With Gu Hai now living at his house, he and Bai Luoyin have become inseparable companions. One day, while Gu Hai is on his bicycle, Bai Luoyin expresses a craving for sugar-coated haws. Gu Hai buys a single stick of the hawthorn variety, explaining he can't manage another while riding. They share the treat, with Bai Luoyin remarking on its sweetness and lack of pits while playfully trying to get more bites from Gu Hai.

Later at school, You Qi approaches Bai Luoyin for help with a difficult math problem he can't solve. As Bai Luoyin begins to explain, Gu Hai jealously intervenes, pushing You Qi aside and insisting on explaining it himself. He aggressively quizzes You Qi to ensure he understands, asserting that he hadn't grasped the concept initially. Afterwards, Gu Hai gives Bai Luoyin some animal blood pudding, telling him it’s healthy and helps "clear toxins from the blood vessels."

Meanwhile, Jiang Yuan, Gu Hai's stepmother and Bai Luoyin's biological mother, complains to Gu Hai's father, General Gu, that Gu Hai still refuses to come home and needs to be taught a lesson. General Gu offers to speak with his son to resolve their issues, despite Jiang Yuan's warning that Gu Hai will be hostile. Jiang Yuan then shifts her focus to Bai Luoyin, lamenting his difficult upbringing and suggesting he move in with them.

She even proposes giving him an empty apartment they own near Guomao Bridge if he prefers to live alone. General Gu objects, stating the apartment is reserved for Gu Hai, who would be furious if Bai Luoyin lived there. Dismissing this, Jiang Yuan believes Gu Hai has no intention of returning. Seeing his wife is at a loss with her son, General Gu offers to speak with Bai Luoyin himself.

Jiang Yuan warns him of Bai Luoyin's stubbornness, and the General assures her he knows how to handle it. Sometime later, Gu Hai asks Bai Luoyin where to find the cheapest clothes in Beijing, and Bai Luoyin directs him to the area near the zoo. Gu Hai asks Bai Luoyin to accompany him shopping the next day and teach him to bargain. At the market, Gu Hai demonstrates an aggressive bargaining style.

For a jacket priced at 39 yuan, he claims to be a wholesale buyer and insists on a price of 15 yuan, threatening to leave until the seller reluctantly agrees. He tries the same tactic for a jacket priced at 200 yuan, but the seller refuses, calling him crazy. General Gu meets with Bai Luoyin, introducing himself as his stepfather. Acknowledging that Bai Luoyin already rejected Jiang Yuan’s invitation, the General states his goal is to offer guidance.

He praises Bai Luoyin’s stubbornness, noting a similarity to his own son, Gu Hai, but adds that Gu Hai is rational when it comes to his own interests. General Gu asserts that a man shouldn’t be consumed by sentimentality and that by choosing to remain in his current environment, Bai Luoyin is engaging in a form of self-degradation.

He offers to provide a superior living situation, emphasizing it’s not charity but what Bai Luoyin deserves, and that refusing it would show immaturity, not strength of character. Bai Luoyin firmly replies that he never intended to take anything from Jiang Yuan, as he has never considered her his mother. As he tries to leave, General Gu stops him, but Bai Luoyin is unmoved, stating that he is already a talented person and will succeed without any shortcuts.

One evening, Gu Hai joins Bai Luoyin and his father, Bai Hanqi, for dinner. Gu Hai and Bai Hanqi share drinks, and Gu Hai later claims to be drunk, sprawling across Bai Luoyin’s bed. Unconvinced, Bai Luoyin accuses him of faking it. As they lie there, they discuss the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. Bai Luoyin shares that his family doesn't celebrate it much since his mother remarried, and it no longer feels like a family reunion.

When Gu Hai asks about his favorite mooncake, Bai Luoyin tells him it's egg-yolk lotus seed paste. At school, as Gu Hai is playfully hugging a reluctant Bai Luoyin from behind to warm his hands, a driver arrives looking for him. The driver, addressing Gu Hai as "young master," says General Gu sent him and that he cannot return empty-handed. When Gu Hai refuses to go to the car, Jiang Yuan appears.

She tries to persuade Gu Hai to return home, offering that she and his father would move out to let him have the house. She appeals to his emotional attachment to the home where his own mother had lived for many years. Gu Hai retorts that his return is none of her business. Frustrated, Jiang Yuan compares his stubbornness to her own son's. She offers him mooncakes she bought, but Gu Hai flatly refuses them.

Later, Gu Hai presents Bai Luoyin with an enormous mooncake, explaining he went to several shops to have a custom one made with twelve egg yolks. As they prepare to eat, Gu Hai admits he has been keeping a secret. Bai Luoyin surprises him by revealing he already knows Gu Hai's house is rented, as his grand-uncle and grand-aunt live next door. Bai Luoyin then directly asks if Gu Hai is about to confess that he's rich.

Amused, Gu Hai asks how he knew. Bai Luoyin calmly recounts seeing Gu Hai's driver pick him up at the beginning of the school year and noticing his limited-edition watch. A playful scuffle ensues. Gu Hai admits he was wrong to deceive him, but also accuses Bai Luoyin of "harboring a criminal" by not saying anything. Suggesting they call it even, he asks Bai Luoyin not to be angry or distant.

Bai Luoyin reassures him, saying he isn't easily angered and that his previous drunken rant was directed at Jiang Yuan's family, not born from a "hatred of the rich." When Gu Hai asks why he didn't bring it up sooner, Bai Luoyin replies that he was never given the chance.
