Our Dazzling Days Episode 12 Recap
> Our Dazzling Days Recaps
Early one morning, Zhang Xiaoman left a letter for Ding Guoqiang and boarded a train to Shanghai alone. Having spent his entire life within the confines of the East Chemical Plant, he was eager to see the world beyond the wall calendars he had admired for years. Upon arriving at Tongzhou University, Xiaoman felt lost in the sprawling campus until an architecture student directed him to Building No. 2.
There, he spotted Yan Xiaodan from a distance, deeply immersed in a project with her classmates. Seeing her so focused and professional made him feel a sudden, painful sense of distance. A classmate eventually noticed him, and Xiaodan rushed over for an emotional embrace. They decided to keep his arrival a secret from Xia Lei to surprise him later that evening.
On the school track at dusk, Xiaoman hid, hoping to startle his friend, but Xia Lei appeared carrying a birthday cake instead. It turned out the two had planned a belated eighteenth birthday and coming-of-age celebration for him. Surrounded by the three candles representing their bond, Xiaoman wished for them to stay together forever. After the cake, Xia Lei tactfully left the couple alone.
As they walked, Xiaoman jokingly compared their circular path to a donkey at a millstone, but Xiaodan noted that a track has no finish line—meaning they could walk together indefinitely. Under the city lights, Xiaoman gathered his courage and kissed her on the cheek. The next day, Xiaodan planned to take him to see the oak and kapok trees mentioned in a famous poem, but they were intercepted by her father, Yan Wenyuan.
During lunch at the school cafeteria, Yan Wenyuan provided a bowl of longevity noodles for Xiaoman but used the meal to deliver a reality check. He explained that he had moved the family to Shanghai specifically to give Xiaodan a future far removed from the chemical plant. Realizing the truth in these words, Xiaoman told Xiaodan that he didn't want just a few days with her; he wanted a "forever."
He decided to return to Tiexi early to begin building a life that could sustain their future together. Back home, Xiaoman mentioned moving to Shanghai to find work, but Uncle Ding strongly disagreed. He argued that manual labor on a construction site wasn't a sustainable path and insisted Xiaoman learn a proper trade like welding. Despite Xiaoman's concerns about missing enrollment and lacking exam scores, Uncle Ding promised to find a way.
Meanwhile, in Shanghai, Xiaodan's friend Meng Ge expressed concern that Xiaodan’s growing ambitions and curiosity about the world might eventually clash with Xiaoman’s simpler outlook on life. Ding Guoqiang and his wife soon visited Director Liu at the plant to ask for help with Xiaoman’s education. When Liu claimed the technical school was no longer under his jurisdiction, a heated argument ensued, with Uncle Ding blaming the plant's poor security for the incident that led to Xiaoman's past legal troubles.
To settle the matter, Liu suggested contacting Principal Jin Changfu, an old acquaintance who now ran the school. Uncle Ding invited Jin over for drinks, leveraging an old story of how he had once saved Jin’s hands during a fight with thieves. The plan was set: Xiaoman would audit classes as a guest student and then skip a grade after passing the exams the following year. Xiaoman soon began training in the welding workshop.
His instructor, Mr. Teng, began the first lesson with grim safety warnings, detailing fatal accidents to ensure the students respected the dangers of the trade. In class, Xiaoman reunited with his old friend Dongdong, who happily revealed he was now dating Sun Lulu, thanks to a letter Xiaoman had written for him years ago. In Shanghai, Xiaodan’s horizons continued to expand as her professor, Chen Guoqing, showed photos of European architecture, fueling her desire to see the world.
Xia Lei attended a Northeast hometown association gathering, hoping to connect with fellow provincials. The event was a mix of personalities, including the blunt Guan Shengnan and a finance student named Fan Weijie. However, the mood soured when Fan Weijie, who was trying to sell "boss belts" and phone pouches to the group, was publicly exposed for previously selling fake leather shoes to other students. As the confrontation grew awkward, Xia Lei felt out of place and left early. Fan Weijie followed him out, dropping his salesman persona to admit he was simply trying to survive the expensive city by running a small business.
