Returning to the Heavenly Palace, Jiuchen was filled with profound emotions; though fifty thousand years had passed, the war at Dark Capital Mountain felt as recent as yesterday. As he pondered, Lingxi, bursting with excitement, chattered away, thrilled to be by her idol's side, out of Peach Forest, and free from her father's strictures. Jiuchen, seemingly ignoring her, proceeded to his sleeping chamber. At the entrance to Fuyun Hall, Jiuchen paused.
Lingxi eagerly stepped forward to open the door, but it swung open on its own to reveal Shisan, a vividly dressed figure. Shisan was ecstatic to see Jiuchen, who hesitated, not recognizing the person. Shisan then explained that he was formerly known as Shishan, but fifty thousand years of galactic change had brought about some "slight alterations." Shisan asserted that he had always believed Jiuchen would return and had kept watch over the hall day and night.
Despite fifty thousand years having passed and many familiar faces gone, Fuyun Hall appeared untouched. Shisan noted that even the Dawn-Dusk Tree in the courtyard had ceased its growth and vital breath, as if all things had been awaiting Jiuchen's return. Jiuchen informed Shisan that his primary purpose for returning was recuperation.
He instructed Shisan to refuse unnecessary visitors and to ensure that Lingxi, whom he described as merely a naughty junior immortal from the lower realm, was properly taught the rules now that she was a maidservant in Fuyun Hall. Lingxi's cheerful demeanor instantly crumbled upon hearing this. Le Bo and Qingyao arrived, concerned for Lingxi. Le Bo, though sharp-tongued, harbored deep worries.
He gave Lingxi a spiritual stone necklace, stressing its immense importance and insisting she keep it on her at all times. Lingxi reluctantly accepted. Once they departed, Lingxi celebrated the start of her new life, but Shisan quickly dampened her spirits. Shisan explained that while the Nine Heavens were vast, they were also bound by countless rules. Despite Jiuchen being the third most important figure after the Heavenly Emperor and the Heavenly Supreme Lord, their status as maidservants was negligible.
As they conversed, High Immortal Yunfeng arrived with Kaiyang and Hanzhang, two of Jiuchen's former guards, and several other officials, to pay their respects. Kaiyang and Hanzhang were overjoyed at Jiuchen's return, stating that after the great battle between gods and demons at Dark Capital Mountain, peace had prevailed across the four seas, and they had been assigned military duties in the Heavenly Palace. Jiuchen inquired about his former comrades and their families.
They reported that Yuanzheng's position was now held by his younger sister, Yuan Tong, who had gained high standing in the military. They also informed him that Zhuxie's entire tribe had perished in the war, leaving no descendants. Hearing this, the already silent Jiuchen grew even more withdrawn.
Yunfeng, curious about how Jiuchen, whose immortal soul had been severely damaged and vitality lost, could suddenly awaken, was then told by Jiuchen that Lingxi had trespassed into the Immortal Sea and woken him. Jiuchen confessed his greater fear: if Lingxi could awaken him, could she also awaken the sealed Demon Tribe, or even the Demon Lord himself? This was why he kept her close.
Afterward, Kaiyang and Hanzhang recounted the events that transpired since Jiuchen's disappearance after the Dark Capital Mountain war. Later, when they were alone, Yunfeng questioned Jiuchen about keeping the "little danbird" by his side. Jiuchen stated that Lingxi's exact manner of entering the Immortal Sea was less important than the fact that this "unremarkable" little danbird had awakened him.
He reasoned that if she could awaken him, then the sealed demon beasts could also be in danger, and Lingxi's identity was indeed suspicious. Learning from Yunfeng that the Heavenly Supreme Lord had been in seclusion since Jiuchen's presumed death, Jiuchen felt a surge of guilt. The God of Heavenly Thunder had been despondent since his deity-conferring ceremony was interrupted.
