As the new semester began, the final exam results were released. Despite Xia Rui's immense effort, her ranking dropped by thirty places, severely impacting her confidence. The school also required students to fill out college application forms on the very first day. Zhao Yishu, with her art exam prospects, and Cheng Erluo, with his sports specialty, both set their sights on Binhai University. Nan Xi's excellent grades also made it a straightforward choice for him.
However, for Xia Rui, gaining admission to the same university seemed an insurmountable challenge, creating significant anxiety about being separated from her closest friends or holding them back from their dreams. Overwhelmed, Xia Rui sought relaxation at Yi's cafe. Finding Boss Yi absent, she confidently took charge, making coffee based on her observations. Liu Bin, a senior who had to repeat a year due to flunking, was also working there part-time.
He watched Xia Rui with interest, seemingly finding a kindred spirit in her due to their shared academic struggles. Liu Bin's carefree attitude provided Xia Rui a temporary reprieve. Seeing her downcast, he good-naturedly goaded her into abandoning her stressful studies for a round of arcade games. Though he didn't interrupt, his resolve to help Xia Rui focus on her studies intensified, as he desperately wished to attend the same university as her. However, the more Nan Xi pressured her, the more Xia Rui wanted to evade him. Zhao Yishu, noticing Xia Rui's distress, feigned a craving for Grandma Xia's dumplings and accompanied her in skipping self-study. During their time together, Xia Rui confessed her deep anxiety about the future.
She revealed that Nan Xi's high expectations were making her feel suffocated, as she couldn't bear the thought of one day being separated from her friends. Stumped on how to help Xia Rui, Nan Xi sought out Cheng Erluo. He even resorted to causing a disturbance in class, deliberately getting himself and Cheng Erluo punished to stand outside, just to have a chance to discuss strategies. Nan Xi's increasing confidence and a more open, approachable demeanor were becoming evident.
Cheng Erluo advised Nan Xi that Xia Rui couldn't be controlled and needed to be willing, even sharing a "secret weapon" on how to "chase and coax girls." Later, Nan Xi, Zhao Yishu, and Cheng Erluo discussed Xia Rui's situation, realizing she felt more understood by Liu Bin due to their similar academic struggles. They concluded that the constant talk of Binhai University was highlighting the academic gap and increasing her pressure.
They resolved to support her without adding more burden. Later, Mr. Hu organized a tripartite meeting with students and their parents to discuss college applications. Nan Xi's mother, President Ren, arrived, expressing her hope that Nan Xi would attend Binhai University, particularly its architecture department, a prestigious program well-suited to his interest in wood art.
Mr. Hu acknowledged Nan Xi's strong foundation but pointed out his fluctuating grades, attributing it to a past period of academic inactivity, which worried him given the pressures of the college entrance exam. However, when Nan Xi was asked about his own preference, he blurted out that he only wanted to be with Xia Rui, surprising his mother and leaving Mr. Hu at a loss.
Nan Xi rushed out of the office and saw Xia Rui, lost in thought, letting water overflow while filling her cup. In his concern, Nan Xi accidentally scalded his hand. This sight enraged President Ren, who, without understanding the situation, pushed Xia Rui's hand away and angrily accused her. Just then, President Shao, Xia Rui's mother, walked by and would not tolerate her daughter being blamed. She fiercely defended Xia Rui, leaving President Ren speechless.
It was revealed that President Ren's overprotective behavior stemmed from her guilt over not having enough time to accompany Nan Xi, which she believed contributed to his social anxiety, making her excessively anxious about his every move. After the heated exchange, President Shao and Xia Rui accompanied Mr. Hu to the office for their meeting. Xia Rui unhesitatingly stated her ambition to attend Binhai University.
However, President Shao dismissed her daughter's dream as unrealistic and, ignoring Xia Rui's wishes, reiterated her plans to send Xia Rui to study abroad, despite Xia Rui's poor English and vehement refusal. This unilateral decision-making once again brought the meeting to an abrupt and unhappy end. Back at the cafe, Xia Rui, Nan Xi, Zhao Yishu, and Cheng Erluo brainstormed alternative paths for Xia Rui.
The idea of an art exam came up, but Xia Rui felt she had no artistic talents like singing or drawing. Nan Xi then shrewdly suggested broadcasting and hosting. This idea instantly ignited Xia Rui's confidence. She playfully practiced, mimicking a news anchor, much to the delight of her friends, who praised her natural talent and charisma.
They reassured her that unlike other art forms, broadcasting could be cultivated with high school training, making it a viable option for college admission. On the way home, President Ren secretly followed Nan Xi, observing him as he smiled and laughed freely with Xia Rui. She felt a mix of nostalgia and envy, realizing it had been years since Nan Xi had opened up to her or smiled with such uninhibited joy in her presence.
Later, Nan Xi apologized to Xia Rui for the pressure he had put on her. Xia Rui, in turn, acknowledged her fault for keeping her feelings to herself and for sometimes evading self-study or playing games. They agreed to support each other, and Xia Rui promised to tell Nan Xi everything and study diligently, aiming to attend college with him.
They discussed a new study plan that would integrate the art exam preparation, a prospect that Nan Xi initially suggested might cut into her rest time, causing a momentary playful disagreement before they found a way forward together.
