Gu Qingqiao woke from a dream where she was undergoing rigorous training with her parents, feeling the warmth of their encouragement and concern for her safety. Upon waking in her current reality, she felt a pang of sadness, wondering who would take care of simple tasks like changing her mother's gas bottle back home. Meanwhile, Duan Yu expressed frustration that the Right Guardian who attacked Gu Qingqiao at the Gu residence had escaped.
He noted that the Right Guardian's ability to move freely within Qingfeng Restaurant suggested he was a formidable opponent. Xing Si reported that Gu Qingqiao had woken up and was unharmed, though frightened. Duan Yu then instructed Xing Si to take several dozen Wuyi Guards to the Gu residence to protect Gu Qingqiao, citing concerns about the Mantra Sect remnants. At the Gu residence, Gu Qingqiao was delighted by the large contingent of Wuyi Guards sent to protect her.
She spoke with Xing Si, inquiring about the relationship between Duan Yu and Magistrate Du's daughter, Ruoyun. Xing Si stated he didn't know much but assured Gu Qingqiao that Young Master Duan's heart belonged only to her. Pleased, Gu Qingqiao instructed her maid Dongxi to give Xing Si a silver VIP card for Qingfeng Restaurant.
She mused to herself about the unexpected complexity of her situation, acknowledging she needed to take things seriously now and hoped her father was looking after her mother. Shortly after, Ruoyun arrived at the Gu residence with Shaoyi to thank Gu Qingqiao for saving her life at the food festival. Shaoyi had heard that Gu Qingqiao was eager to marry his uncle, Duan Yu, and was curious to meet her.
Gu Qingqiao was stunned to learn that this Shaoyi was the same Shaoyi from her modern life and also happened to be Duan Yu's nephew. As they talked, Ruoyun recounted growing up with Duan Yu and Xing Si, explaining that as they got older, Duan Yu became more distant and only treated her as a sister. Shaoyi and Ruoyun agreed that Duan Yu was a "jerk" for not appreciating Ruoyun.
Gu Qingqiao clarified that Duan Yu had never proposed marriage to her; her father, Gu Xingwu, was the one arranging everything. Gu Qingqiao and Ruoyun found they liked each other's straightforward personalities and agreed to call each other "Qiao" and "Ruoyun," while Shaoyi nicknamed Gu Qingqiao "Qingliu" due to her unique personality. Gu Qingqiao also commented that she could distinguish between being protected and being monitored by the Wuyi Guards constantly following her.
Later, Gu Qingqiao prepared to have her Eight Characters read with Duan Yu. She asked Duan Yu to dismiss the Wuyi Guards, which he did, agreeing to accompany her himself. They visited Auntie Xu, who specialized in Eight Characters. Auntie Xu was visibly distressed and attempted to return their Eight Characters, claiming her spiritual power was insufficient and that dealing with them had brought her nothing but bad luck, severely injuring her leg.
She explained that their Eight Characters were "out of this world" and combining them would bring disaster, while separating would be even worse, potentially harming others. She described Gu Qingqiao as having an "early death" sign and Duan Yu as a "God of Slaughter." Duan Yu dismissed the talk of gods and ghosts, stating the reading was merely a formality. Gu Qingqiao, however, pressed Auntie Xu for a solution, threatening to visit daily if she didn't provide one.
Auntie Xu reluctantly suggested they try the spiritual Acacia Tree on the east side of the city, but warned the outcome depended on fate. Following Auntie Xu's advice, Gu Qingqiao and Duan Yu went to the ancient Acacia Tree. They observed the numerous wish ribbons tied to the branches. Gu Qingqiao used her hairpin to carve a wish onto her Eight Characters tag.
She then decided to bury both her and Duan Yu's tags in a box at the base of the tree, believing it would protect the wishes better than hanging them. With Dongxi's help, she buried the box. Feeling lighthearted after this, Gu Qingqiao suggested they fly paper kites. They began competing playfully, but Duan Yu used a stone to cut Gu Qingqiao's kite string, sending her kite soaring away.
As she tried to help him with his kite, which was proving difficult to control in the strong wind, Gu Qingqiao accidentally fell from the cliff edge. Duan Yu immediately leaped after her and caught her, saving her from the fall. That night, during a thunderstorm, Xing Si was seen digging up the box Gu Qingqiao had buried at the Acacia Tree, muttering nervously about the weather and blaming Duan Yu for making him do it.
He brought the box to Duan Yu, asking if he had retrieved it to confirm if Gu Qingqiao was the "Star of Rebellion" and intended to use the tree's power against the Duan family. Duan Yu denied this, stating he was merely curious about Gu Qingqiao's wish. He opened the tag and read it, revealing her wish was "Have a baby soon," causing him considerable awkwardness. He quickly re-sealed the box and instructed Xing Si to immediately rebury it.
Later, Xing Si delivered a new paper kite to the Gu residence, identical to the one Gu Qingqiao had lost. Gu Qingqiao was happy to receive it. She then asked Xing Si to go to the kitchen and get some pastries from the cook Da to take back for Duan Yu.
