Shu Jingran asked Jiang Xu how he planned to deal with the matter. Just then, Ming Tan arrived, speaking with barbed words that left Jiang Xu completely confused. In a fit of anger, Ming Tan said she would help Jiang Xu take a concubine; he would have to take one sooner or later, so instead of troubling the Empress Dowager, he might as well find someone he liked himself.

Only then did Jiang Xu realize Ming Tan was in a strange mood. Seeing this, Shu Jingran found an excuse to leave, but Ming Tan stormed off angrily on her own. Shu Jingran was confused as well but still advised Jiang Xu to learn to be more tolerant—when it comes to relationships, men are always at fault.

After leaving the study, Shu Jingran happened to see Yun Yi on the rooftop gnawing on a chicken leg and found the scene quite amusing. Since when did the Prince's manor have such a girl? Uncle Fu was preparing to bring food to Jiang Xu, but Ming Tan had replaced his dishes with cabbage. Uncle Fu wanted to advocate for some meat for Jiang Xu, but he had to swallow his frustration for now.

When Jiang Xu saw that his meal contained only one plate of vegetables, he thought the household must be going through hard times. Though Ming Tan had a sharp tongue, she had a soft heart. She still had someone deliver some incense to Jiang Xu, after all, he had gotten injured because of her. Lü'e suggested that Ming Tan take a walk to clear her mind.

Unexpectedly, Yun Yi came along, saying it was Jiang Xu’s order—whenever Ming Tan left the residence, she was to stay by her side at all times. Ming Tan felt uncomfortable and asked Suxin to come up with an excuse to send Yun Yi back; she wanted to walk alone. Yun Yi didn’t understand why Ming Tan didn’t want to see her, while Ming Tan wandered alone, lost in thought, filled with memories of her days and nights with Jiang Xu.

Jiang Xu couldn’t eat anymore, so he asked someone to buy him a roast chicken. Just then, news came that Liu Mo had gone to Nanyu River Street—coincidentally, Ming Tan was there that day too. When Liu Mo saw Ming Tan, he greeted her and mentioned that she no longer recognized him, bringing up the time they met at a zither shop.

Back then, Liu Mo was just a poor scholar, and Ming Tan, seeing his deep passion for music, gave him her zither. Although Liu Mo repeatedly declined, Ming Tan still gave him her old zither. From that moment on, Liu Mo never forgot her. Ming Tan explained that giving the zither had been a moment of generosity, and now that she was married, she urged Liu Mo to abandon such foolish thoughts and take care of himself.

Eager to leave, she suddenly smelled a familiar scent—the same one from the day she was kidnapped. Jiang Xu arrived in haste, warned Liu Mo, and took Ming Tan back to the residence without another word. To spite Jiang Xu, Ming Tan deliberately said that she and Liu Mo were old acquaintances. Only then did Jiang Xu realize that Ming Tan was jealous because of Yun Yi.

He quickly explained that Yun Yi was a secret guard pretending to be a concubine to protect her. Ming Tan broke into a joyful smile, all her resentment vanishing at once, and she playfully demanded Jiang Xu make it up to her. Jiang Xu kissed her on the forehead, then moved down to her nose, lips, and finally to the bed. But because of his injuries, they did not take things further.

The next morning, Ming Tan specially asked the kitchen to prepare pastries for Jiang Xu. Jiang Xu wanted Ming Tan to become stronger and told her to start getting up early to exercise, but Ming Tan had always been weak and pleaded with him to spare her. She made plans with Bai Minmin to go out and distribute supplies to refugees. Jiang Xu reminded her to bring Yun Yi along.

In the carriage, Ming Tan told Bai Minmin about Yun Yi’s identity and asked about the day Bai Minmin met her suitor. Shu Jingran also came to help distribute supplies and happened to meet Yun Yi, whom he had seen at the Prince's manor the day before. But Yun Yi completely ignored him.

She had grown up alone and destitute and only survived thanks to Jiang Xu’s help, so she was absolutely loyal to him and followed his arrangements to stay by Ming Tan’s side. Suddenly, a large wave of refugees surged at the gates of the capital, accusing Ming Tingyuan of failing in disaster relief. While distributing supplies, Ming Tan was also questioned by the refugees, nearly sparking a riot.
