Love between Lines Episode 12 Recap
> Love between Lines Recaps
Pei Zhen investigates the timeline of Xiao Zhiyu’s move into the lane and realizes it perfectly aligns with the announcement of the Lyman design competition. Deducing that Xiao Zhiyu’s project is centered on lane culture, Pei Zhen decides to strike first. He organizes a press interview to "pre-heat" his own project, publicly claiming that his firm, Zhuling Group, is developing a hotel inspired by Shanghai’s traditional Shikumen (stone-gate) houses.
This news sends Xiao Zhiyu’s team into a panic, as they have already spent months refining similar details. His employees worry that even with superior data, Lyman will reject their proposal as a mere imitation of Zhuling’s publicized plan. Despite the mounting pressure at the office, Hu Xiu refuses to let Xiao Zhiyu descend into gloom.
She sends him a series of urgent text messages, first claiming the scallions in their garden have grown and then insisting he buy plant nutrients for their dying flowers. When he still doesn't return, she invents a story about an old lady whose hydrogen balloons drifted away and became stuck on their roof. Xiao Zhiyu eventually returns to find the attic filled with a vibrant sea of colorful balloons that Hu Xiu bought to cheer him up.
While they sit on the terrace sharing a pot of traditional soup, Hu Xiu talks about her childhood in the lane, describing the elegance of their neighbors and the sense of community that makes the area feel like a living legend. Her stories help Xiao Zhiyu realize that the true essence of the lanes is found in the warmth of the people, not just the architecture.
The next morning, Xiao Zhiyu is awakened by the sound of laughter and sees Hu Xiu distributing the remaining balloons to the local children. Inspired by this display of neighborhood connection, he revises his design to focus on the human element. At the competition, Pei Zhen presents a tech-heavy "floating community" concept featuring an AI-driven smart hub. In contrast, Xiao Zhiyu introduces his project for his firm, Dynamism, as a "flowing city of time."
He proposes using virtual reality technology to allow residents to immerse themselves in different historical eras of Shanghai, creating a bridge between collective memory and modern living. His emotional and innovative approach wins over the judges, and his firm secures the victory by a single vote. Although his team initially pranks him by pretending they lost, the group eventually celebrates their hard-earned success.
Meanwhile, Zhao Xiaorou attends a class reunion with her husband, Guangming, who is praised by his former classmates as a model husband and a former campus heartthrob. During the event, friends reveal that Guangming recently rejected a junior colleague named Chi Xin’s advances, further cementing his reputation for loyalty. However, after the party, Guangming admits to Xiaorou that his company is in trouble.
A client's funding has been cut, leaving his current project at risk of becoming an abandoned "rotten-tail" building. He promises her that he is working to secure a deal with a larger corporation to save the development. Following the competition, a resentful Pei Zhen goes to a winery to drown his sorrows and runs into Xiao Zhiyu. Pei Zhen warns his rival that the "game" has only just begun, but Xiao Zhiyu is preoccupied with his father’s past.
He has been gathering information and discovers that a former driver for a steel factory director managed to climb the social ladder after the director’s death. This man has since become a prominent building materials supplier with suspicious ties to the Zhuling Group. As Xiao Zhiyu digs deeper into these old connections, Pei Zhen’s father returns from abroad, berating his son for losing to Xiao Zhiyu and questioning if Pei Zhen is truly capable of leading the family business.
