the porridge, even offering honey, stating it was to prevent the prevalent epidemic. Jiang Baiyu, suspicious of her sudden kindness, questioned her motives.
Shui Wuxia admitted she had initially dismissed him as a frivolous young master but was genuinely impressed by his original and positive interpretation of the bird's nest example, highlighting how "every time you and I share a bowl of bird's nest, a household by the sea will become prosperous."
Jiang Baiyu, pleased, began to boast about his visits to pleasure quarters being for understanding the suffering of common people, but Shui Wuxia quickly cut him off, still pondering the true nature of his complex personality.
Episode 4 Recap
Shui Wuxia approached Jiang Baiyu, expressing her bewilderment at his contrasting personalities. She noted that he could profoundly discuss national foundations and economy one moment, then flippantly declare himself busy with drinking the next, prompting her to ask which was his true self. Jiang Baiyu feigned ignorance, asking what she meant. Shui Wuxia explained that she knew he was intelligent and sensible as a child, and believed his current frivolous behavior stemmed from a past misfortune.
She felt his true self was the one capable of pragmatically analyzing the common people's livelihoods from something as simple as a bird's nest. While acknowledging the pain of losing a loved one, Shui Wuxia emphasized that living a more positive life was the best way to honor them. She added that he was fortunate to have Old Madam Jiang, his father, and Young Master Tianling by his side, something she deeply envied.
Elsewhere, Yun Cheng arrived to deliver a facial mask to Qi Delong, while Young Master Tianling secretly watched. Qi Delong refused the gift, stating their previous encounter was merely by chance and she hadn't requested anything. Seeing Yun Cheng dejected, Young Master Tianling approached him, offering to relay the mask to Qi Delong after her lesson.
Young Master Tianling then asked Yun Cheng for advice, framing it as a query from a "friend" who felt flustered when seeing a particular young lady and moody in her absence. Yun Cheng quickly deduced that Young Master Tianling was speaking about himself. He confirmed that the "friend" was indeed falling for the girl and encouraged him to pursue her. He then gave him a book, "Thirty-Six Tactics of Love".
Instructor Hou subjected Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling to rigorous arm strength training. During this, Jiang Baiyu's old wound reopened, causing him considerable pain. Jiang Baiyu found Shui Wuxia brewing medicine for Shen Qingli. He offered her some Durian Candy, and volunteered to help brew the medicine. Jiang Baiyu repeatedly tried to drink the concoction, but Shui Wuxia consistently prevented him, and he ultimately did not get to drink it.
Later, Jiang Baiyu expressed his desire to go out, but Shui Wuxia had assigned numerous maids to guard him, making escape difficult. With Yun Cheng's assistance, Jiang Baiyu disguised himself as a maid. They staged a dramatic scene where Yun Cheng, pretending to be an abusive nanny, "beat" Jiang Baiyu, who feigned spitting blood. Sympathizing with the "abused maid," the other nannies allowed "her" to leave and rest, thus enabling Jiang Baiyu's successful escape from the manor.
Jiang Baiyu, now disguised as Shen Qingli, met Shui Wuxia. She immediately noticed his re-opened wound and cleaned it with alcohol before dressing it, teasing him for being a brave swordsman yet flinching at ointment. Noticing that "Shen Qingli" hadn't eaten, he offered to take her to a stall. At a millet pancake vendor, "Shen Qingli" explained it had become his regular spot for midnight snacks. Shui Wuxia inquired about his mask.
He revealed that he had been disfigured in a childhood accident that also took his father's life, leading him to wear the mask ever since. He wondered if his father might have lived had he learned martial arts earlier. Shui Wuxia offered him a comforting perspective, likening it to optimists and pessimists viewing the same day differently. She explained that even seemingly extravagant acts like eating bird's nest supported merchants, and unpleasant-smelling durian could be delicious.
She reassured him that his past was not his fault, and that his heroic endeavors might be a way of fulfilling his father's aspirations. As they finished their meal, they suddenly witnessed bullies harassing people. " Shen Qingli" suggested they act as heroes, and Shui Wuxia eagerly agreed. They confronted the bullies, took their money, and scattered it, causing a chaotic scramble among the bystanders that allowed them to make a joyful escape. Both were very happy.
Later, Old Madam Jiang discovered Jiang Baiyu's unauthorized outing. She confronted Jiang Baiyu, angrily questioning if the girls at Lantern Boudoir were "goddesses who could snatch his soul." Turning to Shui Wuxia, Old Madam Jiang reminded her that her role was to mentor and advise Jiang Baiyu. She sternly criticized Shui Wuxia for not only allowing him to leave but also for breaking rules herself. Shui Wuxia acknowledged her mistake and apologized, and Old Madam Jiang warned her not to cause further disappointment, to which Shui Wuxia promised to fulfill her duty.
Episode 5 Recap
Shui Wuxia moved her bed into Jiang Baiyu's room to sleep there, a decision Jiang Baiyu protested but found ineffective. That night, Jiang Baiyu attempted to sneak out while Shui Wuxia was asleep. He navigated obstacles to reach the door, but she discovered him as he tried to unlock it. The next morning, Shui Wuxia woke Jiang Baiyu by blowing a whistle near his ear.
She ordered him to make his bed, repeatedly making him redo it until it was neat. She then supervised his frog jumps and even imposed a time limit on his bath, to which Jiang Baiyu reluctantly succumbed. In a fit of defiance, Jiang Baiyu cut Shui Wuxia's whip and then threw books across the room. Shui Wuxia warned him that such defiance would lead to consequences.
Meanwhile, a black-clothed man found the craftsman who had repaired the Golden Phoenix Pin and had him draw a likeness of the person who brought it. The craftsman revealed that the person had lacked money and paid with two packets of herbal medicine, including ginseng and lucid ganoderma, which were known to be found only around North Bay Village. Separately, Zhe Zhi investigated at a pharmacy and discovered a connection to North Bay Village.
Jiang Tianling, inspired by the "Thirty-six Tactics of Love," prepared Pear Blossom Four-herbs Decoction in the pavilion. Seeing Shui Wuxia, he scooped a bowl to offer it to her, but just as he was about to feed it to her, Jiang Baiyu intervened, taking the bowl and drinking the soup himself. Later, Yun Cheng asked Jiang Baiyu for money to customize a facial mask for Qi Delong.
Jiang Baiyu explained that Shui Wuxia was now living with him and managing all his finances, so he had no money to lend. This revelation, combined with Jiang Baiyu's earlier comment about being "worn out" by Shui Wuxia, led Yun Cheng and others to mistakenly believe a romantic relationship existed between them, causing general shock. Jiang Baiyu quickly clarified the nature of their living arrangement. Zhe Zhi sent a note to Jiang Baiyu, urging him to come immediately.
As he tried to leave, Shui Wuxia blocked his path. Instructor Hou Chang'an then arrived. Jiang Baiyu fabricated a story, claiming that a new martial arts arena had opened in Chong'an and that Shui Wuxia had suggested they go to combine theory with practice. Although Shui Wuxia had said no such thing, seeing the item Shen Qingli had given her (which Jiang Baiyu was wearing), she reluctantly played along and supported his claim.
Instructor Hou agreed that combining theory with practice was beneficial and allowed everyone to go to "learn something." Upon arriving, they discovered the "martial arts arena" was actually a matchmaking event, where a lady would throw a satin bouquet to choose a husband. Jiang Baiyu tried to leave, but the bouquet unexpectedly landed in his hands, and he was promptly ushered onto the stage. Miss Yue'e made her grand entrance, surprising everyone.
Jiang Baiyu, clearly unenthusiastic, attempted to escape the situation, but Shui Wuxia intervened, taking back the item Shen Qingli had given her from Jiang Baiyu. Miss Yue'e understood the situation and blessed them, cancelling the match. Later, passing a gambling house, Shui Wuxia suggested they go in, and everyone entered. They encountered a man with remarkably sharp hearing. Shui Wuxia's friend was defeated, and even Shui Wuxia herself lost.
Seeing this, Jiang Baiyu decided to challenge the man, and in one swift game, he won a valuable hairpin. Jiang Baiyu wanted to continue gambling, but the other patrons, intimidated by his skill, dispersed. Ba Xi then informed Shui Wuxia that the person with the Golden Phoenix Pin was in North Bay Village, and she decided to go there personally.
Separately, Jiang Baiyu also learned about North Bay Village from Zhe Zhi, who indicated the village was under quarantine, making entry difficult. Shui Wuxia then approached Jiang Tianling, seeking to join his expedition to North Bay Village by claiming she had a best friend named "Meng Xi" there (which was also the title of Jiang Tianling's book). Jiang Tianling, citing the extreme danger due to the contagion, refused to take her.
Shui Wuxia, undeterred, resolved to find another way into the village. The next day, Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu, both in disguise, managed to infiltrate North Bay Village by joining Jiang Tianling's convoy. Once inside, they went their separate ways. Shui Wuxia soon found a strange, empty house she suspected belonged to the man she was searching for. After searching it, she hid when she heard someone approaching. Shortly after, Jiang Baiyu entered the same house and also searched it. Hearing someone else arrive, he decided to hide in a large pottery jar, only to lift the lid and discover Shui Wuxia already inside.
Episode 6 Recap
After hearing sounds of people approaching, Jiang Baiyu quickly sought refuge in a large jar. To his surprise, he found Shui Wuxia already hiding inside, and both were startled to see each other. He swiftly joined her in the jar. Two soldiers entered the room, searching around. Inside the jar, both Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia wondered why the other was there, giving the same answer: they were hiding from someone.
Suddenly, Shui Wuxia spotted a bug on Jiang Baiyu's shoulder. Alarmed, he let out a gasp, but Shui Wuxia quickly covered his mouth. The sound, however, was heard by the soldiers, who came to investigate. Just then, an announcement from outside reported that the person they were looking for had been found, and the soldiers left. Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia emerged from the jar, but before they could leave, they overheard orders for several guards to remain stationed outside.
They quickly scanned the surroundings and escaped through a window. Outside, they saw an official wagon from Jiang Province. The wagon had broken down, forcing the officers to stop for repairs. They watched as someone hurriedly hid inside a chest on the wagon, an act witnessed not only by Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia but also by a group of people searching for the owner of the Golden Phoenix Pin.
Realizing the owner of the Golden Phoenix Pin was in a chest on the supply wagon, Jiang Baiyu considered hijacking the vehicle. However, Zhe Zhi strongly advised against it, explaining that it was a government wagon and any mishap could be fatal. Jiang Baiyu insisted, stating that this was the closest they had been to the truth in years, a chance he couldn't miss.
Zhe Zhi, with a sigh, informed him that the supplies being transported to Jiang Province contained items for the upcoming Double Seventh Lantern Festival and would arrive in about two days. Meanwhile, Ba Xi urged Shui Wuxia not to be so consumed by her obsession, reminding her that the pursuit of the Golden Phoenix Pin was becoming increasingly risky, especially with Jiang Baiyu now involved and the initial clues proving unreliable.
Shui Wuxia acknowledged that her obsession was deep, admitting that whether or not she found the pin, her brother was already gone. Ba Xi then reminded her that life must go on and asked how Shui Wuxia planned to spend the Double Seventh Festival. Shui Wuxia, feeling alone, saw no reason to celebrate.
Ba Xi then asked if Shui Wuxia had recently experienced blushing, a fast heartbeat, or sweaty palms, to which Shui Wuxia’s reaction suggested these symptoms were indeed present. Ba Xi told her about the grand Double Seventh Lantern Festival in Jiang Province, where all the young men and women of Chong'an would gather, implying Shui Wuxia would surely want to invite someone special to attend with her, and handed her a flyer.
Jiang Tianling, engrossed in a book titled "Love's 36 Strategies," read about giving special gifts on special occasions, understanding it meant not to miss a joyous holiday and to give a gold hairpin to spend the holiday with a loved one. Jiang Baiyu, wanting to attend the Double Seventh Lantern Festival, approached Jiang Tianling and prompted him to ask Old Madam Jiang for permission. Jiang Baiyu then eagerly dragged Jiang Tianling to see her.
Old Madam Jiang, proud of Jiang Tianling's efforts in North Bay Village, readily agreed to his request for a day off to tour Jiang Province, but stipulated that Jiang Baiyu would have to remain behind to study for his upcoming exams. Jiang Baiyu quickly interjected, claiming he needed to accompany his younger brother to prevent him from getting lost.
Old Madam Jiang saw through his pretense, realizing it was Jiang Baiyu who truly desired to go to Jiang Province, and reiterated her condition that he would only be allowed to participate if he excelled in his upcoming exams. During a study session, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia exhibited symptoms resembling a cold.
Jiang Tianling recalled that the initial signs of seasonal contagion were very similar to a common cold, though the contagion was much more severe and could be life-threatening within two days. He and Qi Delong dismissed the possibility, believing neither Jiang Baiyu nor Shui Wuxia had been to North Bay Village where the illness originated. However, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, knowing they "had" visited North Bay Village, grew concerned about having contracted the seasonal contagion.
By the next day, their symptoms appeared to worsen. Since the seasonal contagion typically took about two days to confirm, they wouldn't know their diagnosis until the following day. Shui Wuxia proposed they treat their illness as a cold for now, and to be safe, they should both stay home from school for the next two days. During their illness, they attempted to treat themselves with "fishy grass" medicine, comically struggling to consume it, which deepened their bond.
One evening, Jiang Tianling brought them an incense burner filled with aromatic coal, expressing concern they might get cold. Shui Wuxia thanked him but declined the gift, falsely claiming she already felt much better and needed to tutor Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Baiyu quickly agreed, sending Jiang Tianling away to focus on his own studies, fearing potential contagion. Later that night, Jiang Baiyu felt dizzy and cold.
Shui Wuxia expressed gratitude to Jiang Baiyu for enduring the hardships of North Bay Village with him, to which he replied, calling her "Master Shui" and stating they were "on the same side." As he suggested calling Yun Cheng for medicine, Shui Wuxia suddenly collapsed with a fever. Jiang Baiyu quickly carried her to bed and stayed by her side, caring for her throughout the night. The next morning, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia woke up feeling much better.
Jiang Baiyu was no longer dizzy, and Shui Wuxia’s fever had subsided. They realized the two-day incubation period had passed, confirming they had not contracted the seasonal contagion. Overjoyed, they shared an excited embrace. Shui Wuxia immediately warned Jiang Baiyu not to speak of what happened the previous night, to which he playfully retorted that it would depend on his mood.
Determined to earn his trip to Jiang Province for the Double Seventh Lantern Festival, Jiang Baiyu enthusiastically dedicated himself to his studies. Shui Wuxia, in the presence of Jiang Tianling, helped him by applying a color-coding system for his books, a method she learned from her brother: golden for mastered content, silver for areas needing improvement, and green for concepts not yet understood. Jiang Tianling commented positively on the method's clarity.
Jiang Baiyu looked at his book, noting it was almost entirely covered in green, signifying he had yet to grasp most of the material. Shui Wuxia reassured him that they would remove a green label each time he conquered a topic, expressing the goal that with his effort, all the green labels would be gone by the end of the day. The final assessment was set in a cave outside the city.
They were told to split into two groups and navigate three stages, with the first to complete them being declared the winner. Jiang Baiyu entered the pitch-black cave with Shui Wuxia. In the darkness, Jiang Baiyu stumbled and fell, complaining about the lack of light and his childhood fear of the dark, insisting Shui Wuxia protect him. As they cautiously made their way through, they reached a brightly lit area.
Jiang Baiyu reached out and touched what he believed to be a mechanism, causing a sudden reaction that led Shui Wuxia to pull him close. He quickly clarified his action. Shui Wuxia speculated that Instructor Hou, a highly praised inspector known for his work on cases like the Nan An Salt Merchant Corruption Case and the Wu Mian Assassination Case, designed the cave to prepare them for the real challenges of an inspector’s daily life.
When they saw an unexpected meal appear, Shui Wuxia warned against touching it, fearing it might be poisoned. Jiang Baiyu questioned whether such "norms" were truly necessary for an inspector if they simply chose not to become one, but she dismissed his doubts. He then found another mechanism.
Episode 7 Recap
Jiang Baiyu touched what he believed to be a mechanism, but nothing happened. Shui Wuxia then noticed a poem inscribed on a stone tablet. After reading the verse, they speculated that it might be connected to the various dishes laid out on a table. They carefully arranged the food items according to the clues in the poem. Once everything was in place, Jiang Baiyu pressed the same button he had touched earlier, and a hidden door swung open.
Beyond the door, they found another room with more poems, which spoke of profound longing, unrequited love, and bitter accusations of betrayal. Jiang Baiyu interpreted these verses, suggesting that their predicament was akin to love itself, often leaving one caught in a dilemma. He then playfully asked Shui Wuxia about her ideal man. She described a man who would fear neither arduous paths nor societal judgment, one who was cunning yet kind-hearted.
Most importantly, if he loved her, he would be willing to journey alongside her while still allowing her the freedom to soar like an eagle. Jiang Baiyu, teasing, asked if she meant someone experienced, older, and with "eagle-like features." Shui Wuxia, dismissing his teasing, called him a "little rascal." Seeing her reaction and lack of denial, Jiang Baiyu jokingly shouted that "Master Shui is in love" towards both available exits.
He then noticed that one side produced a loud, quick echo, indicating a dead end, while the other side’s echo lingered, marking the way forward. They chose the latter path. Eventually, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia reunited with Jiang Tianling and another participant, forming a group of four. Shui Wuxia noted that the initial poems were merely a distraction, and their instructor, Hou, was testing their ability to think unconventionally.
Jiang Tianling expressed his surprise and delight at seeing his older brother, Jiang Baiyu, and Shui Wuxia. As they navigated the final stage, they encountered poisonous fumes and a barrage of arrows. In the chaos, Jiang Baiyu quickly grabbed Shui Wuxia’s hand, and all four managed to escape the traps. With their successful exit, Jiang Baiyu was announced as the winner of the assessment.
After the assessment, Qi Delong visited Jiang Tianling, offering comfort for his loss, but he genuinely expressed happiness for Jiang Baiyu's victory, acknowledging his brother's surprising and rapid improvement, which made their rivalry more exciting. Qi Delong then suggested that Jiang Tianling should also go to Jiangzhou to relax, despite it being Jiang Baiyu's reward. Though initially hesitant due to propriety, Jiang Tianling eventually agreed.
Meanwhile, Shui Wuxia asked Ba Xi to hang red lanterns and deliver a message to Shen Qingli: she would be waiting for him on Jiangzhou Bridge on the Double Seventh Festival. Ba Xi playfully teased her, to which Shui Wuxia insisted they were merely friends planning to stroll around. Jiang Baiyu had already secured permission for his trip, telling Fang Yuncheng that he wouldn't need to accompany him to Jiangzhou.
On the Double Seventh Festival, Shui Wuxia, dressed beautifully, and Jiang Baiyu traveled to Jiangzhou, a place bustling with people and vibrant red lanterns. Jiang Baiyu openly complimented her appearance. As they enjoyed the festive atmosphere, eating cherry blossom flavored cotton candy, they unexpectedly met Jiang Tianling, Qi Delong, and Fang Yuncheng. Jiang Tianling, feigning concern that Shui Wuxia might get lost, waited for her after she went to buy more cotton candy.
He then attempted to give her a precious hairpin named "Phoenix's Grace," but Jiang Baiyu interrupted, taking the hairpin from him. Qi Delong recognized the item, and Jiang Baiyu commented on its high cost. Seeing an opportunity, Jiang Tianling gracefully presented "Phoenix's Grace" to Qi Delong instead, acknowledging her dedication in helping him with his studies. Jiang Baiyu then light-heartedly offered to buy something similar for Shui Wuxia, but she declined.
