Xu Ruian readily agreed to look into the matter, promising to find the killer who dared to cause trouble for the Hong family on his territory. However, Xu Ruian then subtly broached the topic of the arranged marriage between his son, Xu Xingcheng, and Hong Lan.
He expressed doubts about the couple's willingness, suggesting that young people nowadays prefer freedom in marriage, and implied a desire to reconsider the engagement, influenced by the Hong family's perceived declining influence. Hong Zhengbao, discerning Xu Ruian's intent to call off the engagement and fearing his daughter's potential abandonment by the Xu family, immediately devised a counterplan.
