When Hua Yizheng learned that Hua Zhi had arrived, he didn’t even bother to put on extra clothing and sat in the courtyard waiting until Hua Zhi came running into his arms. He was very happy that Hua Zhi had learned how to cry. When he asked about Lin Wan, Hua Zhi didn’t say anything, but Hua Yizheng immediately saw the hairpin that had belonged to Lin Wan on Hua Zhi’s head, and he understood everything at once.

Upon learning that everything at home was well, the Hua family brothers felt relieved. Hua Yizheng told Hua Zhi that since coming to the north, he had always questioned whether he had made the wrong choice—between country and family, ruler and kin, which should weigh more. Hua Zhi deeply agreed with Hua Yizheng’s decision and openly shared her wish to redeem him and bring him back.

Hua Yizheng said he was doing well with the children now and had started writing a new manuscript, but since Boyu was still young, he asked Hua Zhi to take Boyu back. When Hua Zhi went to find Boyu, he also refused to go. Upon hearing this, the third master of the Hua family, Hua Pingyan, took the initiative to tell Hua Zhi that he wanted to leave the north, but Hua Zhi did not agree.

Gu Yanxi revealed his identity as a commissioner to Wu Yong and demanded he confess to colluding with the enemy. Wu Yong swore to the heavens that he had absolutely no connection with spies from Zhao. Hua Zhi had a nightmare where Hua Yizheng vanished from behind her, and when she woke up, she found Gu Yanxi sitting at her bedside. Hua Zhi distributed the extra supplies she brought to the people of Sanbaicheng.

The constables were very grateful for the medicine bundles she had brought, and as a result, Hua Yizheng was exempted from this year’s forced labor. Hua Pingyang brought candied apricots to Hua Zhi and named his daughter Yuan’er. Hua Pingyang asked Hua Zhi about her feelings. Hua Zhi said their situations were vastly different, and they might not be able to stay together. While working, Hua Pingyang and two others were summoned to the general’s residence for questioning.

When Gu Yanxi learned that the visitor was Hua Zhi’s fourth uncle, he peeked out from behind the curtain to take a good look at Hua Pingyang. Although Gu Yanxi was wearing a mask, Hua Pingyang immediately realized that the man Hua Zhi had said was vastly different from her and might not be able to stay with her was actually the commissioner of the Qixiu Division.

After returning home, Hua Pingyang asked Hua Zhi, and she did not deny it. She sincerely told her fourth uncle that even if their identities would eventually separate them, she had never thought of retreating completely. Gu Yanxi, who had been outside the door, heard everything. After Hua Pingyang left, Gu Yanxi entered the room and hugged Hua Zhi tightly. Gu Yanxi asked Wu Yong for advice on how to propose to a young lady.

Wu Yong told him it depended on timing, location, and harmony between people, and explained each one. Gu Yanxi listened carefully. Despite investigating Zhao’s secret messages for quite some time, Wu Yong found no leads. Gu Yanxi analyzed that the secret letter might have been a diversion, possibly a trick to draw attention elsewhere. Hua Yizheng personally escorted Hua Zhi out of Sanbaicheng. Before parting, he placed a protective talisman in her hand.

Though he didn’t believe in spirits or gods, he still wanted Hua Zhi to keep it well. Outside the city, Hua Zhi reunited with Gu Yanxi. Gu Yanxi suspected that something might have happened in the capital. On their return journey, the assassins sensed something was wrong. After killing Niu Heng’s group, they disguised themselves and set an ambush near the valley, intercepting Hua Zhi and her group.

After Hua Zhi gave them money, the assassins allowed the women and children to leave while keeping the men behind. Just after Hua Zhi left, the assassins were ordered to kill. Gu Yanxi, being a skilled fighter, became their primary target, and they all attacked him at once. Fortunately, Chen Qing and Li Hou coordinated with each other.

After several rounds of fighting, the assassins suspected Gu Yanxi’s identity, and Gu Yanxi also realized that these people were after him specifically. The surviving escorts who escaped the valley urged Hua Zhi and the others to flee. Upon hearing that Gu Yanxi was in danger, Hua Zhi spurred her horse and rushed back at full speed.
