Zhuo Lanjiang and Pan Yue disguised themselves and went to Jishantang. Upon seeing Gu Yong, they immediately said they wanted to buy Pan Yue's life. Although Gu Yong felt the two looked familiar, he didn't think much of it. Zhuo Lanjiang directly took out five hundred taels of silver. Pan Yue continued speaking, saying that Jishantang could even kill in the method they desired. Gu Yong responded that would cost extra. Zhuo Lanjiang produced another five hundred taels.

Pan Yue stepped forward, requesting for the victim to die in the same way as the Lantern Festival case victims. Gu Yong's expression immediately changed. Pan Yue took the opportunity to tear off his disguise—turns out, this Gu Yong was an imposter. Because all purchases by Jishantang, from clothes to shoes, were done in pairs. The fake Gu Yong, enraged, summoned many people to surround them.

Pan Yue and Zhuo Lanjiang tore off each other's disguises, finally meeting the real Gu Yong. Gu Yong claimed the Lantern Festival case had nothing to do with him. Pan Yue asked to see the Blood Sword, which Gu Yong had someone bring out. Gu Yong insisted he had no connection to the Lantern Festival or the Evil Jiao. He had his tendons severed over a decade ago and had never used a sword since.

The Gu family only had his son, Gu Shan Hui, who died five years ago. Pan Yue and Zhuo Lanjiang decided to leave but were stopped by Gu Yong. Jishantang killed according to its own rules. Gu Yong pointed the Blood Sword at Pan Yue but was blocked by Zhuo Lanjiang. Gu Yong spoke flawlessly, clearly prepared in advance.

As the two were in the courtyard, they suddenly saw Madam Gu running out in a frenzy, claiming Gu Yong was the killer. The servant said she'd gone mad since their son died. The two returned to the county office. Gu Yong’s right hand was disabled, and the murderer used the right hand to kill, temporarily clearing him of suspicion. Yang Caiwei and Zhuo Lanjiang behaved intimately, making Pan Yue feel uneasy.

A Ze thought Pan Yue cared a lot about Yang Caiwei, suspecting he really liked her. If Yang Caiwei agreed to become Zhuo Lanjiang’s gang wife, things might change. Yang Caiwei wanted to meet Madam Gu, but since their earlier actions had alerted the enemy, sneaking in wouldn’t be easy. However, Zhuo Lanjiang saw a back door today that might be usable. Pan Yue asked Zhuo Lanjiang to protect Yang Caiwei's life and, most importantly, stall Gu Yong.

Zhuo Lanjiang was the best candidate, meaning Pan Yue would have to take Yang Caiwei in. That night, Zhuo Lanjiang and Yang Caiwei split from Pan Yue. A dog suddenly emerged from a dog hole, startling Yang Caiwei. Zhuo Lanjiang stalled Gu Yong while Yang Caiwei and Pan Yue discovered that Madam Gu was being force-fed medicine by Gu Yong and was pretending to cook, acting oddly.

Zhuo Lanjiang apologized for the incident, claiming ties to the four major families and offering his private wine as an apology. Madam Gu went to the back garden but was dragged back by servants—it was Gu Yong who never let her go there. Yang Caiwei and Pan Yue found a mechanism in the garden and opened a secret door. It looked like a dungeon, and as soon as they entered, the door closed behind them.

The marks on the wall matched the wounds on the Lantern Festival case victims exactly, and there were broken chains on the ground. Gu Yong warned Zhuo Lanjiang not to get entangled with the county office or face future trouble. Zhuo Lanjiang probed for deeper secrets within Jishantang, but Gu Yong denied everything. Yang Caiwei noticed blood-stained handprints on the ground, indicating someone alive had been imprisoned here.

Seeing this, Pan Yue was reminded of unpleasant childhood memories and was suddenly overwhelmed by a severe headache. Yang Caiwei recalled how Pan Yue was often mocked as a bastard when young and once nearly strangled another noble’s son. Pan’s father had tied him up in the dungeon in anger. Perhaps the current scene triggered his deepest fears. Back then, it was Yang Caiwei who had broken in and saved him. She now sang the childhood nursery rhyme to awaken Pan Yue’s consciousness.
