Judge Dee's Mystery Episode 30 Recap
> Judge Dee's Mystery Recap
The two passed through the "Tongfu Inn" in a dilapidated village to rest, where they encountered an old woman searching for her grandson Wei Xiaobao. Her behavior was erratic, but it did not attract much attention from the people present. Early the next morning, the village was covered in cold fog. Di Renjie saw that Crescent Spring was only separated from them by one mountain, so he decided to continue their journey, not wanting the trip to be in vain.
Halfway through their journey, the wind and snow gradually intensified. A group of refugees were walking towards them, and there was even an ox-cart stuck in a ditch, unable to get out. The crying of children seemed particularly pathetic. Di Renjie offered help and accidentally got injured. Seeing that the road ahead was covered by heavy snow, Cao An discussed returning to Lanfang first with Di Renjie.
However, due to an infection in his wound, Di Renjie developed a high fever, experienced hallucinations, and eventually fell unconscious. Cao An could only continue driving. Finally, she found Chaoyun Academy in the desolate wilderness. The door was opened by a young man named Zhou Li. When Cao An asked to see Mr. Cui Haoran, he directly refused. For this, Cao An showed her government official's token to explain their purpose.
Although Zhou Li had reservations, he still asked Cao An to wait at the entrance for a moment. Soon, Cui Haoran's student, Li Miao, came out with Zhou Li. He had some medical knowledge and offered to bandage Di Renjie's wound himself. However, because his teacher Cui Haoran was currently assigned by the Minister of Rites to compile local historical records, it was inconvenient for him to be disturbed.
He hoped that Cao An and her companions would leave as soon as possible. Seeing this, Cao An showed her government official's token to explain their purpose. As expected, Zhou Li had some reservations and asked her to wait at the entrance for a moment. Soon a young man followed Zhou Li out. This person was Cui Haoran's student, Li Miao, who had some medical knowledge.
He said he would personally bandage Di Renjie's wound but was also constrained because his teacher was assigned by the Minister of Rites to compile local historical records for this area and should not be disturbed by outsiders. He hoped it would be best for Cao An and her companions to leave as soon as possible. However, Cao An showed Li Miao Di Renjie's昏迷 state.
Li Miao also considered that the road was blocked by heavy snow and they had nowhere else to go. He couldn't bear the heavy responsibility if refusing them led to the death of a government official. So, he settled the two in a room where old books were stored. Meanwhile, Ma Rong learned about the snow disaster in the south from refugees.
Worried about the safety of Di Renjie and Cao An, he reported the situation directly to Hong Liang, and then rode south with Qiao Tai to search for them. Li Miao examined Di Renjie's body. Besides slight signs of poisoning, the main issue was accumulated heart fire and illness due to overwork. Di Renjie woke up and saw Li Miao. Learning that he was in Cui Haoran's Chaoyun Academy, he wanted to get up and go see him.
Because of Di Renjie's insistence, Li Miao could only lead the way for him and said that if he had any needs, he only needed to ask Cao An to instruct the disciples in the academy. Outside Cui Haoran's room, Di Renjie looked through the window and saw him sitting upright and solemn, his eyes slightly lowered, as if meditating. A strong scent of sandalwood filled the air.
Li Miao explained that his teacher, in order to gain clarity in his writing and seek true historical insight, would isolate himself in silence for focused meditation after studying historical materials, thus the sandalwood served a calming purpose. Precisely because Cui Haoran was in seclusion, it was truly inconvenient for Di Renjie to disturb him. He simply turned back and gave his cherished agarwood to Li Miao, hoping he would pass it on to the elderly Mr.
Cui Haoran on his behalf. On the way back, Cao An saw Zhou Li looking flustered. Although he said he was going to get firewood to warm Di Renjie, the direction he was heading was opposite to that of the wood shed. Cao An told Di Renjie to lie in bed and rest well, and then immediately went to help Li Miao decoct the medicine. Di Renjie found it difficult to fall asleep.
Suddenly, he felt a gust of wind blow open the door. As he dragged his ailing body out of bed to close the door, he saw a boy in a white robe running away from him, as if he had encountered something terrifying. However, Di Renjie's body couldn't handle it and he fainted in the snow. After Cao An and Li Miao helped him back into the room, he briefly described the strange incident he had just witnessed.
Li Miao thought Di Renjie was having hallucinations due to his illness, but Di Renjie insisted that he had seen it with his own eyes. Naturally, Cao An believed Di Renjie's words. Meanwhile, on the other side, Ma Rong and Qiao Tai were riding their horses in circles on the original path, unable to determine their direction.
This sent a chill down their spines as they recalled Hong Liang's warning that the south was prone to generating Yin and evil spirits. While taking care of Di Renjie, Cao An heard strange noises outside the door and felt suspicious. She went out and followed the sound, only to see Zhou Li standing on the rooftop, shouting and laughing loudly, muttering about monsters and demons. Zhou Li cast a glance at Cao An, seemingly with something to say.
Finally, he bit his fingertip and wrote a character on his palm, then immediately leaped and jumped, dying on the spot. Cao An examined Zhou Li's palm, and the blood-red character "嵬" was strikingly visible. She immediately suggested going to take a look at Zhou Li's room. Li Miao told Cao An that Zhou Li came from a poor background and stayed at Chaoyun Academy because of his sincere desire for learning.
He was originally a smart child, but a few days ago, he suddenly developed a hysterical disorder, often talking nonsense in the middle of the night. The disciple Lin Shu nearby added confirmation to this situation.