His attendants, Ziguang and Fangsheng, commiserated with him, expressing outrage that the Heavenly Emperor had not even mentioned the matter, despite it being a pre-arranged event. Though the God of Heavenly Thunder outwardly rebuked them for their insolence, he harbored deep resentment.
Ziguang lamented that while Jiuchen was valiant in battle, it was the God of Heavenly Thunder who had shouldered the burden fifty thousand years ago, pacifying various tribes and aiding the wounded, and had since managed the Heavenly Race meticulously. The God of Heavenly Thunder, deeming Ziguang's words too presumptuous, chastised him, asserting that even if Jiuchen had erred, it was not his place to comment.
Fangsheng swiftly changed the subject, suggesting that Jiuchen's awakening was highly unusual, especially coinciding with the Heaven-Devouring Beast's escape. He implied that Lingxi, the junior immortal who trespassed into the Immortal Sea and was suspiciously close to the Heaven-Devouring Beast, must be a Demon Tribe remnant. The God of Heavenly Thunder fully agreed with Fangsheng, especially considering Lingxi was merely a junior immortal.
He immediately ordered Fangsheng to seize Lingxi and personally interrogated her on the Purple Cloud Platform with severe torture. Lingxi vehemently denied any wrongdoing, but the God of Heavenly Thunder refused to believe her. Just as he instructed Ziguang to continue whipping her, Jiuchen appeared, demanding if the God of Heavenly Thunder intended to defy the Heavenly Emperor's orders. Silenced, the God of Heavenly Thunder could only watch as Jiuchen took Lingxi away.
Qingyao arrived to treat Jiuchen, and seeing Lingxi injured, she applied medicine to her as well. Lingxi inquired about Jiuchen's injuries and, learning that he had further depleted his vitality to save her, felt a deep sense of guilt. Mustering her courage, she went into Jiuchen's inner hall to thank him. However, as she stepped inside, the Kunwu Sword suddenly appeared, pointing directly at her.
Jiuchen asked why she did not evade it, and Lingxi bravely stated that despite her fear, she trusted he would not harm her. Jiuchen then demanded the Lifelong Knot she had taken from him that day. Lingxi playfully claimed she might have lost it, but Jiuchen instantly saw through her lie, giving her ten days to retrieve it, or else he would send her back to the God of Heavenly Thunder.
After Lingxi left, Jiuchen instructed Shisan to keep Lingxi under close surveillance and report her every move. Lingxi, annoyed by Jiuchen's insistence on getting the knot back, stubbornly decided not to return it. At that moment, Shisan entered and instructed Lingxi to immediately move into her room. Lingxi firmly refused, citing the impropriety of men and women sharing quarters, having mistakenly assumed Shisan was male based on Jiuchen calling her "Shishan" (her previous male name as a merman soldier).
Shisan then explained that "Shishan" was her former male name, but now she was Shisan, and then moved into Lingxi's room instead. Shisan kept a vigilant eye on Lingxi all day, even through the night. In the middle of the night, Lingxi was awakened by Shisan's snoring. She attempted to use a spell to seal Shisan's mouth but was almost injured by Shisan's protective trident.
The day's events—being inexplicably whipped by the God of Heavenly Thunder, and then being monitored despite saving Jiuchen—left Lingxi feeling deeply wronged and upset. As her sense of injustice grew, Lingxi decided to leave. However, she found a layer of frost had formed in the main hall corridor. Following the ice, she arrived at Jiuchen's inner hall, discovering the entire room was frozen. Jiuchen, like the day in the Immortal Sea, was completely covered in ice, unable to consume medicine.
In a moment of urgency, Lingxi desperately used her inner power to expel the cold from Jiuchen. As Jiuchen gradually thawed, Lingxi, exhausted, collapsed powerlessly into his arms. Outside, a voice, seemingly that of the Demon Lord, echoed, questioning Jiuchen's past act of personally slaying one hundred thousand Heavenly Soldiers, asking how such an action differed from that of a demon. Lingxi, feeling confined and watched by her father at home and now by Jiuchen, wondered if there was any place for her in the vast Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses.