Later, while they were gathered, Shui Wuxia inwardly yearned for Shen Qingli's arrival, needing to find a way to leave. Jiang Baiyu, also needing to escape to deal with an impending supply wagon, proposed a game of dice. The rules were simple: the person whose number was rolled had to drink and then could ask any question, which the chosen person had to answer truthfully. Everyone agreed.
Fang Yuncheng was the first to drink and asked Qi Delong if she had a crush, which she confirmed without naming the person. Next, Jiang Tianling rolled, drank, and asked Shui Wuxia what kind of man she liked. Before she could answer, Jiang Baiyu quickly interjected, repeating her earlier description of an ideal man who was unafraid of hardship, cunning yet kind, and would let her be an eagle.
He then jokingly summarized that she liked older, experienced men with "eagle-like features." As the game continued, Jiang Baiyu noted that Shui Wuxia had a remarkably high alcohol tolerance, and she similarly observed that he seemed unfazed by the drinks. Finally, both of them seized the chance to escape, separately excusing themselves to go to the outhouse.
After leaving the festivities, Shui Wuxia stopped at a stall and purchased two glazed bracelets, a symbol of undivided love, hoping that a couple wearing them would be together forever. Shortly after, Jiang Baiyu passed the same stall, looking thoughtfully at the items. Unbeknownst to Shui Wuxia, Shen Qingli was engaged in a critical mission at the Jiangzhou Post House.
He had located and was attempting to rescue the owner of the "Red Gold Phoenix Tail Needle" from a supply wagon. He gave the person something to ingest before trying to escape. However, a group of black-clad assailants arrived, intercepted them, and after a fierce struggle, overpowered Shen Qingli and knocked the owner unconscious, taking him away. Shen Qingli was unable to pursue them. Meanwhile, Shui Wuxia waited patiently on Jiangzhou Bridge, expecting Shen Qingli.
As time passed and he did not appear, fireworks lit up the night sky. Though separated, both Shen Qingli and Shui Wuxia gazed upon the same display. Shui Wuxia anxiously scanned the crowd, searching for any sign of him, but her efforts were in vain. Surrounded by couples, she felt a profound sense of loneliness and disappointment as she clutched the bracelets in her hand.
Episode 8 Recap
Jiang Baiyu returned to the Lantern Boudoir and recounted the recent events to his master, Zhe Zhi. He urgently requested a roadmap of Chong'an, determined to find the person they had been seeking. Zhe Zhi, however, questioned how he planned to locate someone in such a vast city, wondering if he would abandon his classes to search daily. She warned that with numerous watchful eyes on him, any slip-up while investigating his father's case could ruin all their prior efforts.
Zhe Zhi offered him wine, prompting Jiang Baiyu to ask about her consistently calm demeanor despite mission failures. She likened missions to relationships, explaining that breakups are less important than the experience gained. Failures, she noted, often lead to new clues. The persistent pursuit of their target by the men in black suggested a more elaborate conspiracy than just murder.
Zhe Zhi believed that if the individual from yesterday had been apprehended, they would have only uncovered half the truth about his father's death. She promised to send her people to investigate anyone seen in Jiangzhou yesterday for new leads, cautioning Jiang Baiyu to avoid rash actions and to continue playing the role of Young Master Jiang, to which he agreed.
Before leaving, Jiang Baiyu showed Zhe Zhi a pair of couple's bracelets, claiming they were for no one in particular. Zhe Zhi, drawing on her extensive romantic experience, shared her wisdom: "Take action early; don't give them a chance to escape." Jiang Baiyu, finding the proverb tiresome, departed for the mansion.
Shui Wuxia asked Ba Xi why Shen Qingli had not shown up for their Double Seventh Festival meeting at Jiangzhou bridge, speculating he might have missed her red lanterns or the note. Ba Xi assured her that the lanterns were hung and the note left, then offered three possibilities: he never saw the messages, he had a last-minute emergency, or he simply chose not to come.
Shui Wuxia dismissed the latter two, convinced that Shen Qingli, as a principled swordsman, would have responded if he had seen her invitation. Ba Xi remarked on Shui Wuxia's tendency to overthink when in love. That evening, Shui Wuxia planned to leave the mansion to deliver medicine to Shen Qingli, but she overheard guards announcing an early closure of the Jiang Mansion gates and increased patrols, specifically instructing Young Master Jiang and others not to venture out.
Inside their shared room, Jiang Baiyu, overhearing the announcement, deliberately began undressing in front of Shui Wuxia, compelling her to leave the room. Later, Jiang Baiyu, disguised as Shen Qingli, met Shui Wuxia on the rooftop. She expressed relief that he had consumed the medicine she left in her room, which he claimed he took while Jiang Baiyu was changing. They both revealed they had spent the Double Seventh Festival alone.
Each wanted to confess something, but they kept deferring to one another. As they both instinctively reached for their waist to present gifts, Shui Wuxia turned away, urging him to speak first. Shen Qingli's hand slipped, and a bracelet fell to the ground. Mortified, he quickly covered his embarrassment by claiming he saw a stray cat.
Shui Wuxia, about to present her own bracelet, noticed a similar couple's bracelet already on Shen Qingli's wrist, leading her to believe he had a lover. She retracted her gift. Shen Qingli then suggested that since she was confined to the mansion, he would visit her instead, an arrangement she readily accepted, admitting she had wanted to propose the same.
As he departed, Shui Wuxia pondered the bracelet, wondering if it was a gift from an admirer or a fan, and if her master's romantic advice was indeed flawed, deciding to slow down and cultivate their feelings more. Meanwhile, the man Shen Qingli had tried to rescue, who identified himself as a barefoot doctor, was held captive and interrogated by the black-clad men. They pressed him about his seven years of evasion and his recent connection to Shen Qingli.
The captive feigned ignorance of Shen Qingli, fabricating a story about Shen Qingli harboring a vendetta against him for a fatal error in a past prescription, resulting in a death. His interrogator, unconvinced, pointed out Shen Qingli's repeated appearances suggested a deeper connection. The captive steadfastly maintained that Shen Qingli pursued him due to an old grudge.
The captors then demanded what they needed from him, but he defiantly refused to cooperate, asserting that he would never stoop to their level, despite his seven years of hardship. Instructor Hou Chang'an commended Jiang Baiyu's significant progress in the foundational literary and martial arts courses, viewing it as proof that he could excel if he applied himself diligently. He then introduced the next phase of their training: "experiencing people's livelihood."
Hou Chang'an explained that this concept, the bedrock of the nation, remained elusive to the privileged students due to their sheltered upbringing. He instructed them to immerse themselves in common life: eat like the locals, use their tools, and speak their language, to truly grasp their daily struggles. The students ventured into the bustling streets, encountering shops with eccentric names such as "Hangman's Barber Shop," "Bandit's Massage Parlor," "Grandma Meng's Hot and Sour Soup," and "Netherworld Beauty Salon."
They sampled the "Bandit's Massage Parlor," where a charming masseuse explained her life as a bandit was simply a "hobby." Later, at a food stall, Shui Wuxia felt an eerie chill from the peculiar soup, noting that slums were often chaotic, rife with illicit goods and clandestine dealings, making them fortunate to avoid being targeted. Suddenly, a child named Little Bao collapsed.
Shui Wuxia quickly diagnosed him with hydrothorax and expertly applied pressure to his Nei Guan and Tian Chi acupoints, successfully reviving him. The grateful foster mother offered them more of her unique soup, mentioning it was traditionally served to "death row prisoners," which the students politely declined before leaving. Back at the mansion, Jiang Tianling attempted to engage Shui Wuxia in a book discussion, reading a moving passage about a loquat tree.
A jealous Jiang Baiyu insisted on joining them, undeterred by Jiang Tianling's attempts to exclude him. Jiang Baiyu interrupted their conversation about "Romance of the Western Chamber" and the "Exploitation of the Works of Nature"—an encyclopedia of technology and industry by Song Ying Xing—claiming hunger and pulling Shui Wuxia away.
During a subsequent meal, Jiang Tianling and Shui Wuxia continued discussing "Exploitation of the Works of Nature," expressing admiration for Song Ying Xing's audacious insights and his scientific debunking of superstitions, such as demon fires being caused by decaying coffins. They shared anecdotes about their own, comically failed attempts at pottery and dyeing using his instructions. Jiang Baiyu, feeling sidelined as Jiang Tianling wrapped food for Shui Wuxia, lost his appetite and urged them to eat.
Hou Chang'an then assigned them to investigate Lavish Lane in Southern Chong'an. He described the area as a complex mix of good and evil, where government intervention was often thwarted by the locals' deep distrust of outsiders.
While their previous mission to Southern Chong'an had allowed them to blend in, this new task was to uncover the truth behind Lavish Lane, a place known for offering high wages for laborers but also for a disproportionately high number of missing persons, leading Hou Chang'an to suspect a sinister connection. Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia returned to the food stall and inquired about Lavish Lane's leader.
The foster mother described "Third Brother" as a ruthless man with extensive connections who enjoyed reading local dialect novels and was often seen at the east end bookstall. On their way, Jiang Baiyu playfully teased Shui Wuxia about her apparent interest in men like Zhang Sheng and her perceived closeness to his younger brother, while Shui Wuxia remained focused on their mission. At the bookstall, they identified the kind of novels Third Brother favored.
Jiang Baiyu jested about Shui Wuxia having already read books he thought she hadn't. They then discussed creating an "advance copy" of a popular novel to impress Third Brother. Jiang Baiyu found the current novel, which featured a young girl infatuated with a swordsman, to be a predictable "old man seducing a young girl" trope with an unrealistic age gap.
Third Brother, who had been eavesdropping, interjected, asserting that true love transcends age and defending the story's depth: a cold-blooded killer transformed by his love for a girl, becoming her protector, only to vanish just as she was about to confess her feelings. He admitted his impatience for the unpublished fifth volume. Recognizing Third Brother's profound appreciation for the story, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia decided to write a continuation in his preferred style.
They spent time collaborating, with Jiang Baiyu, embodying the persona of Shen Qingli, emphasizing his interpretation of the killer's "simple and transparent" yet lonely nature. The next day, they presented their "advance copy" to Third Brother as a gift. Third Brother, perceptive, saw through their "coincidental" meeting and the timely delivery of the unpublished volume. He invited them to Lavish Lane for a discussion. Once inside, Third Brother drew his sword, demanding their true identities.
Jiang Baiyu quickly claimed they were siblings in hiding. Third Brother, observing their "matching clothes" and undeniable bond, stated they were clearly more than siblings. To protect themselves, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia improvised a dramatic tale of star-crossed lovers hounded by villains, forcing them into hiding and seeking employment with him, expressing their desperate need for an opportunity. Third Brother was visibly moved by their "love story."
He confessed his enjoyment of creative writing but lamented his lack of "real feeling" due to his profession, humbly asking for their advice. They agreed to share their insights, and he, in turn, shared his own story about a "not-so-cold-blooded killer." That evening, Third Brother hosted a meal for them. Shui Wuxia, sensing his longing for a different life, gently questioned why he remained confined to Lavish Lane despite his creative spirit.
He replied that some individuals, like them seeking work, simply had no choice, implying they were "not destined to choose." He then instructed them to prepare for work assignments the following day. Unbeknownst to Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, Third Brother wrestled with a moral dilemma. He confided in a statue of Old Mister Guan, revealing that Master Ma had ordered him to deliver the two to him.
He noted that horse carriages had departed earlier without any strong men, suggesting they were diversions for government investigations. Third Brother expressed his deep reluctance to send Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, likening it to "sheep entering a tiger's mouth," and ultimately decided against it. Meanwhile, other members of their team, presumably Shen Qingli's group or allies, had also located Lavish Lane. They planned a coordinated "inside and outside" operation to coincide with Third Brother's group's departure.
The next morning, Third Brother led Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia to the Southern Chong'an Dung Yard. The person in charge confirmed their referral from Third Brother, handed them tools, and directed them to follow. Jiang Baiyu observed the strange demeanor of the people and the unusual environment, suspecting that the dung yard was merely a façade concealing a deeper secret.
Episode 9 Recap
Government forces tightened their grip around Lavish Lane, forcing Master Ma's subordinates to send refugees to work at a dung yard. Master Ma, seemingly unfazed, suspected an internal informant due to the intensified pressure from the authorities and instructed his subordinate to investigate thoroughly. Master Ma then visited a captured man, who agreed to his demands. Master Ma was eager to examine the man's seven years of research, only to find that it had made no significant progress.
Despite this disappointment, Master Ma still needed the man's help, acknowledging his unparalleled Golden Phoenix Pin and exceptional medical skills. The captive agreed to test medicines but stipulated he required patients, to which Master Ma chillingly responded that he could "create" patients if none were readily available. Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu returned to the Jiang Mansion, still carrying the foul stench from their recent investigation in Lavish Lane.
They were frustrated, realizing their mission had gone awry because Third Brother had genuinely considered them friends. Meanwhile, while Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia were investigating Third Brother, Jiang Tianling and Qi Delong had uncovered new leads. Together, Jiang Tianling, Qi Delong, Jiang Baiyu, and Shui Wuxia went to the Lantern Boudoir. Soon after they were seated, Third Brother's henchman entered.
Jiang Tianling, having encountered the man previously in Lavish Lane, recognized the same distinctive scent on him as his brother Jiang Baiyu, deducing that the henchman was a regular at the Lantern Boudoir. They decided to get him drunk to extract information. Zhe Zhi instructed her girls, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, to handle the henchman, confident that no one could resist their charms.
Surprisingly, Jiang Baiyu kept urging Jiang Tianling to drink, and after a few cups, Jiang Tianling became completely intoxicated and passed out. Meanwhile, Fang Yuncheng waited by a bridge, offering a variety of fruits to Qi Delong. He hoped to make her taste them and then gently inquire about the identity of her beloved. Qi Delong, however, offered no answers and quickly departed without indulging him. Back at the Lantern Boudoir, the girls successfully intoxicated Third Brother's henchman.
He turned out to be merely a head coachman and had little useful information, but they did acquire a waist token for an upcoming auction, which was to be held at the Jiang Mansion. Zhe Zhi also reported an unusual finding: on the night of the Double Seventh Festival in Jiangzhou, a group of men resembling assassins had purchased a large quantity of romance novels.
Jiang Tianling speculated that the upcoming charity banquet at the Jiang Mansion, aimed at accommodating refugees from North Bay Village, might be Third Brother's opportunity for human trafficking under the guise of shelter, with a mastermind pulling the strings. He believed that whoever was most eager to shelter the refugees at the banquet might be the mastermind.
At the Jiang Mansion, Shui Wuxia prepared medicine for Shen Qingli, still troubled by the bracelet she had seen on his wrist during their last encounter. She subtly questioned him about giving or receiving gifts, particularly accessories. Shen Qingli denied ever receiving such gifts, explaining that his fans usually gave him weapons.
He then gave Shui Wuxia a durian candy and mentioned the rare and delicious cherry blossom-flavored cotton candy from the Double Seventh Festival in Jiangzhou, offering to take her to try it if given the chance. After Shui Wuxia left, she vented her frustration by playing darts, convinced that Shen Qingli was a "womanizer"—a "King of the Ocean"—who hinted at her being special while still wearing a bracelet and denying gifts.
Her suspicions solidified because he claimed he had never been to Jiangzhou, yet knew about the limited-edition cotton candy from a festival there. Ba Xi, Shui Wuxia's sister, concurred with the "womanizer" assessment, warning her that such men had "special persons" in every corner of their "oceanic" hearts. Later, Qi Delong discovered that Fang Yuncheng had secretly placed a pill in her soup, which he claimed was a beauty tonic. Enraged, she confronted him, pointing a sword at him.
The commotion drew Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling to the scene. Fang Yuncheng admitted it was a "Truth Pill" and that he merely wanted to know Qi Delong's true feelings. He then provocatively asked Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling if they wouldn't want to know the true thoughts of the people they liked. Both brothers simultaneously looked at Shui Wuxia, who, feeling awkward, quickly excused herself to go see Ba Xi.
Shui Wuxia, determined to get clear answers from Shen Qingli, asked Ba Xi to arrange a meeting. Ba Xi went to acquire a "Truth Pill" for her but, in her haste, mistakenly picked up a "Golden Phoenix Dew Pill" instead, a white, plain-looking drug. This pill had an effect that would lead to uncontrollable desire. Meanwhile, Jiang Baiyu, out shopping with Fang Yuncheng, noticed red lanterns hanging, a prearranged signal indicating that Shui Wuxia was meeting Shen Qingli.
Jiang Baiyu quickly changed into his Shen Qingli disguise and headed to the meeting spot. Ba Xi stealthily added the mistaken pill to Shen Qingli's medicine. Shui Wuxia, having given him the concoction, began to voice her deep-seated doubts: about the bracelet he wore, whether he had pledged his love to someone else, and why he had seemed so attentive to her while simultaneously keeping secrets. As she pressed him for honesty, the pill took full effect.
Shen Qingli began to sweat profusely and, losing control, made an inappropriate advance toward her. Just then, Ba Xi arrived. Witnessing the scene, Shen Qingli fled in haste. The traumatic incident shattered Shui Wuxia's lingering feelings for Shen Qingli, effectively ending any possibility of a future between them. Later that evening, Fang Yuncheng tried to apologize to Qi Delong by setting off fireworks.
Jiang Tianling, appearing on a nearby rooftop, made a comment that Qi Delong happily misinterpreted as a romantic gesture from Jiang Tianling himself, making her happy. Still shaken and upset by the earlier events, Shui Wuxia stood alone outside. Jiang Tianling saw her and joined her. He shared how, despite his rational nature, he found solace in gazing at the vast, starry sky when overwhelmed by emotions, feeling his worries dissipate.
He asked if she felt the same and then talked about astrology, mentioning his guardian star, the Star of Longevity, which symbolizes maturity and prudence. He then pointed out the next star, the Star of Blessing, representing all good things, and asked if it was her guardian star. He subtly inquired about her birthday, to which she replied it was July 17th on the lunar calendar, adding that she didn't celebrate it.
He then mused that even though the Star of Longevity and the Star of Blessing are close, they are separated by the Milky Way and can never meet, just as people, no matter how close, can find it difficult to truly understand each other. As Jiang Tianling continued to speak, Jiang Baiyu suddenly appeared, interrupting their conversation.
He sternly pulled Shui Wuxia away, demanding to know why she was out so late with his brother and accusing her of being in a bad mood, a charge she vehemently denied.
Episode 10 Recap
Jiang Baiyu found Shui Wuxia, who seemed troubled. He affectionately called her "Brother Shui" and held her hand, reassuring her that they were good buddies, almost like family, and that he wouldn't be worthy of being the Young Master of the Jiang Family if he didn't know what she was going through. He encouraged her to think positively, believing whatever she was facing wasn't as bad as it seemed.
Shui Wuxia, touched by his concern, admitted that what happened was in the past and agreed that the most important thing now was to uncover the mastermind behind the recent events. At a charity auction hosted by Jiang Mansion, the Prefect announced that the North Bay Village had been ravaged by an unusual epidemic, leaving many villagers homeless. He proposed building a refugee shelter and sought generous merchants to fund it.
To incentivize participation and ensure the refugees' well-being, the Prefect offered a five-year labor covenant to anyone willing to house the displaced, selecting the bidder who offered the most favorable conditions for the refugees. Bidding began, with Jiang Patriarch offering 50,000 taels. Jiang Baiyu observed the bids and, suspecting ulterior motives from anyone bidding unusually high, advised his father to be prepared to outbid them to secure the refugees. The Thousand Horses Hall manager then bid 80,000 taels.
