Hong Zhengbao arrived at the police station to confront Xu Ruian about the recent assassination attempt on Luo Fusheng, demanding a thorough investigation. Xu Ruian readily agreed to look into the matter, promising to find the killer who dared to cause trouble for the Hong family on his territory. However, Xu Ruian then subtly broached the topic of the arranged marriage between his son, Xu Xingcheng, and Hong Lan.

He expressed doubts about the couple's willingness, suggesting that young people nowadays prefer freedom in marriage, and implied a desire to reconsider the engagement, influenced by the Hong family's perceived declining influence. Hong Zhengbao, discerning Xu Ruian's intent to call off the engagement and fearing his daughter's potential abandonment by the Xu family, immediately devised a counterplan. He instructed Luo Fusheng to eliminate Tianying to prevent any future complications for the Hong family.

Hong Zhengbao asserted that Lin Daoshan was the true mastermind behind Luo Fusheng's assassination attempt, as only Lin Daoshan would wish Luo Fusheng dead, especially given Tianying is the daughter of Luo Fusheng's father's killer. Luo Fusheng was deeply taken aback by this command. Hong Zhengbao departed, leaving Luo Fusheng profoundly conflicted and unsure of what to do next. Returning home, Luo Fusheng discovered that Tianying had left him a letter and departed without a word.

In her letter, Tianying expressed her deep sorrow and regret for leaving without saying goodbye. She explained her decision to break up with him, burdened by the profound suffering caused by their parents' past grievances. Having recently reunited with her father, Lin Daoshan, and witnessing his pain, she felt she could not abandon him.

She stated her desire to stay by her elderly father's side, feeling she could no longer pursue her mother Xia Anni's death, and asked Luo Fusheng to forget her, believing she was not worth his efforts and that their relationship had reached an impossible point. Heartbroken by the breakup, Luo Fusheng collapsed in the pouring rain. Fortunately, Hong Lan found him unconscious and, with the help of others, brought him back to her home.

Meanwhile, Xu Xingcheng, frustrated and angry that everyone seemed to revolve around Luo Fusheng, visited his imprisoned mother. He poured out his heart, confessing his deep affection for Tianying and his intense hatred for Luo Fusheng, lamenting how both Tianying, the woman he loved, and Hong Lan, the woman he was supposed to marry, were fixated on Luo Fusheng.

His mother listened gravely before recounting how Xu Ruian’s insatiable greed and unrequited desire for Xia Anni drove him to kill her when he couldn't possess her. She warned Xu Xingcheng not to follow his father's ruthless path of achieving goals by any means, urging him to avoid such harmful actions that would ultimately lead to unhappiness. Xu Xingcheng, however, was consumed by a desire for revenge and power.

He declared his intention to rescue his mother from prison and to take Tianying from Luo Fusheng, envisioning their family reunited. Despite his mother’s desperate pleas for him to reconsider and not become like his father, Xu Xingcheng remained defiant, convinced he would succeed where his father failed. While Hong Lan was caring for the still feverish Luo Fusheng, he muttered 'run' in his sleep.

His companion, Shuangjie, then revealed to Hong Lan that Hong Zhengbao had ordered Luo Fusheng to assassinate Tianying. Hong Lan was shocked by this revelation. Soon after, Xu Xingcheng surprised his father, Xu Ruian, by announcing his decision to marry Hong Lan, despite Xu Ruian's previous attempts to end the engagement. Xu Xingcheng pressured his father for the wedding to happen as quickly as possible, stating he didn't want to wait another day.

That evening, Xu Ruian visited Hong Zhengbao to discuss the marriage arrangements, successfully smoothing over their earlier disagreement about the engagement. Hong Zhengbao, though initially surprised by Xu Xingcheng's sudden change of heart, agreed to the alliance, but firmly stipulated that Hong Lan must be treated with respect and not suffer any grievances in the Xu family. With this, the marriage between the Xu and Hong families was officially sealed.

The following day, Xu Xingcheng directly informed Hong Lan that their wedding would proceed at the fastest possible pace, leaving her feeling angry and powerless. Luo Fusheng, having finally regained consciousness after two days of unconsciousness, immediately rushed out to find Tianying, fearing that Hong Zhengbao might act against her since he had not yet carried out the order. However, Xu Xingcheng had already set a trap.

He had his officers stage a fake assassination attempt on Tianying and then apprehended Luo Fusheng, publicly framing him for the crime of assassinating Miss Tianying in broad daylight. Tianying and Luo Cheng witnessed the entire setup but were helpless as police officers led Luo Fusheng away.

Ignoring Tianying’s desperate pleas that Luo Fusheng was innocent and meant no harm, Xu Xingcheng instructed Luo Cheng to immediately inform Hong Lan to meet him at the police station, threatening that Luo Fusheng would remain imprisoned indefinitely otherwise. Tianying later attempted to bribe the police to see Luo Fusheng but was denied access under Xu Xingcheng’s strict orders.

Upon learning of Luo Fusheng’s arrest, Hong Lan immediately went to the police station to confront Xu Xingcheng and plead for his release, asking what it would take. Xu Xingcheng, seizing the opportunity, shamelessly blackmailed her, demanding that she marry him in exchange for Luo Fusheng's freedom. He wanted to see if she would sacrifice everything for Luo Fusheng.

Desperate to save the man she cared for, Hong Lan reluctantly agreed to his terms, warning him that she would kill him if he broke his promise. Xu Xingcheng returned home, triumphant, to inform his father about the expedited wedding plans, which Xu Ruian, though somewhat perplexed by his son's sudden, aggressive maneuvers, dutifully began to arrange. Xu Xingcheng then visited Luo Fusheng in his cell, taunting him with a cruel smile.

He declared his intention to take away every woman Luo Fusheng cherished, including Hong Lan and Tianying, forcing Luo Fusheng to watch them all leave him one by one, asserting his superior power and control over everything. Luo Fusheng vehemently warned Xu Xingcheng not to harm them, but Xu Xingcheng merely laughed maniacally and walked away, leaving Luo Fusheng in despair, confined to his "dog cage." Soon after, the wedding of Hong Lan and Xu Xingcheng proceeded as scheduled.

As Hong Zhengbao looked at his daughter in her beautiful wedding gown, he was overcome with profound regret and sadness, fearing that she would suffer indignities and unhappiness in the Xu family. He confessed his regret to Hong Lan, even suggesting they call off the marriage, as he couldn't bear to see her wronged. However, Hong Lan, displaying unexpected maturity and resolve, gently comforted her father.

She assured him that she must go through with the marriage to uphold their family's honor and protect their people, as the Hong family could not afford the consequences of canceling the wedding at this stage. She promised him that she would strive for happiness and live a good life, emphasizing that life cannot be regretted but can turn in different directions, and that happiness is not something one simply waits for.

She urged her father to take good care of himself, as he was now alone. Hong Zhengbao was touched by her words, his only hope being that his daughter would be truly happy.
