Blossoms in Adversity Episode 32 Recap
> Blossoms in Adversity Recap
Shen Huan brought wine to visit Shen Qi, and through their conversation, gradually solidified his feelings. At the banquet the next day, in front of both families, Shen Huan declared that he not only frequented the Qunfang Courtyard, but also indulged in drinking and gambling. Finally, he even claimed to have flirted with his future mother-in-law, enraging the Jiang family. After returning home, Shen Huan was severely beaten by his father.
He didn’t resist, only clutched tightly the pawn piece carved by Shao Yao. Jiang Zhengzhi came to visit Shen Huan, and Shen Huan confessed that he had deliberately acted like a hopeless good-for-nothing because he had someone else in his heart. This way, the Jiang family wouldn't be embarrassed, and if the engagement was broken off, it would only reflect poorly on him.
Though he wasn’t certain he could be with the one he loved in the future, he didn’t want to go against his heart. Jiang Zhengzhi admired him and helped him escape the house to find Shao Yao. Shen Huan told Shao Yao that he no longer had to marry. Shao Yao was overjoyed and tearfully told him she had thought it through—Shen Huan was different from everyone else, and she too had feelings for him.
Hearing this, Shen Huan excitedly pulled Shao Yao into his arms. Jiang Zhengzhi got lost at the Hua residence and unexpectedly ran into Hua Rong. After the marriage alliance with the Jiang family fell through, Shen Huan's father went to visit the Chief of the Three Judicial Offices, but was turned away. Gu Yanxi and Hua Zhi went together to purchase tables and chairs for Zhiming Tower.
During the trip, Gu Yanxi took a liking to a carved bed and wanted to buy it as part of Hua Zhi’s dowry, but she refused. Jiang Zhengzhi visited the Hua family again under the pretense of checking on Shen Huan and invited Hua Rong out for ice treats. Hua Rong was very happy.
Upon learning that his parents would return to Jinyang, Jiang Zhengzhi spoke truthfully, and the Jiang family then sent betrothal gifts to the Hua family, intending to marry Hua Rong. The imperial examination results were announced—Shen Qi ranked second, and the Shen family was overjoyed. Zheng Zhi also took the exam and passed as a presented scholar, bringing great happiness to the Hua family as well.
Hua Zhi gave Shen Qi a flower-shaped gold hairpin, symbolizing added glory to an already splendid occasion, and personally pinned it on him. Gu Chengtao posed a question for the top three new scholars, asking their thoughts on Hua Yizheng. Shen Qi answered frankly that among all civil and military officials in court, in terms of loyalty and bravery, no one could compare to Lord Hua. He then knelt and pleaded with Emperor Qing to pardon Hua Yizheng.
Gu Chengtao asked Shen Qi to step closer and said to him, “You are nothing like Shen Zhongxing. ”Gu Yanxi handed over the register related to Prince Xian’s case to Gu Chengtao and pleaded on behalf of the Shen family. Gu Chengtao was very displeased and immediately issued a decree to confiscate the Shen family’s property, imprison the men, and sell the women and children into servitude. After Gu Yanxi left, Gu Chengtao summoned Hua Zhi to the palace.
Hua Zhi candidly admitted that she and Gu Yanxi were indeed in love. Gu Chengtao told her that as someone from the imperial family, one’s nature was unlike ordinary people’s—when faced with supreme power, there was nothing that couldn’t be sacrificed. He advised Hua Zhi to be more considerate of Gu Yanxi, so that he could act more decisively in his duties.
Hua Zhi asked why, as a criminal from the Hua family, the emperor wasn’t concerned about her staying by Gu Yanxi’s side. Gu Chengtao replied that she was an insignificant person. Hua Zhi retorted that the emperor’s word “insignificant,” when applied to others, could mean utter ruin. To the emperor, everyone else was insignificant. Gu Chengtao said that her presence would only harm Gu Yanxi.
The reason he trusted and promoted Gu Yanxi was because of his unwavering loyalty and impartiality. But today, Gu Yanxi had tried to shield the Shen family because of her, which greatly displeased him. Originally, the Shen family wouldn’t have faced confiscation, but it was precisely because of Gu Yanxi’s plea that this happened. He would not allow anyone to interfere with Gu Yanxi’s loyalty. Anyone who did so, in his eyes, was as worthless as grass.
As Hua Zhi was leaving the palace, she saw Gu Yanxi, wearing a mask and accompanied by a group of Seventh Guards, passing by. She followed them, only to discover they were going to confiscate the Shen family estate.
