Chen Pingping faced Fan Xian’s accusations with composure. He stated that the jewelry he gave to Lin Wan'er and Fan Xian was all bestowed by Qing Di. Fan Xian exposed that Chen Pingping used money from embezzlement and bribery to make Chen Garden extravagantly luxurious, filled with rare treasures. Chen Pingping explained that the garden was not his private property but belonged to the royal family of Qing Kingdom; he merely had the right to use it.

Qing Di rejected Fan Xian’s accusations against Chen Pingping. Lai Mingcheng listed the crimes of Fan Jian and Fan Xian one by one. He accused the Fan family of opening a brothel privately, which was inappropriate, and claimed Fan Jian had failed in raising his son, tarnishing his official reputation. Qing Di heard that someone was beaten to death in the Bao Yue Brothel.

Lai Mingcheng found that Li Chengze was involved and wanted to report the issues one by one. Fan Jian admitted his failure in teaching his son. While it was improper for Fan Sizhe to open the brothel, it did not violate the law. He had already ordered Fan Sizhe to shut it down and sent him to a bitter and desolate place for reformation.

Lai Mingcheng insisted on a severe punishment for Fan Sizhe and demanded demotion and harsh rebukes for both Fan Jian and Fan Xian. Qing Di sought Lin Ruofu’s opinion. Lin Ruofu advised investigating the murder case at Bao Yue Brothel first, then holding Fan Jian accountable for poor family discipline. Qin Ye supported Lin Ruofu’s proposal. Lai Mingcheng accused Li Chengze of ordering Fan Wujiu to kill and silence a witness.

Li Chengze quickly knelt and confessed, claiming he was deceived by Fan Wujiu and that all the crimes were solely committed by Fan Wujiu. Lai Mingcheng discovered that fifteen court officials had large sums of money of unknown origin and were closely tied to Li Chengze. He pleaded with Qing Di to thoroughly investigate the smuggling involving Li Yunrui and Li Chengze.

The entire court was in an uproar at this news, but Qing Di refused the request on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Lai Mingcheng then asked for a retrial of Fan Wujiu. Meanwhile, Fan Wujiu opened the hidden compartment of the book Li Chengze had sent him, finding a packet of poison inside. Realizing everything, he took the poison and committed suicide on the spot.

Li Chengze agreed to the retrial of Fan Wujiu and instructed the Fan family to take responsibility for the girls and miscellaneous people at Bao Yue Brothel. Fan Xian readily agreed. Qing Di decreed that Li Chengze would be confined for six months and that Fan Jian and Fan Xian would forfeit six months of salary as a warning to others. Lai Mingcheng believed the punishment was too lenient and insisted on demotion for Fan Jian and Fan Xian.

Qing Di advised him not to be overly persistent. Lai Mingcheng then impeached the entire Imperial Inspectorate for having unclear laws and excessive power, proposing to distribute their dossiers to the Six Ministries and have Chen Pingping retire. The civil and military officials were all stunned. Qing Di, citing fatigue, rose to leave. Lai Mingcheng knelt and declared that he would impeach Qing Di himself, stating, “If the upper beam is not straight, the lower beams will be crooked.

” The officials rebuked Lai Mingcheng fiercely, prompting Qing Di to fly into a rage. Lai Mingcheng remained defiant and was beaten by the officials. Li Chengqian pinched his thigh hard, cried in pain, and berated Lai Mingcheng for not understanding Qing Di, loudly praising Qing Di’s virtues. Xin Qiwu also wept for Qing Di’s injustice. Fan Xian and Fan Jian spoke in Lai Mingcheng’s defense.

Qin Ye and Lin Ruofu believed Lai Mingcheng was also acting for the good of the country and pleaded with Qing Di for leniency. Qing Di, gritting his teeth, praised Lai Mingcheng’s actions and said he would reward him. Chen Pingping suggested giving the box of jewelry to Lai Mingcheng. On Qing Di’s order, Lai Mingcheng was beaten to death. Fan Xian pleaded for him, but Qing Di ordered Fan Xian to oversee the execution.

The heavens were enraged by Qing Di’s unjust verdict. Thunder and lightning erupted, and a torrential rain began. Fan Xian, now the execution supervisor, ran through the rain to the outskirts of the imperial city. Seeing Lai Mingcheng beaten and bloody, he couldn’t bear to watch him die unjustly. He wanted to plead with Qing Di, but it was too late—Lai Mingcheng had been beaten to death. Fan Xian returned home in silence.

As his carriage passed the Imperial Inspectorate, Chen Pingping was waiting at the gate. Fan Xian didn’t want to see anyone and ordered Wang Qinian to speed up. The Shadow forcibly stopped the carriage and brought Fan Xian to see Chen Pingping. Chen Pingping took Fan Xian to a secret room—the command center of the Imperial Inspectorate. Through hidden mechanisms, Chen Pingping issued orders to the divisions.

Fan Xian then learned that this room and its devices were left behind by his mother, Ye Qingmei. Fan Xian was bewildered and couldn’t understand why Qing Di had Lai Mingcheng, who was wholeheartedly loyal to the country, beaten to death. Chen Pingping explained that Lai Mingcheng had touched Qing Di’s reverse scale. The Imperial Inspectorate was independent of the Six Ministries and answered only to Qing Di.

Lai Mingcheng accessed their files to investigate the smuggling case, which undermined Qing Di’s authority. After Fan Xian took over the Inspectorate, the censors from the Censorate would treat him as an enemy. Fan Xian felt a chill and, for the first time, saw Qing Di’s cruelty and ruthlessness. He couldn’t help but recall the tragic death of his mother, Ye Qingmei. Chen Pingping advised him to tread carefully from now on. Fan Ruoruo was intelligent and studious.

Not only did she read extensively, but she also taught herself medicine. Fan Xian, feeling distressed, went to confide in her. She comforted him and vowed to protect him. Fan Xian began teaching her anatomy by dissecting a duck. Deng Ziyue, under Fan Xian’s orders, burned all the indenture contracts of the brothel girls, giving them the freedom to choose whether to stay or leave. Those who stayed would only perform and no longer sell their bodies. The girls cheered with joy. Sang Wen wished to stay at the brothel, and the others also asked to remain.
