The Best of You in My Mind Episode 2 Recap
> The Best of You in My Mind Recap
A young Lin Xichi said goodbye to her dog, Fang Fang, after giving him a dog tag, telling him she would always find him and to take good care of her brother. Her younger brother, Lin Xi Geng, questioned why she was leaving without saying goodbye to Brother Fang. Lin Xichi simply said she had nothing to say to him at that moment.
Years later, Lin Xichi finally arrived at Rong University, thrilled to pursue her desired major and live in the same city as her mother. On her first day, she sought directions to the female dorms, receiving help from a passing male student.
She then tried to rescue a cat named Mimi stuck in a tree, but a student named Ye Shao Wen advised her that her presence was scaring the cat and suggested leaving food and water while the crowd dispersed. He explained that trust takes time with animals. After successfully helping the cat descend, Ye Shao Wen introduced himself as a student in the veterinary medicine department.
Lin Xichi, who also chose the same major because of her love for animals, introduced herself and mentioned her parents worked in Rong City. Lin Xichi’s mother helped her settle into the dorm, meticulously arranging her belongings and warning her against catching a cold. Lin Xichi, however, found her mother's actions disruptive and messy. Holding a "lucky tea" packet, Lin Xichi secretly wished for no strange roommates.
Soon after, two other girls, Nie Yue and Xin Zi Dan, entered the dorm. Nie Yue, lively and outspoken, immediately declared herself the "big sister" of the dorm, being born on January 1st, and promised to look after both Lin Xichi and Xin Zi Dan. Lin Xichi shared that she was from Luo City, to which Xin Zi Dan excitedly revealed she was also from Luo City, suggesting they could travel home together for holidays.
Later, Lin Xichi, in a fit of pique, refused her father's offer of a bank card and instead secretly took a significant sum of money from Lin Xi Geng’s savings, leaving him a note about an emergency and promising to repay him double. Lin Xi Geng, discovering his "ultimate equipment" money gone, angrily called Lin Xichi, who, in turn, criticized him for not accepting their father's card and urged him to focus on his upcoming college entrance exam.
At the Veterinary Medicine orientation, the dean welcomed the new students, and senior Ye Shao Wen delivered a speech, offering his WeChat contact for any academic or life-related questions. Nie Yue and Xin Zi Dan were impressed by Ye Shao Wen's handsome and amiable demeanor, noting his reputation as the previous year's "Mr. Popular." Lin Xichi, however, found him "too gentle," preferring a "cooler" type.
Afterward, the trio ventured out for food, with Lin Xichi offering to treat them to Dairy Queen. While out, Lin Xichi confidently tried to win a prize at an archery stall for a young boy, claiming to be a seasoned archer. After several misses, Xu Fang unexpectedly appeared, guiding her hand to hit the target. His friend, Jiang Zheng Xu, expressed surprise upon seeing Lin Xichi, remarking that she wasn't as "scary" as Xu Fang had described.
Lin Xichi, recognizing Xu Fang without his glasses, learned he’d had eye surgery and was now wearing contact lenses. She couldn't believe he was the same "Fang Fang" she knew, especially after he revealed he was now a special admission to Rong University's archery team. The two childhood acquaintances bantered, acknowledging their "fated" reunion. Xu Fang jokingly invited Lin Xichi to an expensive meal, reminding her of a past promise, but Lin Xichi, now short on cash, declared herself "poor."
Over hotpot, Xu Fang teased her about her "poor smell," while Lin Xichi retaliated by reminding him of his "short, dark-skinned, skinny, and four-eyed nerd" past. She then challenged him to an arm-wrestling match, betting a month's worth of pocket money. Xu Fang deceptively let go of her hand before the countdown was complete, winning the match. When Lin Xichi claimed she didn't have her wallet, Xu Fang took her phone, easily guessing her password, and found only 800 yuan.
He calculated her debt to be 1,200 yuan, based on her monthly allowance, and declared himself her "creditor," demanding labor as repayment. Back in the dorm, Nie Yue and Xin Zi Dan questioned Lin Xichi about Xu Fang and Jiang Zheng Xu. Lin Xichi revealed Xu Fang was her childhood neighbor but referred to him as a "swamp" and an "enemy forever," lamenting her 20 yuan balance. Nie Yue wondered if Xu Fang's bullying behavior was a sign of affection.
The next morning, Nie Yue reminded Lin Xichi and Xin Zi Dan about the critical class selection, specifically warning against "Teacher Yan," whom a senior had dubbed a "devil" for frequently failing students. Despite Lin Xichi's early efforts, her computer experienced a blue screen, forcing her to select Yan Zhi Bin's class. She voiced her frustration about being stuck in his class and not wanting to be with Xu Fang.
Later, Xin Zi Dan informed Lin Xichi that she also got Yan Zhi Bin's English class and suggested they attend together, offering her "lucky tea." Lin Xichi openly shared her dire financial situation, which left her constantly hungry. Her friends offered her food, and she confided in them, asking them not to tell her parents, as she just needed to survive the month. She vowed to never speak to Xu Fang again, while Nie Yue continued to promise daily buns.
During a campus tour, Lin Xichi's mother visited, bringing many of her favorite snacks. Lin Xichi showed her a photo of her parents' seventh wedding anniversary. Lin Xichi asked if she could have lunch at her mom’s place and spend weekends with her, complaining about Xu Fang's "exploitation." Her mother, however, explained that living in hospital dorms made it inconvenient. She then asked if Xu Fang was indeed the boy who lived next door to them in the past.
Lin Xichi attempted to discuss a past misunderstanding involving "black stockings," but her mother quickly dismissed the topic, assuring her it was in the past and urging her to focus on her studies and health. Before leaving, her mother promised to visit whenever she had time. Excited by the visit, Lin Xichi called Lin Xi Geng to share the news about their mom.
However, Lin Xi Geng responded coldly to the mention of their mother and quickly hung up, though he immediately reverted to a cheerful demeanor. He then brushed off his studies, scoffing at a classmate's question about a geometry problem, mockingly suggesting that getting it right would mean winning the lottery, and boasted about his own indifference to his grades before mock exams began.