The Prefect praised Thousand Horses Hall's generosity. Jiang Patriarch, encouraged by Jiang Baiyu, raised his bid to 100,000 taels, and later 120,000 taels. However, the Thousand Horses Hall manager continued to outbid him, ultimately securing the labor covenant for 150,000 taels. Suspicious of Thousand Horses Hall's abnormally high bid, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia decided to follow the manager.
They overheard Ma Ru Long expressing surprise at the 150,000 taels spent but then confidently stating that he would "earn the 150,000 taels back from these people sooner or later." Later, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia reviewed their findings, having traced Third Brother's waist token to the banquet where the Thousand Horses Hall manager was the most suspicious, linking everything to the refugees.
They noted Thousand Horses Hall's unusual foray into charity and the exorbitant price, concluding it indicated a hidden agenda, possibly related to Third Brother's previous abduction activities in Lavish Lane. They questioned how Ma Ru Long intended to profit from the refugees if his intentions were benevolent. Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling visited the Never-lose Gambling Hall, curious to experience the place Shui Wuxia frequented.
Ba Xi showed him around, explaining that the thrill of gambling came from the unknown, much like life itself. She introduced him to a divination game using Pai Gow, where he drew a "marriage card," which he quickly dismissed as superstition. Wandering off, he witnessed Zhe Zhi in a high-stakes game with Young Master Zhao, where she offered her body as a bet.
Jiang Tianling intervened, declaring it a "disgrace" to use one's body as a wager and insisting the bet was void. Zhe Zhi, however, revealed she was willing and was about to open the dice cup. Jiang Tianling’s interference caused her to lose the round. He then pulled her out of the gambling hall, urging her to respect herself and abandon the idea of gambling with her life.
Zhe Zhi was annoyed, stating she had a plan to deal with Young Master Zhao and that Jiang Tianling had ruined it, causing her further trouble. She retorted that he was "such a nag for his age." Back at Jiang Mansion, Shui Wuxia told Jiang Baiyu that without concrete evidence, the authorities wouldn't act against Ma Ru Long, and waiting would only endanger the refugees further.
She decided to go to Thousand Horses Hall alone to gather proof, even if it was risky, because she understood the plight of the homeless, having experienced it herself before finding a home at Lang Ya Pavilion. Jiang Baiyu insisted on accompanying her, assuring her that he would protect her. Together, they tracked Third Brother and his men transporting unconscious refugees in a carriage. They intercepted the carriage on the road and successfully rescued the captives.
The following day, the Prefect, accompanied by Jiang Baiyu, Shui Wuxia, and soldiers, sealed off Ma Mansion. The rescued refugees testified that they had been abducted by Ma San, not only from Thousand Horses Hall the previous night but also previously lured and kidnapped from Lavish Lane. Ma Ru Long feigned ignorance, claiming Ma San managed all of Thousand Horses Hall's operations and that he was completely unaware of these illicit activities.
However, soldiers discovered account books detailing human trafficking and slave trading in Ma San’s residence. Ma Ru Long, to protect himself, quickly offered to assist in apprehending Ma San, then publicly confronted and led to the capture of Ma San, who was furious at the betrayal. Later, Shen Qingli visited Ma San in prison. He asked about the whereabouts of the Phoenix Pin's owner, offering to ensure Ma San's safety in exchange for the truth.
Ma San refused, asserting his loyalty to Ma Ru Long who had given him "a bite to eat." Ma San then revealed he recognized Shen Qingli, hinting at his true identity as Jiang Baiyu and connecting him to the seven-year-old murder of Jiang Jue, the medical sage and Jiang Family leader. Shen Qingli admitted his true identity as Jiang Baiyu but pleaded with Ma San not to involve Shui Wuxia, emphasizing her innocence.
Ma San, having already deduced Jiang Baiyu’s connection to the case from his reaction to Jiang Jue’s name, advised him to stop investigating and to live his own life, warning him that Ma Ru Long was too dangerous an adversary. Ma San pledged not to reveal Jiang Baiyu’s identity to anyone and urged him to leave before the guards changed shifts.
That night, Ma Ru Long ordered Ma San to be killed during his transport to the prefectural prison, believing it was the only opportunity. Shui Wuxia, having learned from Ba Xi that Ma San's prison wagon would depart West Gate at dawn for the prefectural prison, prepared to intercept it. Shen Qingli, also aware of Ma Ru Long’s plan, arrived in the forest and fought off black-clad assassins who were firing arrows at the prison wagon.
Shui Wuxia managed to get Ma San out of the wagon, but he had already been struck by an arrow. Before he died, Ma San gave Shui Wuxia a perfume sachet. Shui Wuxia confronted him, asking if he was the one who killed Xiao Kai Zhen seven years ago. His subsequent death, combined with the sachet, confirmed her suspicion. Shui Wuxia was stunned and heartbroken by the revelation.
Distraught, Shui Wuxia was later confronted by Shen Qingli in her room, who tried to explain previous misunderstandings. She struggled against him, accidentally slipping and falling, causing her hair to get entangled in his clothes. In a moment of panic, Shui Wuxia drew her sword and cut her own hair to free herself from him. Shortly after, Madam Jiang arrived to visit Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia.
Fang Yuncheng attempted to deter her, but Madam Jiang insisted on seeing them, remarking that Shui Wuxia would not let them sleep so late. Shui Wuxia, noticing Madam Jiang's approach, quickly helped Shen Qingli hide. Madam Jiang, entering the room, commented on the disarray of the bed and noticed Shui Wuxia’s flustered state and sweat. Shui Wuxia quickly claimed Jiang Baiyu had gone out for a break from his studies. Madam Jiang offered her some Jiang Mansion’s special coptis pills. After Madam Jiang finally left, the hidden Shen Qingli was able to escape.
Episode 11 Recap
Old Madam Jiang brought medicine to Jiang Baiyu's room, but didn't find him there. Shui Wuxia, having just hidden Shen Qingli in her quilt, tried to dismiss Old Madam Jiang quickly. As Old Madam Jiang turned to leave, she noticed the quilt stir. Doubling back, she saw nothing amiss at first, but then decided to tidy the blanket. Lifting it, she was stunned to find Jiang Baiyu lying in the bed.
Old Madam Jiang angrily questioned Shui Wuxia, reminding her that she had claimed Jiang Baiyu was out playing, and demanded to know why he was in her bed. Shui Wuxia stammered, unable to explain, leading Old Madam Jiang to believe they had an improper affair and had shared a bed. Furious, Old Madam Jiang grabbed Jiang Baiyu by the ear and dragged him away.
Shui Wuxia, bewildered, wondered how Shen Qingli had turned into Jiang Baiyu, and when Shen Qingli had left. She glanced at the open window, realizing Shen Qingli must have slipped out that way. Determined to get to the bottom of the matter, Old Madam Jiang sent Nanny A'Chang to question Shui Wuxia, while she went to confront Jiang Baiyu. Nanny A'Chang found Shui Wuxia, explaining that both she and Old Madam Jiang had seen everything.
She warned Shui Wuxia that having an improper affair with an employer while serving as a mentor would ruin her reputation, ensuring she would never find another position after leaving the Jiang family. She urged Shui Wuxia to confess, promising to put in a good word. Shui Wuxia denied any affair, pointing out her usual disagreements with Jiang Baiyu. A'Chang then speculated that Jiang Baiyu must have been the one to initiate.
Pressed, Shui Wuxia fabricated a story, claiming it was a misunderstanding: Jiang Baiyu was drunk and stumbled into the wrong bed, and he was "not her type." Meanwhile, Jiang Baiyu, wanting to protect Shui Wuxia's reputation, took all the blame, insisting he was merely drunk and had accidentally fallen asleep in her bed, and that he would "never fall in love with her" (though he then added she was "rather pretty").
Old Madam Jiang, observing their mutual protectiveness, realized they secretly harbored feelings for each other despite their denials. She and A'Chang then agreed to find ways to facilitate their relationship. Later, Hou Chang'an commended Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia for successfully apprehending Ma San, presenting them with a banner that read "Relentless Truth Seekers." However, he informed them that Ma San had been killed in a revenge attack while being transported, and the human trafficking case was officially closed.
Both Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia were skeptical, arguing that it was highly improbable for refugees to commit murder under official escort, especially after escaping captivity. They suspected foul play. When Hou Chang'an dismissed their concerns, warning against speculation without evidence, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia secretly resolved to continue investigating Ma San's death, believing Ma Ru Long was responsible for silencing him. Shui Wuxia had an unsettling dream about her brother's murder, stirring painful memories.
She questioned when Ma San had begun working for Ma Ru Long and if his death was connected to her brother's. Jiang Baiyu, overhearing her distressed sleep talking, mistakenly thought she was murmuring Shen Qingli's name and felt a pang of guilt. Meanwhile, at the Ma Mansion, Ma Ru Long discussed his next moves with an associate. He acknowledged the Jiang family's interference, stating he would have crushed them if not for their power, but vowed to recover his losses.
Given that they could no longer move refugees, he decided to test their experimental drugs at Thousand Horses Hall. He ordered his subordinate to procure "green vitriol oil" as a contingency in case of fatalities and to accelerate the drug's development. Separately, a new figure, having replaced Ma San, berated Ma San's former subordinate for invoking a dead man's name.
The new leader revealed that Ma San had been "fooled by those lads from Jiang Family" and mocked his downfall, wondering if Jiang Baiyu was behind it. He then impatiently demanded updates on the drug's progress from the person developing it. Hou Chang'an then assigned the group a new task: market regulation. He instructed them to examine years of counterfeit cases to sharpen their judgment over three days, preparing them to expose shoddy goods across Chong'an City.
The team immediately fanned out to investigate the marketplace. Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia discovered boots made of high-quality Goryeo paper cleverly disguised as leather, and watered-down liquor; Shui Wuxia's hands got stained with black dye from the boots. Jiang Tianling and Qi Delong found candles made of mud instead of mutton fat, while Fang Yuncheng exposed facial mask powder made from chicken blood instead of cinnabar, and even fake copper coins given as change.
Jiang Tianling promptly informed the Municipal Trade Bureau, who promised to send officials to deal with the culprits. As they discussed their findings, Shui Wuxia suddenly felt dizzy and her vision blurred, causing her to almost fall. Jiang Baiyu swiftly caught her, concerned about her eyes. Back at the mansion, a physician examined Shui Wuxia, but her pulse seemed normal, and the cause of her sudden, severe blurry vision and discomfort remained a mystery.
He could only prescribe some internal and external medicine to alleviate her symptoms. Jiang Baiyu, seeing Shui Wuxia struggle to discern shapes, felt immense guilt, believing he was responsible for her current state, which he thought was due to sleeplessness and a broken heart. He vowed to personally care for her until her eyesight recovered. Shui Wuxia, frustrated by her inability to see and her stalled investigation into her brother's death, lamented her uselessness.
Jiang Tianling, concerned, brought Shui Wuxia a custom-made walking stick, with special non-slip features to prevent falls, and Shui Wuxia thanked him for his thoughtfulness. However, Jiang Baiyu intervened, gently taking the stick from Jiang Tianling and stating he would take care of Shui Wuxia. He then produced a wheelchair he had prepared and helped her into it. Initially, Shui Wuxia protested Jiang Baiyu's fast pace, accusing him of retaliation.
Jiang Baiyu reassured her, explaining that since she couldn't see, her mind might be filled with fear. He suggested she embrace this temporary blindness as an opportunity to escape external distractions and become more introspective, just as she often taught him to find the positive in everything. He then offered to take her on a tour of the Jiang Mansion, as she hadn't had a proper chance to explore it.
He wheeled her to his late father's courtyard, which was filled with peach trees, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. He shared memories of his father planting the trees because his mother loved them, and how the place felt as if his parents were still there. Shui Wuxia confided in him about her recurring dream of a loved one she couldn't speak to before waking.
Jiang Baiyu, still under the impression she was thinking of Shen Qingli, blamed himself for her nightmares. He then suggested they sit under the peach tree, where Shui Wuxia soon drifted off to sleep. Jiang Baiyu sat beside her, gently holding her hand.
Episode 12 Recap
Shui Wuxia experienced another nightmare, reliving the moment Ma San handed her a perfume sachet before his death. She awoke with a start, reaching for the sachet tucked beneath her pillow. Upon smelling it, she detected an earthy scent. The next morning, Shui Wuxia consulted a physician about the sachet. The physician opened it and identified a herb called purpurine, explaining that long-term human exposure to it invariably leads to blindness. He suspected the sachet was a counterfeit.
Fang Yuncheng then examined the sachet and noted the lily stitches used for the hem, identifying them as a signature technique of Jade Parlor. The group decided to investigate the establishment. At Jade Parlor, the owner denied using purpurine in their products, asserting they only used a rare herb called eclipta prostrata. He suggested that other merchants might be deceptively substituting eclipta prostrata with purpurine. Jiang Baiyu challenged the owner to compare his genuine sachet with the one in question.
The owner reluctantly presented one, which Jiang Baiyu quickly opened, revealing purpurine inside instead of eclipta prostrata. The owner, shocked, grabbed another sachet and found the same discrepancy, expressing disbelief. He stated that his wife was solely responsible for procuring all the herbal ingredients, casting a suspicious glance at her as she appeared nervous. Jiang Tianling then inquired if anyone else had access to the herbs besides the owner and his wife.
The owner recalled Liu Pang, who was in charge of inventory and dispensing herbs, but mentioned he had been fired for having "sticky fingers." Leaving Jade Parlor, they found Fang Yuncheng consoling a man, who turned out to be Liu Pang. Jiang Tianling asked if Liu Pang had handled the herbs at Jade Parlor. Liu Pang insisted he lacked such authority, explaining that only the Boss Lady had the right to manage those matters, and he was merely a clerk.
They returned to Jade Parlor, where the Boss Lady, upon hearing their threat to report to the authorities, confessed. She admitted that her family's brother was ill, and her husband was too stingy to provide for his treatment, so she had sold the eclipta prostrata to Manager Sun of Thousand Horses Hall. The group realized the connection to Thousand Horses Hall and decided to delay their investigation to allow Thousand Horses Hall to lower their guard.
Shui Wuxia's eyesight continued to trouble her. Jiang Baiyu took her to a specialty shop known for imperial and tribute items, having heard they recently acquired an effective eye medicine. The owner proudly presented "eye drops from Qiang State," purified from glacial water, claiming it could restore sight even to the completely blind for three hundred gold. Despite Shui Wuxia's skepticism, Jiang Baiyu purchased the drops without hesitation.
Observing Jiang Baiyu's generous spending, the owner then introduced a "pure copper fancy lock," a unique item made from seven layers of tough wild boar skin, boasting that once locked, no one could open it. Jiang Baiyu, intrigued, decided to try it, and he and Shui Wuxia found themselves locked together. To their dismay, the owner casually informed them that the key was still en route from Ryukyu Kingdom.
Returning to the Jiang Mansion, still locked together, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia were met with amusement from Old Madam Jiang and Jiang Tianling. Old Madam Jiang summoned the best locksmith in Chong'an City, who, after several failed attempts, declared the lock unbreakable, attributing their predicament to "God's will."
Undeterred, Old Madam Jiang then called for the cook, who, using his legendary knife forged from a meteorite and rumored to predate the Jiang family and even have slain the cow of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl legend, swiftly severed the lock. Later, Jiang Baiyu meticulously applied the glacial eye drops for Shui Wuxia, who felt her eyes improving. He gazed at her, remarking that her eyes reminded him of someone, but quickly dismissed it as "a stranger."
The next morning, Shui Wuxia informed Jiang Baiyu that she could handle applying the eye drops herself. During their class, Instructor Hou commended the students for their observational skills. They discussed how the counterfeit sachet case at Jade Parlor was likely just the beginning, potentially unraveling a wider network of illicit profit chains, and that Shui Wuxia was certainly not the first or last victim.
Instructor Hou urged them to pursue the truth thoroughly, emphasizing that "seeking truth is the essential quality of a qualified inspector." He encouraged them to proceed with their investigations, promising his unwavering support should they encounter any danger. Meanwhile, Qi Delong received a letter demanding a payment of one thousand taels for her father's debt, threatening his life if she failed to meet them at Mingwa Alley.
Fang Yuncheng witnessed the debt collectors intimidating Qi Delong and resolved to help her raise the money. He attempted to sell his homemade "Pretty as Flower Cream" at Lantern Boudoir, but struggled to attract customers, who were skeptical of a man selling beauty products and wary of the unusually low price, fearing it was an inferior product. Qi Delong, seeing Fang Yuncheng's struggles, stepped forward to champion his product.
She confidently declared that she used his skincare, showcasing her visibly improved complexion as "living proof" of its effectiveness. Her endorsement instantly transformed Fang Yuncheng's fortunes, sparking a flurry of eager purchases. He diligently explained the proper usage of his cosmetics, even offering free beauty services to the growing crowd. To further demonstrate the cream's efficacy, Fang Yuncheng performed a live makeup demonstration on Qi Delong, enhancing her beauty and drawing even more customers.
Later, Ba Xi visited Shui Wuxia, who assured her that her eyes were feeling much better. Jiang Baiyu proudly showed off the protective "crash pads" he had installed around the room and a "Four-Wheeler" he brought to help Shui Wuxia get around. Ba Xi then presented Shui Wuxia with a "Jade Face Roller," claiming it could promote physical development, heal wounds, and enhance beauty.
Ba Xi suggested that instead of closely monitoring Thousand Horses Hall, they should simply administer a "Truth Pill" to force confessions. When asked where she obtained such a pill, Ba Xi inadvertently revealed that Fang Yuncheng had purchased it, and she had once secretly given it to Shen Qingli. Shui Wuxia immediately realized that Ba Xi might have been the one who had drugged her previously.
Episode 13 Recap
Jiang Tianling stood amidst the pear blossoms, recalling Shui Wuxia's birthday on July 17th, which was tomorrow. He pondered what to do. His father approached, curious about his absorption. Jiang Tianling replied that he was saddened by the withering pear blossoms. His father asked if they were still monitoring Thousand Horses Hall, and Jiang Tianling confirmed they were not. Sensing his son's distress, his father asked what was on his mind.
Jiang Tianling then inquired about how his father courted his mother, remarking that his mother was very particular about traditions and celebrations, while his father seemed unromantic, never even acknowledging her birthday. His father chuckled, explaining that he and his mother shared a private world, which is why Jiang Tianling wouldn't know. He reminisced about special gifts he gave his mother, like a conch-shaped Xun and a square-shaped watermelon, which, though not extravagant, brought out her joyful, childlike smile.
He proudly stated that he was the only one who could evoke such happiness in her. Inspired, Jiang Tianling decided to craft a unique gift for Shui Wuxia himself. Later, he rehearsed various ways to present the gift, trying to find a balance between being too casual and too formal, ultimately hoping Shui Wuxia would appreciate the hopes and dreams he poured into it. Meanwhile, Jiang Baiyu visited a medicine shop.
The owner explained that while Truth Pill and Midnight Rendezvous both appeared white, their effects differed greatly: one compelled truth-telling, the other induced confusion and desire. Jiang Baiyu realized that Ba Xi must have administered the wrong medicine to him previously. As he prepared to leave, the owner stopped him, dismissing the Truth Pill as a hoax but adamantly claiming the Midnight Rendezvous was potent, citing "That Hong from the end of the village" as proof.
Jiang Baiyu, confirming the potency, bought all the Midnight Rendezvous pills, then beat the owner and confiscated both types of medicine. He then confronted Ba Xi, holding up the two pills and asking her to identify them. Ba Xi confidently pointed to the round one, identifying it as the Truth Pill. Jiang Baiyu countered that the shop owner called it Midnight Rendezvous, an aphrodisiac, and pretended to be outraged, threatening to demand an explanation from the owner.
