The Legend of White Snake Episode 6 Recap
> The Legend of White Snake Recap
Jing Song, aware of Bai Suzhen's stubborn nature, did not dare to speak of their relationship too intimately. Instead, he referred to her as his sister, yet every word he spoke was directed at Xu Xian, clearly treating him as an outsider.
When Xu Xian presented the banquet invitation, Jing Song used his perceived status to demand participation, stating that Suzhen had seldom come out and that her deceased aunt and uncle had entrusted her care to him, making him responsible for her at all times. Xu Xian graciously welcomed them both to his house. As Xu Xian prepared to leave, a sudden downpour began.
Bai Suzhen wished to see him off, but Jing Song firmly stopped her, reminding her of her delicate health. Instead, Bai Suzhen had Xiao Qing fetch an umbrella and handed it to Xu Xian, watching his retreating figure disappear into the distance. The next day, Ruyi was already preparing for the banquet. Believing it would elevate her status, she instructed her maid, Yinxiang, to retrieve a precious thousand-year-old reishi from her father's collection as a gift.
Meanwhile, Bai Suzhen also prepared for the feast, asking Xiao Qing to help her choose a dress. Xiao Qing enthusiastically offered her expertise in fashion, but Jing Song, dismissive of her taste, urged Bai Suzhen to choose for herself. Unimpressed by either's suggestions, Bai Suzhen decided to wear an elegant gown. To her annoyance, Ruyi arrived wearing an identical dress. At the Xu family entrance, Ruyi attempted to block Bai Suzhen, claiming it was a private family banquet.
Xiao Qing quickly retorted, mocking Ruyi's presumptuousness and then proudly displayed their invitation, implying Xu Xian had personally delivered it, which sent Ruyi storming inside. Inside, Ruyi tried to appear helpful by having Yinxiang assist Xu Jiaorong, Xu Xian's sister, with serving soup. However, Yinxiang fumbled, nearly spilling the hot broth. Bai Suzhen deftly caught the bowl, preventing a mishap.
Ruyi, instead of showing gratitude, sneered at Bai Suzhen, calling her a "boor who loves to fight" despite her refined appearance. Xiao Qing immediately defended Bai Suzhen, proudly declaring her the daughter of the Commander of Mid-Sichuan, a woman "no inferior to men," unlike "delicate girls" who couldn't even hold a bowl steady.
Xu Xian interjected, introducing Ruyi as his junior apprentice from Jishi Clinic and emphasizing that Bai Suzhen was a revered guest who had assisted him on multiple occasions. Ruyi, trying to regain the upper hand, presented her costly reishi, subtly chiding Bai Suzhen for arriving empty-handed. Realizing the social custom, Bai Suzhen used her powers to magically produce a meticulously organized medical book, which Xiao Qing presented.
Xu Xian was overjoyed, proclaiming it the most precious gift he had received that day and marveling at Bai Suzhen's generosity and wisdom. As they prepared to dine, Li Gongfu, Xu Xian's brother-in-law and the chief constable, joined them. Upon seeing Bai Suzhen, he recognized her as the "fairy" who had aided him during the centipede demon case.
Bai Suzhen, however, calmly denied it, stating she had arrived too late that day and he must have mistaken her for someone else. Xiao Qing quickly jumped in, attributing the confusion to Bai Suzhen's extraordinary beauty, which often led people to believe she was a celestial being. During the meal, Ruyi continued her thinly veiled barbs, criticizing Xiao Qing for sitting at the table with her mistress.
Bai Suzhen explained that Xiao Qing was like a sister to her and always dined at her side. Ruyi retorted that Bai Suzhen, despite claiming to be a lady, lacked proper decorum. Li Gongfu, noticing the rising tension, tried to lighten the mood with a toast, acknowledging the recent troubles in Lin'an. Following Xiao Qing's earlier advice to "fit in" by drinking heartily and reciting poems, Bai Suzhen began to toast everyone with eloquent verses, much to Ruyi's visible annoyance.
Jing Song, having overheard Xiao Qing's rustic advice, chastised her for teaching Bai Suzhen "rough men's drinking games." Bai Suzhen confessed it felt a bit strange to recite poems while drinking, but she continued to do so. Seeking to create an opportunity for Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen to spend time alone, Xu Jiaorong discreetly suggested that Bai Suzhen help Xu Xian air out his extensive collection of books, including some rare copies, in the good weather.
