Light Beyond the Reed Episode 15 Recap
> Light Beyond the Reed Recap
Late at night, Zhao Shuhui waited for Fan Jiancheng to return home, only to discover he had gambled away Wenwen's education fund. Unable to tolerate his behavior, she confronted him. Fan Jiancheng, feeling entitled, asserted that her family's prosperity was due to him and that she had no right to question him. He then slapped her. Dropping his pretense, Fan Jiancheng pinned Zhao Shuhui down. She threatened him with evidence she possessed, but he scoffed, believing she wouldn't report him.
He argued that if he were arrested, she would become his accomplice, and Wenwen would lose both parents, a terrifying prospect. He even dared her to keep the video of his wrongdoings, saying he wouldn't mind if she watched it. The next morning, Zhao Shuhui bore a bruise on her face, but for Wenwen's sake, she pretended as if nothing had happened. Fan Jiancheng feigned concern for his wife, even peeling a shrimp and insistently placing it in her bowl.
Zhao Shuhui, repulsed by his hypocrisy, initially gave the shrimp to Wenwen, but Fan Jiancheng forcefully returned it to her plate. Meanwhile, Ye Sibei and Qin Nan finally moved out of their old residence. Qin Nan understood Ye Sibei's need for personal space and quietly remained by her side. At the hospital, Zhao Chuchu discreetly inquired about Huang Guifen's condition, learning she was stable and in recovery.
Zhao Chuchu then asked a nurse to deliver a fruit basket to Huang Guifen's room, declining to enter herself due to an urgent matter. Later, Nianwen brought Huang Guifen some clothes and a toy that Ye Sibei used to play with as a child, hoping the blowing motion would stimulate her muscles, although Ye Sibei cautioned him not to overdo it due to her mother's condition.
Ye Sibei diligently helped her mother with rehabilitation exercises, encouraging her to put effort into her right foot and teasing her not to be lazy, promising water after she completed her steps. Huang Guifen eventually recovered enough to be discharged. As they prepared to leave, Ye Sibei told Qin Nan she wanted to visit Yang Qiyu, her high school Chinese teacher.
She explained that he had helped her secure a 20,000-yuan donation during her senior year, allowing her to continue her studies. She expressed a desire to thank the anonymous donor someday, but felt she had nothing to offer at present. Qin Nan vowed they would thank the donor together once he earned more money.
When Qin Nan then listed his own tasks, including tidying his shop and fixing his father's drainpipe, Ye Sibei interrupted, reminding him to focus on his own life, not just hers. She felt his constant sacrifice made her a burden. Qin Nan, feigning misunderstanding, dismissed her concerns, saying that as husband and wife, they should face hardships together, not abandon each other. He then attributed his state to lack of sleep and left.
Later, while Ye Sibei slept, Qin Nan secretly examined her notes, which detailed Fan Jiancheng's daily movements, routes, and even proposed escape plans, causing him silent distress. Earlier, Ye Sibei instructed someone to purchase two tickets for an upcoming Wednesday and arrange to meet at a specific location at that time, hinting at a clandestine operation. Later, she informed Qin Nan that she had already acquired tickets for a trip to Guangzhou (a provincial capital) on a Wednesday.
Qin Nan, aware of Ye Sibei's true intentions, feigned being busy when she asked about his schedule. Ye Sibei took Qin Nan to visit Mr. Yang. The teacher gave Qin Nan a meaningful look, as if harboring a secret, and advised Ye Sibei to cherish Qin Nan and not let him down, emphasizing that the past doesn't matter, but the future is worth contemplating. After their visit, Qin Nan accompanied Ye Sibei to their old high school.
He recalled his younger self and Ye Sibei's former brilliance. As they looked at old class photos, Ye Sibei pointed out her old classroom and seat, reminiscing about her top student days. She also spoke about the flag-raising platform where she once gave a speech titled "The Best Is Always in the Future," proclaiming that no suffering or despair is insurmountable.
Qin Nan subtly tried to dissuade Ye Sibei from her plan to go to the provincial capital by reminding her that Wednesday was his lunar birthday. However, Ye Sibei remained resolute, unwilling to waste the purchased tickets, but offered to celebrate with him at noon with a big cake. Fan Jiancheng, having tasted success at the gambling venue, continued to gamble there daily. Qin Nan, secretly following Ye Sibei, discovered she was carrying tools like knives and hammers.
When she wasn't looking, he discreetly disposed of them in the sea, hoping to prevent her from committing a grave mistake. Qin Nan repeatedly tried to persuade Ye Sibei to let go of her plans, but she seemed to have lost faith in the law and was determined to seek justice herself. Despite the underlying tension, Qin Nan pretended to be happy on his birthday.
They visited the graves of his deceased family members, where he solemnly introduced Ye Sibei as his wife and beloved. He spoke of her being his only family left and how she made him feel less alone, like he had a home. He then made a wish over a cake Ye Sibei brought, but became too emotional to eat it immediately.
He tearfully thanked her for celebrating his birthday with him after so many years, and she promised to celebrate with him every year from then on. Both of them knew their time together was limited, and they cherished these precious moments. Later, Captain Zhang paid a private visit to Huang Guifen to check on her. While there, he noticed an old class photo and discovered that Qin Nan and Ye Sibei were middle school classmates.
He observed that Qin Nan's gaze in the photo had always been fixed on Ye Sibei, suggesting a deeper reason for Qin Nan's unwavering support. Nianwen explained that he was packing up his sister's belongings because Ye Sibei and Qin Nan were moving to the provincial capital.