Realizing her grave error, Ba Xi tearfully confessed her mistake to Shui Wuxia, lamenting that Shen Qingli’s inappropriate actions were due to the drug, not his true character, and that she had unjustly slapped him and given him the cold shoulder. Shui Wuxia, now understanding the misunderstanding, instructed Ba Xi to hang lanterns. If Shen Qingli saw them, he was to come to Jiang Mansion so she could explain the medicine mix-up and also seek clarification on past events.
Shui Wuxia, back at her residence, selected a chamomile-scented balm, preferring its subtle fragrance. She murmured to herself about her past encounter with Shen Qingli, regretting her impulsive slap and not allowing him to explain, worried that her actions made her seem aggressive or cold. She wondered if he would still come. At that moment, Jiang Baiyu entered. Noticing her wet hair, he reached for a cloth to dry it.
Still struggling with her impaired vision, Shui Wuxia reflexively punched him, accusing him of malicious intent. Jiang Baiyu, wincing in pain, explained he only wished to help dry her hair, offering the cloth as proof. He reminded her of previous instances where she had misjudged his intentions. Shui Wuxia then posed a hypothetical question: if someone misunderstood him, slapped him without cause, and denied him any chance to explain, would he still wish to see that person again?
Jiang Baiyu firmly replied no, unless he truly liked her. Hearing this, Shui Wuxia felt a renewed sense of hope that Shen Qingli would indeed arrive. Meanwhile, Fang Yuncheng approached Qi Delong's creditors, offering to repay her father's debt. He explained that he knew his current offering was insufficient but pledged to repay the full amount, insisting the debt be transferred to him to spare Qi Delong, who struggled to earn money.
The creditors, however, mocked his "lovestruck" display and hurled insults at Qi Delong. Fang Yuncheng defended her honor, only to be brutally beaten by the men. They gave him two days to come up with the full sum.
Later, as Qi Delong gently applied ointment to Fang Yuncheng's bruised face, she told him she was no longer angry with him, adding that his efforts, though painful, had caused "someone else" to try and make her happy, but she refused to reveal who. Later that evening, Shen Qingli appeared on the rooftop where Shui Wuxia was waiting.
He confessed he knew she didn't want to see him, but after hearing about her eye injury and seeing the lanterns at the Never-lose Gambling Hall, he felt compelled to check on her well-being, even if the lanterns weren't intended for him. Shui Wuxia stopped him from leaving, explaining she couldn't get down alone and had something important to tell him. She apologized for misjudging him at the gambling hall.
Shen Qingli, however, was still burdened by guilt, calling himself "scum" for his behavior. Shui Wuxia reassured him it wasn't his fault, explaining that Ba Xi had accidentally substituted the Truth Pill with Midnight Rendezvous. Shui Wuxia then asked him directly if he was a "womanizer"—someone with a heart like the ocean, using girls like fish, unfaithful, and prone to lying.
She confronted him about wearing a bracelet, which she believed was a token of love for another, and his claim of never visiting Jiang Province, despite knowing about the special cotton candy there. Shen Qingli clarified that he had indeed been to Jiang Province and bought bracelets, one of which he intended for a certain girl. However, he had accidentally dropped it on the rooftop that day, leading to her misunderstanding. Shui Wuxia realized her accusations were unfounded.
Shen Qingli then turned the question to her, asking if her concern for him meant she had feelings for him. Their conversation was abruptly interrupted by Fang Yuncheng, who appeared, asking to borrow ointment. Moments later, Fang Yuncheng returned, concerned that Jiang Baiyu might have left Shui Wuxia stranded on the roof. Jiang Baiyu then intervened, pulling Fang Yuncheng down and playfully scolding him.
Fang Yuncheng explained he was merely testing his Qinggong skills, wondering if his impaired vision affected them, prompting laughter from Jiang Baiyu. Shortly after, Jiang Baiyu brought pastries to Shui Wuxia, complimenting her smile. She, however, insisted she wasn't smiling but merely contorting her face after drinking bitter medicine. He offered her mixed nuts pastries, which she disliked, preferring red bean paste. He then offered astragalus tea, which she also rejected, explaining it was for women with stomach cramps.
Jiang Baiyu, disheartened, told her he only wanted to be kind. Shui Wuxia then asked him to stop being so kind, citing their complete lack of chemistry, saying, "What you think is a delicacy might be poison for me." Jiang Baiyu, still hoping for a connection, suggested they try a "Five-Question Compatibility Test" he got from Ba Xi.
As they went through the questions about preferences (mountain or sea, sunny or rainy, summer or winter, spirit or hot tea, son or daughter), their answers were consistently opposite, confirming their incompatibility.
Episode 14 Recap
Shui Wuxia and Shen Qingli sat on the rooftop where Shui Wuxia initiated a compatibility test with five questions. Despite their different answers to the first four questions, Shui Wuxia found Shen Qingli more interesting than Jiang Baiyu, whom she considered incompatible. Jiang Tianling then called out for Shui Wuxia, prompting Shen Qingli to lead her away. Earlier that day, Qi Delong, having seen a note in Jiang Tianling's book, mistakenly believed he was planning a meeting with her.
She dressed up and waited for him at a pavilion. Jiang Tianling, searching for Shui Wuxia, found Qi Delong at the pavilion and called out "Lady Shui," tapping her shoulder. Realizing Jiang Tianling's efforts were for Shui Wuxia's birthday, Qi Delong felt dejected. Jiang Tianling told her that Fang Yuncheng always put her first and had feelings for her. Upon hearing this, Qi Delong retreated to her room, ignoring Fang Yuncheng's attempts to follow her.
Shen Qingli led Shui Wuxia to a beautiful garden filled with flowers. Remembering the scent of daisies on her, he presented her with a bouquet. Shui Wuxia was deeply touched, explaining that only her brother knew her fondness for daisies and would buy them for her birthday. After his death, no one else remembered, and her birthdays were no longer joyful until now. Shen Qingli promised to learn all her preferences and treat every day as her birthday.
Shui Wuxia then expressed her wish to see his true face. Shen Qingli gently covered her eyes and removed his mask, allowing her to feel his features. They then shared a romantic kiss. The next morning, Shui Wuxia awoke to find Jiang Baiyu by her bedside. He was happy to see her eyesight had improved significantly. Old Madam Jiang, accompanied by A Chang, arrived to bring Shui Wuxia some lycium ruthenicum, meant to aid her recovery.
Seeing the two embracing, Old Madam Jiang was pleased. She quickly handed over the medicine and left, instructing A Chang to prepare for an important event in a few days. Later, Ba Xi discovered that Thousand Horses Hall had received several carts of green vitriol, known as Corpse Decomposer. Suspecting Thousand Horses Hall's involvement in a murder, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia decided to investigate. They ambushed two henchmen, stole their clothes, and infiltrated Thousand Horses Hall.
Jiang Tianling and Fang Yuncheng were sent to report to the officials, while Ba Xi and Qi Delong acted as lookouts. Inside, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia witnessed Ma Ru Long testing drugs on live humans. They intervened and were quickly surrounded. Jiang Baiyu scattered silver notes, distracting the guards and allowing Jiang Tianling and the officials to arrive and arrest Ma Ru Long and his men.
The Prefect assured them that with the evidence and eyewitness accounts, Ma Ru Long's conviction was certain, and a thorough investigation would be conducted. Afterward, Jiang Baiyu reported the case to his instructor, Hou Chang'an. He explained that the evidence and support from Chong'an's top pharmacists and doctors would ensure Ma Ru Long's conviction. Hou Chang'an, despite his annoyance at their risky actions, acknowledged their thorough investigation and granted them a few days off.
Shui Wuxia, noticing a daisy bracelet on Ma Ru Long's drug package, wondered if it was connected to her late brother. Ba Xi reassured her that it was a good sign, confirming they were on the right path to exposing Ma Ru Long's schemes. Zhe Zhi noticed Jiang Baiyu's unusual happiness and suspected a romantic development with Shui Wuxia. Jiang Baiyu shyly admitted he had kissed her, evading Zhe Zhi's eager questions.
He then asked Zhe Zhi to help him find someone to customize a replacement for a lost bracelet from a matching pair he had bought. Ba Xi was also happy to hear about the blossoming romance between Shui Wuxia and Shen Qingli. Old Madam Jiang, having seen the growing affection between Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, called them to her chambers.
She presented betrothal gifts from the Jiang family: an ancient sandalwood comb, a round bronze mirror, silver scissors from Bing Zhou City, and ancient coins from the Western Regions. Jiang Baiyu, surprised, asked who the gifts were for, and Old Madam Jiang replied, "You two."
Episode 15 Recap
Old Madam Jiang joyfully announced that Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu were to be married in three days, presenting a lavish array of betrothal gifts from the Jiang Mansion. Both Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu were utterly astonished, with Jiang Baiyu asking, "Who's getting married?" When Old Madam Jiang revealed it was them, they were speechless, prompting Old Madam Jiang to assume they were overwhelmed with happiness.
Shui Wuxia quickly protested, stating that she and Jiang Baiyu had no romantic feelings for each other and therefore could not marry. Old Madam Jiang reassured her, telling her not to worry about her future development or Hai Tang, as she had already spoken to them.
Shui Wuxia insisted that she would not dare to aspire to someone like Young Master Jiang and had no improper thoughts, but Old Madam Jiang dismissed her claims as shyness, citing their intimate interactions within the mansion as evidence of their hidden affection. She proudly declared that she had their horoscopes matched, confirming them as a destined union, and set the wedding date for three days later, emphasizing her firm belief in destiny and divination.
Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling was deeply saddened by the news of Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu's impending marriage. He retreated to his room, unable to comprehend why Shui Wuxia would choose Jiang Baiyu. A gift he intended to give her fell from his hand, unnoticed. Shui Wuxia initially thought of simply telling Old Madam Jiang that she and Jiang Baiyu were incompatible.
However, Jiang Baiyu, disguised as Shen Qingli, knowing Old Madam Jiang's deep belief in fate, proposed a more elaborate scheme: they should manipulate fate to make her believe that their union was ill-fated. Shui Wuxia eagerly agreed to this strategy and sought Jiang Baiyu's further guidance. Old Madam Jiang was initially ecstatic about the upcoming marriage, praising Shui Wuxia as a lovely addition to the family and a perfect match for Jiang Baiyu.
However, her joyful mood quickly soured when a servant reported a flock of crows cawing incessantly in the garden, a known bad omen. Shortly after, another servant delivered even more unsettling news: all the goldfish in the pond had suddenly died without any discernible cause. Old Madam Jiang grew increasingly worried, interpreting these bizarre occurrences as clear signs of impending misfortune.
Convinced that these events were linked to the wedding, she hurried to the Buddha Hall to pray for a good omen for the couple. As Old Madam Jiang prayed, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia continued their scheme. Shui Wuxia felt a pang of guilt for deceiving Old Madam Jiang, who had always been kind to them, but Jiang Baiyu urged her to continue, offering to take all the blame if necessary.
He then proposed escalating their efforts by having lightning strike the Buddha Hall. Following his plan, they carefully installed a high-purity copper wire on the roof of the Buddha Hall to attract lightning. Soon enough, thunder boomed, and lightning struck the altar. Old Madam Jiang rushed back to the scene, while Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia also arrived, feigning ignorance.
Concerned by Jiang Baiyu's apparent madness, Old Madam Jiang summoned a Great Master, who diagnosed him as being possessed by an evil spirit. Jiang Baiyu was tied to his bed, appearing to be suffering from heat. After everyone else left, Shui Wuxia stayed to fan him, and they quietly chatted about their plan. When Old Madam Jiang and the Great Master returned, Jiang Baiyu was still "delusional."
Seeing her grandson's worsening condition, Jiang Baiyu (still acting) pretended to mistake Old Madam Jiang for Shui Wuxia. Shui Wuxia seized the opportunity, claiming that her family had told her that a meteor seemed to have fallen on the day she was born. She suggested that this meteor might have secretly altered her fate, making her inherently incompatible with Jiang Baiyu.
She proposed that this "changed fate" was the true cause of all the strange occurrences, and offered to cancel the engagement if it would save Jiang Baiyu. Heartbroken but desperate, Old Madam Jiang reluctantly agreed to dissolve the betrothal. Shortly after the agreement to dissolve the betrothal, Jiang Baiyu miraculously "recovered," much to Old Madam Jiang's overwhelming relief and joy.

Shui Wuxia felt a deep sense of guilt for deceiving Old Madam Jiang, especially since Jiang Baiyu seemed to return to normal after their engagement was canceled. Jiang Tianling, perturbed by the abrupt end to Jiang Baiyu’s engagement with Shui Wuxia after only two days, confronted Jiang Baiyu. He questioned when Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia had fallen in love and how they could succumb to a notion of "destiny" if their love was true.
Jiang Baiyu explained that he believed destiny brought them together the first time they met, but also tragically prevented their marriage. He affirmed his conviction that one day, the Jiang Mansion would again be adorned with lanterns and red satin for their union. He pledged his lifelong love and devotion to Shui Wuxia alone, vowing to become a better man worthy of her, unfazed by treacherous paths or societal judgment.
Jiang Tianling then urged Jiang Baiyu to remember his own words. Later, Shui Wuxia met with Shen Qingli, mentioning the annulled engagement and her lingering feelings of regret towards Old Madam Jiang. Shen Qingli reassured her, stating that Old Madam Jiang was a good person with heavenly protection who would be fine, and Jiang Baiyu would eventually find a suitable match.
Realizing Shui Wuxia was hungry after a long and busy day, he presented her with a dessert, claiming it was the best in Chong'an. Shui Wuxia, however, recognized it as a delicacy from the Jiang Mansion. As they sat overlooking Chong'an, Shui Wuxia remarked on how gentle the city felt since she met him.
Shen Qingli, finding her suggestions for typical couple activities uninteresting, surprised her by creating a "starry sky" using his cloak and a hidden projection, a gift he declared belonged only to her. The next day, Jiang Baiyu awoke with a fever and cold, claiming he caught a chill after being exposed to heat and wind the previous night while studying.
Shui Wuxia found this explanation questionable, wondering how someone so diligent in their studies during the day could fall ill from a mere gust of wind at night. Nanny A'Chang arrived with preserved fruits and noticed Jiang Baiyu's condition. Soon after, Old Madam Jiang and Master Jiang rushed to his side. Master Jiang diagnosed Jiang Baiyu with a deficiency in blood and Qi, noting an unstable pulse.
When Old Madam Jiang suggested a full body examination, Jiang Baiyu hastily refused, hiding a secret injury. Master Jiang then left to prepare a supplement prescription. Old Madam Jiang questioned Shui Wuxia about Jiang Baiyu's strange symptoms, such as inexplicable sweating, fear of cold, anxiety, chest distress, shortness of breath, and once even submerging his face in a washbasin to cool off.
Old Madam Jiang, troubled by these symptoms and the prior bad omens, concluded that the "inter-restriction" between Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia was worsening despite the canceled engagement, contrary to her hope that annulment would normalize things. Jiang Baiyu quickly tried to dismiss his symptoms as seasonal changes or the result of potent supplements he took as a child, urging Old Madam Jiang not to overthink it.
Old Madam Jiang, concerned for their well-being, remained unconvinced and decided that Shui Wuxia must leave the Jiang Mansion. Old Madam Jiang then spoke with Shui Wuxia, explaining that while she acknowledged Shui Wuxia was not an ordinary person and had been beneficial to Jiang Baiyu, she had no choice but to ask her to leave due to their destined inter-restriction.
She promised to explain the situation to Hai Tang at Lang Ya Pavilion, ensure Shui Wuxia's contract was redeemed with full payment, and protect her status, even offering additional compensation for whatever Shui Wuxia desired. Jiang Baiyu, overhearing this, burst in, pleading with his grandmother to let Shui Wuxia stay, insisting his illness was unrelated to her.
Old Madam Jiang reminded him of the misfortunes during their engagement and reiterated her belief in fate, refusing to risk his health as he was the only heir. Shui Wuxia intervened, announcing her decision to move back to the wing room today and leave the Jiang Mansion tomorrow. After Old Madam Jiang departed, Jiang Baiyu assured Shui Wuxia he would find a way for her to stay.
Later, Shui Wuxia, Fang Yuncheng, Qi Delong, and Jiang Tianling gathered at the Lantern Boudoir for a farewell dinner. Jiang Baiyu was conspicuously absent; Nanny A'Chang had intercepted him, explaining that Old Madam Jiang had forbidden him from seeing Shui Wuxia again, stating they did not need to meet, as Shui Wuxia would leave the Jiang Mansion early the next morning. Reluctantly, the others began drinking without Jiang Baiyu.
Qi Delong suggested a game where they each shared their happiest moment and biggest regret with Shui Wuxia. Qi Delong shared that her happiest memory was being able to constantly compete with Shui Wuxia, considering her a lifelong friend and opponent who spurred her to improve.
Her biggest regret was always treating Shui Wuxia as a rival, despite consistently having the upper hand over her, even though Shui Wuxia was the only person who had consistently been by her side over the years. Fang Yuncheng expressed his regret that Qi Delong had been replaced as Jiang Baiyu's maid.
His happiest memory, however, was seeing Shui Wuxia heal Jiang Baiyu's heart, bringing back his optimism and hope after years of feigning foolishness to mask his pain from an accident seven years prior. Jiang Tianling revealed his happiness in witnessing Jiang Baiyu's progress and understanding his unique teaching methods, realizing that educating children is not just about lecturing, but guiding them with unique approaches. He then confessed to having had feelings for Shui Wuxia, but lamented that it was now too late.
Episode 17 Recap
In the early morning, Shui Wuxia's luggage was packed, ready for her departure from Jiang Mansion. Jiang Baiyu was confined and unable to see her off, while Jiang Tianling was still recovering from a night of heavy drinking. Only Qi Delong and Fang Yuncheng were there to bid Shui Wuxia farewell.
Fang Yuncheng had prepared sober-up tea for Qi Delong, who, after receiving a letter stating her father would arrive in Chong'an in a few days, crumpled it in a state of panic. Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling awoke to find Zhe Zhi beside him, both equally shocked. Jiang Tianling, disheveled, frantically apologized, while Zhe Zhi calmly dressed and left. Later, Ba Xi angrily confronted Shui Wuxia, frustrated that she was seemingly forced to return to Lang Ya Pavilion.
Ba Xi wanted to "settle the score" with the Jiang Family, feeling they had unfairly blamed Shui Wuxia for Jiang Baiyu's self-inflicted health issues. She emphasized that Shui Wuxia could not leave, especially with Ma Ru Long's case approaching trial and the truth about Shui Wuxia's brother's murder soon to be revealed.
Shui Wuxia calmly revealed her plan: she had sent a letter to Lang Ya Pavilion's branch in Chong'an, hoping to find a local employer from the upcoming register list, which would allow her to stay. Back at the Jiang Mansion, Jiang Baiyu was deeply distraught by Shui Wuxia's departure. Fang Yuncheng attempted to comfort him, but Jiang Baiyu angrily pushed him away, demanding to be left alone.
Zhe Zhi later brought a bracelet to Jiang Baiyu, but he dismissed it as meaningless without Shui Wuxia. The new maid from Lang Ya Pavilion, Shu Jing, arrived to mentor Jiang Baiyu. He immediately rejected her, despite Old Madam Jiang's presence, offering various excuses: Shu Jing wasn't as talented as Shui Wuxia, wasn't pretty, was sharp-tongued, and her name ("Shu Jing," meaning to lose everything in his interpretation) had an inauspicious connotation.
