The Emperor summoned Bu Meng to discuss Chen Yuanxi's marriage. Bu Meng worried that it would be difficult to find a suitable match for Chen Yuanxi given her personality. The Emperor then thought that Bu Meng's own older brother, Bu Yue, was also unmarried, and left laughing. Bu Meng felt uneasy. Chen Yuanxi arrived at Bu Meng's residence.
Bu Meng was exceptionally joyful to reunite with her long-lost childhood friend and introduced her to her good friends Concubine Qu, Noble Lady Xiao, and Consort Yan. The friends happily helped Chen Yuanxi change into female attire. Soon after, Bu Meng took her to meet the blind date candidates. Bu Meng's brother, Bu Yue, arrived as scheduled. Carrying the Emperor's instructions, Bu Meng returned home. Upon entering, she was startled to suddenly find the Emperor already at her house, which made her legs go weak. The Emperor told Bu Meng that his secret visit was to personally help matchmake Bu Yue and Chen Yuanxi. In front of the Emperor, Bu Yue still did not admit his feelings for Chen Yuanxi.
The next day, Bu Yue was lingering near Chen Yuanxi's guard post when he saw a handsome man named Xu Fang chatting with her. Driven by jealousy, Bu Yue reported Chen Yuanxi to her general for dereliction of duty. The general punished Chen Yuanxi for chatting during her guard duty by assigning her two months of cleaning latrines. Chen Yuanxi knew this was all Bu Yue's idea and was furious, so she confronted him, and they started fighting again.
Soon after, Bu Yue overheard Xu Fang planning to propose to Chen Yuanxi, and he started to feel uncomfortable. Chen Yuanxi timidly came to tell Bu Meng that Xu Fang had proposed and her father had already accepted the betrothal gifts. Bu Meng quickly used this information to subtly probe her brother's feelings. Bu Yue became uneasy and finally couldn't hold back. That night, he ambushed Chen Yuanxi outside her home.
He showed her a secret impeachment memorial that Xu Fang had previously filed against her, which had led to her demotion. Chen Yuanxi finally saw Xu Fang's true colors, silently took the memorial from him, and walked away without a word. The next morning, during court, the Emperor was preparing to select a great general to quell border disturbances, and Chen Yuanxi confidently volunteered herself.
Many ministers objected, seeing her as merely a woman and worrying she could not handle such a great responsibility. Chen Yuanxi immediately made a military pledge in public. The Emperor, however, remained silent, giving no immediate decision. Later, as Bu Meng was being carried in her palanquin, she saw Chen Yuanxi chasing Bu Yue with a sword, demanding he recommend her to the Emperor for the war. Bu Meng intervened, pulling Chen Yuanxi aside.
She told Chen Yuanxi that even if she agreed, her father would never agree to her going to war, as he was over fifty and had only this one precious daughter. Chen Yuanxi, however, was unconcerned, believing that this expedition was a great opportunity to bring glory to her ancestors and that she absolutely could not give it up.
