Jiang Yuelou informed Chen Yuzhi that the assassin had fired from the rooftop of the Broadway Building. Upon hearing this, Chen Yuzhi recalled his hurried journey toward Jing An Hotel after hearing the gunshots. He remembered bumping into a man carrying a cello downstairs at Broadway. The man was in such a rush that he barely acknowledged the collision before quickly leaving. Reflecting on it now, Chen Yuzhi found the man highly suspicious.

Though he couldn't recall a clear facial description, he estimated the man to be between 175 and 180 centimeters tall, slender, and in his twenties. Jiang Yuelou immediately instructed Song Rong to investigate based on these clues. Meanwhile, Cheng Qing was told by an assistant that someone was looking for Chu Ran. Chu Ran left, but Cheng Qing lingered, looking at a wall filled with photos, none showing faces.

He then picked up an undeveloped photo and walked out, only to be apprehended by Jiang Yuelou and his team who were waiting at the door. Jiang Yuelou questioned Cheng Qing, suggesting he was an insider who knew the travel schedule and destination, and had set up a fake call to make Song Rong the sole witness. Cheng Qing refused to confess and attempted to resist before being quickly subdued and taken to jail.

On the way to his cell, Cheng Qing suddenly seized a guard's gun and tragically took his own life. Zhan Junbai contacted Mrs. Jiang, discussing the recent failed operation and cautioning her against future mistakes. He questioned the progress of their plans in Beiping, assuring her that there was progress. As they spoke, Yutangchun arrived to deliver a medicinal tea prescribed by Chen Yuzhi, which was meant to help with Zhan Junbai's sleep.

Yutangchun overheard the conversation and attempted to discreetly leave, claiming he hadn't heard anything clearly. Still, Zhan Junbai felt uneasy and ordered his subordinates to conduct a more thorough investigation into Yutangchun. Upon Commissioner Bai's return home, Mrs. Bai secretly accessed his briefcase and reviewed his official documents. The following day, Mrs. Bai relayed this information to Mrs. Jiang. Commissioner Bai entrusted Jiang Yuelou with the responsibility of preparing a new arsenal.

He explained that the Military Commission had made a temporary decision to establish an arsenal due to increasing unrest from rebels in the south, who were now nearing Jing City. He instructed Jiang Yuelou to ensure all incoming ammunition was promptly stored in the Dahua Warehouse, emphasizing the importance of this task. Later, Yutangchun visited Chen Yuzhi at Yuzhi Hall. He revealed that he had been dismissed by Tianyunyuan and was now staying at Zhan Junbai's residence.

Chen Yuzhi inquired about Yutangchun's health, specifically his persistent coughing and coughing up blood in the mornings, and then performed a pulse diagnosis. Chen Yuzhi regretfully informed Yutangchun that he had waited too long, and his condition had deteriorated to the point where he likely wouldn't survive the winter. Yutangchun calmly expressed his dislike for the cold winter and his determination to endure until spring.

He then requested Chen Yuzhi to bury him in the apricot forest on the east side of the city. Yutangchun also asked Chen Yuzhi if he knew of any medicine that could induce a quiet, painless death, as he did not wish to face the ugliness of his final moments. Chen Yuzhi admitted he didn't possess such a strictly controlled government drug but suggested that Missionary Hospital might have it, and that Zhan Junbai's influence could easily procure it.

However, Yutangchun insisted he didn't want Zhan Junbai to know, wishing for a quiet and private end. He then requested Chen Yuzhi to bury a favorite costume belonging to Zining with him after his death. Jiang Yuelou led his men to the Dahua Warehouse to oversee the preparations, making sure all windows were removed and replaced with solid concrete. Unbeknownst to them, Mrs. Jiang had already dispatched her people to set an ambush inside the warehouse.

During the inspection, Jiang Yuelou was ambushed and wounded. Song Rong quickly provided covering fire, killing the assailant and telling Jiang Yuelou to escape through a window and contact the police bureau. However, Song Rong was then shot and killed by Mrs. Jiang herself, who appeared from behind. Dazed and close to unconsciousness from a head injury, Jiang Yuelou saw Mrs. Jiang approaching him, mistaking her for his own mother.

As Mrs. Jiang raised her gun to finish him, she noticed a distinctive birthmark on his back, realizing he was indeed her son, Kang Sheng'an, his childhood name being An'er. She lowered her weapon. Soon after, Commissioner Bai arrived with his men, shot Mrs. Jiang, and arrested her, taking her back to the police bureau. Jiang Yuelou was rushed to Yuzhi Hall for urgent medical treatment.

Zhan Junbai's subordinate reported the incident to him, stating that Jiang Yuelou was severely injured and his condition was unstable, while Mrs. Jiang was also shot and her fate unknown. Zhan Junbai mused that the "battle between mother and son" was a "wonderful scene," revealing his satisfaction with his design to make them fight each other.

He then ordered his subordinate to quickly ascertain whether Mrs. Jiang was still alive, stating that her death would simplify matters, while her survival would be a significant nuisance because she might expose him. He revealed that Mrs. Jiang had traveled to Jing City to assassinate Jiang Yuelou, her other son, in exchange for Zhan Junbai's promise to secure the release of her son from Beiping Prison.

At the police bureau, Commissioner Bai interrogated Mrs. Jiang about the mastermind behind the assassination attempts. She claimed sole responsibility, but Commissioner Bai countered that his investigation showed she lacked the influence in Jing City to arrange a mole within the police bureau or to be connected with Zhao Jingming. He surmised that she and Zhao Jingming were merely pawns in someone else's larger game.

Just then, an officer entered to report on Jiang Yuelou's condition, prompting Mrs. Jiang to impulsively blurt out Jiang Yuelou's childhood name, "An'er." Noticing her familiarity with "An'er" and "Kang Sheng'an," Commissioner Bai began to recount how he first met Kang Sheng'an when he was sixteen years old, saving him from a ruthless debt collector who was brutally demanding repayment for his deceased father's small debt, amplified by years of compound interest.