Shu Jing, however, logically refuted each of his points, asserting her competence. Despite Old Madam Jiang's persistence, Jiang Baiyu remained defiant, eventually telling Shu Jing, and then Fang Yuncheng, to leave his room. Jiang Baiyu's continued despair deeply concerned Old Madam Jiang. Shu Jing later attempted to organize Jiang Baiyu's study, inadvertently removing the bookmarks Shui Wuxia had made.
This act enraged Jiang Baiyu, who yelled at Shu Jing for touching his belongings and angrily recalled his past interactions with Shui Wuxia. Old Madam Jiang observed Jiang Baiyu talking to himself for two hours, seemingly in a state of hysteria, prompting her to seek solace from Buddha. Jiang Baiyu stared at a flower wall, momentarily mistaking Shu Jing for Shui Wuxia, and lashed out, reflecting his deep emotional turmoil.
Shu Jing expressed her understanding of Jiang Baiyu's deep attachment to Shui Wuxia, acknowledging her inability to compare to her predecessor's creative approach, but affirmed her commitment to her duties as a Lang Ya maid. Shu Jing informed Jiang Baiyu that Shui Wuxia had failed to find an employer in Chong'an and was about to return to Lang Ya Pavilion that very moment. She discreetly allowed Jiang Baiyu to rush out.
Shui Wuxia, already at the carriage, was reminded by Ba Xi and a senior sister from Lang Ya Pavilion about the strict rules: failure to find an employer meant immediate return, or expulsion from the pavilion. As Shui Wuxia contemplated her predicament, Jiang Baiyu arrived in the pouring rain. He grabbed her hand and declared, "Come home with me." Jiang Baiyu pulled Shui Wuxia with him and made her kneel before Old Madam Jiang's room.
He passionately pleaded with his grandmother to grant their wish. He confessed that their separation had felt like a dagger to his heart, revealing how deeply they had become "each other's shadows." He argued that he would rather not live a "safe" life like a walking corpse than be without her, declaring Shui Wuxia as the "love of his life."
He explained that he had never truly been happy until he met Shui Wuxia, who gave him confidence and illuminated his life like a ray of light. He threatened that if Shui Wuxia left, he would revert to his old, "bad Jiang Baiyu" self. Old Madam Jiang questioned their commitment, given the many bad omens and the short duration of their acquaintance, asking if they could truly endure if things worsened. Jiang Baiyu immediately affirmed his commitment.
Shui Wuxia, though privately wondering if his declaration was a genuine expression of love or merely a dramatic act to help her stay, also affirmed her commitment to remain with him. Seeing their resolute determination, Old Madam Jiang finally relented, and as they stood up, the rain stopped, which she took as a sign of divine will.
Back in Jiang Baiyu's room, Shui Wuxia, to thank Jiang Baiyu for allowing her to return to the Jiang Mansion, decided to redesign his study schedule and implement updated punishment methods to ensure he became well-behaved. They exchanged smiles.
Episode 18 Recap
Following their agreement to stage an engagement, Old Madam Jiang prayed to Buddha for blessings for Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu. A'Chang, Old Madam Jiang's attendant, assured her that Buddha would grant her wish. However, A'Chang suggested they inform Pavilion Master Qiu of Lang Ya Pavilion, as Shui Wuxia's sudden return to the Jiang Mansion violated Lang Ya Pavilion rules, and her "engagement" to Jiang Baiyu required notification to avoid disrespecting Lang Ya Pavilion. Old Madam Jiang agreed.
Meanwhile, Shui Wuxia missed Shen Qingli, lamenting that his unpredictable schedule and lack of a fixed address made it difficult to find him. Later, Jiang Baiyu, still dressed as himself, told Shui Wuxia that he heard a bird chirping constantly in the yard. Shui Wuxia heard nothing and suggested he go to bed. After she left her room to investigate, Jiang Baiyu quickly changed into Shen Qingli's clothes and returned.
Shui Wuxia greeted "Shen Qingli" coolly, but he apologized for his absence, promising to always be there for her. Shui Wuxia mentioned that she was able to stay at the Jiang Mansion because she and Jiang Baiyu had pretended to be a couple in front of Old Madam Jiang, meaning they would have to maintain the facade in public. She asked him not to be angry. "
Shen Qingli" claimed he wasn't upset, as he wouldn't have been able to see her otherwise. When Shui Wuxia asked if he would mind them acting intimately, even holding hands or hugging, "Shen Qingli" remained calm, saying he understood her situation and saw it as a minor issue. Annoyed by his lack of jealousy, Shui Wuxia pressed him, reminding him of Jiang Baiyu's reputation and asking if he felt no anger or worry.
Finally, "Shen Qingli" feigned indignation, threatening to settle the score with Jiang Baiyu immediately. Satisfied, Shui Wuxia softened, and "Shen Qingli" gave her a bracelet, saying he would feel reassured after "locking her up." At dinner, Old Madam Jiang asked Jiang Baiyu to move so Shui Wuxia could sit beside her. She declared that Shui Wuxia would eat with the family from then on and address her as "Grandma."
To maintain their charade, Shui Wuxia served Jiang Baiyu mushrooms, which he disliked. Jiang Baiyu retaliated by serving her leeks, which she also disliked. Jiang Tianling, feeling left out, said he wasn't hungry and left the table to study, despite Old Madam Jiang's protest. Meanwhile, Qi Delong's father appeared at the Jiang Mansion, demanding that Qi Delong return home to marry Wang San, a wealthy but unrefined pig butcher from Chong'an.
He claimed he had already received a substantial betrothal gift. Qi Delong refused. When her father fell to the ground, feigning injury, Fang Yuncheng arrived, dispersing the crowd and announcing that he would marry Qi Delong instead. Upon learning that Fang Yuncheng was a young master of the Jiang Family, Qi Delong's father's attitude changed. Fang Yuncheng, pretending to be the "well-learned and politically astute Junior Young Master Jiang," brought Qi Delong and her father into the mansion.
Inside, Qi Delong's father admired the expensive tea set, which Fang Yuncheng gifted him. When Jiang Tianling entered the room, Fang Yuncheng quickly dismissed him, pretending to reprimand him. Convinced that he was marrying his daughter to a wealthy young master, Qi Delong's father departed happily, with the tea set and a pair of flying horse figurines.
News spread that Ma Ru Long had confessed to illegally manufacturing Five Eras Powder and harming innocent people, leading to his conviction and exile, but he had escaped. Jiang Tianling, Shui Wuxia, and Qi Delong discussed the situation. Qi Delong said that Five Eras Powder wasn't rare in Chong'an and didn't require live subjects for testing, suggesting that Ma Ru Long's confession was a fabrication to prevent further investigation.
Jiang Tianling worried that Ma Ru Long would continue his illegal activities. Jiang Baiyu's father, concerned for their safety, warned Jiang Baiyu, Shui Wuxia, and Qi Delong to stop their investigation, citing the danger while Ma Ru Long was at large. Jiang Baiyu argued that Ma Ru Long's use of Corpse Decomposer and live drug testing was evidence they couldn't ignore, while Qi Delong questioned the point of the inspector exam if they ignored such injustice.
Jiang Baiyu's father insisted they stop. Ma Ru Long, after escaping, met with Mr. Xiao. Ma Ru Long said his escape was arranged and that the Jiang Family youngsters were no match for him. He instructed his men to continue searching for test subjects. Mr. Xiao suggested testing the drug on himself, but Ma Ru Long refused, saying Mr. Xiao was essential to drug creation. Mr. Xiao then proposed retrieving a 1,000-year-old ginseng from the Jiang Mansion's herbal medicine storage.
He explained that the ginseng was kept in a sandalwood box with a hidden mechanism that revealed a piece of paper left by Jiang Jue, crucial for his research. Old Madam Jiang, having overheard her son's discussion of Pavilion Master Qiu, declared that since Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia's relationship was public, they needed to inform Pavilion Master Qiu. She revealed that Pavilion Master Qiu had sent a letter inviting them to the pavilion.
Despite Jiang Baiyu's protests about studying and feigned illness, Old Madam Jiang insisted they go. She enticed them with the promise of a miraculous 1,000-year-old herb pond at Lang Ya Pavilion that could cure Jiang Baiyu's "strange illness." She arranged for them to bring valuable gifts for Pavilion Master Qiu, including a 1,000-year-old Ganoderma lucidum and ginseng herbal medicine.
On their way to Lang Ya Pavilion, Jiang Baiyu hinted at wanting to search for Ma Ru Long, but Shui Wuxia reminded him it was pointless. While they stopped their carriage to gather wild fruits, masked robbers attacked, killing their coachman and trying to steal their belongings, including the ginseng. Lang Ya Pavilion attendants, led by Seventh Senior Sister, arrived and helped. Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu fought alongside them, driving off the bandits and recovering their items.
Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu debated whether the attack was orchestrated by Ma Ru Long or a random encounter. At Lang Ya Pavilion, Jiang Baiyu reminded Shui Wuxia to keep up their act. Seventh Senior Sister confronted Jiang Baiyu, doubting his suitability for Shui Wuxia and stating that Lang Ya Pavilion had prepared trials to test him. Jiang Baiyu accepted the challenge, vowing that he and Shui Wuxia were in love and he would accept any punishment if he failed. Seventh Senior Sister nodded in acceptance.
Episode 19 Recap
Jiang Baiyu undergoes a series of tests at Lang Ya Pavilion, overseen by Seventh Senior Sister. The first test requires him to identify Shui Wuxia solely by touch while blindfolded, a test of familiarity between lovers that Jiang Baiyu confidently declares will be no problem. As he touches the hands of several women, Shui Wuxia attempts to subtly guide him, but he misinterprets her movements, believing she's trying to trick him.
He comments that one hand is "dry and not beautiful at all" and another is "plump and round," dismissing them as not Shui Wuxia's. He confidently declares a "slender and lean" hand to be hers. However, upon removing his blindfold, he realizes his mistake and apologizes, vowing to win the next round. The second test involves a three-on-one combat challenge where Jiang Baiyu fights against Shui Wuxia and two others.
He believes this test is to prove his masculinity, thinking he can only pass by defeating Shui Wuxia. Shui Wuxia, though perplexed by her inclusion, decides to go easy on him to let him win. After Jiang Baiyu defeats all three opponents, he proudly asks Seventh Senior Sister if he demonstrated a man's strength. She retorts that while he showed strength, he lacked a man's demeanor, having no emotional intelligence to strike his beloved.
Jiang Baiyu, expecting another round, is informed by Seventh Senior Sister that his test results show he lacks familiarity with his true love, lacks masculine demeanor, is skilled at sophistry, and lacks a sense of propriety. Therefore, there will be no further stages. She then dismisses him angrily. Later, as Jiang Baiyu wanders through the forest, he hears a woman's cries for help.
He discovers a Lang Ya maid who claims to have been bitten by a poisonous snake and is struggling to breathe. Jiang Baiyu, after a quick assessment, asserts it's likely a non-venomous bite needing only cleaning. He then asks if she knows Shui Wuxia and can lead him into Lang Ya Pavilion. The maid, insisting on the severity of her condition, pleads with him to extract the poison.
Jiang Baiyu, not following the usual approach, attempts to forcefully squeeze the "poisoned" blood from her wound. Startled, the maid quickly stops him, revealing her own snakebite antidote, which she promptly consumes. She then agrees to guide him but claims a leg injury prevents her from walking, requiring him to carry her. Jiang Baiyu readily agrees, hoisting her over his shoulder.
Unbeknownst to Jiang Baiyu, this entire encounter is the final stage of the test, observed by Shui Wuxia and Seventh Senior Sister. Shui Wuxia, witnessing his blunt approach, expresses surprise, noting his usual less crude demeanor, and concludes he definitely wouldn't pass this test. Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu are then brought before Pavilion Matron Qiu.
To their surprise, Pavilion Matron Qiu announces that Jiang Baiyu has passed, stating she could discern his true affection for Shui Wuxia throughout the trials. She explains that his misstep in the first stage indicated his respectful and proper conduct towards her. In the second stage, his eagerness to win was to demonstrate his own strength, rather than constantly relying on her protection.
For the third test, when the weak woman threw herself at him, he remained unmoved, exhibiting no improper thoughts or actions. Jiang Tianling, reflecting on the maxim "A gentleman shall take responsibility for his actions," is troubled by his morning with Zhe Zhi. He feels he has compromised her integrity and owes her an answer, but he also struggles with the implication of being bound to her for the rest of his life.
Later, seeing Fang Yuncheng and Qi Delong's charade, Jiang Tianling is moved when Fang Yuncheng states that if he marries Qi Delong, he must be responsible for Qi Delong's father. This spurs Jiang Tianling to finally approach Zhe Zhi, declaring his intent to take responsibility for that night. However, Zhe Zhi firmly rebuffs him and dismisses him.
Meanwhile, Qi Delong tells Fang Yuncheng that she intends to confess the truth to her father and urges Fang Yuncheng to no longer be involved in her family's scheme. Pavilion Matron Qiu later discovers a moldy paper tucked inside the ginseng chest. Recognizing its potential importance, she entrusts it to Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu for restoration. Jiang Baiyu speculates that the paper, found in the same chest the bandits tried to steal, suggests a connection to Ma Rulong. Using techniques that remove mold and fix writing, they carefully restore the paper, which needs to dry overnight. During this time, they share childhood memories.
Episode 20 Recap
A government search was conducted at Lang Ya Pavilion, supposedly for a wanted criminal. However, the Seventh Senior Sister who patrolled the premises day and night assured that no criminal could have broken in, suggesting it was likely a false alarm. It was later revealed that Ma Ru Long's men, disguised as officials, carried out the search, though they found nothing.
Jiang Baiyu deduced that Pavilion Matron had anticipated their nefarious intentions and had already hidden the crucial papers for him and Shui Wuxia. Pavilion Matron invited Jiang Baiyu to a game of Go, remarking that the game, much like his investigation, appeared simple but was actually treacherous. She revealed that she had guessed his true intentions after seeing the prescription, which she recognized as his father's, and acknowledged his seven years of quiet endurance.
Jiang Baiyu promised to protect Shui Wuxia no matter what future challenges arose, confident he would win this dangerous "game." Pavilion Matron then explained his father's unique method of encoding prescriptions, using symbols and numbers corresponding to the Jiang family's herbal-medicine cabinet, which saved time on memorizing herb names. She handed the original prescription to Jiang Baiyu.
Jiang Tianling, influenced by Fang Yuncheng's philosophy that a woman always needs something, even if she claims otherwise, believed Zhe Zhi deeply desired an explanation from him. He found Zhe Zhi practicing a dance and mistakenly thought she was contemplating suicide, dramatically insisting on taking responsibility for her. Zhe Zhi, however, clearly rejected his advances, explaining that she genuinely did not need his forced sense of responsibility.
Upon returning to the Jiang Mansion, Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu were dismayed to discover the prescription they had carefully stored was missing. Relying on Shui Wuxia's exceptional memory, she managed to reconstruct the complex symbols of the prescription. However, Jiang Baiyu was not skilled enough in herbal medicine to decipher it, leading them to seek Jiang Tianling's assistance.
This coincided with the awkward situation of Jiang Tianling having to pose as a servant to appease Qi Delong's father, who was present at the Jiang Mansion. Jiang Tianling found the ordeal unbearable, watching his unbearable eating habits and having to clean his mouth afterwards. Shui Wuxia visited Shen Qingli, bringing him potent spirit herbs from Lang Ya Pavilion, having added a large dose to the decoction.
Unbeknownst to her, Shen Qingli's wounds had already healed, and he feared that taking such a strong dose would cause him to "explode and die." He skillfully evaded Shui Wuxia's attempts to examine his wound, redirecting the conversation to her experiences at Lang Ya Pavilion, saying they always talked about wounds. Shui Wuxia gave a simple account of her time there, but then reiterated her desire to check his wound. Shen Qingli, flustered, quickly excused himself and fled.
Shui Wuxia was left perplexed by his unusual behavior, finding it strange that he seemed so different after only a few days apart. Later, while preparing for a criminal law class with Qi Delong, Shui Wuxia proposed simulating a crime scene to make the lesson more vivid, rather than just reading from books. They decided to play the "murder victims" for Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling to investigate.
While preparing, Qi Delong noticed Shui Wuxia's preoccupation, asking if she was thinking about Shen Qingli and if she had feelings for him, even suggesting Shen Qingli might also have feelings for her. This made Shui Wuxia realize that Shen Qingli's recent peculiar actions might indeed be due to jealousy. Concluding that she had been getting too close to Jiang Baiyu, she resolved to maintain a greater distance from him in the future.
During the simulated crime scene, Shui Wuxia, still thinking about Shen Qingli's jealousy, was noticeably stiff and uncomfortable when Jiang Baiyu began his investigation, especially when he touched her to locate the "wound." Despite her resistance, Jiang Baiyu adeptly found the hidden "wound," deducing it was inflicted by an assassin's unconventional weapon. Shui Wuxia quickly left after his successful deduction. Coincidentally, Jiang Tianling encountered Zhe Zhi hurrying along a road.
She explained she was on her way to perform for an elderly woman who liked to watch her dance, but had forgotten her costume at Lantern Boudoir, which was too far to retrieve in time. Jiang Tianling, after learning it would take about a quarter of an hour to return to Lantern Boudoir and it would be too late, offered a solution and took Zhe Zhi to buy her a beautiful silk robe and matching jewelry.
Although it began to rain, hindering their journey, Zhe Zhi's spontaneous spirit was undaunted. She declared that if one wanted to dance, any place would do, and proceeded to perform gracefully on a bridge, despite the downpour.
Episode 21 Recap
Jiang Tianling found himself continually preoccupied with Zhe Zhi, often staring at her shoes, unable to focus on his studies. Later, Shui Wuxia inquired about Jiang Tianling's analysis of the prescription. He confirmed it was meant for irregular menstruation, which perplexed them as Jiang Baiyu's father and Ma Rulong would not have needed such a remedy, and Thousand Horses Hall had previously tested their drugs on men.
Shui Wuxia then speculated that the arrangement of the medicine cabinets might have changed from seven years ago. Jiang Baiyu remembered renovating the cabinet two months prior due to worm damage, potentially altering the herb placement. Fortunately, Jiang Tianling vividly recalled the original layout of the herbs. He discovered the prescription actually targeted a hidden heat/skin condition and issues arising from conflicting medicines. However, he concluded it was a "poison to quench thirst," designed to hasten death.
It appeared Jiang Baiyu's father's prescription remained unfinished. Shui Wuxia waited on the roof, convinced she understood Ma Rulong's intentions. She believed her brother was killed for refusing to test drugs for him and vowed to uncover the truth. As she wondered why Shen Qingli hadn't arrived, a note was thrown to her, instructing her to meet in a backstreet alley. Meanwhile, Fang Yuncheng was preparing medicine for Qi Delong's father.
When Qi Delong asked, Fang Yuncheng explained it was a tonic to supplement him. Qi Delong angrily remarked that her father's constant indulgence at Lantern Boudoir was the obvious cause of his poor health, declaring he needed more than a Qi supplement; he needed a "heart supplement," and Fang Yuncheng himself needed a "brain supplement" for being so nosy.
She sternly told him that his efforts to curry favor with her father would not make her like him, but rather increase her dislike. Fang Yuncheng expressed surprise at her strong hatred for her father, to which Qi Delong retorted that she disliked him, Fang Yuncheng, just as much for meddling. Following the note's instructions, Shui Wuxia walked through the streets, captivated by fireworks and a lively band playing on a bridge.
Her delight grew when a flower vendor presented her with flowers. However, the vendor then asked Shui Wuxia for payment, revealing that "Young Master Jiang" (Jiang Baiyu) had forgotten to pay. Shen Qingli, who had been observing from afar, quickly disappeared to avoid being discovered. Later, Shen Qingli privately reflected that Shui Wuxia's "extra dosage of spiritual herbs" for his supposed wound had almost caused him to "explode and die" since his injury had already healed.
