Years after a devastating war between the Ice Tribe and the Fire Tribe, Prince Ka Suo stands on the coast of Lian Qiu Rock, gazing across the Endless Sea at his desolate kingdom. His tears, falling on bloodstains, transform into striking red crystals as painful memories resurface from the past, harking back to a time of prosperity.

In the past, the Ice Prince Ka Suo was playing with his snow lion when a servant reminded him that it was his 130th birthday and he needed to prepare for his coming-of-age ceremony in the City of Bladed Snow. His younger half-brother, Ying Kong Shi, was nowhere to be found, as he disliked such formal events. Ka Suo went to the Forest of Snow and Fog to search for him, where he encountered an old grandma.

She recognized Ka Suo, acknowledging he had grown into an adult, and pointed him towards Ying Kong Shi. There, Ka Suo found Ying Kong Shi being mocked and bullied by other children for his inability to perform magic. As the children prepared to attack him with ice spells, Ka Suo intervened, freezing their magic mid-air and rescuing his brother.

Ying Kong Shi, feeling like a "mirage" due to his name and lack of magical ability, expressed his reluctance to attend the ceremony, believing his presence was dispensable. Ka Suo, however, insisted and brought him back to the City of Bladed Snow on his snow lion. Meanwhile, in the mortal realm, Li Luo, a powerful realm guardian dedicated to protecting the Ice Tribe, was overseeing the selection of new guardians.

At the Altar of Wind and Rain, she designed a test for food supplies, requiring participants to rely on their own capabilities. One contestant, motivated by self-interest, harmed his companions, leading Li Luo to disqualify him, asserting that a true guardian must maintain peace, resist invasion, and not betray allies for personal gain. When the contestant challenged her, Li Luo swiftly defeated him, advising him to practice more.

Back in the City of Bladed Snow, Ka Suo and Ying Kong Shi arrived at the palace, which was filled with celebration. Princess Lan Shang of the Mermaid Tribe, attended by her saint, observed Ka Suo with a hidden agenda. Lian Ji, the Ice King's favored concubine and Ying Kong Shi's mother, quickly decided to leave with her son, curtly declining the Ice Queen's attempt to persuade her to stay by stating she felt unwell.

Suddenly, realm guardians at the city's perimeter spotted a group from the Fire Tribe. Prince Xin Jue of the Fire Tribe, an uninvited guest, soon crashed Ka Suo's coming-of-age ceremony. Presenting a gift from his father, he then made a provocative request: to spar with Ka Suo, renowned as the Ice Tribe's most magically gifted god. Xin Jue implied that the Ice Tribe's magic might be overrated if Ka Suo refused.

Ka Suo accepted, but proposed a different kind of competition: a test of magic on the nearby Frost Lake. They would see if Xin Jue could boil the lake first, or if Ka Suo could freeze it first, without using weapons. The stakes were high; if Ka Suo lost, he would have to endure three of Xin Jue's fiery attacks without resistance.

Onlookers worried that a victory for Ka Suo would give the Fire Tribe an excuse for war, while a loss would diminish the Ice Tribe's magical reputation. As Xin Jue successfully boiled the center of the lake, Ka Suo froze the surrounding water. At that moment, Ying Kong Shi cleverly appeared with a group of children.

Ka Suo seized the opportunity, telling them that Prince Xin Jue had melted the ice into warm water for them to play in, and encouraged them to thank him. This ingenious move allowed Xin Jue to retreat with honor, diffusing a potential conflict between the two tribes without a clear victor. Lan Shang observed Ka Suo with growing admiration. Later, Ying Kong Shi questioned why Ka Suo allowed Xin Jue to leave gracefully.

Ka Suo explained his desire to maintain the hard-won peace between their tribes, as neither a win nor a loss was a viable option. He confessed he never wanted to be king, wishing instead for the freedom of a sleet bird to fly wherever it pleased, unburdened by the king's responsibilities he had witnessed in his father.

Ying Kong Shi promised to help Ka Suo fulfill his wish, assuring him that he would eventually be as free as a sleet bird. Ka Suo's messenger hawk frequently delivered his inquiries about the mortal realm to Li Luo. General Ke Tuo advised Li Luo to always satisfy Ka Suo's requests, as he was the future Ice King. Li Luo, who found Ka Suo's frequent questions about mundane mortal life tiresome, often knew what he would ask next.

In one message, she explained that mortals with strong spiritual powers were chosen as realm guardians to prevent accidental harm by powerful gods and to avert a purgatory-like mortal realm. She anticipated Ka Suo's next question about whether a mortal's magic could defeat a god's.

She clarified that in a direct fight, a mortal had no chance, but mortals possessed a unique advantage: if a god was stained with mortal blood, they would temporarily lose their divine protection and magical ability. This loophole, a compromise between humans and gods, had been exploited by evil gods using mortals as shields. Ka Suo found this tactic cruel, and his messenger hawk was almost entirely eaten by Li Luo's pet.

Ka Suo, intrigued by Li Luo's ability to always know his thoughts and her reluctance to appear before him in person, vowed to secretly visit the realm guardian's camp one day to finally meet her. Meanwhile, Lan Shang discreetly went to Ka Suo's chambers but found Ying Kong Shi instead. Ying Kong Shi, noticing her interest in his brother, playfully teased her about her mermaid legs, which were weak outside water unless married to an outside tribe.

Realizing he was Ka Suo's younger brother, Lan Shang asked him to convey a message: she would be waiting for Ka Suo under the Eternity Tree in the Forest of Snow and Fog and would not leave until he arrived. Ying Kong Shi deduced that she truly liked his brother. Later, Xin Jue forcibly entered the Forest of Snow and Fog, killing two Ice Tribe guards and proceeding deeper with the Holy Fire Source, harboring sinister intentions.

Lan Shang arrived at the Eternity Tree, as promised, but was unexpectedly attacked by a flock of frenzied clear sky birds. Xin Jue appeared and "rescued" her from the birds, but then, captivated by her beauty, attempted to sexually assault her, tearing her clothes. He taunted her, suggesting the Mermaid Saint wouldn't harm her future son-in-law for the sake of reputation.

At that critical moment, Ka Suo, having been alerted by Ying Kong Shi that Lan Shang was waiting for him, arrived at the forest. He immediately noticed the abnormal behavior of the clear sky birds and, fearing for Lan Shang's safety, rushed to find her. He intervened just in time, saving Lan Shang from Xin Jue's clutches.
