At the Song-Liao border, a man in red intercepts a group of Liao soldiers, introducing himself as Su Mengzhen. When their leader orders an attack, Su Mengzhen effortlessly kills the soldiers and takes the leader's head, stating it was the one he came for. Su Mengzhen later meets Yang Wuxie, presenting the severed head. Yang Wuxie notes its small size, and Su Mengzhen explains that Liao soldiers shrink heads with limewater to claim rewards.
He vows to prevent the enemy from desecrating General Yang's body. A sudden coughing fit overcomes him, and Yang Wuxie provides him with medicine. An arrow arrives bearing a message, which Su Mengzhen catches. The letter reports the death of Xue Xishen. Suspecting that Hua Wucuo, the House's Incense Master, is plotting with Six Half Hall to seize control, Su Mengzhen decides to return to the Capital immediately, prepared to fight through their territories.
Meanwhile, Lei Chun of Six Half Hall learns that the girl with the box-carrier is Wen Rou of the Luoyang Wen family. She instructs her subordinates not to harm Wen Rou and plans to acquire the box through cunning. Anticipating the trio will travel by water, she arranges for an ambush at Qiuling Crossing. On their way to the crossing, Wang Xiaoshi, Bai Choufei, and Wen Rou decide the water route is safest.
Wen Rou shares her three principles for the martial world: not judging by origins, not sweating the small stuff, and absolute loyalty among allies. They arrive at the deserted Qiuling Crossing, but soon a large boat appears, accompanied by zither music. Wang Xiaoshi plays his flute in response, securing them passage. Onboard, Lei Chun, introducing herself as Tian Chun, quickly befriends Wen Rou, offering her a luxurious room and even inviting her to share her bed.
While fishing, Wang Xiaoshi expresses his desire to explore the world, starting with the Capital, while Bai Choufei is determined to stay and achieve fame, believing glory must be sought in the light. That night, within the eerie House of Sunset Drizzle, a terrified subordinate, pursued by Lu Jiansan, seeks help from Keeper Gu Dong. Hua Wucuo interrogates the man about Su Mengzhen's letters.
The subordinate reveals they were handled by Liu Lianxin while the House Master was ill, and under duress, discloses that Su Mengzhen's route is through Kushuipu. As the man turns to leave, Lu Jiansan kills him with an arrow. Elsewhere, the House Master, Su Zhemu, confronts Hua Wucuo. He reveals his knowledge of a secret from twenty-six years ago: that Hua Wucuo was among a group of Six Half Hall spies sent to infiltrate their house.
Su Zhemu explains he obtained a rubbing of the spy list, which included Hua Wucuo's name, but tolerated him for his contributions. He warns Hua Wucuo that the original list is in the white jade box—a salvation if he remains loyal, but a death warrant if he conspires. Su Zhemu asserts that while Hua Wucuo can enjoy a life of luxury, the position of House Master is forever beyond his reach, leaving Hua Wucuo shaken.
Back on the boat, the group enjoys a night of drinking, music, and dancing until they fall asleep. Lei Chun then seizes the white jade box. Her subordinate, Zhe Tianchou, reports that Six Half Hall plans to assassinate Su Mengzhen and then states his intent to kill Wang Xiaoshi and Bai Choufei. To stop him, Lei Chun pushes Zhe Tianchou overboard. Alone, she looks to the water and declares that she has avenged General Yang.
The next morning, the trio awakens to find Lei Chun gone, leaving only a note: "The path of the martial world is long. We will meet again." Fearing the dangers of Kushuipu, Wang Xiaoshi and Bai Choufei had already planned to drive Wen Rou away for her own safety. Bai Choufei deliberately provokes her, questioning her suitability for the martial world. Furious, Wen Rou storms off.
Bai Choufei admits to using a "tough" approach, while Wang Xiaoshi reveals his "gentle" one: having already booked a fine room and meal for her at the next town. As they leave, Wen Rou, having overheard them from a distance, mutters curses at "Stupid Rock" Wang Xiaoshi and "Shameless Gui Jianchou" Bai Choufei for their deception. Upon entering Kushuipu, the two men immediately see Su Mengzhen, sitting prominently in his red robes.
He states he is waiting there so the carrier of the box could easily find him. Yang Wuxie advises discretion, but Su Mengzhen dismisses the concern. Yang Wuxie warns that Kushuipu is a land of hidden masters, respected even by their House and Six Half Hall, and that they must proceed with caution.
