The Empress, Nanku Mingyi, brought a bowl of beef broth to Emperor Muyun Qin, demanding he declare he no longer missed Yinrong. Muyun Qin, however, refused to look at her or compromise, instead calling her a "jianren" (slut/bitch). He further stated that Muyun Sheng was his smartest son, far superior to Muyun Hegao. Enraged, the Empress slapped Muyun Qin several times and ordered his confinement in the Zangjian Pavilion, with all meals withheld until he agreed to forget Yinrong.

The impending struggle for the heir caused unrest. In the Muru family's ancestral temple, Muru Shuo, accompanied by his two sons, Hanshan and Hanchuan, instructed them to protect Muyun Sheng, assigning Yuxin Ji to his care. Hanshan informed Muru Shuo that he had found a secret technique master to investigate Nanku De's suspicious death, hoping to uncover the truth and clear the Muru family's name.

However, Muru Shuo sternly rebuked Hanshan for disregarding the Muru family's ancestral rule against using secret techniques. Despite Hanshan's reluctance to see the family suffer injustice, Muru Shuo remained firm, punishing Hanshan by making him kneel and recite the ancestral rule: "The moment you pick up the butcher's knife, you should know that one day you too will die by the knife." Muru Shuo stressed that the Muru family was in a precarious situation.

Meanwhile, Muyun De, following instructions from Mo Yuchen, sought to approach Muyun Sheng. He wandered Tianqi City, gathering information on Muyun Sheng's preferences, and used a gift of fine paper—described as either white paper or Xuan paper—to gain an audience. Muyun De presented Muyun Sheng with a math problem, which Muyun Sheng, finding Muyun De interesting, accepted. The problem was a riddle: which is heavier, a rock or a feather (though one account mentioned cotton instead of feather).

As Muyun Sheng pondered the riddle in a bamboo pavilion, a graceful woman, Pan Xi, either in green or white attire, suddenly appeared. Startled, Muyun Sheng observed her read the question aloud, and she expressed surprise that he could see and hear her. Muyun Sheng recognized her as the woman he had previously seen within his Muyun Magic Orb. Pan Xi then vanished.

Immediately after, Lan Yu'er rushed in to report that the orb was missing, but Muyun Sheng discovered it on the floor where Pan Xi had disappeared, leaving him stunned by the inexplicable events. Later, at the Jiuzhou Inn, Muyun Sheng met with Muyun De and Mo Yuchen. Muyun Sheng admitted his inability to solve the problem, revealing that Pan Xi had given him the question.

Muyun De disclosed his identity and intentions, which made Muyun Sheng recall Mu Ruhanjiang, his first friend. Muyun Sheng then showed the Muyun Magic Orb to Muyun De, who also claimed to see the woman's back within it. Mo Yuchen, who had either been secretly listening or entered unexpectedly, then revealed himself.

Muyun Sheng felt a sense of familiarity with Mo Yuchen and recalled fragmented memories of either a "flower sea night" or a "scary event" from four years ago, though he could not fully remember the details. Mo Yuchen took the orb, examined it, and also claimed to see the woman. He attempted to manipulate Muyun Sheng, suggesting that by learning secret techniques, Muyun Sheng could see Pan Xi again and have her as a constant companion.

However, Muyun Sheng reacted strongly against the idea of secret techniques, asserting they only harm people. He took back his orb and left, refusing to learn them. After Muyun Sheng's departure, Mo Yuchen admitted to Muyun De that he had not actually seen the woman, speculating that only those with the Muyun bloodline could perceive her. Muyun De subsequently tried to poison Mo Yuchen with "black feather poison" in his tea, intending to control him and extract the orb's secrets.

Despite initial pain, Mo Yuchen managed to delay by warning Muyun De that the woman in the orb was a key to obtaining "tianxia" (the world/empire). After his poison self-resolved, Mo Yuchen turned the tables, using the same "black feather poison" to warn Muyun De against further tricks. He clarified that while he nominally served Muyun Luan, he was not Muyun Luan's subordinate, and demanded Muyun De's cooperation.

They eventually agreed to an alliance for a "grand enterprise," promising not to harm each other, but the woman in the orb was to belong to Muyun De. The next day, Muyun Sheng went to the palace to pay respects to the Emperor and Empress. Muyun Qin, having been starved for a day and a night, appeared emaciated and undignified. In front of Muyun Sheng, the Empress again tempted Muyun Qin with beef broth.

Exhausted and weak, Muyun Qin finally succumbed, stating he no longer missed Yinrong. Hearing her desired words, the Empress laughed or coldly smiled, boasting of her victory and sneering that Yinrong's profound love was ultimately worth less than a bowl of beef broth. Muyun Sheng then visited the Star-Gazing Pavilion (also known as Xingming Ge). He observed the complex and regular star-tracks, realizing his main star was Yufui Star, symbolizing conflict, fanaticism, and ambition.

He expressed disbelief in star-destiny, stating that the fate of Kyushu could not rest solely on him, and wished to heal Muyun Qin. Ling Heqing stopped him from touching the star-tracks and explained that secret technique injuries could only be cured by secret techniques. He added that secret techniques were either a refined method of deduction or an innate spiritual power, and not a natural ability.

Ling Heqing also warned that despite Muyun Sheng being a half-spirit, he could not help, as palace-wide searches for secret technique masters had yielded no one capable of curing Muyun Qin, and even if he could heal Muyun Qin, it would not alter star-destiny.
