Synopsis
Ni Xiangdong is asked by his friend Cao Xiaojun to deliver a wooden box to an abandoned cabin in the remote mountains. To his horror, he discovers that the box contains Cao Xiaojun's corpse. Cao's wife, Wu Ximei, reports her husband missing and subtly implies that Ni Xiangdong is involved. However, as a witness, Wu Ximei gives inconsistent statements, and it is revealed that the child she and Cao raised is not biologically his.
Under intense police questioning, Wu Ximei is forced to recount their shared past: the three were once close friends; Wu and Ni were lovers, but when she became pregnant, Ni refused to take responsibility. Cao Xiaojun stepped in, taking her away to raise the child as his own. As the investigation deepens, the police make another startling discovery — the child is not biologically related to Ni Xiangdong either.
Meanwhile, opinions about Ni Xiangdong are sharply divided: people from his hometown describe him as ruthless and wicked, while his coworkers portray him as kind-hearted, even mentioning that he financially supported an elderly man surnamed Xu.
Veteran detective Meng Chao and his rookie partner Tong Hao follow the trail from northern coastlines to southern forests, gradually untangling a decade-long web of murder and deception woven between Wu Ximei, Cao Xiaojun, and Ni Xiangdong — ultimately ensuring that the guilty face the judgment of the law.
