The Emperor Tiansheng approved Ning Yi's suggestion. He posed a question, asking each prince to write a character on paper, with the theme being "the foundation of human existence." Daughters of officials also wrote a character, and each official's daughter randomly chose a character written by a prince; if they matched, it meant their hearts were in sync. Hua Gongmei drew Ning Yi's character. But upon opening it, there was no character on Ning Yi's paper.

Consort Chang and Shaoning seized the opportunity to claim that Ning Yi was humiliating Emperor Tiansheng. Feng Zhiwei suddenly coughed, making a sound. Then she stood up and said Ning Yi's solution was brilliant, and Ning Ji also agreed. As Feng Zhiwei was about to leave, Consort Chang suddenly wanted to betroth Feng Zhiwei to Ning Yi. Ning Yi had to say she had an unusual appearance to avoid this trouble.

Afterwards, Yao Yangci also came out to draw, and naturally drew Prince Yan. Yao Yangci was exceptionally talented and flattered Emperor Tiansheng with the character 'love' written by Prince Yan. Prince Yan seized the opportunity to ask Emperor Tiansheng to fulfill their union, but Yao Yangci requested Emperor Tiansheng to allow her to choose another card. Consort Chang immediately became displeased. Yao Yangci only said that choosing again wouldn't change anything; she was just curious.

Yao Yangci received Emperor Tiansheng's permission and drew another card, which also had the character 'love' on it. This fraudulent act made Emperor Tiansheng very displeased. Consort Chang could only say that perhaps another prince had also written the character 'love', and then looked at Ning Qi, her eyes full of menace. Ning Qi, helpless, had to say that he had also written the character 'love'.

Yao Yangci originally did not want to fall into Consort Chang's trap, so this move conveniently pushed away the marriage. Zhao Yuan immediately stepped in to mediate, asking the princes to present their congratulatory gifts. Outside the hall, Madam Wang looked at the congratulatory gift carried by the maid, feeling extremely uneasy, wanting to persuade Ning Qi not to take risks.

Ning Qi refused, saying that if they didn't do this, where else in this vast imperial palace would there be a place for him and his mother to stay? Ning Yi also instructed Feng Zhiwei outside the hall that if the sound of a woman crying was heard inside the main hall, she should start playing. Ning Yi presented a Minhai Tongbao coin, which Duke Min had privately minted. Consort Chang's people immediately panicked.

Emperor Tiansheng was displeased and ordered Zhao Yuan to put it away carefully. The birthday gift presented by Madam Wang and Ning Qi, when uncovered, turned out to be the Golden Coffer. Ning Qi claimed this was not the congratulatory gift Madam Wang had prepared. The maid immediately knelt down, saying it might have been taken by mistake. Madam Wang and Ning Qi cooperated, pushing away responsibility for the Golden Coffer incident.

Consort Chang was relentless, believing that the mother and son had forged the Golden Coffer. Ning Qi merely said that his and Madam Wang's loyalty to Emperor Tiansheng had never changed, a statement identical to what he had said when he met Emperor Tiansheng earlier that day.

Emperor Tiansheng knew his thoughts, but Prince Yan failed to see Ning Qi's deliberate act, claiming that Ning Qi wanted to seize the throne and usurp power, attempting to have Emperor Tiansheng punish him. Madam Wang panicked, crying and shouting that she had done nothing. At this moment, Ning Yi spoke, "Madam Wang, have you truly done nothing?" Madam Wang's face changed drastically. She knew Ning Yi was referring to the death of Consort Yan eighteen years ago.

She was about to speak but was interrupted by Ning Qi. Ning Yi pressed her repeatedly. Madam Wang completely broke down, but outside the hall, Feng Zhiwei's ethereal zither music suddenly echoed. Madam Wang calmed down, but in a brief moment, she was driven mad by the guilt in her heart, exclaiming that "she" had returned, and then revealed the truth from eighteen years ago: it was she who, at Consort Chang's instigation, framed Consort Yan and poisoned her!

Emperor Tiansheng immediately fainted at his desk, and everyone panicked. Shaoning burst into Emperor Tiansheng's bedchamber, saw him gravely ill, knelt beside him, and then withdrew after crying. After Shaoning left, Emperor Tiansheng sat up, showing no signs of illness. Eighteen years ago, Consort Yan, to ensure Ning Yi's safety, transfused blood to both father and son. In a fit of rage, Emperor Tiansheng picked up a bow and strangled Consort Yan with the string.

With his young son and a major upheaval in his household, Emperor Tiansheng's heart was filled with mixed emotions. Ning Yi shared a similar fate with Emperor Tiansheng as father and son, naturally knowing that he was not truly gravely ill. When he came to visit Emperor Tiansheng, Emperor Tiansheng childishly complained about the bitter medicine and said he was tired of feigning illness, wanting to pull Ning Yi to play chess.

Ning Yi simply said he had something to do and left first. Prince Yan sent for Imperial Physician Zhang, and after coercion and inducements, he made him serve his purpose and had him obtain Emperor Tiansheng's medical records. The next day, Prince Yan and Shaoning were in a carriage heading to Qingming Academy. Shaoning's purpose in going there was to get close to Feng Zhiwei and find out whose name was truly inside the Golden Coffer.

Feng Zhiwei dreamt that she had become a prisoner, and as the executioner's blade fell, she suddenly woke up. The Yan Clan leader sent a letter, requesting the court to issue an imperial decree for transportation. Prince Yan brought Shaoning to Qingming Academy, using Shaoning's naughtiness as an excuse to have Feng Zhiwei discipline her. When Feng Zhiwei knelt to greet them, she claimed her leg ailment had flared up. Prince Yan then took Shaoning to settle in first.

Feng Zhiwei said, "The visitors mean no good." Ning Yi felt disheartened by Emperor Tiansheng's calculations regarding their father-son relationship. He suddenly remembered Feng Zhiwei once asking him why he always schemed against her. Ning Yi had originally thought he wouldn't scheme against Feng Zhiwei, but now it seemed the Ning family's bloodline was predisposed to such. Xin Ziyan saw his expression and repeatedly exclaimed that Ning Yi had developed true feelings for Feng Zhiwei.
