Despite the Xixuan Sect Master's approval of the marriage between Ruochen and Gu Qing, Ruochen firmly rejected the union, insisting he would marry no one but Zhang Yinyin. His Master, taken aback, sent him to Taichang Palace for confinement, warning that if the Xixuan Sect were to fall, Zhang Yinyin would not be spared. Later, Zhang Yinyin challenged Gu Qing to a duel in the wilderness.

While Gu Qing believed the duel was over Ruochen, Zhang Yinyin claimed she only wanted to prove her superiority in combat despite her less noble background. Gu Qing urged Zhang Yinyin to let go, reminding her that her own immortal fate with Ruochen was predestined centuries ago. Zhang Yinyin countered that Ruochen was already hers by his own promise.

Although Gu Qing was reluctant to injure her, Zhang Yinyin refused to yield, declaring that being unable to defeat Gu Qing was more unbearable than death. After their inconclusive duel, Zhang Yinyin sought out Su He, the Nine-Tailed Heavenly Fox. Su He deduced Zhang Yinyin's motive was love. Aware that the Huanyao Root within her body was hindering her path to godhood, Zhang Yinyin asked to learn sorcery to compete with Gu Qing.

Su He warned that mastering the secret arts would inevitably transform her into a great demon, leading to persecution by all righteous sects. Undeterred, Zhang Yinyin declared she would become a demon if it meant she could defeat Gu Qing and protect the Xixuan Sect. Impressed by her resolve, Su He accepted her as a disciple, imparting a lesson: a woman who falls in love with a man has already lost everything.

Meanwhile, news arrived from Xu Zekai in Haofang about increasing demonic energy and the imminent emergence of the Bamboo Snake, a demon from the Dark Abyss. This demon carried the Shenzhou Energy Map, a treasure vital to the Xixuan Sect and the world's fate, which was certain to ignite conflict among the sects. Ruochen, hearing of this, requested to lead the mission to Haofang. His Master initially refused, citing that Ruochen's identity as a banished god made him a target.

Ruochen argued this was precisely why he must go, to prove his strength and bring glory to their sect. Supported by other masters, his Master relented, on the condition that Ruochen's marriage to Gu Qing would take place upon his triumphant return. Before departing, Ruochen tried to see Zhang Yinyin but was stopped by her mother. She told him to stay away, as his engagement to Gu Qing was already causing the strong-willed Yinyin great pain.

As Ruochen left, he privately resolved never to marry Gu Qing, while Zhang Yinyin's parents fretted over her disappearance and the potential activation of the demon poison in her system. Zhang Yinyin soon returned to her parents, who immediately detected a strong demonic aura around her. She confessed she had voluntarily sought out Su He to learn sorcery, believing it was her only way to contend with Gu Qing for Ruochen.

She pleaded to be allowed to go to Haofang to be with him. Her father forbade it, calling her a "silly girl" drawn like a moth to a flame, and tried to confine her. However, Zhang Yinyin skillfully evaded her parents and fled. In the wilderness, Ruochen encountered his Master, who explained that as the sect's destined figure, Ruochen was crucial to overcoming an impending tribulation.

The Master revealed that thousands of years ago, an overflow of Chaotic Energy allowed Nine Hells Demons to wreak havoc, and the Bamboo Snake's appearance signaled more disasters to come. He tasked Ruochen with retrieving the Shenzhou Energy Map it carried and bestowed upon him the Xuanxin ring, a powerful artifact capable of storing countless treasures. In Haofang City, the Prince organized a demon-eliminating assembly.

There, a woman named Xichen grew distressed upon hearing that a banished god from the Xixuan Sect would attend. She later tearfully told the Prince that this disciple, Ji Ruochen, was an impostor who had murdered her cousin, Luo Feng—the true banished god—and stolen his spirit stone.

Though hesitant to act against the Xixuan Sect, the Prince was swayed by the Imperial Advisor’s plan to use "Great Ancestor," a wicked figure the Xixuan Sect had helped imprison sixteen years prior, to assassinate Ruochen. Seeking rest at an inn, Ruochen quickly discerned it was a trap set by the Black Jade Gang. After feigning incapacitation from a sleeping potion, he easily subdued his attackers.

They confessed that Great Ancestor had ordered sixteen evil sects to ambush and kill him, even planning a "beauty trap." Realizing the main roads were filled with enemies, Ruochen decided to travel through the mountains. Meanwhile, at Yun Zhong Ju, Gu Qing's master suspected the Xixuan Sect's true motive was to seize the Shenzhou Energy Map. Overhearing this, Gu Qing insisted on going to Haofang to help Ruochen. After she knelt and refused to rise, her frustrated master consented.

As she journeyed, Yinfeng, who had been following her, created a magical barrier to shield her from the rain. Gu Qing warned him to stop, but he silently vowed to always protect her. Shortly after, unidentified pursuers in the same forest detected a powerful demonic aura and gave chase.
