Xu Xian arrived at the Drunken Immortal Pavilion where a murder had occurred. Constable Li Gongfu had sealed the premises, vowing no one would leave until the killer was found, leading to unrest among the innocent patrons. Xu Xian, concerned for his brother-in-law, proposed a method to identify the murderer. He suggested a "ghost test."

Li Gongfu would announce that a Guangong statue had enchanted an incense burner, and anyone guilty of the murder who put their hand inside would find it turning black. After an innocent person's hand became sooty and black from the burner, the suspect, Kexin, initially claimed her hands were clean and she was innocent.

However, Li Gongfu revealed his true method of identification: the innocent would confidently put their hands into the sooty burner, while the guilty, fearing exposure, would only pretend to, thus keeping their hands clean. Kexin's clean hands, therefore, indicated her guilt. Just as Li Gongfu ordered her arrest, Magistrate Liang Jun arrived.

Captivated by Kexin's feigned distress and beauty, and holding a grudge against Li Gongfu for past cases that he believed hindered his promotion, Liang Jun immediately ordered her release, dismissing Li Gongfu's method as a "trick." He proclaimed that Kexin's delicate hands couldn't possibly be those of a murderer. At the Jishi Clinic, Xu Xian was distracted, his thoughts elsewhere. Ruyi, wanting to prove her competence, offered to help.

However, she accidentally dispensed the wrong type of dark dates, using wild persimmon dates instead of red dates, which caused a patient's condition to worsen when taken on an empty stomach. Xu Xian gently chided her, explaining the serious consequences of such errors in medicine and advising her to rest at home, even trying his usual tactic of offering beautiful clothes to persuade her to leave.

Ruyi, frustrated and feeling compared to Bai Suzhen, admitted she had told Bai Suzhen about her and Xu Xian's supposed "relationship," claiming it was to stop Bai Suzhen from "daydreaming." This revelation made Xu Xian realize that Bai Suzhen's recent coldness was due to this misunderstanding. Ignoring Ruyi's pleas, he rushed out to find Bai Suzhen to explain. Xu Xian arrived at the Bai Mansion, but found the door closed.

Xiao Qing emerged, taunting him and asserting that Bai Suzhen was with her cousin, Jing Song, and was perfectly safe. She advised Xu Xian to spend time with Ruyi instead. Despite the taunts and the closed door, Xu Xian remained, determined to speak with Bai Suzhen and clarify the misunderstanding, waiting from morning until night like a resolute pine. As a heavy rain began, Bai Suzhen, touched by his persistence, almost went out but was stopped by Jing Song.

He warned her about the fleeting nature of human life and love, contrasting it with the enduring pain a demon would feel. He urged her to be decisive and let go to avoid further heartbreak. Bai Suzhen, with a heavy heart, only gave Xu Xian an umbrella through the crack of the door, advising him to return home in the cold, rainy weather.

Distraught and overwhelmed by anxiety and anger from standing in the rain, Xu Xian fainted on his way home and was found and brought back by the night watcher. Waking up in bed, still unwell, Xu Xian's first thought was of the umbrella and his desire to convey his feelings to Bai Suzhen. He began to repair the old lantern and make new sky lanterns, carefully inscribing them with poetry.

The lanterns, carrying his heartfelt message, floated over the Bai Mansion. Xiao Qing, seeing Bai Suzhen release her own flower lanterns and write a wish for "longevity" for people, noted the irony, remarking that only demons truly know long-lasting love. She then saw Xu Xian's sky lanterns and the poem, realizing he was inviting Bai Suzhen to West Lake the next morning.

Jing Song, aware of the lanterns' message and Bai Suzhen's conflicted emotions, informed her that their boat to Sichuan was ready, and they would depart tomorrow. Bai Suzhen, though hesitant, only asked to say goodbye to Xiao Qing, Xu Jiaorong, and her neighbors in Quyuan Alley. Jing Song agreed to accompany her to Xu's house for farewells before their departure. Meanwhile, Li Gongfu continued to track Kexin, convinced she would eventually reveal her true nature.

Kexin, noticing his pursuit, decided he was an obstacle and attempted to attack him. However, Fahai suddenly appeared just as Kexin was about to strike Li Gongfu. Fahai warned Li Gongfu that he bore the strong scent of a fox demon, explaining that demons mark their prey to easily find them, similar to how the centipede demon used sachets on children. Though skeptical, Li Gongfu recalled Fahai's previous accurate warnings.

Fahai then presented Li Gongfu with the Demon Subduing Sword, which was sensitive to demon energy and could glow and even act independently to defeat demons. Moments later, as Kexin moved to strike Li Gongfu, the sword flew out, injuring her and forcing her to retreat, confirming Fahai's words. At the Jishi Clinic, Ruyi pressed her father, Master Jin, to propose to Xu Xian.

Despite Master Jin's disdain for Xu Xian's humble background, he was swayed by Ruyi's emotional appeals, especially her insistence on avoiding a cruel mother-in-law by marrying Xu Xian as a live-in son-in-law. He reluctantly agreed to propose that very day, selecting several valuable items as betrothal gifts. Shortly after Xu Jiaorong left home to search for Xu Xian, Bai Suzhen and Jing Song arrived at the Xu residence to bid their farewells. Li Gongfu was left to host.

Unexpectedly, Master Jin and Ruyi then arrived with the betrothal gifts, proclaiming their intention to arrange a marriage between Ruyi and Xu Xian. Li Gongfu, caught off guard, was further confused when Master Jin secretly whispered that it was merely a "show" to humor Ruyi, and the gifts would eventually be taken back. Witnessing this scene, Bai Suzhen, already vulnerable from Ruyi's earlier words, believed the "engagement" was real.

Heartbroken, she and Jing Song quickly departed, losing all hope of reconciliation. Soon after, Xu Jiaorong returned with Xu Xian, having encountered Xiao Qing, who was idle on the road, and brought her along. Li Gongfu, still perplexed by the day's events, explained the "fake" proposal to them. Xiao Qing, furious at the realization that Jing Song had manipulated Bai Suzhen into leaving Lin'an, stormed out, intent on stopping her sister.

Xu Xian, clutching the umbrella Bai Suzhen had given him, immediately followed, determined not to let this last chance slip away. At West Lake, Bai Suzhen and Jing Song were on a boat preparing to depart for Sichuan. Bai Suzhen looked back repeatedly, longing for someone, hoping for a sign.

Xiao Qing arrived on the shore, angrily called out to Bai Suzhen for leaving without telling her and for being misled by Jing Song, and then jumped onto the boat, declaring she would accompany them to Emei and never leave Bai Suzhen again. Bai Suzhen, lost in her own thoughts, paid little attention to Xiao Qing's antics. As the boat began to pull away, Xu Xian appeared on the distant shore, calling out her name.