Shui Wuxia, still believing Shen Qingli to be jealous, later met him and hastily explained that her relationship with Jiang Baiyu was merely a pretense and that she couldn't possibly like Jiang Baiyu, asking him not to misunderstand. In criminal investigation class, Hou Chang'an presented an unsolved case: a woman with a knife wound, found floating in the river, accompanied by a man. Qi Delong immediately suspected murder, puzzled why the man would drown if he were the killer.
The case file revealed the woman was a noble lady and the man a servant, yet both wore mandarin duck perfume sachets, hinting at a secret relationship. The lady's father claimed he witnessed the man injuring and abducting his daughter. Shui Wuxia interjected that love shouldn't be so impulsive and one must accept when others don't return their feelings. The lady's maid, however, stated that the knife wound was inflicted after death.
Qi Delong then deduced that the father was likely lying, inflicting the wound on his deceased daughter to cover up the disgrace of her elopement. Meanwhile, Jiang Baiyu opened the door from Zhe Zhi's room and found Jiang Tianling outside, realizing his younger brother seemed to have feelings for Zhe Zhi.
Jiang Baiyu cautioned his brother that he and Zhe Zhi were not a good match, citing their contrasting personalities: Zhe Zhi was unrestrained and inconsistent, while Jiang Tianling was mature and conventional. Zhe Zhi was skilled in singing and dancing, whereas Jiang Tianling was tone-deaf. He firmly believed they were unsuitable. That night, Shui Wuxia, unable to sleep, went to the roof. Shen Qingli found her there and invited her to be a hero with him.
She readily agreed, and together they embarked on a series of good deeds: providing silver to a man with an eye injury so he could seek treatment, rescuing a kidnapped girl, and delivering food to poor families.
Episode 22 Recap
Jiang Tianling sought advice from Jiang Baiyu on how to act after realizing his feelings for Shui Wuxia. Jiang Baiyu suggested that understanding one's feelings requires action, like giving a gift. He then questioned Jiang Tianling's continued pursuit of Zhe Zhi, pointing out their fundamental differences. He felt they were from two separate worlds that shouldn't be forced together, questioning whether Jiang Tianling truly knew his own or Zhe Zhi's feelings.
Jiang Tianling argued that even if they were different, they could create a shared world. Jiang Baiyu dismissed this and suggested Jiang Tianling treat it as a dream. The next morning, Jiang Tianling announced his decision to confess his love to Zhe Zhi, shocking Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Tianling admitted they were vastly different and seemed incompatible, but he believed they were like a bow and arrow—distinct but destined to be a perfect match.
Seeing issues between Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, Jiang Tianling arranged for them to meet, believing they needed better communication. During the meeting, Shui Wuxia told Jiang Baiyu to maintain a three-foot distance. She explained she was aware of his feelings and had tried to clearly define their boundaries, surprised he hadn't noticed. She stated a relationship was impossible because she already loved someone else, and he shouldn't have expectations. She did acknowledge he was a nice person.
As she left, she tripped and sprained her ankle. Jiang Baiyu carried her back, applying medicine. She reminisced about her swordsman hero, and they passed a vendor selling telescopes. Later, a maid, Baxi, observed Jiang Baiyu meticulously crafting a special telescope for Shui Wuxia, but Shui Wuxia insisted they were just friends. After Zhe Zhi won the Chong'an dance competition, Jiang Tianling congratulated her, bringing gifts, including a lucky bamboo.
Zhe Zhi had her assistant take Jiang Tianling to a private room, as she was busy. Oblivious to her dismissal, Jiang Tianling promised to return the next day. Old Madam Jiang summoned Qi Delong, stating that since her engagement to Jiang Tianling was settled, they should inform Pavilion Matron Qiu. She presented Qi Delong with betrothal gifts, ensuring they were comparable to those prepared for Shui Wuxia. Old Madam Jiang planned to send them to Lang Ya Pavilion soon.
Qi Delong objected, fearing the Pavilion Matron's displeasure and not wanting to trouble Jiang Tianling. Old Madam Jiang agreed to delay the gifts but insisted on sending a notification letter, revealing she'd already dispatched a messenger to Lang Ya Pavilion's local branch. Desperate, Qi Delong asked Shui Wuxia to write a letter requesting her Senior Sister to delay delivering the notification for two days, hoping her father would cancel the engagement. Shui Wuxia agreed.
Jiang Baiyu visited Zhe Zhi and saw the lucky bamboo and gifts, recognizing Jiang Tianling's taste. He alluded to "her and his brother's situation," and she stated nothing happened when Jiang Tianling supposedly slept in her bed after drinking too much. Jiang Baiyu concluded his brother must be completely in love. Jiang Tianling arrived later, tidying Zhe Zhi's room before confessing.
He claimed he'd thought of her an average of eighty-two times a day since seeing her dance, snapping fifty branches, and mistaking others for her over a hundred times. He described a constant "tickling" sensation and, after consulting numerous doctors, diagnosed himself with lovesickness. He presented her with a miniature model of Ridge Crest Villa, symbolizing his heart, hoping she would reside there.
Zhe Zhi acknowledged his efforts but gently rejected him, stating they were from "two different worlds" and she only saw him as a "little brother." She reiterated her preference for "the entire forest" over "one tree" and advised him to focus on his studies. Holding the miniature villa, Jiang Tianling stood outside her door, unwilling to accept her refusal.
Episode 23 Recap
Fang Yuncheng observed Jiang Tianling being dismissed by Zhe Zhi and quickly informed Jiang Baiyu and others. Jiang Baiyu was not surprised, remarking that he had long known of the situation between Zhe Zhi and his younger brother. He recognized that Jiang Tianling was now heartbroken. Concerned because Jiang Tianling had never experienced such a significant setback, the group decided to search for him.
After failing to find him at Jiang Mansion, they eventually located him standing on a bridge in West City. Misinterpreting his contemplative stance, they rushed to embrace him, believing he was contemplating suicide after his rejection. Jiang Tianling clarified their misunderstanding, explaining that this particular bridge was where he first saw Zhe Zhi dance and where he first truly understood his own heart's desires. His friends offered words of comfort.
Jiang Tianling, however, interpreted their words as encouragement not to be disheartened and resolved to continue his pursuit, regardless of the challenges. Old Madam Jiang announced that the abbot of Xiangguo Temple had predicted an earthquake in Chong'an on the eighth day of August and urged everyone to take precautions. Jiang Baiyu told Shui Wuxia that if she was afraid, she could stay with him and he would protect her.
Fang Yuncheng also offered to stay with Qi Delong for company if she was scared, but she refused. Fang Yuncheng went to Lantern Boudoir to find Qi Delong’s father, Uncle Qi, helped him find the best inn to stay, and asked him to meet Qi Delong. Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling boldly entered Zhe Zhi's room at Lantern Boudoir, where she was hosting other patrons. Upon seeing him, Zhe Zhi deliberately acted more intimately with her guests to deter Jiang Tianling.
Undeterred, Jiang Tianling dramatically warned the patrons about the severity of the upcoming earthquake. His warnings successfully prompted the patrons to quickly depart. After they left, Zhe Zhi questioned his motives, but Jiang Tianling argued that they couldn't possibly know if they were an unsuitable match without truly trying. Challenged by Zhe Zhi to experience a day in her life, Jiang Tianling eagerly accepted.
The following morning, Zhe Zhi was surprised to find Jiang Tianling already outside her door, reading and sipping tea. He informed her he had been there for three "shichen" (six hours), observing her life, during which he had read three books and consumed a pot of tea. He watched her dance and pointed out a flaw in her force exertion. He explained the reason for this and offered to dance with her to demonstrate.
Later, Jiang Tianling tidied her room and thoughtfully prepared a jar of Fu Lin ointment for her, which was effective for ankle sprains. Shui Wuxia intercepted Fang Yuncheng as he was attempting to take Qi Delong to dinner at the Swan Goose.
Shui Wuxia relayed the urgent news that Seventh Senior Sister could go to Langya Pavilion later, and Qi Delong's father and Old Master Jiang were in the Council Hall, discussing marriage, with Jiang Baiyu trying to manage the situation. She instructed Qi Delong to accompany her to the Council Hall while Fang Yuncheng found a place to hide. In the Council Hall, Old Madam Jiang presented portraits of Jiang Tianling and Qi Delong to Qi Delong’s father.
He was confused by Jiang Tianling’s portrait, remarking that it clearly wasn't the young master he knew. Jiang Baiyu quickly intervened, diverting Qi Delong's father with an offer of gold and jewelry, then escorting him away. Later, Qi Delong confronted Fang Yuncheng, telling him to stop meddling in her father's affairs. Fang Yuncheng kept speaking up for her father, but Qi Delong vehemently retorted that she would rather have no father.
As Jiang Baiyu sketched and Shui Wuxia read, a powerful earthquake struck Chong'an. Jars, books, and other items tumbled, and a folding screen threatened to fall on Shui Wuxia. Jiang Baiyu swiftly shielded her, taking the brunt of the impact himself. Amidst the chaos of the earthquake, people rushed out of Jiang Mansion and Lantern Boudoir. However, Jiang Tianling pushed against the outgoing crowds at Lantern Boudoir, desperately searching for Zhe Zhi. He found her huddled in a corner, terrified.
When the shaking subsided, Jiang Tianling approached her, and Zhe Zhi immediately embraced him. After the earthquake, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia accidentally kissed, and Jiang Baiyu sustained a neck injury.
Episode 24 Recap
After Shui Wuxia left, Jiang Baiyu attempted to remove his neck brace, hoping to pretend to be Shen Qingli and impress Shui Wuxia. However, his neck remained immobile, prompting him to call for help. Shui Wuxia, who had not gone far, quickly returned. She admonished him for taking off the brace, which he feigned ignorance about, claiming it fell off by itself.
She then helped him readjust the brace, warning him that reckless removal could leave him with a "crooked neck," like a "crooked tree," and no girl would ever like him. Assuring her he would be fine, she decided to stay and watch over him to prevent further mischief. The following day, Jiang Baiyu's friends, Jiang Tianling and Fang Yuncheng, gathered, puzzled by the severity of his neck injury from what was only a minor earthquake.
They pointed out that the falling screen was directed at Shui Wuxia, so Jiang Baiyu should have injured his back, not his neck. Fang Yuncheng speculated that Jiang Baiyu, always valuing his life, would have hidden in a safe corner during the quake. Jiang Tianling then deduced the true scenario: Jiang Baiyu must have been directly under the screen, with Shui Wuxia beneath him, effectively making him a "meat patty" between them.
They teased that at that moment, Jiang Baiyu's lips must have pressed against Shui Wuxia's cheek. Jiang Baiyu, in turn, asked where they were when he got hurt, prompting Jiang Tianling to quickly shift the topic to their new homework—a simulated case inference. Each student drew an identity card; Jiang Baiyu drew "Landowner Zhou," while Fang Yuncheng drew "Madam Zhou," leading to playful accusations of a "public display of affection."
Jiang Baiyu then noticed a lip print on Jiang Tianling's face. Jiang Tianling recounted that on the night of the earthquake, he had saved Zhe Zhi in Lantern Boudoir, and she had thanked him with a kiss. After sharing the story, he awkwardly asked his friends if he should wipe off the lip print. Later, Jiang Tianling visited Zhe Zhi and asked if she was willing to give up the "entire forest" for him and commit solely to him.
Zhe Zhi smiled, then playfully removed a hairpin from her head and placed it on his. Overjoyed, he interpreted this as her acceptance. He then gathered Jiang Baiyu and their friends at Lantern Boudoir to announce their official relationship. Jiang Tianling thanked everyone for their encouragement when he was initially hesitant about Zhe Zhi.
Zhe Zhi added that the earthquake had made her realize her past desire for the "forest" was an illusion, and only this "little sapling" (Jiang Tianling) was genuine. She confessed her fear during the quake, but seeing his worry for her made her want him to protect her forever.
As the couple openly displayed their affection, Jiang Tianling jokingly credited Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia's "love" for his enlightenment, observing the "true love" in their eyes when they quietly drew "husband and wife" cards in class. This remark left Shui Wuxia visibly uncomfortable. Meanwhile, the news of Jiang Baiyu saving Shui Wuxia during the earthquake spread, earning him numerous fan girls who inundated him with letters.
He spent an entire night reading and replying to them, completely ignoring Shui Wuxia when she brought him food and snacks or invited him to a shadow puppet show. Exhausted, Shui Wuxia fell asleep and dreamt of Jiang Baiyu being surrounded by a throng of fan girls. She awoke, saw him still writing replies, and angrily told him to read more books.
Shui Wuxia then asked him about his future, specifically if he would get married and who he envisioned as his partner. He affirmed he would marry the person he loved and reassured her that as "Brother Shui," she would always be his "Brother Shui" and would certainly be at his wedding. When she pressed him about potential candidates like the "Xishi of the east city" or "girls from the north city," he clarified they were just his fan girls.
He then showed her the letter. Feeling increasingly conflicted, Shui Wuxia found that she seemed to be genuinely falling for Jiang Baiyu. Ba Xi, sensing her confusion, offered to administer a popular "True Love Test." The first question was whether Jiang Baiyu was the first person she thought of when she found something delicious; Shui Wuxia confirmed, recalling buying him mooncakes.
The second asked if he was the first person she wanted to share interesting things with; Shui Wuxia again confirmed, remembering inviting him to the puppet show. The third question was whether she got jealous seeing him with other girls. Shui Wuxia confirmed all three, leading her to realize the truth of her feelings. Disturbed by these realizations, Shui Wuxia returned home, desperately searching for "The Analects of Confucius" to calm herself.
Instead, she found a painting of herself and Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Baiyu entered, explaining the painting was a gift from the young mistress of the Kong Family. He tried to reassure Shui Wuxia that those seeking fleeting pleasure were inconsistent, and their "affair" would soon be forgotten. Sensing her discomfort, he offered to put the painting away, but Shui Wuxia stopped him, insisting it was a kind gesture and should remain.
Episode 25 Recap
Jiang Tianling took Zhe Zhi on a date to a tea house where they listened to a health preservation lecture. However, when Zhe Zhi returned to Lantern Boudoir, she found it empty of customers. Upon asking her girls, she discovered that Jiang Tianling had distributed health preservation guides not only to the Lantern Boudoir girls but also to all their regular clients, leading everyone to go home early.
Zhe Zhi angrily confronted Jiang Tianling, accusing him of ruining her business and chasing away her customers. Jiang Tianling argued that he only wished for everyone to live a healthy life, waking at sunrise and resting at sunset, so that Zhe Zhi could get more rest. Zhe Zhi countered that Lantern Boudoir thrives in the evening, with patrons coming to drink and enjoy themselves, not to go to bed early.
She felt their values were completely incompatible, stating she could not understand his "dull interests" and he could not integrate into her life. She proposed they take a break to cool down. Fang Yuncheng, hearing about Jiang Tianling's predicament, offered advice on how to be less rigid and connect with others. He suggested three steps: first, to shake his legs to loosen up; second, to drink while shaking; and third, to try cursing.
After practicing these steps, Jiang Tianling believed he finally understood the unrestrained joy customers found in drinking at Lantern Boudoir and even developed a new idea. However, his old habits quickly returned, as he promptly declared it was "Xushi" (7-9 p. m. ) and time for both him and Fang Yuncheng to go to bed. Meanwhile, Fang Yuncheng confessed his frustrations to Jiang Baiyu, feeling that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't win Qi Delong's heart.
Jiang Baiyu comforted him, explaining that love often involves a "first come, first served" principle, and Jiang Tianling had already secured a place in Qi Delong's heart, leaving no easy room for Fang Yuncheng. This perspective brought Fang Yuncheng a sense of relief, and he decided that once Old Man Qi canceled the engagement, he would distance himself from Qi Delong's life for both their sakes.
Shui Wuxia found herself increasingly troubled by her growing feelings for Jiang Baiyu, feeling confused as her situation seemed to defy the typical "first come, first served" rule of romance, with her being a "latecomer takes precedence." When Ba Xi pressed her to explain what she liked about Jiang Baiyu, Shui Wuxia reflected on a myriad of small, everyday gestures.
She recalled him showing her around Chong'an, introducing her to durian candy, and preparing Adlay millet tea for her every morning. Despite his playful nature, he always protected her, even crafting a transforming telescope because he knew she feared the moon, and shielding her during the last earthquake. She confessed that returning to his room always felt like coming home.
Comparing this to her relationship with Shen Qingli, Shui Wuxia admitted that while she was happy with him, she always felt a certain distance and uncertainty about him, sometimes even thinking he resembled Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Baiyu, disguised as Shen Qingli, once again met Shui Wuxia at their usual spot. He asked her if she would be willing to spend her life with him. Shui Wuxia, having come to terms with her feelings for Jiang Baiyu, regretfully declined.
She quickly clarified that it was her issue, not his, explaining that her mind and heart had been preoccupied with "another person" lately, and she struggled to explain why. When Shen Qingli pressed further, asking if that person was Jiang Baiyu, Shui Wuxia became flustered and hurried away. Back at Lantern Boudoir, Jiang Tianling implemented his new event plan, offering unlimited food and drink for three taels per person.
The event was a resounding success, drawing a large crowd and bringing booming business to Lantern Boudoir. Later, as Zhe Zhi watched Jiang Tianling writing in her room, the candle suddenly extinguished. She stopped him from relighting it, suggesting they play a game in the dark. Jiang Tianling proposed idioms solitaire, but Zhe Zhi simply blew out a lantern and left him to play by himself.
Episode 26 Recap
Early in the morning, Jiang Tianling went to wake Zhe Zhi, who was still upset about the previous night's events. To cheer her up, Jiang Tianling presented her with a special gift. He led her, with her eyes closed, to a painting depicting the two of them. Zhe Zhi was delighted by the artwork, and they shared a close embrace. Just at that moment, Jiang Father unexpectedly opened the door, witnessing their intimate moment.
At the Jiang Mansion, Jiang Tianling knelt before his father. Qi Delong rushed in, clarifying that her relationship with Jiang Tianling had merely been an act to cancel an engagement, and returned the bracelet given to her by Jiang Father. Fang Yuncheng then knelt beside Qi Delong, confessing that he was the one who had impersonated Junior Young Master Jiang in front of Mr. Qi, leading to a series of misunderstandings.
Jiang Father then took Jiang Tianling aside for a private conversation. He acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding the broken engagement were understandable and not entirely Jiang Tianling's fault. However, he expressed confusion as to why Jiang Tianling would frequent a place like Lantern Boudoir, which he considered a "place of carnal pleasure." Jiang Tianling explained that Lantern Boudoir, despite its reputation, was a pure establishment where the women offered only artistic performances, not sexual services.
Jiang Father remained unconvinced, questioning why his son would be alone in a private room with a dancer, an act he associated more with Jiang Baiyu. Jiang Tianling clarified that while Zhe Zhi was indeed a dancer, she was honorable, and their relationship was serious. Jiang Father, however, found it difficult to accept his son's affection for a dancer, having heard that Zhe Zhi was frivolous, wild, experienced with many men, and a full ten years older than Jiang Tianling.
Jiang Tianling defended Zhe Zhi, asserting that she was dedicated, had established Lantern Boudoir independently, and was in no way inferior to the maids of Lang Ya Pavilion. He declared that he had committed to Zhe Zhi for this life. Furious, Jiang Father firmly stated that he would never allow Zhe Zhi to step foot into the Jiang Mansion. When Jiang Tianling vowed to marry no one but Zhe Zhi, his father, enraged, ordered him to be confined.
Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia then spoke with Old Madam Jiang, explaining Jiang Tianling's situation. Old Madam Jiang wanted to confront Zhe Zhi, but Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia persuaded her to approach the matter cautiously and plan for the long term. Jiang Baiyu later visited Zhe Zhi, who was practicing her dance, visibly upset. He acknowledged her distress and gently explained that Jiang Father's reaction was natural given Zhe Zhi was nine years older than Jiang Tianling.
Jiang Baiyu then playfully suggested Zhe Zhi break up with Jiang Tianling to avoid further conflict with his father. Zhe Zhi, however, asked if Jiang Tianling had been punished. Jiang Baiyu exaggeratedly confirmed he was confined and kneeling for self-reflection. Later, Jiang Baiyu, Fang Yuncheng, and Qi Delong went to visit Jiang Tianling, who was still confined. Jiang Baiyu suggested playing Mahjong to cheer him up.
Jiang Tianling initially refused, finding it inappropriate, but Jiang Baiyu, Fang Yuncheng, and Qi Delong started playing nearby. Jiang Tianling eventually joined them, saying they were one short and he would help out. Jiang Tianling consistently won, leading to Jiang Baiyu and the others getting ink marks painted on their faces. Meanwhile, Jiang Baiyu received a letter containing news about Ma Ru Long, indicating his location.
He and Shui Wuxia proceeded to the address mentioned in the letter, agreeing to split up and search. However, Jiang Baiyu soon worried about Shui Wuxia and turned back to check on her. Along the way, Shui Wuxia observed two children squabbling over a book. Recognizing the label on the book, she realized it was her brother's. This discovery led her to believe that her brother was still alive and was likely being held by Ma Ru Long.
Episode 27 Recap
Shen Qingli intended to reveal his true identity as Jiang Baiyu to Shui Wuxia. However, just as he was about to remove his mask, Shui Wuxia brought up the Phoenix Pin. He immediately stood up, his demeanor serious, and pressed her for details about it. Shui Wuxia explained that the Phoenix Pin was a personal item belonging to her brother, who was believed to have been murdered seven years ago.
She had recently found clues suggesting he might still be alive. Jiang Baiyu, hearing this, gripped his fists, remembering that his own parents' murderers had also worn a Phoenix Pin. This created a painful internal conflict for him, as he realized the Phoenix Pin, a personal item of Shui Wuxia's brother, was also worn by his parents' murderers, leading him to believe Shui Wuxia's brother was his father's killer.
Meanwhile, Master Ma had prepared a new decoction and was forcing Xiao Kai Zhen to test it. Xiao Kai Zhen questioned the sudden change of location, to which Master Ma explained it was for safety, as the decoction emitted a potent smell that could cause stimulation, and he wanted no disturbances during the drug test.
Xiao Kai Zhen cut his hand and applied the tainted blood to his wound, asserting that he would successfully create the drug to treat ALS, even if it meant saving his own life. Master Ma warned him that tainted blood would accelerate the disease's onset, leaving him with limited time. Before being moved by Master Ma’s men to a secluded Taoist temple in the western suburbs, Xiao Kai Zhen excused himself to use an outhouse.
While in a dark alley, he seized the opportunity to leave a book behind as a signal, hoping it would be a final chance for the Jiang family. At Lantern Boudoir, Shen Qingli removed his mask and drank heavily. For seven years, he had harbored the desire to personally kill his father's murderer and reclaim his true identity as Jiang Baiyu. Now, believing that Shui Wuxia's brother was his father's killer, he was in deep anguish.
Zhe Zhi stood by him, assuring him that she would support him no matter what choice he made. Jiang Baiyu, however, lamented that any choice he made would inevitably be wrong. He continued to drink, tormented by memories of his time with Shui Wuxia. The next morning, Shui Wuxia went to look for Jiang Baiyu, and a servant initially told her he might be out for his morning training, making her happy.
Shortly after, however, she saw servants helping a disheveled and heavily intoxicated Jiang Baiyu into the mansion. She asked where he had been all night, noting his hungover state. When she attempted to wipe his face, he gently pushed her hand away. After drinking the sober-up soup she offered, he placed the empty bowl directly on a nearby table instead of handing it back to her.
Sensing his strange behavior, Shui Wuxia asked him what was wrong, noticing he seemed like a completely different person. Jiang Baiyu explained that the upcoming exam was making him anxious, especially with his younger brother being so outstanding, which is why he had gone to Lantern Boudoir for a few drinks. Shui Wuxia advised him to follow her study plan, confident he would succeed. Despite her encouragement, his distant demeanor persisted.
Meanwhile, Qi Delong's father had started distributing flyers alleging "Jiang Mansion marital fraud" and spreading malicious rumors about the Jiang family shamelessly canceling a well-matched marriage and abandoning a Lang Ya Maid for a "Lang Ya Maid." Jiang Father and Zhe Zhi encountered each other in a shop and saw the scandalous papers. Jiang Father confronted Zhe Zhi, suggesting that the recent troubles were her doing.
Zhe Zhi retorted that it wasn't her fault, blaming the Jiang family for choosing the wrong in-laws, provoking a scoundrel, and exposing her reputation to ruin. Jiang Father claimed the rumors would eventually fade, but the issue between her and Jiang Tianling remained, especially given her being a full ten years older than him. He questioned if such a relationship could possibly have a good outcome.
Zhe Zhi, defiant, argued that neither she nor Jiang Tianling were ordinary people, and therefore, Jiang Father should not interrogate them using conventional rules. Jiang Father, unable to win the argument, declared he no longer wanted to speak to her, and left with his men. Shui Wuxia, noticing Jiang Baiyu's continued low spirits, tried to cheer him up by taking him to a peach blossom garden, a place he had appreciated when he was blind.
She hoped the fresh air and beautiful scenery would lift his mood. She repeatedly asked what was troubling him, suggesting exam stress or her own demanding study methods, but he insisted nothing was wrong, only that he was tired. She reminded him of the many people who cared for him—his mother, younger brother, and herself—and even suggested his father was watching over him. She encouraged him to share his burdens, but he remained withdrawn.
Despite her efforts, Jiang Baiyu remained unresponsive and melancholy. After much deliberation, Jiang Baiyu decided to act quickly to avenge his father. He sought out Zhe Zhi, informing her that he had figured things out. He shared the clues he had obtained (including Shui Wuxia's discovery of her brother's book and Xiao Kai Zhen's hidden message about a Taoist temple), concluding that Ma Ru Long's drug testing location was likely related to one.
He urged Zhe Zhi to act promptly to find Ma Ru Long's hideout. Looking at his father's blooming peach trees and recalling Shui Wuxia's words that his father was watching over him, Jiang Baiyu resolved that he could not let his father's death remain unavenged. Meanwhile, Ba Xi reported to Shui Wuxia that her men had thoroughly searched Taoist temples, Buddhist temples, and nunneries on all four mountains, but found no trace.
Shui Wuxia instructed them to extend their search to abandoned Taoist temples. Ba Xi, worried about Xiao Kai Zhen's grim prospects in such a secret location, suggested reporting to the officials. Shui Wuxia firmly refused, citing the hasty and inconclusive handling of Ma Ru Long's previous case and his suspected official connections. She expressed her fear that her brother, being in Ma Ru Long's hands, made any risk too great.
She outlined a plan for Ba Xi to draw a roadmap if the location was found, as Shui Wuxia intended to go alone. She explained that her men lacked the necessary martial arts skills, and their presence would be a distraction, making it less safe. She believed her own skills offered the best hope for rescuing her brother. She instructed Ba Xi to prepare a safe room with clothes and medicine along their escape route.
Shortly after Ba Xi departed, Jiang Baiyu arrived, asking Shui Wuxia where she had been. She told him she had gone for a walk to calm herself. Jiang Baiyu questioned her choice of Lantern Boudoir, knowing his father's disapproval of the place, then quickly clarified that "he" had gone there to mediate between Jiang Tianling and Zhe Zhi, and to reassure his younger brother that he wasn't fighting alone.
He then gently told Shui Wuxia that she wasn't alone either, expressing gratitude for her inspiring words at the peach blossom garden and promising to live up to her and his father's expectations. Jiang Baiyu then shifted the conversation, inquiring about Shui Wuxia's family, specifically her brother, asking what kind of person he was and why he hadn't visited. Shui Wuxia described her brother as a kind, medically skilled man who was very good to her.
She admitted they hadn't seen each other in a long time but believed they would soon reunite. Jiang Baiyu pressed further, asking if she would still recognize him after so many years. Shui Wuxia confidently stated she would, even if his appearance changed, pointing to a scar on his right arm from a childhood incident. Jiang Baiyu then cautiously suggested that while his appearance might be unchanged, his actions or character might have transformed him into someone she wouldn't recognize.
Shui Wuxia vehemently denied this, asserting that her brother, and anyone she believed in, would never change, recalling their shared childhood. Jiang Baiyu quietly remarked that she might not truly know "them" well, but when Shui Wuxia asked for clarification, he abruptly dismissed it, blaming his heavy drinking at Lantern Boudoir and retreating to bed.
Episode 28 Recap
Jiang Master ordered his servants to collect all the flyers circulating about the Jiang family and to keep a close eye on his younger son, Jiang Tianling. To keep Qi Delong occupied, he also sent her books to copy. Meanwhile, Qi Delong, already aware of her father's actions, requested Fang Yuncheng's help in gathering the flyers.
She emphasized that it was crucial to keep the matter from the Jiang family, especially Jiang Tianling, as it involved Lantern Boudoir and Lady Zhe Zhi, and she feared he might not be able to handle the distress. She vowed to apologize to Zhe Zhi once the ordeal was over. Unbeknownst to Qi Delong, a servant had already shown a flyer to Jiang Tianling, enraging him.
Jiang Tianling immediately tried to rush out to see Zhe Zhi, but Jiang Master intercepted him. Jiang Tianling vehemently insisted on going to Zhe Zhi, explaining that she had been implicated because of him. Jiang Master tried to dissuade him, suggesting he would find a well-educated, refined lady from a good family for him instead.
However, Jiang Tianling declared that societal matches and classical education were irrelevant; he loved Zhe Zhi and intended to see her every day, defying anyone who tried to stop him. When Jiang Master ordered his servants to restrain him, Jiang Tianling struggled, accusing his father of being irresponsible and failing his own mother, stating his mother's marriage to him was eight lifetimes of bad luck. Enraged, Jiang Master slapped him.
Jiang Tianling, undeterred, repeated his sentiment, then collapsed unconscious just outside the mansion gates. Old Madam Jiang rushed to her grandson, deeply distressed, and chastised Jiang Master for being so confrontational with Jiang Tianling, especially when he was already unwell from a cold. Jiang Master defended his actions, stating his son was stubborn and chose to defy him for a mere dancer.
Old Madam Jiang suggested that perhaps if Jiang Tianling had been allowed to see Zhe Zhi, she might have found someone else by now. Jiang Tianling eventually regained consciousness, still calling out Zhe Zhi's name. He assured Old Madam Jiang he wouldn't do anything foolish again but remained adamant that he would never give up on Zhe Zhi, despite her pleas for him to rest and not cause further trouble for the Jiang Mansion.
Later, Qi Delong's father, Qi Dong Qiang, was once again causing a public disturbance in the bustling streets of Chong'an. He loudly accused the Jiang family of "tainting" his innocent daughter and then "turning their backs" on them, demanding justice from the townsfolk. Qi Delong quickly intervened, snatching his gong and throwing it away. She publicly clarified that she had never been wronged or tainted by the Jiang family.
Qi Dong Qiang, however, accused her of lying and urged her to tell the "truth." In response, Qi Delong produced a stack of papers, revealing them to be her father's gambling debts accumulated over the years, exposing him as a gambler who saw her only as a source of quick money and sought to defraud the Jiang family.
Qi Dong Qiang then tried to save face by presenting a jade pendant, claiming it was a betrothal gift from the Jiang family. Qi Delong immediately exposed his lie, stating he had stolen it from the Jiang Mansion. Furious, Qi Dong Qiang struck Qi Delong. Just then, Fang Yuncheng arrived and promptly kicked Qi Dong Qiang.
Qi Dong Qiang then argued with Fang Yuncheng, stating he raised Qi Delong only to sell her for a good price and would suffer a "big loss" otherwise. Qi Delong confronted him, questioning if her entire upbringing was merely a transaction. Qi Dong Qiang callously replied that he sent her to Lang Ya Pavilion for a good marriage, planning to take the betrothal gift and leave, but was disappointed she would associate with "lowlifes."
Fang Yuncheng condemned Qi Dong Qiang's actions, stating that a father who would ruin his daughter's reputation for money was unfit to be a human, let alone a father.
He then landed three powerful punches on Qi Dong Qiang: the first for Qi Delong, for taking her hard-earned money and ruining her reputation; the second to prove he was neither a good-for-nothing nor a lowlife, but someone who ran a respectable business; and the third simply because Qi Dong Qiang was "scum and depraved." He sternly warned Qi Dong Qiang to stay out of Qi Delong's life from that moment on.
The doctor reported to Jiang Master that Jiang Tianling's high fever persisted, likely due to general weakness. While not a major concern, the doctor observed a worrying symptom: Jiang Tianling's calves were becoming weak, and this condition seemed to be worsening, reminding him of Jiang Tianling's mother's own illness. Meanwhile, Instructor Hou announced that their lessons were concluding. Jiang Baiyu and the other students expressed their sadness and gratitude, comforting him as they thought he was reluctant to part.
Instructor Hou, however, surprised them by admitting he was happy they were finally graduating, calling them the "toughest students" he had ever taught. Despite this, he expressed genuine delight at witnessing their daily growth and confessed he had learned a great deal from them. As a parting gift, Instructor Hou presented Jiang Baiyu and Jiang Tianling each with a silver lock.
To commemorate their time together, Fang Yuncheng created five yearbooks for his classmates to fill out, and they all happily did so. While Qi Delong was at Fang Yuncheng's place, requesting some of his new facial masks, a maid arrived and took all the available masks, expressing how much she would miss Fang Yuncheng. Qi Delong, perplexed, immediately questioned Fang Yuncheng about his impending departure. A flashback revealed Fang Yuncheng discussing his situation with Old Madam Jiang and Jiang Master.
He took responsibility for the confrontation with Qi Delong's father. Jiang Master informed him that the government had ruled it a simple fight, which he would cover the compensation for. More significantly, Qi Dong Qiang had been banned from Chong'an for five years due to the severity of his rumor-spreading.
Fang Yuncheng then formally requested permission to leave the Jiang Mansion, explaining his desire to explore the outside world and discover his true potential, promising to return and repay their kindness if he achieved success. Old Madam Jiang and Jiang Master granted his request, acknowledging that children eventually fly from the nest.
Back in the present, Fang Yuncheng confessed to Qi Delong that he felt his past efforts had been misdirected, and it was time to abandon a mistaken path, despite his deep reluctance. Qi Delong urged him to reconsider, suggesting that what he perceived as wrong might actually be right. Fang Yuncheng gently rebuffed her attempts to comfort him, stating his decision was a difficult but firm one. He planned to seek new opportunities in the capital city. He specifically asked Qi Delong not to disclose his departure to Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia, as their exams were approaching, and he didn't want to distract them.
Episode 29 Recap
"We're about to part," Shui Wuxia mused, disappointed that Jiang Baiyu hadn't filled out her yearbook. She proactively filled it out for him, writing down her favorite color: white, favorite food: durian candy, favorite season: summer. For the most unforgettable thing, she wrote "Being chained together." She further whispered that she had many things she wanted to tell him and do with him.
She confessed she had been searching for her brother and planned to introduce Jiang Baiyu to him once found. However, she concluded that after the upcoming exam, they would become strangers. Unbeknownst to her, Jiang Baiyu stood outside, listening to her every word. A servant arrived with a letter for Shui Wuxia, but Jiang Baiyu intercepted him. The servant explained it was for Lady Shui.
Jiang Baiyu insisted on seeing it, despite the servant's hesitation, then read the letter, which Ba Xi had sent, detailing Ma Ru Long's hiding place. Jiang Baiyu told the servant that Shui Wuxia was in bed and to deliver it the following day, giving him money for his trouble. Xiao Kai Zhen endured intense pain from his medicinal bath. He realized that Jiang Baiyu's father had indeed added licorice to the prescription to regulate its properties.
Using a Phoenix Tail Needle, he tested the bathwater. Shen Qingli incapacitated the guards and entered Xiao Kai Zhen's chamber. Xiao Kai Zhen, initially unaware of his identity, asked why the swordsman sought him as they had no ill feelings. Shen Qingli revealed his true identity as Jiang Baiyu, son of Jiang Jue, and accused Xiao Kai Zhen of being involved in his father's death seven years prior, having witnessed him pointing a sword at his father.
Xiao Kai Zhen recognized him as Jiang Jue's son. He clarified that he had been trying to save Jiang Baiyu's father then. He explained that he was the one who hid Jiang Baiyu in an abandoned temple after his father's death. He admitted to asking Ma Ru Long to steal the antidote for the ice muscle poison prescription and leaving a book in Rain Alley, all to attract Jiang Baiyu's attention, hoping they could jointly seek out the real assassin.
Jiang Baiyu, though not fully convinced, put down his weapon, stating he spared Xiao Kai Zhen not out of belief, but because "Wu Xia is waiting for you." Xiao Kai Zhen then asked about Wu Xia's whereabouts, urging Jiang Baiyu to follow him through a secret shortcut, but Jiang Baiyu questioned if Xiao Kai Zhen had planned his rescue from the start. Xiao Kai Zhen confirmed there was no time to explain and they needed to go.
As they attempted to leave, Ma Ru Long's men stormed in. Black-clad guards engaged in a chaotic fight with Shen Qingli. Ma Ru Long then seized Xiao Kai Zhen. Shen Qingli deliberately dropped a fire source, causing a massive explosion. Shui Wuxia soon arrived at the devastated scene. She found Shen Qingli's mask and, tragically, discovered a body she believed to be her brother, Xiao Kai Zhen. Overwhelmed with grief, she collapsed.
A surviving black-clad guard, having overheard Shui Wuxia's cries of "Brother," reported to Ma Ru Long that Shui Wuxia was indeed Xiao Kai Zhen's sister. Jiang Baiyu, regaining consciousness, returned to the site and found Shui Wuxia unconscious beside the deceased. He carried her away. When Ba Xi arrived looking for Shui Wuxia, Jiang Baiyu silently departed. Ma Ru Long and Xiao Kai Zhen spoke.
Ma Ru Long realized Shen Qingli's true intention was not to kill Xiao Kai Zhen but to rescue him, and that Xiao Kai Zhen had orchestrated Shen Qingli's arrival. Xiao Kai Zhen noted the explosive substance from the previous night was similar to Five Eras Powder, suggesting Ma Ru Long had purified it from existing decoctions. Ma Ru Long then proposed a partnership with Xiao Kai Zhen, offering to release him.
Meanwhile, Ba Xi tried to comfort Shui Wuxia, who was still distraught over her brother's supposed death. Shui Wuxia questioned how she could forget her brother's scar or the look in his eyes, insisting the body wasn't him. Ba Xi mentioned that the officials hadn't identified the body, and Shui Wuxia held onto hope that her brother was alive.
Shui Wuxia then expressed her confusion and the need to investigate Shen Qingli, suspecting his involvement in the incident and her brother's perceived death. Ba Xi mentioned the servant's delay in delivering her letter with Ma Ru Long's hiding spot, which only reached Shui Wuxia that morning, too late to prevent the tragedy. Shui Wuxia further recalled past encounters, strengthening her belief that Jiang Baiyu and Shen Qingli might be the same person.
