After the sacrificial ceremony, Wei Shao expressed his gratitude at the banquet to Madam Xu, his mother, and his uncles, but most of all to Xiao Qiao. He hoped to walk hand in hand with Xiao Qiao in the future. Madam Xu offered high praise, finally feeling a great burden lifted from her heart. Madam Wei summoned Wei Shao and suggested that he and Xiao Qiao should have a child to prevent any changes in the situation.

She had specially prepared clothes previously worn by pregnant women for Xiao Qiao to wear, believing it would help her conceive quickly. Wei Shao did not object, though he felt it was a bit inappropriate that the clothes came from the wife of a butcher. Wei Liang also brought up marrying Xiao Tao. He said he would wait until he had saved enough military pay and then ask Wei Shao to approve the marriage.

However, Xiao Tao was anxious to marry Wei Liang and feared the wait would be too long. Wei Liang didn’t understand and insisted on saving enough money so he could afford the wedding, which frustrated Xiao Tao and made her leave in anger. Hearing their conversation, Wei Qu pointed out Xiao Tao’s feelings to Wei Liang, who then happily went to borrow money from Wei Qu so he could marry Xiao Tao.

Wei Shao kept thinking about his mother’s suggestion and also wanted Xiao Qiao to conceive soon. But feeling the clothes were unsuitable, he instead proposed to Gongsun Yang to strengthen the defenses of Bo Ya and the borders of Wei.

Just then, Wei Liang came to ask Wei Shao to preside over his and Xiao Tao’s matter, but before he could speak, Wei Shao assigned him to deliver military supplies and to also fetch some clothes that had been worn by Da Qiao. If there were any items used by children, he was to bring a couple of those as well.

At this time, Xiao Qiao’s tastes had changed, and her cycle had not arrived, so she suspected she might be pregnant, though she didn’t tell Wei Shao before confirming it. Wei Liang came to Da Qiao asking for a gift, and Da Qiao rummaged through boxes trying to find something Xiao Qiao liked.

Bi Zhi felt Da Qiao didn’t need to go to such lengths, but Da Qiao recalled how, when she and Bi Zhi ran away from home, Xiao Qiao had picked out many of her favorite things for her. Now she wanted to do the same for Xiao Qiao. Bi Zhi was touched by the sisters’ bond and sincerely praised his wife. Liu Shan and Liu Yan returned together.

Liu Shan worried that they had come back after a defeat and feared Su Ehuang might also betray them. At this time, Xue Tai also doubted Liu Yan’s reliability and suggested Su Ehuang return to Xue County with them. But Su Ehuang refused to leave and declared she would help Chen Xiang conquer the land, and that only Liu Yan currently dared to confront Wei Shao.

Su Ehuang deliberately wore bridal attire and approached Liu Yan, bringing up their engagement and expressing her determination to help Liu Yan soar and transform like a dragon. Su Ehuang analyzed the current situation between the Qiao and Wei families. She believed the Wei family valued affection and loyalty and would always stand by their kin, while the Qiao family was used to going with the wind.

She offered to persuade others to form alliances with Liu Yan to attack Wei Shao. Liu Shan warned Liu Yan not to act rashly, since they had just lost a battle and couldn’t afford more setbacks. But Liu Yan, eager for victory, scolded Liu Shan and threatened to kill him if he spoke again. Liu Shan had no choice but to remain silent.

Liu Yan then carried Su Ehuang away, but Su Ehuang’s eyes lingered on the main seat behind them. Wei Liang, just back, went to Xiao Tao and told her he had asked Wei Shao for a reward and promised to marry her soon. Xiao Tao said she wasn’t concerned about a courtyard—anything simple would do. But Wei Liang suddenly remembered he had to prepare a courtyard and ran off again to save money.

Xiao Tao complained that Wei Liang was too foolish, but Chun Niang liked this son-in-law, saying it showed he cared deeply about Xiao Tao. Wei Shao tucked Da Qiao’s items under the mattress and suddenly noticed Xiao Qiao was sleepy. Recalling that her cycle had been absent for a while, he grew worried and wanted to summon the imperial physician. But Xiao Qiao told Wei Shao she was pregnant.

Wei Shao was overjoyed and thought the things he had placed under the bed had worked their magic. Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao went together to the stargazing terrace. He embraced Xiao Qiao and named the child Fei Fei. The two imagined a peaceful world where their child could grow up. Wei Shao promised it would happen—once a son of the Wei family sets his heart on something, he never regrets it.

He also vowed he would never let Xiao Qiao down in this life. Someone secretly arranged for children to sing songs praising the governor and mocking Qiao Yue. Zhang Pu incited further discord, saying everyone was now talking about Qiao Ping while ignoring Qiao Yue. He worried that once Qiao Ci had a child, Qiao Yue’s status would be even more threatened. Su Ehuang sent Liu Yan off to Kang County.

Liu Yan held Su Ehuang’s hand, reluctant to part, kissed her forehead, and promised never to let her down. Xiao Qiao had a nightmare in which her father encountered several wolves in the wild but remained unaware. She called out several times to warn him, but he never noticed. Wei Shao proposed bringing Qiao Ping to live with them for a while so Xiao Qiao could feel more at ease, which touched her deeply.

Wei Liang had always insisted on saving enough money before marrying Xiao Tao. Seeing that Wei Liang remained unmoved, Xiao Tao told him directly that her favorite thing was orchids—just bring her a pot of blooming orchids to propose with. She thought the matter would soon be settled, but Wei Liang insisted on cultivating the orchids in the courtyard until they bloomed.

Wei Qu, worried about Wei Liang’s stubbornness, suggested he pick up Qiao Ping and bring back a pot of blooming orchids from Yanzhou so they could proceed with the wedding right away. Wei Liang was very pleased with this idea. The four brothers lay on the ground looking up at the moon, each wearing the happiest smile. Xiao Tao went specially to the city gate to see Wei Liang off and asked about his true intentions in going to Yanzhou.

Wei Liang shyly admitted that besides picking up Qiao Ping, he would also bring back orchids to propose to Xiao Tao. She was overjoyed, and they waved goodbye to each other. Zhang Pu brought Qiao Yue to see Liu Yan, intending to help Qiao Yue make a comeback against the odds.