Ruyi eagerly offered her assistance, but Xu Jiaorong cleverly diverted her to mundane housework, while Xiao Qing physically restrained Jing Song from interfering, allowing Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen to proceed to the study. In Xu Xian's study, Bai Suzhen was captivated by the numerous books. Xu Xian enjoyed the quiet moment of her company. She discovered a copy of "Lei Gong's Review on Drugs and Pharmacy," a medical text she had long sought.
As Xu Xian explained how he had acquired the book, he accidentally touched her hand, causing a brief moment of awkwardness before he withdrew. Bai Suzhen then spotted a familiar mended lantern in a corner of the room – the very one from the Lantern Festival. Xu Xian admitted he had found it broken in the street after the festival, repaired it, and cherished it because her riddle had made that year's festival uniquely special.
He confessed that it was the first time he had met a "real competitor" and a "confidante," implying his growing feelings for her. Their intimate moment was abruptly interrupted when Ruyi, feigning a sudden stomachache, burst into the room. She sent Xu Xian away, claiming it was a "girl's illness" that only Bai Suzhen could examine. While Bai Suzhen was attending to Ruyi, Yinxiang, at Ruyi's subtle instruction, loudly announced that Ruyi and Xu Xian had a long-standing engagement.
She added that Xu Xian's kindness towards Bai Suzhen, an orphan with no parents, was merely out of pity and that Bai Suzhen should not "think too much" of it. Naive and soft-hearted, Bai Suzhen believed their words. Heartbroken and feeling misunderstood, she abruptly left the Xu house, telling Jing Song and Xiao Qing not to follow. Xu Xian was left bewildered by her sudden departure. Concerned by Bai Suzhen's forlorn expression, Jing Song secretly followed her.
Xiao Qing, attempting to follow discreetly, transformed using her magic, but her demonic energy was sensed by Fahai, who appeared and captured her. Bai Suzhen, distraught, asked Jing Song if mortals truly were so forgetful, if loved ones could be easily replaced, and if deep emotions simply faded into past memories. Jing Song seized the opportunity to reiterate the principle of "humans and demons having different paths."
He explained that while demons lived for millennia, mortals lived short lives, constantly undergoing reincarnations. What demons cherished as enduring memories were for mortals merely "things have changed, but people are gone," and such relationships only led to suffering, which he believed was Guanyin's true lesson. Convinced by the combined weight of Ruyi's deceit and Jing Song's words, and deeply heartbroken, Bai Suzhen agreed to return to Mount Emei with him.
However, she requested to travel slowly, taking time to enjoy the mortal scenery one last time, which Jing Song readily promised to arrange. Meanwhile, at the Drunken Immortal restaurant, Li Gongfu and his constables were celebrating. They learned about a new "best" courtesan named Kexin, renowned for her qin music and dancing. Unbeknownst to them, Kexin was a fox demon who preyed on the hearts of immoral and weak-willed men.
An inebriated Mr. Wang tried to accost Kexin, but Li Gongfu, ever righteous, intervened. Kexin then attempted to entice Li Gongfu into her private room, but he, being "afraid of his wife" and concerned about returning home smelling of perfume, politely declined, advising her to report any further harassment to the authorities. Frustrated by Li Gongfu's resistance, Kexin returned to Mr. Wang and, in a horrifying display of her true nature, drained his heart, leaving him a dried husk.
The discovery of Mr. Wang's body, with no external wounds but his heart missing, caused panic. Li Gongfu, determined to find the killer, ordered the restaurant sealed, declaring that no one would leave until the murderer was apprehended. The trapped guests, convinced it was a vengeful spirit, grew agitated and demanded release. At home, Xu Jiaorong worried when Li Gongfu did not return. Xu Xian, believing his brother-in-law might be drunk, offered to check on him.
Outside the restaurant, a constable informed Xu Xian of the murder and the widespread fear of "vengeful spirits," explaining Li Gongfu's lockdown. Hearing this, Xu Xian indicated he might have a solution if it were indeed vengeful spirits.
