Despite Wang Sanlang's confession, Di Renjie firmly believed the real killer was someone else. He personally sketched portraits of the four child soldiers and asked Ba Zong to investigate their specific whereabouts. Hong Liang investigated the military camp's procurement documents for Di Renjie; supplies had been quite ample recently, indicating a significant corruption problem.

Di Renjie was very angry about this and went to Mingyue Lane in the rain, telling Cao An through the door that he would talk to her after the case was over. Afterward, Di Renjie came to the watchtower and saw Huang Ying'er dressed in feather clothes, preparing to jump off the building. In desperation, he stopped Huang Ying'er by calling out the Rain Master's name and questioned her again about the cause of Zhong Fang's death.

However, Huang Ying'er was emotionally agitated; not only did she not answer Di Renjie's questions, but she also took advantage of his unpreparedness and jumped down. Almost at the same time, an eagle circled and cried out in the night sky, seemingly confirming Huang Ying'er's wish had come true. Di Renjie looked at Huang Ying'er's corpse, further confirming his guess. Initially, Zhong Fang met Huang Ying'er at the theater and fell in love with her at first sight.

Because Huang Ying'er was infatuated with the Rain Master, he dressed up as the Rain Master to meet her privately. As time went on, the two fell in love, but Zhong Fang never let Huang Ying'er see his true face. Later, Zhong Fang was murdered, and his body appeared at the watchtower.

Because he was not wearing a mask, Huang Ying'er saw Zhong Fang's true appearance for the first time and could not believe that the Rain Master she deeply loved was a mortal. In rage and breakdown, Huang Ying'er picked up the military knife left by the killer and added another stab to the already dead Zhong Fang, mistakenly believing she was the real killer.

During a night of thunderstorms, Cao An was worried about Di Renjie's safety and hurried to the county yamen, only to learn that Di Renjie had not yet returned. Hong Liang revealed that Di Renjie was about to be transferred to Lanfang and hoped Cao An could go with him. At this time, a soldier notified Di Renjie to quickly go and save people.

By the time Di Renjie arrived at the military camp, it was too late; he saw that the child soldiers had been hanged by Officer Li. Di Renjie angrily accused Officer Li of disregarding human life, saying he should have waited for him to find out the truth before drawing conclusions. But Officer Li stated that these four were beggars he had picked up from outside, and he had painstakingly taught them to shed their bad habits and become soldiers.

He did not want the dignity they had built up to disappear because of other crimes, making all his efforts futile. Officer Li warned Di Renjie not to interfere further, as the military camp was his territory. Di Renjie, feeling powerless after witnessing the deaths of Huang Ying'er and the soldiers, went alone to Mingyue Lane and confided in Cao An through a door, mocking himself for being unable to save anyone. Hearing this made Cao An feel uneasy.

The mistress of the lane knew Cao An was interested in Di Renjie, but Cao An was afraid to take that step. Facing the unknown environment and outcome, she felt uneasy. Following him without hesitation didn't guarantee a good ending. The next morning, Di Renjie woke up and found himself in Cao An's room. Cao An had left a maidservant to look after him but had disappeared herself.

Ba Zong's investigation results showed that the four child soldiers went out not for pleasure but to a restaurant. From the restaurant owner's confession, Di Renjie learned that they were not wearing knives. Instead, Officer Li and Shopkeeper Xie from the salt shop were discussing upstairs and later took them away. This clue completely overturned Officer Li's statement, proving he was deliberately lying and concealing something.

It was precisely because of this that Di Renjie followed Shopkeeper Xie all the way to the hiding place and discovered a large number of supplies that had been applied for by the military. Di Renjie took Qiao Tai and Ma Rong to arrest Officer Li, but they were countered. Officer Li first found out that Qiao Tai was a deserter and subjected him to brutal interrogation, leaving him severely injured. Qiao Tai was barely clinging to life.

Ma Rong recounted his past to Di Renjie, revealing that he was once a subordinate of General Meng and eloped with the sub-lieutenant's young wife because he fell in love with her. However, the young wife returned because she couldn't adapt to the difficult life, and he was left with the charge of being a deserter. Just as Ma Rong was angrily accusing Qiao Tai, Officer Li was preparing to execute Qiao Tai in public.

At the critical moment, Di Renjie, quick-witted, shouted out Officer Li's various misdeeds, stalling for time until Hong Liang arrived to expose Officer Li's embezzlement. Finally, Officer Li was brought to justice for his crimes, and Qiao Tai was safe and sound. Upon waking, he worried about Di Renjie knowing his past, but thankfully Ma Rong was willing to hide it for him. Ma Rong lied, saying Qiao Tai was framed in the military camp, and Di Renjie believed him.

The mistress of Mingyue Lane saw that Cao An and Di Renjie were mutually fond of each other, so she deliberately released the news that Di Renjie was in danger to make Cao An anxiously rush to find him. Cao An later realized the mistress's good intentions. When she returned to Mingyue Lane, she saw her playing the pipa solo, and a new recruitment notice had been posted outside. The two exchanged a smile.