Ba Xi urged Shui Wuxia to calm down and not be impulsive, promising to send people to investigate Shen Qingli. Worried about Shui Wuxia's safety, Jiang Baiyu searched for her after finding her sword. Elsewhere, Shui Wuxia ventured out and witnessed a man forcing a woman to help someone, but the woman used medicinal powder to knock him out. Shui Wuxia was then caught by Ma Ru Long's men and brought before Xiao Kai Zhen.
The siblings were overjoyed at their unexpected reunion. Ma Ru Long revealed his intention to use Shui Wuxia to threaten Xiao Kai Zhen into cooperating. Faced with his sister's life on the line, Xiao Kai Zhen reluctantly agreed. As Xiao Kai Zhen worked on the purified substance, he feigned a tremor due to his illness, breaking a bowl and subtly kicking a sharp fragment to Shui Wuxia. Shui Wuxia discreetly began cutting her ropes.
Ma Ru Long noticed her actions and moved to cut off her arm. Just then, Shen Qingli burst in, injuring Ma Ru Long. While Shen Qingli fought the black-clad guards, Xiao Kai Zhen quickly untied Shui Wuxia. Ma Ru Long attempted to flee amidst the chaos but was swiftly apprehended and killed by Shen Qingli. Thinking the danger was over, Shen Qingli was then struck from behind and knocked unconscious by another hidden black-clad assailant.
Shui Wuxia cried out a warning, but it was too late. She quickly retaliated, knocking out the assailant herself. Frantically, Shui Wuxia tried to revive Shen Qingli, calling his name. When he didn't respond, she gently removed his mask, revealing the face of Jiang Baiyu, leaving her stunned by the revelation.
Episode 30 Recap
Xiao Kai Zhen revealed to Zhe Zhi the truth of what happened seven years ago. Someone had approached Jiang Baiyu's father to create a cure for an affliction known as "dark rash", but the person was desperate and insisted on testing the drug on living subjects. Jiang Baiyu's father naturally refused, leading to his murder. Afterward, Xiao Kai Zhen fled with an unconscious Jiang Baiyu and took refuge in an abandoned temple.
He deduced that the perpetrators, having failed in their own research, sought to abduct him due to his medical expertise as Jiang Jue’s assistant apothecary, forcing him to make the medicine for them. Xiao Kai Zhen explained that this medicine was very difficult to create, and human testing might offer a quicker path to hope. However, as a doctor, he could not condone such a method.
He shared that his recent research had yielded some results, though he was still investigating the side effects. He hoped that with more time, a cure could be developed without resorting to live human trials. Jiang Baiyu soon regained consciousness. However, he did not recognize Shui Wuxia, Zhe Zhi, or Xiao Kai Zhen. He only remembered being the young master of the Jiang Mansion and recalled his uncle, grandmother, younger brother, and servants.
He had forgotten his identity as Shen Qingli and his mission to seek revenge. Meanwhile, Jiang Hu surveyed the house where Ma Ru Long had died. He instructed Sun Gui to report to the officials that Ma Ru Long had died from an accidental explosion while making drugs, and to blame the previous explosion on him as well. He ordered Sun Gui to arrange the scene convincingly so the authorities could quickly close the case.
Jiang Hu then discovered a prescription that Xiao Kai Zhen had left behind. Xiao Kai Zhen had previously informed Ma Ru Long that this prescription could largely counteract "dark rash," but cautioned about potential side effects and complications. Sun Gui suggested they exploit Ma Ru Long's network of drug addicts for human testing. Jiang Hu agreed. Later, Ba Xi came to find Shui Wuxia and Xiao Kai Zhen.
With Ma Ru Long dead and Xiao Kai Zhen rescued, Shui Wuxia voiced her concern that the mastermind would undoubtedly make another move. Xiao Kai Zhen confirmed that his prescription, while effective against "dark rash," carried side effects. He predicted that the culprit would seek to infect a large number of people with tainted blood to induce "dark rash," thereby studying its complications.
Xiao Kai Zhen speculated that the mastermind would target vulnerable individuals such as the homeless, beggars, slaves, or drug addicts. Ba Xi then recalled that her men had reported about "opium poison" being secretly distributed in the alleys of Southern Chong'an. Shui Wuxia instructed Ba Xi to send her men to monitor the distribution and report any findings. Xiao Kai Zhen advised Shui Wuxia to provide Jiang Baiyu with appropriate stimulation, as it might help him recall his memories.
Taking Xiao Kai Zhen's advice, Shui Wuxia brought Jiang Baiyu to a place where they used to have dates. She talked about many of their past experiences, hoping he would remember something. However, Jiang Baiyu did not recall any of it and asked Shui Wuxia to stop talking about it. Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu went out for a drink.
They happened to see a group of people bullying others, so Shui Wuxia took Jiang Baiyu to act as chivalrous heroes. Just as they had done before, they snatched a money pouch, running through the streets and scattering coins, both feeling very happy. Shui Wuxia became intoxicated, and Jiang Baiyu carried her back to her room. She held onto his arm tightly, refusing to let go, so he let her hold it all night.
The next morning, Shui Wuxia's hand was numb when she woke up. Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling wrote a letter for Zhe Zhi and initially wanted a servant to deliver it. However, Qi Delong eagerly volunteered to deliver the letter, and Jiang Tianling entrusted it to her, emphasizing that it must be handed to Zhe Zhi personally. Later, Jiang Hu visited Jiang Tianling, bringing him medicine.
Jiang Tianling was experiencing severe tremors, unable to hold the medicine bowl steady, causing the medicine to spill. He questioned his father about what was happening. Jiang Hu dismissed his worries, telling him to rest and not overthink, attributing his condition to his recovery from a serious illness. That night, Shui Wuxia and Ba Xi went out to inquire about the "opium poison" distribution.
Ba Xi waited in the alleys of Southern Chong'an for a long time but did not see anyone distributing the drug. However, she heard that some people were reportedly distributing "opium poison" at an opium den in Northern Chong'an that evening. Shui Wuxia deduced that the Southern Chong'an location was merely a diversion by the mastermind for safety. She concluded that their true plan was to abduct people from the Northern Chong'an opium den.
Shui Wuxia instructed Ba Xi to return to Xiao Kai Zhen's place while she proceeded alone to the Northern Chong'an opium den to investigate. Elsewhere, on his way from the opium den, Sun Gui encountered Jiang Baiyu. He noticed a distinctive black powder under Jiang Baiyu's left fingernails. Sun Gui speculated that Jiang Baiyu might be Shen Qingli and immediately rushed to the Jiang Mansion to report his suspicion to Jiang Hu.
Episode 31 Recap
To verify Sun Gui's earlier claims about the black marks on Jiang Baiyu's hand, Jiang Hu summoned Jiang Baiyu. When Jiang Baiyu accidentally got his hands dirty while writing, Shui Wuxia saw it and cleaned them with a lemon before he went to meet Jiang Hu, effectively removing any potential black marks. When Jiang Hu met with Jiang Baiyu, he inquired about Jiang Tianling's recent health, a pretext to observe Jiang Baiyu's hands.
Jiang Baiyu assured him that while his younger brother was still a bit weak, his spirits seemed high. Jiang Hu then offered Jiang Baiyu a cup of tea, which Jiang Baiyu accepted with his right hand. Subsequently, Jiang Hu presented Jiang Baiyu with a gift, observing closely. Jiang Baiyu carefully set down the teacup and chose a gift with his right hand, never once using his left.
As Jiang Baiyu turned to leave, he paused, then returned to pour Jiang Hu a cup of tea, toasting him with tea instead of wine, and deliberately using his left hand. Jiang Hu scrutinized his left hand but found nothing amiss, dispelling his suspicions and concluding that Sun Gui must have been mistaken. Qi Delong delivered food to Fang Yuncheng, who seized the opportunity to invite her to drink with him in the classroom that evening.
Qi Delong eagerly went, only to find Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia already present. Fang Yuncheng invited them for drinks to bid farewell. During the farewell, Jiang Baiyu learned from Fang Yuncheng that Jiang Tianling had once harbored feelings for Shui Wuxia, a revelation that made Jiang Baiyu jealous. Later that night, still affected by the news, Jiang Baiyu, while playing with a lemon, accidentally sprayed juice into Shui Wuxia's eyes.
He quickly tried to wipe her eyes and apply eyedrops, but she still couldn't open them. He offered his room for her to rest, and she happily lay down, taking off her shoes. He covered her with a blanket, and she gently tugged at his sleeve, prompting him to sit by the bed. The next morning, Shui Wuxia awoke to find Jiang Baiyu asleep beside her bed. They gazed at each other silently.
Meanwhile, Qi Delong, after failing to get a response from Fang Yuncheng's room, learned from a maid that he had left early. She rushed out in pursuit but could not catch him. Fang Yuncheng, however, saw a message Qi Delong had written in an alumni yearbook. He returned and overheard Qi Delong lamenting to herself in his room that she didn't dislike or hate him. He then stepped out and asked if she truly didn't hate him.
After Fang Yuncheng did her makeup, Qi Delong spontaneously kissed him. News quickly spread throughout the mansion about Fang Yuncheng and Qi Delong. Jiang Tianling, upon tasting his medicine, noticed a difference and requested the dregs from a servant. He then consulted medical texts and discovered his symptoms matched those of "dark rash", a severe illness. He then had a servant take him to meet Jiang Hu, asking if his illness was just a cold. Jiang Hu affirmed it was.
Before leaving, Jiang Tianling described the severe symptoms of Anfei. Fearing his condition might suddenly worsen, Jiang Tianling asked Jiang Baiyu and others for help to sneak out and see Zhe Zhi. They readily agreed. As they discreetly helped him leave the mansion, the maids, nurses, and even Supervisor Hou pretended not to notice. Jiang Baiyu and others helped Jiang Tianling to meet Zhe Zhi. Seeing his struggle to walk, Zhe Zhi was heartbroken.
Upon their return, Old Madam Jiang and Jiang Hu expressed profound worry, with Jiang Hu reprimanding Jiang Baiyu for assisting Jiang Tianling. Jiang Tianling, displaying remarkable optimism, stated that sickness and death were inevitable, and he was simply facing it earlier. Jiang Tianling then requested to go out for one day on the Lantern Festival.
Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia promised to take excellent care of him, and Old Madam Jiang finally consented, on the condition that he return immediately if he felt any discomfort. On the night of the Lantern Festival, Jiang Baiyu, Shui Wuxia, Jiang Tianling, Zhe Zhi, Fang Yuncheng, and Qi Delong embarked on their outing. Jiang Tianling and Zhe Zhi went for a walk, enjoying their time together, while Fang Yuncheng and Qi Delong also ventured off on a romantic stroll.
Shui Wuxia went to buy Jiang Baiyu a limited-edition flavored cotton candy. Then, as he looked at a small fish and the fireworks exploding in the night sky, a flood of memories from his past life as Shen Qing Li rushed back to him. He remembered Shui Wuxia and their shared past, which included a profound promise to spend his life with her, filled with quarrels and laughter.
Episode 32 (Ending) Recap
Jiang Hu went to the pharmacy to get medicine for Jiang Tianling. He held the prescription, contemplating that he couldn't administer it to Ling'er without absolute certainty, and then left. Shui Wuxia later arrived at the pharmacy to prepare Vigor Soup for Jiang Tianling. She found some other medicine on a piece of paper, and after smelling it and comparing it with the herbs in the pharmacy, realized the prescription was remarkably similar to her brother Xiao Kai Zhen's.
She questioned a servant, who revealed that only Jiang Hu had been there besides her that day. Sun Gui arrived to inform Jiang Hu that the authorities were intensely investigating the disappearances of drug addicts, making their current drug testing operation too risky. Jiang Hu instructed him to deploy more men for security around and along the route, but Sun Gui worried that if discovered, their entire operation would be compromised.
He suggested giving Jiang Tianling Xiao Kai Zhen's prescription, believing that even with side effects, it was preferable to inaction. Jiang Hu adamantly refused to endanger Ling'er, yet conceded that his son's condition was critical and couldn't wait. Unbeknownst to them, Jiang Baiyu overheard their entire conversation. When a maid greeted Jiang Baiyu, Jiang Hu turned, and he and Sun Gui vanished. Jiang Baiyu, reflecting on the overheard conversation, realized that Jiang Hu was his father's murderer.
Meanwhile, Shui Wuxia brought the suspicious prescription to her brother, Xiao Kai Zhen, who confirmed it was indeed his. He connected the dots, concluding that Jiang Hu was responsible for Jiang Jue's murder seven years prior and also for abducting him to develop this medicine. Jiang Baiyu visited Old Madam Jiang, bringing her calming medicine.
He confessed that he felt he had disappointed her over the years, to which she responded with understanding, acknowledging his pain since his father's passing and expressing relief that Shui Wuxia was by his side. Jiang Baiyu then asked her for support, questioning what he should do if he had to undertake actions without a choice. Old Madam Jiang, trusting his judgment, encouraged him to proceed.
Jiang Baiyu then entered Jiang Tianling's room, gently picking up a fallen medical book and placing it beside his sleeping brother before covering him with a blanket. He reflected on their childhood, recalling their father teaching them about herbs and their uncle about reading and writing, and their playful competitions.
He spoke to his sleeping brother, lamenting how much he had hidden over the past seven years, believing it would protect him, and expressed his resolve to do what he must. The next day, Shui Wuxia met with Zhe Zhi and Ba Xi. Ba Xi led his brothers to Huadengfang to search. Meanwhile, Jiang Hu arrived at Sun Gui's hidden location with the tainted blood.
He heard that Shen Qingli had invited him to meet in the woods behind Jiang Mansion. Jiang Hu handed the tainted blood to Sun Gui, instructing him to administer it in two hours, before departing to meet Shen Qingli. Jiang Hu went to the woods alone to meet Shen Qingli. Upon Shen Qingli's arrival, he removed his mask, revealing himself to be Jiang Baiyu.
Jiang Hu, seemingly unsurprised, remarked that Jiang Baiyu already knew he was coming and challenged him to bring out his men. Jiang Baiyu calmly stated that he had no men with him, asserting that this was a private family matter between them, requiring no outsiders. Old Madam Jiang felt an ominous thumping in her heart and noticed the sky becoming suddenly overcast, considering it a bad omen. She asked A'Chang to escort her to the woods for some fresh air.
Meanwhile, Jiang Tianling, feeling bored from days of reading in his four-wheeler and missing Jiang Baiyu, requested a servant to take him to his older brother. The servant, recalling Jiang Baiyu leaving with his sword that morning, presumed he was practicing in the woods outside the mansion and pushed Jiang Tianling there, who welcomed the chance for fresh air.
In the woods, Jiang Baiyu confronted Jiang Hu, who began by recounting his desperation seven years ago when Ling'er's mother suffered from a strange illness. He claimed Jiang Jue had prevented him from testing the drug on living people, leading Jiang Baiyu to accuse him of his father's murder and the monstrous crime of killing innocent lives.
Jiang Hu dismissed Jiang Baiyu's "righteousness" as he had never known his despair, defiantly asking if it was fair for beggars and addicts to live while his wife and son faced death. He announced that the hour was up, and the tainted blood had been administered, promising a cure for Ling'er and offering his own life in exchange for Jiang Jue's.
Just then, Shui Wuxia and Zhe Zhi arrived, presenting the tainted blood, revealing that Ba Xi's men had located and destroyed the secret drug test site, seizing the blood. Zhe Zhi confronted Jiang Hu, revealing that Jiang Jue had actually been testing the drug on himself to save Jiang Hu's wife, a truth that shocked and enraged Jiang Hu, who accused them of conspiracy.
Old Madam Jiang arrived, distraught, and furiously condemned Jiang Hu for murdering his brother and countless innocents, questioning what she had done to raise such an unfilial son and pleading for praise she never gave him. A tearful Jiang Hu countered, expressing his resentment at never receiving a word of praise despite his efforts to uphold the family after Jiang Jue's death. Announcing he would pay for his crimes with his life, he tried to commit suicide.
Old Madam Jiang desperately pleaded with him, admitting her own fault for focusing solely on Jiang Jue's strengths and neglecting Jiang Hu's pain. Jiang Tianling, arriving in his four-wheeler, witnessed the scene and frantically asked what was happening. Jiang Hu, calling himself useless for failing to cure Ling'er, expressed his exhaustion and desire to join his wife, then tragically stabbed himself.
Old Madam Jiang fainted, and Jiang Tianling collapsed to his father's side, heartbroken, begging Xiao Kai Zhen to save him. Xiao Kai Zhen quickly stabilized Jiang Tianling's condition, reassuring Jiang Baiyu that while the disease remained incurable, he would strive to control its progression, giving Jiang Tianling another five to ten years. He also vowed to perfect Jiang Jue's original prescription during this time.
Xiao Kai Zhen acknowledged the past family feud between the Jiang and Xiao families but suggested putting it behind them, citing their shared illness and the love between Shui Wuxia and Jiang Baiyu. He promised to regularly check Jiang Tianling's pulse and administer acupuncture. Old Madam Jiang, seeking to atone for Jiang Hu's sins, decided to establish altars to bring peace to the innocent souls lost and to locate and treat their families with kindness and generosity.
She also resolved to halt all Jiang family businesses and, moving forward, open free clinics and porridge kitchens year-round in various locations to aid the impoverished. Jiang Tianling told Jiang Baiyu that his father, Jiang Hu, had wanted to apologize to him before his death. He explained that while Jiang Hu might be seen as a sinner by others, to him, he was a good father, and then apologized to Jiang Baiyu on his father's behalf.
Jiang Baiyu gently accepted the apology, urging his brother to rest well as they would face the upcoming exams together. Jiang Tianling later informed Jiang Baiyu that he would not be participating in the martial arts exam and asked him to do his best for both of them. Jiang Baiyu reflected on the seven years he had waited for the truth, realizing that while he expected satisfaction, the reality was cruelly painful.
Shui Wuxia asked when he discovered Jiang Hu's role, and he revealed it was the night they watched the moon. She chided him for not telling her and confronting Jiang Hu alone, to which he retorted that she hadn't told him everything either. He then offered to be Jiang Baiyu for her, or Shen Qingli if she preferred. Shui Wuxia responded that whether he was Jiang Baiyu or Shen Qingli, she loved only him, and they shared a tender moment.
Fang Yuncheng and Qi Delong opened a makeup shop, having borrowed their startup capital from Jiang Baiyu. Qi Delong expressed worry about losing money, but Fang Yuncheng, confident in his skills as Chong'an's best beautician, reassured her. He then playfully asked if she would get jealous with so many girls around, to which she simply replied no. Jiang Tianling brought Zhe Zhi to see the pear blossoms, addressing his deceased mother and introducing Zhe Zhi as her daughter-in-law.
Zhe Zhi playfully chided him for being "shameless," leading Jiang Tianling to begin a lecture on the term, which Zhe Zhi interrupted. He then suggested the romantic setting was perfect for a kiss, but Zhe Zhi reminded him his mother was watching. Jiang Tianling playfully suggested they close their eyes and pretend not to see her. The Hou instructor gathered the Chong'an Ministry of Inspection and Reserve candidates at Jiang Mansion to announce their imminent departure for the capital.
He introduced Shui Wuxia as their accompanying supervisor. Shui Wuxia then invited Jiang Baiyu to describe her style, to which he teasingly called her meticulous, ruthless, and troublesome. She interjected, stating that, most importantly, she valued righteousness in family and friends, promising he would understand its necessity in the future.
As they prepared to depart, Jiang Baiyu and Shui Wuxia reminisced about their initial incompatibility, how they were once "fire and water" and "poles apart," but were now "together through thick and thin." Jiang Baiyu vowed that in the capital, he would be docile and obedient, never letting them be apart again, attributing their strong bond to their unique love, as pure as white jade.
